Milking continues with Lego Rock Band
I hate seeing a genre of game milked until its teats shrivel up and die. And that’s exactly what is happening to the guitar/band-based rhythm-action games right now. DJ Hero is bad enough but at least that takes the genre in a new direction (away from rock music and into the world of Hip-Hop and R’n'B). The new Lego Rock Band just gives us more of the same.
Sure, there is is Lego element, which has been used to great effect in games such as Lego Batman and Lego Star Wars. But it feels to be an add-on in this game rather than the basis which the game is built around as with those already mentioned. What we’re left with is essentially Rock Band with Lego interpretations of famous musicians rather than cartoon approximations of famous musicians.
This can be seen perfectly in the video below, which shows a Lego version of Blur performing Song 2:
There is also Band Hero on the horizon but that is at least a new franchise altogether. Lego Rock Band is the milkiest example of a milked franchise I have seen for a while. And it’s a shame because the set list for the game looks quite varied and interesting.
Maybe it’s just me that’s starting to get bothered by this but I fear the Guitar Hero/Rock Band games are going to become so saturated that they’ll lose their appeal. And that would be a real shame because there’s no doubting how intoxicating they can be to play, especially when a group of friends and a few drinks are involved.

I want Frequency and Amplitude as remakes for PLAYSTATION 3. With new added features and songs plus mode and more online options. And no peripherals.
