Review: Can Need for Speed: Shift save a dying franchise?
The Need for Speed franchise has been slowly sinking, but with the release of the latest iteration things may be finally turning around. Need for Speed: Shift crosses into new territory for the franchise with the game moving away from the street arcade racer and into the race sim genre.
It seems like EA finally realized that the company was slowly destroying the once legendary Need for Speed franchise and have decided to infuse some new blood into the series. EA turned the development of Need for Speed (NFS): Shift over to the capable hands of Slightly Mad Studios. As the name implies, the studio must have gone mad and completely revamped the NFS franchise by taking it away from cop chases and street races. NFS: Shift is a race simulator with some arcade flavor thrown in to distinguish it from Gran Turismo and Forza.

Design/Controls
With the transition to the racing sim genre, NFS: Shift ditches its story mode and puts you into the cockpit of the career mode. The career mode is exhaustive as it will supply you with over 200 different progressions and ranks to keep you busy for a very long time. One of your goals in the game will to achieve victory in the Need for Speed World Tour.
In addition to standard races there are time attacks, drift modes and car battles. In car battles gamers will be able to race against another vehicle with similar specs to determine if its the car that makes the driver or the other way around.
NFS: Shift tracks game progression by the number of stars you earn. Stars can be earned by your wining place, driver points and by also completing various objectives. Earning more stars will unlock different tiers, opening up new races and challenges.

One of the greatest feature within NFS: Shift that sets it apart from other racing sims is the leveling/RPG-like elements to the game. Gamers will be able to build up their driver profiles and can take it online and offline. As you earn experience points, you will level-up unlocking badges and additional garage slots. As you level up the game will also offer you more customization options and even unlock special race events. It seems like Slightly Mad Studios really knocked this RPG leveling system out of the park.

Need for Speed: Shift offers a competitive online mode where gamers can pit their driving skills in an eight player versus race. The game allows you to continue to level up by bringing in your badges and profile into the online games. There is also a cool Street Fighter like One on One Driver Dual mode. The objective of this mode is to race against another live player and win two out of three races.
Shift still has some arcade street twists injected into the game by offering upgrades such as over the top body kits and even nitrous. Gamers will be able to slap on aftermarket rims and designs onto the car as well.
The game features around 75 unique cars, which may pale in comparison to Forza and Gran Turismo, but NFS: Shift does have just about every fantasy car you would drool over. Unfortunately, the community features are not as strong as other games such as Forza 3. There is no replay save option and limited to a basic photo gallery mode.

Also, the game offers a great amount of assist options that gamers can turn on or off. However, making the game easier does not impact the points you can earn in anyway. The AI in the game is fantastic and suits Shift’s vibe. AI cars are aggressive and will even try to take each other out usually ending up in a fantastic crash.
Visuals
The damage in the game can be superficial or detrimental to the performance of the vehicle by tweaking some settings as well. The damage looks good as it seems to be dynamic deformation rather then just a matter of swapping out textures. The game looks extremely good compared to its predecessor. Apparently, Slightly Mad Studios used a new engine that was meant for a unreleased Ferrari game.
Need for Speed: Shift has one of the best looking cockpit views, with detailed knobs and dashboards. The view goes blurry and gray when you slam into a wall and the windshield cracks with every crash. Hitting the nitrous button will blur everything giving you the intense feeling of speed.

Wrap-Up
Need for Speed: Shift is a testament to the skills of Slightly Mad Studios. The game is solid with the right amount of mixtures of genres to deliver a new and innovative experience unlike any racer out there. Despite the lackluster online community features and some minor glitches the game manages to deliver and transcend any of the recent next gen Need for Speed offerings. EA definitely deserves kudos for handing off the franchise to a new and talented studio such as Slightly Mad Studios. If you want a racer that is part sim/arcade/RPG, look no further than Need for Speed: Shift.

4.5/5

LoL, showing the Xbox 360 case but playing the PS3 version sweet. Why would anyone buy any Need for Speed. Electronic Arts doesn’t make Need for Speed what. Only 75 cars GT PSP has 800 cars LoL and GT5 almost infinite. Story was gay anyone with common sense knew that especially when the cut scenes are done in real life not 3D. This game is worth buying if it was $30 like Forza Motorsport 3 needs to be priced at. You should review more often especially those awesome PS3 master pieces. Maybe one day Metacritic can add Gamer.Blorge to their long questionable reviewers list…

No, its its too twitchy once you get tier 1 stuff I found it almost impossible to play.

