Microsoft wrong about PS3 position history but right about sales boost longevity
Microsoft representatives have always entertained the gaming industry with their little quips and snide remarks when it comes to the competition between the Xbox 360 and Sony’s PS3. When asked about the PS3’s sudden surge in sales, a Microsoft rep made an interesting snide remark.
I always seem to find the remarks coming out of Microsoft’s Xbox camp humorous. We have compiled a list of times Turn 10 folks bad mouthed Polyphony Digital. We also complied a list of times the charismatic Aaron Greenberg flung mud as well.

It really is interesting, I stated in the Aaron Greenberg article that I am working on compiling a similar list for Sony and listed one incident earlier this year in January where Kaz said something ridiculous about the Xbox 360. However, I have to honestly say Sony has been acting professional for the majority of the year.
In light of the recent NPD report showing the PS3 taking the number one spot out of the three consoles, reaction from Microsoft have been pretty harsh. When asked by Seatle Pi about the PS3’s recent surge in sales, David Dennis, spokesperson for Xbox division made some disparaging remarks. Dennis initially stated that the company feels great about the Xbox 360 sales figures and also expected Sony to have a great month. Up to this point the response seemed cordial, but then it all went downhill.
Dennis then stated, "We expect it to be short-term and we expect them to be back down to third place soon like they’ve always been.” Ouch! Those are definitely some fighting words. To break down his response, Dennis is technically only half correct.
The PS3 outsold the Xbox 360 for more than half the year in 2008. The PS3 also ended up selling exactly the same amount as the Xbox 360 (10.7 mil) in 2008. So, to say something like, “…third place soon like they’ve always been” seems a bit arrogant. Actually, when you look at the price drop for the Xbox 360 last year in 2008, that was the turning point for the system enabling it to catch up to the PS3’s lead that year.
Microsoft announced the Xbox 360 price drop last year around September and Sony announced the PS3 price drop around the same time this year. Could this be last year in reverse, but ultimately ending in the PS3 and Xbox 360 selling about the same amount this year again? One thing Dennis is correct about is that the sales surge the PS3 is experiencing won’t last long just like any other price cut whether its the Xbox 360 or PS3.

Personally, I don’t think it’s too difficult to imagine the PS3 getting really close to the 360 next year; the PS3 undoubtedly has the most powerful line up, what with GOW3 and GT5.
Although we’ve yet to see who’ll hold the Grand Theft Auto V advantage…hopefully we’ll find out at E3

PS3 is doing fine with sales. All of those PS3 stereotypes (no games, too expensive, AND TEH SALEZ) are all bullcrap at this point in time.
I don’t like Microsoft, and I don’t like their techniques. Running into this generation with a poorly-made console and close to no first-party studios backing them up, going around and spending $50 million on DLC and god knows how much on timed exclusives. The console-quality crocodile already bit them in the ass, and the truth behind those PS3 stereotypes is nipping from an arm’s length.

Microsoft is feeling very afraid of becoming third, soon which we all know is gonna happen. And yes Microsoft is run by mostly stupid arrogant morons and idiots you can tell by the way they talk. Sony is destine to outsell them, look at their exclusives they are all exceeding perfection. Also you get more features and a better quality console plus free online service and Netflix too also. Sony is run by visionary and passionate business men. And every time you see Kaz Hirai on the E3 stage you can tell he was born for gaming. It shows how much and how much fate he got on the product he is selling. That’s another reason why I’m a loyal Sony fanatic. Sony is after achieving greatness and full control of all things gaming and they are truly going get that soon.

And let get this straight Mike it is obvious that the man is clearly pointing to the fact that Sony is in third place which is exactly where they are right now and he is basically saying they are going to stay right there because even if your senerio plays out Sony will still be in last place at the end of this year period. It is obvious that Everyone copies from everyone but at least be the first at something. It’s called innovation. Besides optical disk based games what has Sony actaully brought to the industry. Nothing!! I don’t knock Nintendo and Microsoft for doing it because they actually are responsible for innovation in this industry. Everything about the PS3 is an idea that already exsist on either the Wii or the 360.

The most obvious MS rip off is Natal. It doesn’t get any clearer than that.
Trophies on the psn would be a close second.

Peripherals rarely become popular. The Wii may not be as successful if the wand was just a gamecube accessory.
Look at the ps3 not having a headset included as an example as not everyone uses voice chat on psn. Kind of similar.

Well they certainly have a good selection of critically acclaimed games, shame that doesn’t actually translate to high sales figures. Until Sony can actually start selling their games in the volumes that Microsoft can them they will always trail behind the 360.

