SEGA takes full blame for PS3 port of Bayonetta
There was a bit of controversy earlier last month over the differences between the PS3 and Xbox 360 version of Bayonetta. The PS3 version of the game received some criticism from those who have played both versions at the Tokyo Game Show. However, as it turns out, the studio behind the development of the game is shifting all blame to SEGA.
Bayonetta is quickly building a reputation not for its fun factor but for its controversial PS3 port. I suppose the port in itself is not all that controversial as any gamer with a PS3 can now download the demo off the Japanese store and compare it to the Xbox 360 demo and find that there is very little that is different. There are some graphical differences such as environmental textures being smooth with fewer bumps compared to the Xbox 360 version. Also, the PS3 version of the game does suffer slightly from framerate stutters, but its barely noticeable.
Platinum Games, the studio behind the development of Bayonetta for the Xbox 360 is now completely distancing itself from the PS3 port of the game by stating that SEGA was responsible for completely “converting†the game over to the PS3. The studio and SEGA has gone as far as to put disclaimers in magazines and in the game demo credit indicating that the former was responsible for the port.
The studio seems to dislike even the slightest implication that Platinum Games may be responsible for the PS3 port as it questions the studio’s development skills. The industry has truly changed a great deal over the past two years. I recall several studios blaming the PS3’s difficult architecture for shoddy ports to the system back then.
However, these complaints have now died down because if a developer were to complain this day in age it would be like admitting to your peers that you were some how incompetent as a video game programmer. Hence the next best thing to do is to shift blame to another party. Despite Platinum Game’s shift in blame, the fact that the studio “oversaw†the PS3 development process for Bayonetta, which was handled by internal SEGA developers, still implicate the studio. Looking at games like Valkyrie Chronicles I do believe that the SEGA development team is fully capable, so this just may be a situation of project mismanagement.

The differences are so small it hardly seems worth mentioning.
360 appears to have a higher contrast making it look slightly brighter. This is the same on a lot of multi-console releases and has been credited as the two different rendering engines.
Seriously All the BS about this game almost made me not want it and it’s been one of the games I’m looking out for. Platinum games should have shut the fuck up until the game came out if there were still issues.

My question is: If they know there is an issue, and they have time to fix it, will they?
Reminds me of Ghost Busters. It’s a Sony Pictures IP, and Sony even published the game in Europe. The game was finished and delayed numerous times, but they still didn’t take the time to fix it. They waited to release a patch months after the games release. If they fixed the issue via a patch, then they could have easily fixed the game before its release.
The differences are minor, but if they don’t fix the issue, it’s just sloppy development.

I doubt such a fuss would have been made if the PS3 version was supperior to that of the 360.

Talk about a swing there, right…2 years ago, it was Sony who were getting the blame for the PS3 receiving dodgy ports…now it’s the developers themeselves.
I think now we’re seeing what the PS3 can do (admittedly thanks to Sony’s studios), it nullifies the claim that the PS3 isn’t made for gaming or can’t handle serious code, and you can begin to make legitimate claims about lazy development or sloppy development.
I’m of the opinion that Sony should open some external outsourcing studios to help code party games for the PS3. Bayonetta with some Sony Santa Monica coding could be amazing

I read somewhere (I think it was Kotaku) a memo from a software developer saying that even though it is pretty much a breeze to develop for the 360, it takes a lot of work porting it over to the PS3 due to the unusual architecture such as the RAM configuration etc. It also said that even though it does take a bit longer to develop a game based on the PS3 architecture, porting it to the 360 is much easier due to the friendlier architecture. So they concluded that if they want games to look identical or close enough to it, develop on the PS3 and port to the 360.

Yes the PS3 may be harder to develop for, but it has been out quite a while now, long enough for developers to try and get their heads around it.
I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again, the days of blaming the architecture of the console are coming to end. Lazy programmers really can no longer hide.