Holy shit, Need for Speed is also on PSP damn now I’m a play it. I saw all the consoles listed on Wikipedia.
Oh and Craigslist is my third favorite website in this world.

Is the soundtrack on it all hip hop r’n'b brap brap £££ crap?

I downloaded the demo and thought it was pretty terrible…I know I shouldn’t expect GT5 standard modelling in every racing game I play, but the interiors looked worse than Forza 3, which is a pretty unique achievement.
October 21st, 2009
they should have stick with “street racing”

I forgot about the demo. I might download it just to check it out.

I wish my PS3 would let me install Need for Speed: Shift, Brutal Legends and UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves the demos so i can at least try them UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves works sometime on my 60GB HDD. After firmware 3.0 and the date UNCHARTED 2 Demo came out my PS3 has been kind of dying sometimes it won’t read disc so i have to restore settings and it gets fix weird. I hope the next useless firmware helps a little bit. I haven’t touched my PS3 in a while using it today getting another backwards compatible PS3 my third one, for $75 but it doesn’t read disc but everything else works fine i was told. Pick this baby up in less then 4 hours.

Thought the Demo sucked. Erased it pretty quick.

Just seen that Need for Speed has passed 100 million units sold.
So much injustice it’s untrue.
October 21st, 2009
damn….is that the best selling franchise?
besides Mario of course…Mario cheated
Mario has at least 15-20 years advantage on every other game
I will guess Street Fighter is also pretty high, since there has been 27 of them

Mike the game is a failure mainly because it is trying to be a Forza/GT type simulator game. Just do one search on Forza 3 vs NFS Shift and you will see that the consensus is that the driving is not realistic and the Forza is way superior when it comes to the driving dynamics. people are just complaining about how the handeling sucks in shift. It looks good but that is about it. It’s a game that will sit on the shelf for me. I should try the demo though as I did download it.

NFS franchise should have just gone cell shaded and had play-by-play commentary in the form of excited japanese game show hosts.
And boobs. Could use some boobs.
Otherwise, I think it should be taken out back and shot.
October 21st, 2009
speaking of boobs… anyone see the last Dante’s Inferno Lust gameplay with unbabtized babies with knives for arms coming out of Cleopatra’s nipples?
October 21st, 2009
Now there are some killer boobs.
Unrelated, but with the site revamp, have the forums been axed? I know they weren’t getting used, but I realized how many Demon’s souls discussions some of us were getting into on the response threads, so I was going to make a thread in the forum, but haven’t been able to find it, hah.

I bought it, played it for a couple of days to give it a go, then took it back and used my refund to by UC2.
Sorry Mike, but while I admire your optimism this game sucked worse than that movie Battlefield Earth.
And the sad thing is all the magazines and websites that I have seen that have done reviews said it was great, yet actual gamers all said it sucked.

Seriously Iva do you own like 3 PS3’s? What for???? No personal attack there….I just don’t see the logic in owning duplicate consoles unless it’s for siblings.

Sorry typo. I meant IVAN.

“Only 75 cars GT PSP has 800 cars LoL and GT5 almost infinite.”
“The game boasts a total of 800 cars, but only 200-250 of those are actually unique models.”
psxextreme.com/psp-reviews/135.html
“Main features include over 950 cars” which if similar boasted as with the PSP version means about 300 actually unique models.
us.gran-turismo.com/us/news/d5075.html
But which is more important… how many cars a game has or how well it plays?
Forza Motorsport 2 (2007): 90
Forza Motorsport 3 (2009): 92
Need for Speed Shift (2009): 84
Need for Speed Most Wanted (2005): 83
GT5 Prologue (2008): 80
GTPSP (2009): 75
GT5: ??

You’re silly for focusing on consoles instead of individual games for their own merit. If the “Xbox is garbage” then why do you own one?