Same as when Sony start their usual patronising bombastic BS (their ‘the next gen starts when we say so’ is a classic example).
Besides, the guy is right.
The short-term sales boost has already begun to drop off in Japan and once all those who were waiting on the price-cut and the slim do their buying it will be the same story everywhere else too.
The fact is that even the new lower price slim is more expensive than the Wii and the Arcade and the Elite (and in the UK & Europe the slim on it’s own is more expensive than the new Super Elite bundle with Forza & 2 controllers – the MW2 bundle is about the same as a bare slim).
PS3 still has 3rd place written all over it.
The post-Xmas numbers will be the ones to look out for.
The boost will be well & truly over by then, as usual.

Natal isn’t just a camera and neither is Eye Toy.
It’s basically for motion control. Having a camera that also tracks motion for input in a console game, is clearly ripping off the other product. Its funny how few people really know what ps eye and eye toy could do.
The only original thing MS did was take others ideas and make it available on a console. Kind of like Halos success.
A lot of Lives features existed on the PC and was in a program called Xfire.

buddy…It’s a camera that detects motion. Natal is obviously the next evolutionary step of ps eye, but the concept is there and simple enough for anyone to see it. I find it really difficult to believe that you can be that blind. You’re reluctance to admit that Natal wouldn’t exist without the existence of the ps eye and eye toy is outright comical.

It is clear that while Natal is concocted from the whole Motion Control fenom that the Wii introduced, that Natal has take motion control to the next level.

Natal, while being like, is not a rip-off of the PS eye. That Isralie company that displayed it’s product at CES is the maker of Natal and all Microsoft did was buy the company. If it was not for Natal I don’t think Sony even knew what the eye could do. Also the tecnology behind Natal is far superior to the PS eye Camera. It’s not a direct copy. It’s an improvement that takes it to the next level. Do you understand that. IT’S NOT A DIRECT COPY BUT AN IMPROVEMENT. Like I said, Sony is not know for innovation. Copying can happen but at least contribitute and not be a leecher.

Sony was losing money on every console sold until couple month ago (-$200 at lunch) and you dont any sign of slowing down from Sony or you dont see them stop producing tons of games on a regular basis. most games are profitable after it reaches 250,000-500,000 units

Well actually your wrong. He clearly states that the sales bump in NPD report will be short lived and that they will drop back down to 3rd place as they have always been.
Its obvious he is talking about NPD positioning, and right now PS3 is number one from the console perspective. And I pointed out that last year over half the year the PS3 was number two above the 360. This is what I am pointing out.

The PS3 slim is a brand new consumer electronic product, so it’s bound to be losing money early on…but there’s no doubt by next year at the latest it will be profitable.

So if Netflix streaming is added to the PS3, I see the failure of Blu-Ray in the horizon. Basically, being a netflix subscriber allows you free streaming on PS3. In addition, a lot of local TV show started streaming on the internet. Last but not least, torrentz will be next. The future of PS3 will be VIO (however u spell that). PS3 becoming similar to PC.
For the record the ps3 wand is a controller and natal is controlless and it’s big difference.
MS states that keyboard and mouse would not be released for XBOX because the latter is a console.

The reason why so many people looked everywhere except Blu-ray for the next move is precisely because of what we have seen.
Blu-ray is a format that largely revolves around the PS3.
It is still needing regular firmware updates to play discs properly.
New releases are still too expensive (with a few noteable exceptions).
It is growing far too slowly in the mass-market.
In short Blu-ray was the worst possible choice if seeing HD movies on disc take-off in the mass-market was what you wanted to see happen.
…….and this is not BD verses Netflix.
It’s BD verses every other means of obtaining content.
It’s known as ‘the market’.
A market Blu-ray is singularlky failing to capture.
Once you take account of the enormous boost the PS3 gave the format (several million players out there in short order – many of them with freebie movies to try and drive home the point) it’s growth is ridiculously slow.
It is currently behind (admittedly not by a vast margin) DVD’s growth (and DVD did not get the (‘Playstation boost’ until was into its 4th year)
With practically every new HD TV and even the Blu-ray players all coming with proper net streaming it’s abvious to all (except the blinkered Sony/PS3/Blu-ray fanclub) that Blu-ray cannot become ‘the next DVD’, it’s just another minority niche in the overall market.

Don’t be paranoid, I was just saying it works both ways. I could not come anywhere close to “one upping” you, even if I tried, as you have 5 times more posts here alone than me.
To let you know, at least from my own personal experience, Hulu and other streaming services through my PC do not even come close to matching Netflix HD streaming through the 360. So no, it does not just “make things easier and more accessible”, it has much more content and that content is of a much higher visual quality, at least in my individual case. I’m not saying these other services cannot reach this high visual quality on Netflix, just that they haven’t in my own limited experience.
I’m sure PS3 is more than technically capable of matching anything on 360, whether it does with this particular service is yet to be seen. I was just speculating on the quality and presentation as it will be at no extra charge. We’ll have to wait and see how it turns out, and I will be one of the first in line to try it out next month. If it’s of equal quality or better, I will also be one of the first to make the switch.

