Aaron Greenberg does it again: Xbox 360 to outsell PS3 for “this entire generation”
Aaron Greenberg is at at it again, riling everyone who isn’t an Xbox 360 fanboy who believes the system will kill all-comers. This time it’s merely him expressing a simple belief that the Xbox 360 will outsell the PS3 both this calendar year and for the console generation as a whole. But as usual it’s the way he puts his message across. The man is a walking mouthpiece.
If there’s one man guaranteed not to pull any punches in the games industry, it’s Xbox 360 director of product management at Microsoft, Aaron Greenberg. This is a man whose job it is to keep the Xbox 360 on track and promote it wherever possible. And he does this by being completely outspoken on all manner of topics, with little regard for whether it upsets rival companies, fanboys, or developers and publishers.
His latest statement is actually a very clear message, and one which you’d fully expect to hear from a man in his position. But his lack of tact and complete devotion to the cause in the face of plain facts is still very annoying.
In an interview with Game Informer, Greenberg gave his opinion on how this holiday season is shaping up, with all three consoles being available for a similar price point.
It is not a real concern to us. We fully expect PlayStation 3 will come in as the console with the most units sold for the month. This is frankly not a real surprise to us or the analysts that follow this industry. What I can tell you is we remain confident that Xbox 360 will not only outsell PS3 for the full calendar year, but for this entire generation. It is similar to a game of baseball, it is not about just winning one inning, but instead being able to win the game by consistently delivering across all nine innings.
Unfortunately, the NPD sales figures for hardware and software in the States for September have been delayed until at least Monday for undisclosed reasons. So well have to wait a little longer to find out what the margin of victory for the PS3 is. Michael Pachter is projecting the PS3 to beat the Wii by around 20,000 units and the Xbox 360 by around 60,000. All as a result of the release of the cheaper PS3 Slim.
But the longer term picture isn’t as clear cut as Greenberg would like to believe. Sure, in the U.S. it’s very unlikely the PS3 will catch up with the Xbox 360. But it isn’t impossible. A 2:1 lead isn’t insurmountable at this stage, but it does depend whether the PS3 exclusive games due out over the next year or so turn out to be true system sellers or not. And for the world as a whole, the PS3 still stands a good chance of finishing second in the hardware stakes.
Not that Greenberg would ever admit that. It’s his job not to, and even if it wasn’t, he’d be too boneheaded to do so anyway.

I agree with SW the positions are pretty much locked for this generation so I’ll call it a wrap at this point. Besides when Natal drops it’s going to be nuts. Natal is pretty much going to distance what was pretty much the same experience on both the 360 and the PS3 when it comes out and I’m sure some Wii owners will jump on board but the PS3 wand is basically a Wiimote.

And now that it has Twitter, Facebook, Netflix, MSN Messenger, Last.FM, Sky TV, 1080P Movie Streaming so Arcade owners can watch a movie without a HD, Games on Demand, plus a hugh Library of retail and Arcade games and Natal it pretty much has the best offering of any console this generation.

I really don’t think so. He’s forgetting that the 360 is pretty much screwed at the moment. PS3 is smaller and cheaper (after all those silly upgrades) and the difference in 360-PS3 exclusive titles is getting pretty huge. The only thing that the 360 has this year is Forza 3 (which looks fantastic), and lets face it, PS3 has come a long way. 360 hasn’t got anything on it besides popularity.
It’ll probably surprise us in 2010 and become the top-selling console again. I think that the PS3 has a much longer life-span than the 360, with the Cell and the disk format that you sort of need unless you want more 5 hour campaigns. Until the next generation, it has a good chance to outsell the PS3, but in the lifetime of the consoles, I really have a hard time believing.

PS3 is leading the chart no doubt. Reason for Microsoft’s downfall is because they need games and a better quality console plus free online and did i say games also piracy is huge on Xbox 360. I upload Xbox 360 games free now.

Modding a gaming system did not work for me. I had a modded PSP for a while and I downloaded a bunch of games for it…but the problem was that I kind of lost interest in play the games, I only play them for about 10 mins, since I didnt pay for them I didnt even cared to play them for more than 10 mins or even finish those games…

How about you not answer a question with another question? And anyway, are you from Japan? You pointed out that it has been outselling the 360 since it was released, which is false. There have been times where both machines have spiked and plateaued, but to say that it’s been outselling the 360 since it has been released is asinine.
There are only two regions I am interested in, USA and Australia. USA because it’s the biggest gaming market in the world and thus sets the trends for gaming, and Australia for obvious reasons.
Re the PS3 sales people, i’ve noticed the same thing nearly everywhere also! Funny stuff.

The PS2 while being hack it was still selling millions of PS2 but also more importantly it was selling a lot of games. On Xbox 360 most multi-plaform games are just being pirated is hurting Microsoft plus developers and publishers. Microsoft should had been the one to mkae the more secured consoled since it what they do for years. They suck what everything wow. PS2 is still selling almost ten years that just wow amazing. Yes this is true but you need to have the actual retail disk to play online. This is good because all those games that don’t have multiplayer you can get on the cheap but to play online you will need the retail disk. One day I will hack my 360 but I will go the safe route and get a 2nd 360 because I don’t want to have my 360 blocked from LIVE.

No not neccessarly. It is possible to burn the file but you need to also add the patch to go online. The 360 is not the best hacked system because unlike the original Xbox you need a disk to play games but I understand that maybe there is a way to use the HD now but I’m not sure. Anyways with the current way it is being hacked you need to keep updating the hack so your games can work. I think it’s annoying.

I had lots of friends with “Slide Magic” the device that allowed you to swap discs and used burned ones once you loaded its own OS, a replicated bios that had the disc check trimmed, as well as dev kit debug mode added. It was pretty easy to use.