Good question.
October 22nd, 2009
thats not a fair comparation Carlb and you know it.
comparing 2 full Forza game to a Prologue game and a strip down verion of GT4.
its just like compering Killzone 2 (92) vs ODST (84)

“I just don’t see the logic in owning duplicate consoles unless it’s for siblings.”
I own two for two reasons. One because my kids take over every time I start it up. two because they make Great Media Centers. I read all my comics on the wall and it works great.
We all know Ivan will never have kids and why would he buy one for a sibling? LOL

“We all know Ivan will never have kids and why would he buy one for a sibling? LOL”
At least we hope not
October 22nd, 2009
@roca,
How is it not fair? I didn’t compare them directly, I only used the average review scores for their respective present gen consoles. Are you saying there can’t be or aren’t well reviewed games on the PSP? GTPSP could have been the best racing game on the PSP, but it’s not. Wipeout Pure, Burnout Legends, and Ridge Racer all did much better. But if it makes you feel better, Need for Speed on PSP did slightly worse on PSP, and shift much worse. Forza has no other iterations unless we dip back into last gen.
GTPr could have been the best partial game on the PS3… ODST certainly did well for what people who haven’t played it here call only a partial game. You could also say it’s like comparing Wolfenstein (72) with ODST (84).
Look, I wasn’t trying to say “this is better than that”, but only compare what has come out this gen for each respective franchise. It could be a pattern, it might not be. GT5 could come out awesome and get great reviews, and it might come out worse than Forza 3 (though plenty of the sages here who also predicted Haze and Lair would be awesome exclusives will tell you otherwise)… it’s up in the air.
October 22nd, 2009
the ODST argument is not about if the game is good or bad.
its about M$ raping the halo fanbase. ODST was suppose to be $40 but two months before the game was released M$ announced the game is going to retail for $60 because they know ppl will still buy it. granted the Halo is a solid franchise but why let a company who has millions of dollars do their customer like that…it’s not because it comes from M$, its just the same with MW2 selling for $70 in the UK. Granted the game its good but why steal money from you fanbase. they all did because they Know the fans will buy even if they know they are bending over an taking it all the way
October 22nd, 2009
Well I’m happy with ODST. Roca you don’t have a 360 so why do you care? It’s not like were trying to get you to buy a 360 the way you like to push the PS3 on us. You got raped when you bought your first PS3 and that was rape/homicide. Just go play wiht you PS3 and stop trying to look through the window into our world. You should be more pissed of about how Sony treated you in those first 3 years. There is something to gripe about.
October 22nd, 2009
CAD
I just stated that is not about the 360 or about Halo…its about companies abusing their fanbase. if GoW collection was to retail for $60 I will be the first one to be heated about it. and You know if Sony wanted they could easly get away with it because many fans will still buy it..just like buy ODST.
CAD: “Just go play wiht you PS3 and stop trying to look through the window into our world. You should be more pissed of about how Sony treated you in those first 3 years”
Sony’s philosophy is more towards its consumers (believe it or not).Free Online service, Free MMOs, Dedicated Server running their games so player can have a better experience -lag free, no propetary pheripheral/accessories. and releasing games on a regular basis
so hows your 360 been trying for the past 4 years. Ohh thats right!! I almost forgot you have been only playing Gears and Halo.
October 22nd, 2009
I forgot to say…Free DLC remains free on the PSN.
while M$ force devs to charge for free DLC
October 22nd, 2009
@roca,
Agreed, it is sad to see Sony letting NIS charge $50 for DLC separately from the game as well. Unfortunately, you can’t rape the willing.
As for God of War Collection, perhaps their asking price is a bit high considering previous offerings like the Orange Box and Capcom Triple Hits pack (Dead Rising, Lost Planet, DMC4 – all present gen) sell for the same or less. I’ll still play it, just because I’m a fan, and I can understand people who would buy it even for $60 (or Disgaea 2,3 &DLC for $170), because they are fans. Not sure why you can’t.
History has shown these titles come down in price soon anyway (at least for 360 titles, Resistance 2 seems to be an exception along with other PS3 titles).
October 22nd, 2009
I’d still buy the GOW collection if it was $60. I would bitch and moan about it though.
I’d also be hard pressed to defend my position other than I really really like GOW.
As it is, NOONE can complain about its price. It cost less than both GOW1 and GOW2 greatest hits do and it includes more content.
I still can’t get over the amount of people that have yet to play those games. It’s really doing a disservice to themselves……
October 22nd, 2009
Complaining about game prices while people still buy it in droves makes no sense to me… case in point Madden. If people don’t buy it then the price will come down. People still buy it in record numbers.
phranctoast, SOMEONE will complain somewhere, no matter what the price, guaranteed. They added game content? I thought they just enabled trophies and remastered these last gen games in HD… God of War I&II were truly good gaming experiences, here’s hoping collection does very well.

