PS3 sales up but Sony still makes a loss
Things are finally looking up for Sony in terms of shifting consoles, with sales of the PS3 up massively in Q2, 2009. However, the company’s gaming division has still made a huge loss, which definitely takes the positive edge off the unit sales somewhat. The key now is for Sony to turn the improved sales into profits, if that’s actually possible.
According to PS3center, in its financial report covering Q2, 2009, Sony announced it has sold 3.2 million PS3s in that period. If this figure is to be believed, the PS3 outsold the Xbox 360 worldwide (2.1 million) over the last three months, and even nearly outsold the Wii (3.5 million) as well. There’s a definite feeling that the PS3 is finally starting to come into its own while the Xbox 360 is holding steady and the Wii is dropping back from its previous highpoint.
Unfortunately, the increase in hardware sales didn’t help Sony’s gaming division turn a profit, with losses totaling $654 million instead. The release of the PS3 Slim should help this figure close in on break-even point in the next quarter and beyond due to lower production costs associated with the new model.

Is all happy banking day for Sony corp. starting next year oh yeah. Also with the games coming out next year, they will be making those green paper like clock work. The PS3 is selling very good and they got hot exclusives every month plus they cut the PS3 manufacturing cost by %70. They needed to lose to gain their real goal. And damn 2.1 million nice kudos to them closing the gap really fast. Everyone is loving the PLAYSTATION 3. And the PSP Go is getting at lot of love too. Finally things are looking very well for Sony.
Now i need to makes this my dream come true is Resistance 3, Killzone 2 and a proper SOCOM sequel on the PS3 by Zipper Interactive or all PS2 games remastered with online.

Whatever happened to Sony posting total PS3 sold numbers?
They used to on their results (maybe it was the annuals and not the quarterlys)?
Last I saw it was 27 million PS3s verses ‘almost’ 34 million Xbox.
No movement relative to each other at all.
Of course I expect some shift in that with the PS3 slim spurt.
But it is also true that Xbox have some cracking deals on right now too.
Amazon UK for instance are selling Jasper 120gb Elites with entertainment game pack & choice of 2 games which include Forza 3, Fifa 10, Halo ODST, and Borderland for £199.99 ($330 US = $360 AUS).

well I hope they keep loosing more money because I would love to see sony fall. They deserve it for their arrogance. That’s what happens when a electronic company tries to use it’s gamer base to win a format war. Already the 360 as taken this year once again because if your games don’t sell it doesn’t mean shit. Halo ODST, Forza 3, Modern warfare 2, Left 4 Dead 2, GTA 4 stories from liberty city and just about any high profile game will sell more on the 360 so that is a wrap. With Natal launching next year that means 2010 is also in the bag along with all the big games. That what happens when your system user base is split between Gamers and those who just bought it for a bluray player because it was the cheapest bluray player on the market for a while. Also what happened to all those games coming out in 2009, oh they got pushed back to 2010. Sounds like the first 3 years all over again. I wonder how many scheluled for 2010 will get pushed back to 2011. LOL I mean GT was suppose to be released last Christmas. LOL LOL

I doubt the 654 million has much to do with losing money on selling PS3s. It’s probably just the overhead cost of all those studios.

Sure. It’s a fairly simple concept: Like and talk about individual games and gaming experiences instead of brands. The same rule applies to features and services. Avoid fanboy superiority or list wars.
Nobody is perfect (I’ve had more than my fair shair of temporary measured idiocy in the past), and some people here do the exact opposite of the concept mentioned above just to have fun, but if you want, or claim to be “non-biased” (as some have here recently) or to not be a fanboy, the above is a good starting direction.
Personally, I am “biased” to the PS3 right now and Demon’s Souls for gaming. I have been “biased” towards PS3 since the end of September when I purchased it for the first time. The PS3 had some great exclusive games that I had not played, and I wanted to play them. That was part of my purchasing decision: it had enough well reviewed exclusive games out or coming out to justify the purchase for me, the price drop to $299, and trophies finally standard this year.
I was expecting more of a difference with the built in BD player, but my 46″ 1080p TV doesn’t seem up to snuff by today’s top standards (it has only 8000:1 contrast and I don’t even know the Hz on it… lol), though it is good enough for my general purposes and I still notice some marginal quality differences from different sources. Right now Netflix HD streaming and BD are about on par on my set, though both seem to have much better quality than upgraded DVD.

Yes, Sony is losing money. However, a lot of people are starting to pay attention to the Ps3 for various reasons. Many Xbox users are converting to Ps3 because they are tired of the system failing. Also, people are seriously starting to take notice of ps3’s exclusive titles. There is not much difference in multi-platform games any more.