I don’t think it’s about developers being lazy. I mean seriously, would a company release a sub-standard product if they knew they didn’t try their best on it to make it look as closely as the other version? It just doesn’t make any sense.
Sure the PS3 has been around for years now, but it still has the same architecture, and developers still need to get around who whole RAM allocation issue etc. Some may have better methods than others, but there is obviously a problem here if not everyone has been able to port a game from the 360 to the PS3 and make it look close to identical.
At the end of the day I think it’s best for all gamers to have games developed on PS3 and then ported to 360, as the 360 can handle PS3 ports with a lot less stress than the other way around.

It may also be that first party game studios probably don’t mind taking a financial hit by spending a lot more on development than the game will make back in sales.
Just a theory but it explains why only first party developers have “come to grips with the power of the CELLâ€. If you have to sacrifice profitability to make good looking games on PS3 why bother?

Well as far as i can see, 360 still has more exclusives on the market than ps3, so i dont know, where u got ur info from.. I know sony has announced plenty of games (E3 2009), but at the end of the day, they are just announcements, just like GOW3 and GT5 have been for the last 3-4 years, so i hope u shud atleast wait till they all get released..

Roca when you start to knock a company like valve you start to lose credibility. Looking at what they’ve done for gaming in the last decade that’s a pretty ignorant statement.
That’s like me saying naughty dog is lazy if say the next xbox was difficult to program and they had a deal with sony. I wouldn’t stoop that low anyway because I respect the work they’ve done.

i have never been a fan of splinter cell series, but i can see conviction cud be different, but i m not going to call it or for that matter alan wake as AAA games..
i will ask my friends abt it.. coz lately i have lost faith in reviewers, i loved blue dragon and lost odyssey and everyone can see, how much they scored, coz the person reviewing the games did not preferred turn based combat..
I am happy abt uncharted actually, it was given good reviews but still it was a flop on launch, but see where “word of mouth” got it to within a span of two years

I would like to inform you that R.E 5 DC is bringing a whole new way to play the game (with Sony’s Motion controller) and more they added more stuff. I know it is still the same game but The Wii is still releasing almost all the resident Evils with Motion and they have been sucessfull. WKC comes from Level-5 thats all you need to know (RPG fans will know they are)

The way Halo ODST sales have dropped off in the UK, there’s no doubt Halo’s significance is diminishing…and “Reach” will only exacerbate that.
People aren’t fools; Halo Wars, Halo ODST, Halo Reach…you can’t keep that up without people losing interest.
You only have to see the amount of people complaining about the length of the campaign in ODST to realise that they’ve been duped. They’re unlikely to make the same mistake with Reach.
The Halo franchise peaked at Halo 3…it’s all downhill from here.

I hired ODST over the weekend and left my views on Blorge.net, seeing that it wasn’t covered very well here (Mike left a review, but other than that it didn’t receive the same type of coverage as games such as Uncharted 2, Fat Princess etc).
Roca/Lock Down, I am assuming you haven’t played it because the campaign is definitely not 4 hours. It took me a good 7 and a half hours to finish, about the same time that took me to finish Arkham Asylum. And with that being said, I found this storyline to be the best one in the Halo series.

Nah, i’ll pass meeting Gabe. But i’ll give him a Polish Bike Ride if he manages to convince the ratings board to pass the unedited version of L4D2. They’ve got a gimped version ready for release here if the unedited version doesn’t make it, but I doubt I’d be getting that version, i’d be importing from England.

I think the bigger issue here is why should a developer spend so much time working on one console that has unstable architecture that has to be worked around compared to it’s rival which was a more compatible architecture.
The other big issue is that if the exclusive big hitters such as killzone, mgs, lbp have all been flops in the sales department compared to the xbox exclusives.
I can see why some developers will say “is it even worth it?”

