September NPD Sales – PS3 beats all except DS, Halo 3: ODST is a triumph
The games industry seems to have at last stopped the slide which has seen revenues drop six months in succession. While the increase was only slight, with the holiday season just around the corner, things are most definitely looking up. The PS3 won the hardware battle as expected, with only the DS preventing it from managing a clean sweep. Meanwhile, Halo 3: ODST sold massively well, racking up sales of over 1.5 million units.

Sony was widely expected to have a great September thanks to the release of the PS3 Slim. And so it proved, with the console leading the home consoles by quite a margin and almost knocking the DS of its long-held top spot. Sales of the PS3 more than doubled when comparing this September to last September.
It’s not all good news for Sony, with the PSP and PS2 still languishing in the bottom two hardware sales spots. Both saw increases over last month though, which possibly indicated an upward swing for Christmas. In the software stakes, the PS3 version of The Beatles: Rock Band didn’t make the top ten but Madden NFL 10 and Batman: Arkham Asylum did.
Nintendo
The DS held off the PS3 in unit sales but actually saw a drop of 30,000 from August. Meanwhile, Nintendo managed to shift 200,000 more units of the Wii this month over last month. The Wii price cut came late in September which suggests the trend will continue into October.
Wii Sports Resort sold well but couldn’t compete with the latest Halo 3 game. The Wii version of The Beatles: Rock Band sneaked in to 10th, while Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story was a hit on the DS.
Microsoft
Not a bad month for Microsoft, with the Xbox 360 selling 130,000 more units in September than in August. It may still have been beaten into the ground by the PS3 but, as Aaron Greenberg likes to remind us all, the overall is so large in the U.S. that it’ll take more than the current monthly sales gaps for the Sony console to catch up.
Halo 3: ODST split opinion amongst critics and fans, but in terms of sales it cannot be faulted. The release of any Halo game now seems a license to print money for Bungie and Microsoft, so expect the franchise to be milked to death over the next few years. Xbox 360 games dominate the top ten software sales chart.

Gratz for Sony. It is great to see that the PS3 is finally gaining ground in the US. I have to wonder what the sales in other countries were, especially Japan. The PS2 is still selling, which is incredible (hopefully for gamers it will run out of juice soon–that might just get us backwards compatibility back). I have no interest whatsoever for handheld gaming.
Also, I beat Uncharted 2 a few days ago, maybe I already mentioned this. Beating it on crushing now, iPod Touch in hand for the treasures. Looking to get that platinum anytime, got it for the first game. Has to be the best single-player campaign… ever. I’m dumbfounded. Also pleased to finally find out what Nate is TRULY afraid of. More than the Spaniards and Sully’s Mustache COMBINED.

@ HArry – No I haven’t played ODST yet. I hear what your saying though, and while it has a meta score of 85, the user score is 6.5 / 10, or 65.
Myself personally am more sceptical when it comes to games and the hype surrounding them. E.G. I read a heap of reviews for NFS Shift (meta score 83), how great it was, how this was a must have etc etc, so I went and bought it and frankly thought it was shit, took it back and used the store credit to get UC2.
KZ2 (meta 91) is another example. It is a very good game with some great graphics and AI, but was very very short.
So far UC2 is restoring my faith, but I’m not that far into it yet so my faith is not fully restored.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m loving Demon’s Souls and UC2 right now (and hopefully this month’s sales results will show their brilliance), but it’s kind of hard to talk trash when the 360 is still beating PS3 in software sales by 500K not even counting ODST.

Kudos to Sony with these figures but I’m not entirely suprised by the results.
I’m just wondering if the momentum will remain with the PS3 during the holiday season especially when Modern Warfare 2 is rearing its head soon.

Depending on your tastes I found Brutal Legend awesome. It has a unique blend of lasting humour and suprisingly good gameplay. Heven’t completed it yet so I can’t comment on its longevity.

WOW. So it took a decent price drop to get the ps5th to drag its sorry ass past the Wii. I admit to call it the ps2nd for a while. Until next month when it levels out again below the 360 sales.

Im really impress with Demon’s Soul.
now I know why Sony’s games dont sell well. This game got not advertisement at all, This game came unnoticed to the US. To me this is the Deepest RPG I have played in a long time. Fallout/Oblivion give a bunch of options which barely changes the game…in Demon’s Souls each action has consequences and the beauty of the game is that you are stuck with the actions you make, because there is no save file to go back and re-do your mistakes.
looking at Demon’s Souls…the game has so much depth that you might think a game like this took years to make, but no SCEJ and From Software pulled it off and they made a beauty of an RPG and took a unique approach where it involves dying alot but you never get sick of it.
now I agree with CarLB this game is better than most FF games (though its lacking the story element but it makes up for it in gameplay). but there is one FF game that still gives me nightmare ragarding boss battles…..and thats FFXII.