@roca..
Well i thought, its coz sony were trying to one up microsoft but u make it look like they are running a charity or something.. It already had taken a lead, they could charge for psn, coz nobody would have payed for their network, in comparison to live.. Didnt charged for propietary accersories, as it wud have already put off a lot of the end consumer, when he already was buying a 600$ machine..
So make it out as a good business sense or something but puhleez no fan service/love for gaming..
Ahh feels like i m done.. Been here, seen that. bye

I m sure, u r arguing for the “RIGHT” cause, u ll ask sony/PD, why they have mada a habbit [business practise] of releasing & selling Preview/Demo/”PROLOGUE” before their games..
October 23rd, 2009
Or as to why they will soon sell PS2 titles over PSN at a premium (not getting the GoWC treatment) while not providing PS2 disc BC in their hardware. LoL.
October 23rd, 2009
CarlB..
I didnt say Sony was “ALL” for the costumers. all companies has its good and bad sides. but right now Sony seems to be doing more for its constumers. the Practice of Free MMOs is huge. FREE “XBL-alike” service is alse a welcome to many
October 23rd, 2009
Sounds like a different market to me roca… kind of like the casual market and Wii. While it may be huge, I can only speak for myself here in saying, great, kudos they are coming out with it… sometime? In any case, I’ve had the same option for years on my pc and have not taken advantage of it because it doesn’t appeal to me personally. I tried Free Realms recently, but it just doesn’t seem that appealing. I’m sure you will enjoy. Yes, many people do enjoy XBL Silver… maybe as many or more than PSN… don’t know.
October 23rd, 2009
“Yes, many people do enjoy XBL Silver… maybe as many or more than PSN… don’t know”
thats probably because they dont want to pay for GOLD and they dont have a PS3
why you always try to twist everything into a PS3 vs Xbox? is it that hard to accept that M$ is less forgiving to its costumers.
October 23rd, 2009
I thot its a common knowledge, that hardware companies take a hit on their sales, while earning from selling accesories and services.. Thats something that mS is doing.. And i dont feel that they are doing anything wrong there,
And before u bring ps3 in question, well it got what it wanted, it has made blu-ray the new standard, which anyday will make much more money in other divisions, compared to gaming..
October 23rd, 2009
“Sony’s philosophy is more towards its consumers (believe it or not).Free Online service, Free MMOs, Dedicated Server running their games so player can have a better experience -lag free, no propetary pheripheral/accessories. and releasing games on a regular basis”
Roca
I personally don’t think Sony’s philosophy is more towards its consumers. It’s more like playing catch up to Microsoft. Free Online and Free MMO is expected for a company that ignored it’s customers in the begining in an effort to win a format. Besides their are Free MMO’s on the 360 to and remember you only have to pay to play online otherwise Live is Free. I also explained this to you already so I don’t know why you keep preaching this lie but the 360 also uses dedicated servers and Live is still better then PSN and continues to get better. As for no propetary pheripheral/accessories well I guess you did not need to go out and buy that HDMI Cable or your Blutooth headset or your blutooth remote or a new controller when your battery dies or a steering wheel controller or PS Eye Camera or a Wand. As for game on a regular basis well the jury is still out on that one. It took 2 years to have a decent lineup for 2009. More years have to go by before you can claim they are consistent.
October 23rd, 2009
“I’d still buy the GOW collection if it was $60. I would bitch and moan about it though.
I’d also be hard pressed to defend my position other than I really really like GOW.”
WOW, this is coming from a guy who said ODST buyers are being raped.
October 23rd, 2009
“why you always try to twist everything into a PS3 vs Xbox?”
I was just responding to you, and you had already twisted it into PS3/360. At other times, I mention Sony’s examples when certain people only want to call out Microsoft for a one-sided argument.
“is it that hard to accept that M$ is less forgiving to its costumers.”
Is it that hard to accept that Sony is just as unforgiving to it’s customers, and when it is not, it means they are behind and need to do something, anything, whatever they can to gain market share?
This might have been a different conversation if they didn’t force me to buy features (like wi-fi, free internet, etc.) I do not want or need while leaving out previously promised features that they even talked trash about at launch (like full/superior BC).
