Week in gaming: Forza 3 physics fiasco, mini-Ballad of Gay Tony, and Eyetoy was Natal
This week in video gaming news there are new releases and new revelations about games out on the market. Forza 3 has a bit of a physics mishap and Ballad of Gay Tony shakes the GTA community. Also, there is an interesting video showing what Sony could have done with the Eyetoy if the company just had the foresight.
Forza 3 physics fiasco – Super PhysX excelsior!
A game that has been consuming a good amount of my time is Forza 3. The game is definitely top notch with a layer of polish in options and community features. I am currently playing Forza 3 like a mad man in order to write a review of it and it’s pretty darn good so far. The career mode will have you locked in at a steady pace gunning towards the next objective.
When it comes to physics, Turn 10 studio has been pretty bullish towards its latest creation Forza 3. The physics in the game are great and as it should be for a race sim. However, Forza 3 has been getting a bit of flack lately after a popular video popped up here in the U.S. and in Japan displaying questionable physics within the game.
It looks like a glitch of some sorts, but its still funny to watch in awe.
Mini-impression: Ballad of Gay Tony Rocks
BoGT is the latest iteration in the GTA IV universe. The latest downloadable expansion follows the journey of Jose Lopez a body guard and business partner to “Gay Tony.†I have to say this DLC blows The Lost and Damned out of the water with its over the top glitz, crime and sex. It seems like Rockstar just went all out on this one as it has everything in it from base jumping to oral sex. Check out this fantastic DLC exclusively on Xbox 360.
Nintendo DSi Camera –WTF?
Its bad enough that you look like a dufus carrying around a DSi, but the geniuses at Nyko take things one step further. According to Kotaku, Nyko recently released a giant lens that can be mounted onto the DSi’s miniature 0.3 megapixel camera. This gigantic lens will run you about $25 and will cement you as the ultimate geek.
PS2 Eyetoy could have been Natal “if it weren’t for those meddling Sony execs!â€
There is another video up on the Internet that has been causing some controversy. Someone from Warzonegamer put up an interesting video of a tech demo from the Playstation 2 era of the Eyetoy. The video is eerily similar to Natal’s block-out like demo at E3. I like the last part of the video near the end when the Microsoft rep says this can only be done on the Natal. You have to hand it to Microsoft, its not about how advanced the technology is, but how you market it.

Forza Motorsport 3 LoL, thanks for the clip it made my day. The DSi camera is hideous looking and embarrassing to own. Sony can still do that for PS2 to compete with the Wii you never know i hope it might just sell more PS2 faster. And The Ballad of Tony looks good, but i won’t be buying that anytime.

Ouch. But a tech demo through a laptop all the same and never actually on PS2, so we may never know for sure. Yes, Natal is just a more advanced copy of Eyetoy as Eyetoy is just a more advanced copy of computer vision. Of course, both could just be copies of computer vision (not that far fetched is it?) But the ricochet concept itself? I’m pretty sure that was a computer vision concept first as well.

Thanks Ivan. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was fake, as you said yourself the PS3 side was taking over YouTube in the “war” (I don’t follow this scene as closely, so I’ll take your word for it). Of course, then again, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was actual either.

I haven’t been able to get the car to stand on its nose like in the video, but Forza 3 does have a common problem of getting “turtled” upside down. Sometimes you have to rewind or wait until another car hits you. Also , sometimes the physics can get a bit wonky with epic crashes, like a car bulleting up into the sky.
However, in its defense, I have to say I’ve never seen a game without its share of glitches.

Lmao some realistic driving right there. I had that problem going to the shop last week, 7 cars honked me as I spun the car on it’s nose then finished with a back flip.

Pretty much all that needs to be said.
If it’s real (a big ‘if’ given the usual suspect Playstation fanboy PR’ing) it’s a rare one and very hard to emulate even by someone playing the game “like a mad man”.
I can’t see 200 comments when the basis of this (part of the) story is so thin.
Also Natal is much more than just motion capture.
Facial and voice recognition is a part of it too and I’ve not heard of anyone else’s camera kit doing that.

Well I downloaded Gay Tony last night and I let you guys know what I think over the weekend if I can get some time to play it. I think I’m also going to pick up Forza today. I think this game is awesome. I did not like the first two but this one has pulled me in.