I never said I was impartial, and I don’t consider myself to be either, although other people here have complemented me by saying I have that quality. So yes, I am partial, as I am human and cannot play all five of my consoles at once paying equal amounts of attention to each. For instance, for the last month or so, right now, and probably at least a few months down the road, I am partial to the PS3 because it is new to me, there are a lot of great games I have yet to play on it, and even more in genres that appeal to me coming out in the near future as opposed to the 360. No denying it, I am partial.
Netflix on PS3 can be of just as high quality as it is on 360, whether it winds up that way is yet to be seen. If it is I will make the switch. Sorry if waiting or speculating here (when prefaced by a question in context) seems “fanboyish” to you. I’m not perfect and will strive to improve with the constant feedback roca and you provide about my comments.
I’m pretty sure MS as a company is continuing to charge customers regardless as they are trying to market Gold as a “gateway” to all this stuff you can already get on the PC, but not on consoles (at least not all at once). They will probably try to coincide their 1080p instant on movies and Last.fm with the release of Netflix on PS3, but I don’t know. I can’t say what they “should” or shouldn’t do as a company, but they seem to have done alright so far in keeping customers.

im been trying to get on your good side (see I dont use the term M$ as it was bothering some) but the “feedback” you probably are talking about is that most of the time you make it seem that the PS3/PSN is not as good as the 360/XBL because you have expirience some issues with it so far. I truly believe you and I know i know it must be a pain to confront this issues but you dont seem to accept the fact that the 360/XBL is not perfect either, while a PSN update (no update is ever perfect) has given you issues, I have read stories about XBL updates bricking Consoles and activating the RRoD or e74 erros and even freezing “some games”. And even though you have not experience any of that on your 360, other ppl have but you seem to think that this issues only happen on the PS3/PSN.

I will be honest to you Happy..I dont have nothing agaisnt MS or the Xbox 360 library. In fact I prefer windows as my OS. I live the MS office applications. I like most of the 360 exclusive (except Halo and Mass Effect) and you will barely see me talking trash about other good games like Gears, Lost Odessey, DoA etc.
but I do hate the 360 hardware for being poorly done. and the Fact they they try to charge for free stuff is beyond me (not just for XBL but for DLC and other stuff)…….but other than that its all good with me…some of you just have Sony because its the competition which is pathetic. as gamers we should care more about the games and less about the makers (companies). if Alan Wake dont come out on the PC and it turns out to be a good game I will probably pick up a 360 around that time.
I argue agasint the Xbox because some of you seem to crusified Sony and the PS3 for lil stuff like:

I have nothing against Sony in terms of them being competition, it’s healthy for all concerned.
I do take issue with their PR and ridiculously snobbish outlook.
I have no problem with people complaining about poor Xbox hardware – if they have actually suffered it.

I feel completely fine bitching about 360 hardware history. I did suffer from it, even though I never owned one. All my friends stupid enough to buy one in the 33% RROD days were taken away from possibly playing games online with me over the PSN, and even from playing over XBL during the extended and repeated repairs/replacements. This harmed their, and my, enjoyment of gaming. They could have been much happier, and I could have been playing with more friends online, had they just bought the PS3 to begin with.

You might have missed the part here in the recent past where I said my old 360 was replaced because I had some issues with a “some games” freezing intermittently. It might have been hardware or firmware related, nearing its fourth year of service, but I decided to sell it and replace it regardless for a more recent model and I personally have not had problems with it since (this has been longer than I have owned my PS3 Slim). So no, I do not think anything is “perfect”.
As you see in many of my comments I use words like “limited experience”, “my own experience”, “my individual case”, etc. because I can only speak for myself. Speaking for myself only, I have had more issues with PS3 freezing in the limited amount of time I have owned it as compared to my 360 experience. I try to go more off of my own individual experience with something rather than “I have read stories…”.
If I thought PS3 or PSN or 360 or XBL was “perfect” I would mention that here and explain why, but I have not and do not. Instead I mention issues I have had recently and in the past, games I like or dislike, etc. Any individual comment is usually read within it’s own bubble by somebody who has an “issue” with it as being “fanboyish”, but really it is just me making a mention of it or what I am thinking/speculating.
At any given time I am going to like something about my PS3 better than my 360, and vice versa. I understand you “hate the 360 hardware” based off the impressions you were given from what you have read and maybe even your friends experience but not your own. I don’t blame you. I just have my own experience to go off of since launch day, and it hasn’t been nearly as bad as what the press is making it out to be, and I certainly don’t “hate” it. Could be a fluke or it may not be. No worries.