Sony and Microsoft are companies, and they are not about “forgiveness” unless that is profitable. Don’t ever fool yourself into thinking one company is somehow more emotionally invested in it’s customers than the other (or more customer based than the other, or more “forgiving” than the other, etc.), it just is not true.
October 23rd, 2009
dont start the pros and cons of consoles bc you know M$ has more cons than anybody else in the business.
I dont think you get the point I was trying to make. I thought I already mention Sony has its Cons too. but M$ is less forgiving. why you think ppl started writing Microsoft in the form of “M$” because they are more than likely to charge its customers for stuff that are suppose to be free. you know it!
Gears Map pack anybody???????
October 23rd, 2009
“Sony and Microsoft are companies, and they are not about “forgiveness” unless that is profitable.”
yeah but Sony charges Devs instead of cosumers
October 23rd, 2009
“you know M$ has more cons than anybody else in the business.”
No, Sony has just as many cons, they’ve just been around longer, so they are not as glaring to you. MS is just as “forgiving” as Sony (whatever that means in business terms). People started writing Microsoft in the form of M$ for one of two reasons, they are either blind fanboys who can’t use the proper term (like those who use the term PS3rd/4th/5th etc.) and/or recognize that Microsoft has made a ton of money and will likely continue to do so. “$ony” isn’t as common as PS3 is still in last place and they do not have as much, or as popular, computer software on the market, and Sony has been around much longer.
In any case, non-fanboys don’t use terms like “M$”, “PS3rd”/4th/5th, “XBot”, etc.
“Sony charges Devs” for free demo content, Microsoft does not, and customers can get that with XBL Silver free, good point. If you were a dev, would you really want to spend upwards of $300,000 for a “free” demo on one console, when you could just put it on the other for free?
“yeah but Sony charges Devs instead of cosumers”
Really? Sony charges Devs for their consoles and software instead of consumers? News to me. Ah, you say on the online multiplayer, correct? Well, in the short time I’ve had it PS3 has kicked me offline more than twenty times, with each of the four games I’ve played (no it wasn’t my connection, as it was rock steady on my laptop), and in the nearly four years I’ve owned a 360, this happened to me personally only twice. So yes, you have to pay extra for some extra stability, and considering I save more money than I was paying Netflix before (even without XBL Gold) and able to watch more content that I want at the same time, anytime, I don’t mind paying about $3 a month for it. If I wasn’t into Netflix I wouldn’t have to pay anything as a consumer as I don’t want or need multiplayer in any of the games I play.
October 23rd, 2009
“why you always try to twist everything into a PS3 vs Xbox”
October 24th, 2009
“Sony charges Devs for their consoles and software instead of consumers?”
how pathetic is to try to switch stuff around when you know we were talking about companies charging for “free” stuff
October 24th, 2009
Oh come on roca, lighten up and read it in context.
Either company you talk about when it comes to home consoles has their own history of charging/charging more for stuff that is/was free/less expensive on PC. And even they didn’t, PC and console are two different animals, and we still don’t know over half of what goes on behind closed doors with either company we talk about.
To sum it up, no company is “more forgiving” than the other, it’s just an illusion fanboys create to back up their console/company of choice. I thought you were more mature than to fall into that pack.
If one company gives more stuff away for free that could potentially draw revenue, it is because they need to increase their install base, and fast.
You mentioned Gears of War Map Pack, I’m looking at them now… all DLC is free, including map packs… Brady has some strategy guides they charge for.
Gears of War 2 map packs have made over a quarter million in revenue in a little over six months so far… would you give away a $250,000 for free to fans of the series who would gladly pay for the content anyway? I wouldn’t. Do the map packs include achievements? Yes. Free map packs don’t. Are fans willing to pay for that? Hell yes, as witnessed by the sales. Fans vote with their dollars. Next please.
BTW, I didn’t know you owned a 360, what’s your gamertag?
October 24th, 2009