As much as I’m a fanboy I don’t just go around bashing Sony for no reason. There is a difference between mine and your approach towards each others console. In fact I said the exact opposite by stating I have been “biased” towards the PS3 since the end of September because of the exclusive games on it (not to mention probably till the end of 1st quarter next year)… ooh… I am a “fanboy” of PS3 right now
Really. People. Look at in context. I have been gaming on the 360 for almost the last four years now. I just got the PS3 when the Slim released towards the end of September, which means I have years less experience with it than some here.
I can only go off of my own experience and opinions so far, speaking only for myself, and to date I’ve mentioned the exclusive games I like on it (Infamous, Uncharted 1 and 2, Demon’s Souls) and the game I haven’t liked on it so far (MGS4… meh).
I’ve mentioned what I like about the console so far (trophy system, PSOne game BC, BD) as well as what I don’t like (firmware updates freezing issues, no PS2 BC, Home, browser, etc.). I’ve done the same with 360 dislikes (RRoD after almost four years of gaming, HDD cost and proprietary, XBL Gold charges for multiplayer, etc.), likes (More than a few multiplat games look better on it, more well reviewed games, achievements, NetflixHD, etc.), exclusive games I like (Fable 2, Mass Effect, Lost Odyssey, Dead Rising, Crackdown, etc.), and dislike (Perfect Dark Zero, Kameo… blegh).
The bottom line here is we should be able to criticize things we dislike and praise things we like about our own console(s) openly. If we own both or more then we should be able to do this separately in a reasonable manner at different times as well without being called a “fanboy”. Simple it lets you know what controller number you got also it looks extremely cool really nice green lights. Also i haven’t had any more major issue with my Xbox 360 Arcade model just that sometimes playing GTA IV it freezes. But we have to wait for next year to see it the problems are all fixed after the million consoles.
Not all issue need the flashing lights.
I doubt Microsoft had any bad intentions when they created the Xbox 360 with those color lights, it was most likely to help them figure out any problem easier. They just suck at making hardware and gaming software.
If you a new gamer and want to have a good experience buy a PS3. Because Xbox 360 would make you hate video games after all the problem you encounter and bad service.

There were basically 4 things that are major causes of the rrod. They are
1) Heat (chips produce heat)(Large chips produce more heat)
2) Heat removal (Bad heatsink design in oldermodels does not get rid of enough)
3) Motherboard uneven standoffs (difference of 1mm in some of the standoffs mean board flex when overheated)
4) Lead free solder (Cracks when heated and flexed, unlike leaded solder)
MS solved 2 major problems with the Jasper chip.
They fixed the first 2 on the list above.
The jasper chips are smaller so they produce less heat, they also have new heatsinks that help get rid of the heat that is produced.
So one would have to assume that your chances are much lower than before, but since they still use lead-free solder and haven’t changed the way the Motherboard is attached to the case. 2 out of 4 means 50%

Thank you and apology accepted roca. I think it can be fairly easy for misinterpretation to happen through writing, and I apologize if I misinterpreted you as judging the game based off of one review. I just look at things perhaps from a different point of view.
To me personally, it seemed odd that Gamespot was the only one that gave it a higher score, and the difference between 8.5 and 9.0 on the site is the difference between great and superb. Naturally, if one had both consoles, one would want to play the higher scored version (superb), but then again, framerate might mean more to them than some subdued colors. The difference on Metacritic is the difference between “universal acclaim” and “generally favorable”.

When did I mention these? Well, since you brought it up we’ll go there…
Right now Metacritic has aggregated the difference to be 88 (360 version) and 89 (PS3 version). Not that great admittedly, but still better (if the diff was 89 and 90 for instance it would move into “universal acclaim”), and still based off of only one review. So far 360 games have usually had the lead in multiplat games after reviews have been aggregated, like (sticking with “universal acclaim” scores only here):
BioShock 96 on 360, 94 on PS3

For this range in PS3’s favor:
SF IV 93 on 360, 94 on PS3
My point being, if Dragon Age moves up into “universal acclaim” or not, it seems to be the first non-fighting game that has scored higher on PS3 when compared to 360 that is closest to the upper range in review scores.
More than a few games have done this same thing this year in the 80-90 range, so maybe if the trend continues, the 360 will have lost what used to be one of it’s real advantages: having the superior version of the game (even if only slightly so), and the one that owners of both consoles will naturally gravitate towards to play and or purchase (if they don’t have a proper gaming pc that is… you’re welcome SW).

on metacritic a point or two doesnt necesseraly means one version is better than another..you have to take into account that there are Exlusive PS3/360 websites and Magazines reviewing those games too. which mean you can get a point or two difference between the 2 versions.
Also, Bioware is known for having frame-rate issues with most of their games.

I agree… and I did. This is why the focus should remain with non-exclusive site and magazine reviews, but only if they back each other up.
1 point mainly influenced by one review out of so many isn’t a huge deal on Metacritic, though if many only look at the “score” of both (if they own both consoles) and put that ahead of what is actually said in the reviews, it would probably be enough to influence their decision.
7 points after aggregation as in the case of The Orange Box… well, that’s definitely enough of a difference and one that would come from more than just exclusive sites and magazines and would likely drive customers who own both consoles to the higher scored version every time.

OB is the worst port from 360/PC to PS3. lol
but also I believe you are aware that MOST of the games from Bioware had suffer from frame rate issues. Bioware is known for that.

Oblivion is better on the PS3 but the score doesnt reflic that. (and it even came with the first expansion included)