Good point CON. It’s so true because I remember Microsoft saying that before the begining of this generation they had a confrence and asked developers what they wanted so from the get go Microsoft was already making the system compatible for developers to bring their games on the system. A much different approach then Sony who basically went their own direction and expect developers to learn from scratch on a system that required months of coding and programing then they want to talk about lazy developers. Please, if Sony if listened to developers it wouln’t have games doing years to develope a game that can run properly and use the architech properly. It basically made it the most expensive system to develope for and the games don’t sell so really why should they bother.

who are these people complaining abt odst’s campaign as far as i can remember, all the reviews pointed out that its campaign is 5-8 hour long depending on ur playing style.. i have completed the campaign in 5 hours (4 player co-op), and wud like to mention, its gameplay is quite different from halo 3 on heroic and legendary modes.. And u gotta play the last chapter with friends on co-op with iron skulls on..(still trying to get the achievement.. so hard)

I hope u r not joking rite..
if a game is hard, it WILL take time to complete it, in comparison to easy mode.. and i never mentioned the difficulty level, all i said i beat it in 5 hours with 4 player co-op.. And the gameplay changes when u play in heroic or legendary, coz then u need med packs, have to be careful etc..
BTW i hope u know the difference between gameplay elements and time taken to complete a campaign..

its been proven that sales number doest not equal quality of the game. Madden, Wii Fit, Wii play, etc…all sold in the High millions. while most of the great games did not sell well at all (Okami, Ico, Sky of Arcadia, Eternal Darkness, Vagrant Story, and even the Conduit for the Wii)

I’ve only talked to people that were very big fans of the Halo franchise and they were disappointed.
as for the Valve (Gabe) comment. Thats pretty much the quote that pisses off the Sony masses.
Why is a surprise that the PS3 doesn’t use Microsoft’s proprietary DirectX to develop their games? Thats why PC only developers are angry.
Valve is getting with the program anyway. They wanted programmers with knowledge of the ps3 architecture in a job posting 6 months ago.

@ Harry: I played Halo 3 and I was dissapointed after all they 3 years hype about the game. Halo Wars……meh didnt even bother……ODST I havent played, one because I dont have a 360 anymore, two because its just Halo 3 with a forgettable story mode.

you never acutally beat the game..you cant judge a game from a demo or from the first couple of levels. KZ2 is a good game, not the best FPS but it is a solid game.

I’m going through ODST right now and I find it to be an awesome game. I actaully beleive that this is the smartest AI I have ever played against and I’m playing on Noraml. The health pack situation is something you really have to keep an eye out for. I usually setup a waypoint so I can remember where they are and they are so hard to come by. But really that comment about gamepaly time and difficulty was a LOL moment for me. I guess some people don’t like to challenge themselves and have no idea how a increased difficulty can increase gameplay time. But really the campaign is only one aspect because once that is finished the multiplayer is what keeps this game going because it is just that good.

4 Player Co op has gotta be insane. Setting up a time to play RE5 with a buddy was difficult enough with two peoples schedules. Imagine that with 4 people.

As for Bayonetta…. I’m going to download the Demo from the Japanese store, and if I like it, thats good enough for me. The game looks friggin awesome. I love button mashers.

Well hopefully in Bayonetta, when you get halfway through the game they don’t make you go back through it in reverse with a different character.

roca – gt5p has launched and there seems to be very little interest in GT5. In fact, the early previews of GT5 conclude it’s basically GT5p with more cars and “some” damage… bleh..
if halo is “average” explain why it has the record for online gameplay in hours…. meanwhile it STILL is in the top 5 for most played game online….

I’m not sure why I need to wait on my predictions; Halo Wars went nowhere, and ODST has tailed off pretty quickly, with both being full price releases, and both touted as full games. Prologue was neither.
Although I guess you’re right about the UK market. UK players clearly saw through ODST pretty quickly; if only Americans were as intelli..no, bad lock_down

Zelda: Ocarina of Time is one of the Highest reviewed game of all time and it only managed to sell 7.60M. Halo 3, GTA:SA, GTA4, Wii Fit, and all Wii crap has sold more.
FF7 sold sold 330,000 copies (US) in its first week, and then sales reached sales of 500,000 units in 3 weeks

Look at Demon’s Souls…it now jump to become my favorite game on the PS3 (before Demon’s Soul my top 3 were MGS4, Uncharted and Valkiria Chronicles)
Valkirya Chronicles did sell well, and Demon’s Souls will probably suffer the same.