PlayStation 3 sales up as losses widen at Sony
Sales of PlayStation 3 hardware have grown during the second quarter to 3.2 million, compared to 2.4 million in the previous year.
However, losses grew in Sony’s Network Products & Services Division – the group responsible for PlayStation products – to JPY 58.8 billion, from JPY 40.6 billion in 2008. Sales were down 24.2 per cent to JPY 352.6 billion.
“In the game business, the deterioration in profitability was mainly due to a decrease in PS2 hardware and software unit sales, and the impact of the appreciation of the yen,” said the company.
Sales of the handheld PlayStation Portable were down marginally from 3.2 million to 3 million, while PlayStation 2 sales fell from 2.5 million to 1.9 million.
Sony sold 23.9 million PlayStation 3 games during the period, up from the 21.2 million in 2008, while PSP sales were also up to 12.9 million, compared to 11.8 million.
Sales of PlayStation 2 software dropped drastically, from 23.2 million in 2008 to 11.1 million.
The entire Sony business posted a loss for the fourth consecutive quarter of JPY 32.6 billion from July to September, compared to a profit of JPY 11.05 billion in 2008.

Microsoft on Friday revealed flat year-on-year sales for its Entertainment and Devices Division, which houses Xbox, but operating income rose 96 percent to $312 million.
EDD revenue for the first fiscal quarter ended September 30 was $1.89 billion, virtually identical to a year ago. The EDD also includes the Zune media player, PC games, online games, and other products.
Microsoft attributed the sharp rise in profits to decreased operating expenses, primarily stemming from “decreased Xbox 360 platform costs.” A lower headcount in the division compared to a year ago also contributed to the higher profits.
Microsoft said that it shipped 2.1 million Xbox 360s during the quarter, down slightly from the year-ago quarter, when the company shipped 2.2 million hardware units.
The worldwide Xbox 360 installed base is “almost 34 million consoles,” Koefoed said, adding that it leads the industry with an 8.7 software title attach rate. Xbox Live revenue growth grew “in excess” of 50 percent, he said.

It’s funny reading the comments from the ps3 fanboys about Forza’s physics when GT5’s physics engine isn’t even powerful enough to make a car go airborne. Granted, a true racer will do everything they can to keep “4 on the floorâ€, but it strikes me silly that GT5 fanboys are mocking something their sim games aren’t powerful enough to accomplish. Sounds like sour grapes.
I could swear the ps3 fanboys said the ps3 was outselling the 360 in both Japan and the EU since launch and yet, it has failed to close any gap with the 360. Is North America that powerful of a market? Apparently so if the ps3 fanboys are to be believed. I guess ps3 fanboys shouldn’t be believed.
Either way, the sony fans have a lot of egg on their faces right about now…. I’d feel better with a sales number from sony than estimates from their fanbase. 27 million seems a little high for the ps3, imo…

No Demon’s Souls, console doesn’t exist.
Now, while a car spinning on its nose is an interesting glitch, how come no one is commenting on on the roll over that put the car into that position. If the physics were so realistic, how come a cars traction breaking point (when the tires lose the ability to maintain contact) is higher than the G-forces required to roll it?
Anything short of a 90s explorer or forklight will NOT roll over based on the centre of gravities tipping point occuring before tires break loose of the pavement, unless the tires hit a stationary object creating a fulcrum at the contact point, like sliding sideways into a 12″ curb. Rollovers do NOT occur from tire traction, but from interceding the momentum of the vehicle with a sub centre of gravity contact, with enough force to roll the centre of gravity past the tipping point.
Didn’t you claim to have forgotten more about physics than I have ever learned, Kev? Have you used “Excessive Speed” as the default accident report conclusion for so long that you forgot about these simple concepts? Nevermind, don’t answer, I really don’t care.
Never mind about FM3, I won’t waste money on a 360 for that type of arcade play.

Either your silence is proof that you are a liar and don’t understand your own “fizix”, or I am right, and you are too much of an egomaniac to admit that the 9000 physics calcs claims was PR bullshit, as well as Toyo tires involvement being nothing more than a sponsorship gig. If a real tire manufacturer was involved in the actual tire contact physics for the purpose of advancing simulation, the rollover that lead to the glitch would never have been possible.
This is sad. GT2 outclasses this. Why would I have to defend glitches in GT5? I don’t care about the car spinning on its nose, that is obviously not an intended effect. I was discussing the rollover that lead to the glitch. Bonafide proof of FM3′s Arcade limitations, and lack of realistic physics.
The only similar glitch I experienced in any GT game was GT1, if you bought a used 93 civic, maxed out weight reduction, put the best tires on it, and stiffened the suspension enough, the car would tip and ride on its sidewalls everytime you tried to make a turn.
That was GT1. They figured it out by GT2. I can honestly say I have no recollection of any other glitches in the GT series. There is a reason Kaz is touted as such a perfectionist. I am confident that I won’t have to defend any glitches in GT5, but that is moot anyway, as the point of my post was the physics, not the glitches.
This is a brand new Arcade Racer in 2009, exhibiting a physics error that was corrected in the GT series over a decade ago.
Amateur, and officially off my list as a possible reason to buy a 360.