Again roca, I’m only going off of my own experience and tastes and probably off of a much cheaper TV (Sceptre 46″ 1080p, sceptre.com/Products/LCD/Specifications/spec_X46BV-FullHD.htm) than most people have here that I bought more than few moons ago which still works fine for my purposes.
In any case, the quality difference between Hulu and Netflix HD streaming (on my system and connection at least) is like the difference between VHS and DVD. Lumping Netflix HD streaming with Hulu when talking about visual quality by saying “net streaming” is like lumping VHS and BD together by saying “physical media”.
I definitely notice the difference between DVD and upgraded DVD/BD on my system, but not so much between BD and upgraded DVD. Again, I don’t know the hz on my tv, it may not even be 120hz, let alone 240hz, and the contrast ratio is only 8000:1, so I am probably not seeing the same difference you are on what is likely a superior, more expensive setup. Then again, it could just be my old man eyes.
Yes, visual quality does make a difference to me, at least that which I can distinguish readily (as the difference between Hulu and Netflix HD on my 360), but not enough to spend an extra grand past a certain point (pretty much the same reason I don’t do much high end pc gaming anymore).
I personally believe, for me at least, there is a point of diminishing returns (yes, still returns, but smaller) that I do not wish to spend exponentially more money on. Also for some reason in my case at least, Netflix HD through the 360 is of much higher quality than through the XPS laptop or piped through it to the TV with HDMI. Not sure if this has anything to do with the XBL servers or not, but I’m sure other people here have more knowledge than I do on the subject.

well, based on many hours of Forza Motorsports 3, i can safely say, this is the best looking, best playing, best simulation console driving game i have ever played…. and that goes all the way back to Pole Position in the arcades.
this includes GT5p….
i realize the moronic ps3 masses will swear GT5 will be better, but until it launches it’s just more empty promises from fanboys who’ve broken all the ones they made in the past..
the reviewers are right; FM3 set the bar that no other racing game has come close to touching…including any Gran Turismo game to date.

Well roca, I just got through explaining to you above (before this comment) how I do not have the system to have “the best quality/sound/frame rate as possible”, that you and others here probably have a superior system, and the difference between the two isn’t that great to me, nor do I care that much past a certain point.

Yes the difference between Hulu and Netflix HD is much more noticeable than the difference between BD and upgraded DVD/HD streaming on my setup. No I never “assumed” Netflix on PS3 wouldn’t have the same quality, I speculated that it might or might not.

Reviews do play a part in determining a good game versus a sucky game, but to say games that sell a ton because gamers love to play them aren’t “better” only underscores how subjective the term “better” really is. Gamers buy games based on great gameplay.
So far the 360 owners have found enough “better” about the games they are buying them at a very, very high attach ratio.

I never have. In fact I went on to recognize that “the PS3 can do many things the 360 can’t and vice versa in the recent past.” Yet for some reason you chose to ignore that, interesting. Each console has things the other does not, but really half of them don’t matter to me, whether it’s Avatars on 360 or Home on PS3.

Again we can only speak for ourselves and recognize that others will probably enjoy some features more than we do, which I have already done here. I have praised both consoles here for things the other does not have yet, but you choose to ignore this for some reason as well.
It seems that you are satisfied with nothing but fanboy praise of “TEH PS3 is PURRFECT! BUY 5 NOW!” variety. I won’t do this, because the PS3 (or the 360 for that matter) is far from perfect and has plenty of features I am forced to pay for (360 as well) that I won’t ever use. Get over it, because I am not going there with any console and everything I have said here is valid.

“plenty of features I am forced to pay for” if I want the console just to play games on (I chose to buy the console after all). Okay probably not so many, but here is an example: PS3 Wifi built in. 360… still trying to think of one. If I was a multiplayer gamer it would definitely be XBL Gold, but I’m not.

Gamers are individuals with different tastes and experiences. Opinions. “better” is subjective to each. “Wii Fit” does a “better” job of exercising your body than “Uncharted 2″ because it is a fitness title, not an adventure game. They are both “better” for certain individuals in their own way. Even if games fall into the same genre a gamer will find one game “better” than the other for a variety of reasons that may have nothing to do with how well it is reviewed.

IMHO, reviews can be a sign of how good a game is, but do not “determine a good game versus a sucky game”. Case in point, GT PSP for you is currently at the bottom end of the “generally favorable reviews” spectrum on Metacritic at 75. Some people may hate certain games on this level or think they are inferior to games in the same genre that happen to be at 85 or higher. This makes no difference to you roca because you enjoy the game you purchased as have many others who happened to drive GTPSP sales.
Of the three Nintendo titles you mentioned above, two received 75 or greater on Metacritic, while WiiPlay was bundled; though I have heard people say they enjoyed the bowling and other aspects of the title when it was initially released years ago.
Bottom line: it’s “subjective” roca, not a given or definite.

and thats the main point of that post, but its unfortunate that some people dont understand this..
They have already made preconceived notion, some games are superiors to others for everyone gaming..