OK lets just clear this up about me saying ODST is not worth it. ODST is worth it. You get 6-8 Hour campaign, Firefight mode which is loads of fun, The complete online Halo 3 Multiplayer, Beta access to Halo Reach Multiplayer, 4 player Co-Op, what more could you ask for. You also get a side of Halo that is brand new and fresh taken from an ODST’s point of view/abilities. The only thing that makes this game not worth it’s full value, let me repeat that, IT’S FULL RETAIL VALUE, is if you bought all the Maps for Halo 3 Multiplayer because you get all the maps in ODST. Other from that this game is awesome and those who hate are only jealous.

Actually he’s a 360 only user now. He told me he’s waiting to find out if there’s any hardware issues with the new slim before buying it. Sounds like he got burnt before (ps2 or 360).

I have played and enjoyed a handful of 360 game, I was a 360 owner and im planning on getting a 360 back soon. the only thing holding me back is that there is nothing that I want right now for it (sorry but im not FPS fan). I thought Magna Carta will do it but…meh

well I had a 360 until March 2009 (out of warranty)
and Even though I might sound biased (thats because some ppl here talk crap without even owning a PS3)I never said Anything bad about Gears of War, Lost Odyssey, N3 and more.. but I didnt really Like L4D (only a multiplaye game), Halo 3 and Mass Effect (not my type of RPG).
so I got to play a handfull of good 360 game.. but since march 2009 there have not been anything that I want for 360. Halo Wars..meh, ODST meh, Forza 2 was fun but F3 is not enough to make buy a 360. But im really looking foward to Alan Wake and N3-2 (even though I think its only coming out in Japan)
I have also said many times the Live is better and has more features. but it doesnt justfied the premeun for it because even though the PSN is a lil behind I can still do *almost* (cross game chat and party system doesnt justied the price either) anything Live does for Free.

I can easily say that most of us here can acknowledge points from each point of view, i.e. I think uncharted 2 looks awesome and I’ve said it before but I know for a fact that if ms owned the IP you and a few others would be saying it’s the worst thing since anal cancer! Which is really depressing for all of us because it stinks of fanboyism and brings the whole site down.

I bought it on launch day (2005) with a 2 year warranty at best buy, I exchanged once because it wasnt reading discs properly (through Best Buy). so it last me from 2005-2009 = out of warranty. so I called 1-800-4-my-xbox many times to see if I can get it repaired for free, they kept telling the system is out of warranty and there is nothing they can do. so after arguing with them for couple of weeks they got me so mad that I told them to close my account and refund me my money, then they were saying I couldnt closed it before my subscription runs out…but then I got them to cancel it and refund my money

Im pretty sure there are many ppl who feel they are getting raped by M$ by having to pay to play online with your friends, and then there are a huge amount of 360 owner who feel they got raped by M$ because they bought a 360 without HDMI port. and many got raped because their system died either before the 3-year warranty was implemented or after they 3-year warranty period because of a known system failure cause by poor console builts and misplaced CPU

I did tell u that my xbox elite was actually more expensive than ps3, coz i had to import it, so price was never an issue.. its just that i feel that playstation is a big brand in gaming, and they used it to win a format war..
And u have to reliaze that Xbox didn’t won the last generation, even though it was better than ps2 in many ways.. People who like gow3 or gt5 or FF13 (atleast at that time) had to buy a ps3, u wont find them on xbox, so in a way, sony took a calculated risk and it payed off well.. but in the end, it irks me when ppl make sony the god of gsming, i know bluray has been good for gaming, i wont deny thgat, but u do realize that it was implemented in ps3 for a reason, that was not for gaming.. Bluray as a standard will make sony much money..