well there is a difference between giving away 250,000 of DLC and “not allowing Free DLC” to be free.
sure they are free now because M$ cant afford to lose the support of Epic.
wouldnt you rather have free DLC than paying for it.
“To sum it up, no company is “more forgiving” than the other”
hahaa…good come back, M$ is know for stealing from its costumers, whether is via Windows, Xbox, pheripheral and all that Jazz…
and the Term M$ existed way before the xbox came out. go figure.
what can you say about the PS3, no 4-UBS ports? no BC? vs NOT FREE ONLINE GAME PLAY, no FREE DLC, Propetary accessories, Crappy HARDWARE, the POWER BRICK COST $100, and more.
I know Sony also has its flaws because no company is perfect but M$ is known for ass raping their fanbase. i know it hurts to admit it and say you beloved M$ is doing their fanclub like this.
gamertag? do you want it to play with me or to prove me wrong like other ppl who have nothing better to do? if its to play with me(even though I doubt because you dont play online) I dont have a 360 but you can hit me up on the PSN.
October 24th, 2009
I’ve already got you on PSN roca, and it’s to compare gamerscore, achievements, and msg occasionally.
I suggest you stop using the term “M$” if you don’t want to be seen as a fanboy and seem at least halfway intelligent. Saying “M$ is know for stealing from its customers” if you do not even own the console just shows you are talking from secondhand disinformation. If you want to talk about windows then we could say the same thing about “fresh start” and Sony wanting to charge $50 for free crapware until they backpedaled from the backlash.
“M$ is know for stealing from its customers”
please. Okay fine: “$ony is known for stealing from it’s customers whether it is VAIO software, Playstation, peripherals, and all that jazz.” Whatever. People pay money for what they want, whether it is Sony or Microsoft products.
Still using fanboy terminology I see, oh well. I really don’t like to talk trash about consoles, but since you asked so nicely about what I could say about PS3 that I don’t like so far: no 4 USB ports, no full BC (let alone the fact that it was put in and then taken out), Crappy FIRMWARE UPDATES that freeze games, constantly getting kicked offline (and I don’t even play multiplayer), the KEYPAD COSTS $50, and more. No I don’t like these aspects about Playstation as I don’t like the strong possibility they will charge me extra for PS2 games that I already own via PSN in the near future. In spite of all the things I don’t like about Sony and Microsoft, I still enjoy gaming on PS3 and 360, and recognize the companies for what they are: entities that are here to make money and that make missteps occasionally.
Yes, my 360 went down after nearly four years of play, sorry I haven’t gotten that far with my PS3 yet, and neither have you. No… haven’t had to replace the power brick sorry not that much of a dumbass to plug it into the wrong socket without a transformer… but since you are so concerned, they can be had for as little as $15 new here:
google.com/products?q=xbox+360+power+supply+brick&oe=utf-8&hl=en&cond=1
“I know Microsoft has it’s flaws because no company is perfect but $ony is known for ass raping their fanbase. I know it hurts to admit it and say your beloved $ony has done their fanclub like this.” Sounds about as ridiculous as what you just said. You don’t even know what you are talking about, as you don’t even own the product.
Yes, don’t fool yourself, 360 has free DLC (just like the free map packs mentioned above) and has given away free games before. If you were a “customer” you would know this, instead of talking trash blindly like a fanboy.
What proprietary accessories? You mean the hard drive? Yes, I agree, that does suck, but I haven’t really needed the extra space over my old 20GB, and everything else can be bought third party. It doesn’t affect me.

I know Sony also has its flaws because no company is perfect but M$ is known for ass raping their fanbase. i know it hurts to admit it and say you beloved M$ is doing their fanclub like this.
gamertag? do you want it to play with me or to prove me wrong like other ppl who have nothing better to do? if its to play with me(even though I doubt because you dont play online) I dont have a 360 but you can hit me up on the PSN”
@roca
hey thats good, if u feel that sony isnt ass raping u, i think, u shud be with ur purchase..
Which does not looks like it, the way u put down 360 and its userbase at every opportunity to make u feel good abt ur purchase..
and if i m wrong, and u do are happy with ur purchase, then why bother with the competition, go and have happy times gaming..:)