I don’t care what any games rates by anyone but me. Not everyone thinks the same and what I think is great you may think is crap. Also you xbots ever think no one PS3 game out sells HALO because we have a lot more to choose from? Therefore the sales are spread out between all the awesome games we have to play. If they weren’t so dam expensive I would buy more games. As it is now I have about 14 PS3 games. I can’t afford to buy every new game that come out for the PS3, Uncharted, Killzone, Batman, Brutal Legend, ect… The list goes on and on. There are fewer types of people buying 360s and the biggest being FPS people. Go figure Halo sells well on a console aimed at FPS people. You guys would never make good business people the way you think.

I think the actual age demographic is younger on the 360 than the PS3.
This allows for statistics like play time and games purchased to be higher.
I don’t know about you, but I played games a lot more when I was younger with less responsibilities. Sometimes it seems like a pain just to get the time to get some games in.

here is a lil of my story with OMEGA 13
it took me about a month to find him (with the strategy guide) there wasnt any map on the screen so I had to figure out how to get to him in this huge Maze…every time you go to the wrong path you start from the beggining.
soo a month later I found his ass. I was got ready for a massive battle (he has over 50,000,000 HP). so after 5 hours of intense battles I noticed I didnt evev take 1% of his total HP. so I set up one of my character (through the FFXII gambit system) to only cast >Haste> Protect> M Barrier> Regen> Berserk> Curaga> Bubble. his job was to constantly repeat those 7 spells on my other 2 characters. uhmmmm so after 7 hours (at 2am) I go to go to sleep and I was only about 10% of his total HP. so I left the PS2 “ON” and continue the next day. I did the same procedure for about 2 weeks (the PS2 was ON for 2 whole weeks) playing about 7 hrs a day with breaks in between…..so he was had about 10% left of his total HP which was about 5,000,000 HP.
ok…so I was running out of potions, ether, and basically all my item/magics, so I needed to beat him quick. every once in a while he did his super attack which wiped out my whole team (except the one that werent in battle) so I had to get on of my reserve characters and revive and heal my team in about 30-45 seconds before OMEGA started healing himself. I revived and healed my team in about 30 secs successfully everytime, but that last time I was about 10-20 secs late and this mother fucker healed himself to alsmot 100%..it took 2 weeks of to get him down to 10%, so at that point was I was like fuck it.. and turn off my system.

Yeah, below lvl 100, it is a 10 level range that can co-op/invade. Above 100 is scales to a larger range as you go up in levels, but not sure on the numbers.

Speculation is that you need to be within 10 lvls of each other.
One of you need to be ‘alive’ (so kill a boss, or use one of the ressurection stones I can’t remember the exact name for em). The other needs to be in soul form.

I plan on making a few new characters just for having different levels available.
I am starting to work on my magic now, almost done obtaining all the weapons and rings, but need a few more playthroughs, and would like a few levels as well, heh, as each NG+ gets about 5% harder, according to general consensus on the long lived demon’s souls forums. I am still on my second playthrough, but the first NG+ is a bitch, and the levels have helped a shitload.

GTA is a Multiplatform game so try again Sega. And realize that GTA4 still sold more on the 360. As for your other mentions, the numbers are nothing to compare or even speak of. GTA was an ORIGINAL Playstation game. GTA ONLY became “multiplatform” because Microsuck became jealous and wanted to steal some fame away from Sony. And as for my other mention the numbers speak loud enough to determine that customers are more willing to buy a PS3 over a 360. The only reason why the 360 has “higher” numbers is because of it’s despicable fail rate.
So my opinion does matter, BITCH. In fact, it overshadows your demented illusion that the 360 is a better console. You must be high or smoking crack to think that the 360 has any chance of stopping the PS3.

This time the NPD report took long enough but it brought interesting results: Sony finally got a much needed break, H3ODST sells like crazy and DS/Wii sold much better than I expected. Another month of mental peace for me. Also I´ll be getting “Muramasa” and Dead “Space: Extraction” this weekend: Yay.

It was brilliant (and the night F1 was a blast).
I took a little visit to the 4 corners bar, we saw plenty of them outside so the shemale floor was given a swerve but on one of the other 3 floors I was the most attractive guy in Sing, sadly only for money but damn some of those er ‘professional’ girls were stunners.
Holiday of lifetime mate…..which is why I’m looking to go back next year if I can.