Sony definitely used the ps3 to win a format war. This bothered me little as I was already looking into blu ray and was interested way before the specs of the ps3 was announced.
If you use that to display dislike (hate) towards Sony, you’re forgetting a clear fuckup on Microsofts part.
They rushed the MS out with a known defect hoping it would work itself out so they could be the first to market. It worked (they lead the ps3 in sales)while at the same time backfiring on them. They will take a hit next gen when “peace of mind” comes to play when these burnt people are considering which system to purchase.

I dont thin k that way, its not like MS copied LIVE from psn, its the other way round..
How IS it supposed to be free, when its the “first” on the market to implement online gaming, arcade releases movies etc “on CONSOLES”..
Sony made psn for ps3 and made it free and suddenly “LIVE” was supposed to be “free”, even when “LIVE” was there for Xbox 1 as well and even then u had to pay to play..
So roca, that way if sony starts charging for online play in this Gen or the next Gen, u are not going to buy the next playstation.. Am i right ??

Sony introduced CD playback on a console (PS1), they introduce DVD for the first time on a console (PS2) and they did introduced BD also. why stop now? thats like going backwards
its like M$’s regular xbox had a 20GB HDD and then they decided to released 360 witn no HDD at all and sell propertary memory at a high cost. something doesnt make sense right? do you rather want Sony to release the PS3 without BD and then Release a add-on pheripheral like M$, or buy a separate BD player (which was reatiling for $1000 at that time)

I dont know what to tell u, are u on crack or something, u mean to say a company already losing a gen (xbox – ps2), will decide to launch a product, which they know is “DEFECTED THINKING IT WILL WORK ITSELF OUT”
I can honestly say u have no idea what u are talking abt..
U say they did it on purpose to get some market share, irespective of the fact, that they lost the earlier generation even when they had the better hardware on market, pissed off millions of customers by stopping support on the earlier xbox,
irrespective of the fact that they will not only lose this generation but also their reliability/goodwill/reputation will be tarnished for the next generation as well..
and dont forget howmany lawsuits and in how many countries..
if there is a problem its been with the testing department, coz usually defects are detected within a week, if there is a technical fault, nobody wud have guessed that a simple heating issue will causes the Solder Joints to warp and disfigure, u can make xbox to rrod in days if dont play it in ideal conditions for countless hours, otherwise if u follow a normal routine of playing 2-5 hours a day in ideal conditions, it will take months for ur xbox to rrod or maybe it wont..
No one wants to lose alright, but the way u r putting it out for microsoft, it sure shot to lose, not only for this generation but also for others to come..

first of all, everybody knows the 360 was rushed to hell. there are even many articles about it. don’t try to defend M$ because it will come to bite you. every electronic device has to go through many trails and error processed M$ surely skipped some. its not just the RRoD, the 360 has many issues like not reading disc ( the CPU heat burn the lense), E74 error, if you put you 360 “sideways” is goign to scratch all you games and then it will die (one of the trails and errors they skipped).
M$ is not going to lose this gen…but they also wont win it. which puts them in the same situation they were last gen.
do you think 2-5 hours a day is resonable for a electronic deviced..when there wasnt any memory cards I used to leave my NES on for weeks and it never died on me…actually I sitll have it

All i did was let u know, why i didnt buy a ps3, coz u asked me.. but u ppl start countering, even if am answering ur own question.. Its not like ps3 is not without its fault ylod/bluray laser problems etc and its not like i am not willing to accept that YES xbox 360 has many flaws/problem..
But its entirely different to state that a company’s decision to have a bluray drive in playstation ps3 to win a format war,

Since we are speaking about hating companies, I brought up the MS issue. Releasing a product with known defects is a good reason to hate a company. Sorry that logic didn’t work out for you.

