Uncharted 2 in a word – QTE… which is more of an acronym, and I’m a pedant

Uncharted 2 in a word - QTE... which is more of an acronym, and I'm a pedantWhy spend pages and pages talking about a game – its good points, bad points, graphics, gameplay, etc. – when one word would do the job? That is at least what PS3 Informer wants you to believe. And its latest victim selection for the dubious honor is Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.

Uncharted 2 has gained some truly outstanding reviews and some truly astounding review scores. And everyone I know who has played it pretty much agrees that while not perfect, it is a brilliant game well worth the asking price.

PS3 Informer has summed up the game as they see it with one word: QTE, which is actually an acronym short for Quick Time Event, which by my count is three words. The site’s argument for why QTE sums the game up is that the addition of a few of these Quick Time Events is what sets the game apart from its predecessor.

I can think of a lot more words better suited to sum Uncharted 2 up. Class, brilliant, addictive, short, sweet, Drake, story, filmic, and quality all immediately spring to mind. But QTE, which isn’t even one word? That deserves its own one word review: Fail.

My copy is still sitting on my shelf. It’s been staring longingly at me.

At this rate I should be ready to boot it up in a few more weeks. I’m starting to fly through the levels in DS quicker. Old Monk got his ass kicked tonight ;)

  2. SW:

I kept getting killed on old monk until it matched me with an AI instead of a human :(

I find magic sucks against fleshlings because they, like me, have 99 full moon grass to use.

    AI was easy tho ;)

  3. Ivan_PSP:

The game has exceeded perfection. Only on PlayStation.

  4. Ghost:

Hahah I must have twenty of those damn head wraps…The old bastard kept summoning me to do his dirty work for him…lol

  5. The Future of Sega:

Can’t wait till friday to purchase Un2 :)

“And everyone I know who has played it pretty much agrees that while not perfect”

ah dave, you must have the fortune of not knowing Ivan, who claims it is perfect without even playing the retail version yet :)

The game is great, but I agree with you it is definitely short. Fortunately I have only had to reset it twice due to the game freezing, and the only load times are when you first load up the game.

While the game still has plenty of jaggies and graphical imperfections, it is a vast improvement over the original. The gameplay is largely unchanged… is it wrong to think Demon’s Souls is a superior gameplay experience?

QTE? I find that hard to believe. I have only played the first, will hopefully get to play the second one soon (when the brother in law buys a copy) so I can’t really comment on it yet.

  8. noob:

What QTE?! The only ones I’ve noticed are the occasional prompts during a melee, and they’re more of a reminder of the controls than anything else. Otherwise the player’s in full control. Reading his ‘review’, it seems this guy at PS3 Informer has misunderstood what a Quick Time Event is.

  9. phranctoast:

The first had very few QTE’s. I remember a part where something was going to drop on you and you had to hit “O” before to roll out of the way. That may be the only time i recall a QTE in either one of the games. I’m sorry….tapping triangel to talk to someoen or open doors doesn’t constitute QTE in the definition people have given.

Maybe they meant Quality, Totally Enjoyable.
    That at least makes sense.

It took be slightly under 14 hours to beat U2. I got stuck twice so they may have ate up 1/2 hour of time…..I don’t really know how long a games is supposed to be to not be short. I figured 6 hours was short. 8-10 hours medium, and depending on the game genre over that time would be considered long. It crashed on me once during the train boss car. A grenade was going off right next to be while I was in a hand to hand fight with the boss. I reloaded and I was right back at that train car.

I’m with Carlb here….but I think this only falls under RPG fans like us. I havent even finish uncharted yet because im so into Demon’s Souls right.

    Phranc,

the first one was 8-10 hrs long (avarage)
U2 is supposed to be 10-12 hrs long (avarage)
if you skip cuts scene and fly through the game you might beat it in less time though

  11. phranctoast:

It has about 1-1/2 hours of cutscenes. Now it’s time to get into the MP.

SW: “I kept getting killed on old monk until it matched me with an AI instead of a human ”

I got invated yesterday..the dude had a scary armor so I ran away from him..I tried to get away by jumb down from platform to platform (the quick way to flameLurker) and the Invator fell to his death :D

  13. SW:

    Yay \o/ :D

I’ve found that if they get close, then do not run.

With the lag thats present in some cases and because of the melee gameplay you can get hit with swords when it looks like someone is 10 feet from you – or worse, back stabbed.

  14. ncaissie:

How do I beat the big guy in Brutal Legand that has Turt and Pain on his fist?
I pounded on that guy for a long time.
    What am I missing?

  15. JofaMang:

I have only lost to a few invasions, and that was before I worked on my magic defense. Some magic users will get close with me, but I somehow manage to pull it out, hah.

I am definitely making a new character as a pure caster. I could work on my stats and do the same thing, but at this level, it takes a long time to earn 50 points toward skills, lol.

  16. phranctoast:

“I pounded on that guy for a long time.”

    heheh.

  17. harry sachz:

    haha phranctoast.

  18. Barnabe Jones:

    *knocks on wood*

I haven’t lost an invasion yet. To be fair, I’ve always been invaded near the start of the level, so I know exactaly where they are coming from.

  19. Roca.:

    BJ,

when are you planning on opening up your U2 game?

or did you just buy for display purposes ;)

  20. ncaissie:

    haha funny.

  21. Ivan_PSP:

    Roca.:
The game is stunning as hell i agree with you there but people that already got it did because the game is just exceeding perfection in all aspect of the game.