We stayed in District 1 (but travelled around a bit – the Chu Chi tunnels were worth the trip…..popping a stack of rounds off on the firing range there with the M16 & AK47 was a laugh).
I hear District 4 is the one to go for (or avoid) dependiong on your mariltal status and/or tendancies.
(there are 9 Districts I believe, each a little less er ‘flash’ than the last)
You could live very well on very little in Vietnam.

I bought it so I could play the ODST Missions which you can play co-op with 4 people and I can play Firefight which is amazing something I would not get with a regualr Halo 3 game, plus I got all the Multiplayer maps and the new ones and I get access the Halo Reach Beta when it drops plus. In Canada at Launch the PS3 was $699.00. I was $100 over sorry but that is still crazy. But Sorry Roca no Bending over, over here. The 360 had Games and Live was in full swing brought over from the original Xbox. PS3 No Games, The online was shitty and did not have the multiple updates that brought PSN it close to 360 specs. Yeah, why are the PS3 boys so outraged over a game that they probably haven’t played yet. The campaign took me about 7 and a half hours to complete, about the same time that it took me to do Arkham Asylum. There’s the firefight mode and there’s also every map pack. I own Halo 3 but I have not downloaded every map pack, and I am probably in a rather large % of people who haven’t. So ODST is fantastic value.
But really, WHY are you all so outraged over a game that you aren’t going to even play?
BTW, PS3 was $1000 when it was released here.

So they build up their defenses and find every reason they can to undermine that game, whether it be initial price, similar gameplay, same genre, different genre (as with Halo Wars), same engine, etc. while ignoring reviews that are largely better than the average PS3 exclusive title.
Their next argument is this year’s and next’s PS3 ECKSKLOOSIVES are SO COOL, therefore ME BETTER theory shows clearly in any and all comments they make. The bottom line is they do not distinguish and judge individual games based on their individual merit, only on the console they happen to be exclusive for. What a shame.
The Halo franchise represents everything the average PS3 fanboy hates: excellent reviews that match top PS3 titles and sales that literally blow away top PS3 titles in general. Therefore that hate will show clearly in comments they make.

If Halo was also on PS3 it would still be inferior here, as it is not a PS3 exclusive. This is the way the majority mindset works here, at least the most vocal. The PS3 exclusive library is king and always will be, even if it has years to materialize. You can’t “rip off” fans who are willing to pay a premium for the game/content when it first comes out, regardless of which console the game happens to be on. In other words, you can’t “rape the willing”.

Congratulations, you critiqued Sony for the same thing as well, sorry I missed it. BTW, what’s keeping Halo fans from waiting for the price to drop? As you said, it is a larger franchise than Disgaea or practically any other franchise I could name that charges a similar price for DLC, so why shouldn’t it command just as high a premium, if not more, upon initial release for those who are willing to pay for it? Is somebody holding a gun to their heads (Disgaea/Halo fans)? Nope.

First of all Halo is not made by Microsoft.
Second of all Halo 3 and ODST are not the same (is FFX and FFX-2 “the same because they look similar?”)
third…ODST is potentially a 100hrs + game as well.. you can get all the achievements, including the really tough ones, enter into international tournaments (i.e. “level up” in the real world) that feature the game and have said aformentioned “new experience” on a totally different level… people still play Halo 1 competitively, and they’ve owned it for years. These are fans of the genre and the franchise who are willing to pay a premium.
Why are you hating so much Roca? If you were a fan of the series I could empathize, but this is just… Ivan-like.

Regarding your second question about BC and USB ports enhancing a gaming experience. BC would definitely enhance it, as it gives you access to an entire library of games of the past generation. USB not so much, however you seem to forget that in your little lie filled statement, you didn’t actually mention about gameplay, you mentioned features.

harry, i must of missed it and toshithegreat i was doin that to be funny. you just happen to misunderstand me when i was saying ps3 is better in features and graphics. its too early to say the 360 is the “ps2″ when it hasnt even got god of war 3 and 360 has had like 3-4 halo games already…its like ms hitting sony in the mouth 3 rounds into the boxing match you now what im saying…let me put this in perspective to how i see.
Sony see’s this generation as a marathon while 360 sprinted and has slown down a bit. with that and also ps3 priced at $300 and “heavy hitters” coming i dont see ps3 slowing or being like the 1st xbox which died out btw haha

I’ve yet to even open Halo 3 so by the time I get around to it ODST will be around the sort of price I’ll be happy to pay.
Not sure even then when I’ll get to it, MW2 is a must (and I’ll not wait too long on that one, but I’m not paying a launch price on it even so) and Gears 2 is still so much fun with friends on-line.