well, first of all i never played any ps2/xbox.. hell i didnt even owned any previous gen systems, so i hope u realize i am not loyal to any corporation/company.. hell i do own a sony br drive laptop so its not like i hate sony.. its just when i wanted to buy a console, i just made a decision, if somebody asks me why u did it, i give him the same explanation as i did to u ROCA.. see its cad who stated he hates sony, no i didnt.. i just said why i didnt buy a ps3.. price is not an issue as i already bought a 360 nearly twice as much expensive as a ps3, so there.. i have no fanboyism, i always am willingly to accept its(360) faults.. but its just

After the ps3 came out MS/HDDVD group gave 150 million to Paramount (incentives) for 18 months of exclusivity. Before that Paramount released on both formats
At that time….
Universal was exclusive to HDDVD
Weinstein was exclusive to HDDVD
Warner made movies on both.
Fox was blu ray exclusive
Sony/MGM/Tristar were exclusive to blu ray
Disney/Buena Vista Video was exclusive to blu ray
Lions Gate also.

I know PS3 helped BD, but BD was out first and the PS3 was planned to come packege with a BD drive years before it was released.
now to support M$ on the XBL fees is just the same or worst as fanboys supporty BD.

20GB PS3 for $500 ($100 more than a 360 at that time) with Bluray, Blue Tooth, free online play, controller with rechargable battery, HDMI, and easy tp upgrade HDD.
and 60 GB PS3 (3 times as more GB as the xbox – at that time) for $600 ($200 more than the 360) with everything the 20GB had plus Wi-Fi and muli-memory card reader?
which one makes more sense to you?

Roca It’s not about the High Price tag, it’s about ethics and the way they treated their customer. They used the Playstation as a Trojan Horse for Bluray and truth be told they paid for Bluray to win because anyone at that time with sense will know that HD DVD was the better product. It was supposed to be decided by the consumer but then Sony got desperate to win and paid their way. That same ignorant attitude exsist today and even back when the PS2 was king because we all know how Sony screwed millions on broken down PS2′s.
As for the PS2 I never hated it but by the time I got back into Video Games the Xbox was the better product. All the PS2 had was a better Library and we all know how much shovelware existed on the PS2.

Roca u first have to tell me, when xbox 1 had a better processor, better gpu than a ps2, and had a standard harddisk, while ps2 used its proprietory memory cards.. while xbox live 50$ a year vs ps2 didnot even had a stable consistent network..
So how come xbox lost.. if u ll understand this thing, then i am sure u ll get the answer to ur question.. and thats why 360 will win this gen..
Its been the ps2 of this generation, with overpriced accesories and faulty hardware (not like rrod though)

We can probably eliminate blu tooth from the bullet point list. most 360′s came with a headset.
Somethings going to change. Either Sony will eventually start charging also, or MS will stop. I hope it’s the latter.

the Xbox 1 had no support from 3rd party company and specially from Japanese Publisher/Developer with left the Xbox without any final fantasy, Resident Evil, DMC, Metal Gear, Fatal Frame, Dragon Quest, Harvest Moon, Okami, Xenosaga, shin Megami Tensei, Street Fighter, Monster Huner, Star Ocean, and more.
and it was more expensive.

Less Studio support (lack of Fox,Disney, Sony/MGM)
Less Bitrate
Higher quality sound in Movies

I all seriousness. Aside from cost, as HDDVD players were a lot cheaper, and the interactive portions of the discs which Sony finalized with BD+, there were little difference.

I don’t really know what you want me to show you. The guy that wrote two flattering Xbox books says he has insider info backing his claim. MS not suing his ass off should be proof enough. According to him they new of the fault. You Xbots are quick enough to elevate the BBC article as truth, but when I come here with a book stating what I’ve been saying it’s considered BS.

OK HD DVD from day one (2005) all players had an ethernet port allowing firmware upgrades to all players. There were features on HD DVD That Bluray did not have mainly because it was not until 2008 after HD DVD lost that BD Live came into exsistance and ethernet ports became stantard on Bluray Players.
I did a search on Blorge of what I said because it’s a bit foggy now but I’ll paste a few comments I made