Surely you know all about how a huge range of the cars behaviour in Forza 3 can be turned off, down or up?
You can indeed use the game like an Arcade game – if that is what rocks your world or how you prefer to get into a racing game – you can also make the necessary changes to use it as an accurate sim.
The choice is yours.

As I said repeatedly to whatshisface, the glitch doesn’t bother me, the ability to roll a car entirely on it’s tire contact patch is what bothers me. I’ll admit, I got on that little diatribe without consideration for the realism settings that were being used in the making of the video, but the fact that the game includes in its mechanics (regardless of realism settings) this type of oldschool, low tech physics response, means that time has been spent on developing the title outside of simulation parameters.
If I was to buy FM3 for simulation purposes, I wouldn’t get a discount for never using silly arcade settings. I’ll stick to a game that from the beginning 12+ years ago, was motivated by achieving as close to perfection as is possible within a console racing simulation. I know I won’t have to make excuses for it, that there is no risk on my end of not getting my money’s worth.
If another game motivates me to buy a 360, then I might get this title, as I did have fun with the limited time I spent with the demo. But as a reason for me to spend money on another console, it has failed. That might change with an amazing experience with the full game, but I doubt it.

Agree Microsoft needs a lot more developers they barely got any and the one they own are really pathetic. Also the one that actually was making decent games they left go. Also they should just buy EPIC GAMES so they can at least own the Gears of War IP because one that contract is over. I highly doubt EPIC GAMES is gonna leave that IP on Xbox 360 is all BUSINESS unless Microsoft pays them a little check to keep for a bit more like a whore.
Also if you don’t buy anymore Rockstar Games you will be missing on AGENT and we all know Rockstar Games got talented visionary employees. I enjoy all their games well some more then other.
I also agree with you Microsoft has no confidence in them it shows.
Microsoft has enough money to buy timed exclusives and DLC that ends on PS3 anyways. It would be better for them to just buy IP or new studios or just try to make new IP themselves like Sony has been doing since PS1. If you ever want to see major confidence look no further then Sony. And I’m not just saying that they have proven to succeed at what they do.

1- one of my friends had replace 2 elites already, my other friend went through 5 360s until finally decided not to bother any more any stay with his launch PS3. and recently another friend (who hardly play any games just Fifa, PES and L4D) got the RRoD on his out of warranty system (then traded all his 360 games for Fifa 2010 and more PS3 games) is not my problem if you think the 360 is the best built console ever

3- I never said I experienced a Glitch while playing the forza demo…it was just the Forza physics that makes cars bounce and jump (Jofa surly noticed the same)

my first console was a Atari 2600, since then I have had, Sega Genesis, Sega Saturn, Dreamcast, NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Gameboy, Gameboy advance, DS, DS lite, Game Gear, etc. I also manage to get a hold of a Apple(namco) Pipin for a while (it was a failure though, hard to find games for it)
as you can see I play almost every game from every genre. and I have a huge collection of games/console. I have about 50 PS3 game and 25 PSN games. I play alot of RPG on my DS lite and PSP. I still go back and play Chrono Trigger on the SNES and Mystical Ninja Goemon on the N64 (great game btw but rare as shit)

HH, CarlB and Harry (sorry of missed anyone, I just skimmed through these gems … lol) Cheers, good to be back. Yes I’m still in remote NT Harry. My lappy HD died and needed to be sent off for warranty. But I’m back baby !!!! YEAH. Cairns is a nice spot, had family there.
I’m not entering this Sh%&fight, not car racing fan I’m afraid. I am currently enjoying Uncharted 2 and Op Flashpoint 2. Played and finished KZ2. It is at times frustrating and very short, but looks very pretty. Oh and I got a PS3 slim (so the missus could keep the 60gig ps3 in the loungeroom as the blu-ray player and I could take the slim to the NT)
I did honestly consider the similar priced xbox elite pack (and yes, I did honestly SERIOUSLY consider it) But 2 things and two things only swayed me. 1. Blu-ray 2. AT THIS TIME, better outlook on games I currently like.
This is just a personal take on the recent decision I made and is NOT a hack on 360. I was a bees dick away from getting the elite.
Anyways, happy gaming everyone. Talk soon on another thread dudes
