Dragon Age: Origins superior on PS3 than Xbox 360 – Bayonetta in reverse?
Dragon Age: Origins is Bioware’s next big title for this year before Mass Effect 2 hits in 2010. The reviews for the game have started pouring in and there is an odd difference between the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions. The PS3 version of Dragon Age: Origins is apparently superior to the Xbox 360 version.
Just two days ago I talked about Bayonetta and how the Xbox 360 version was slightly superior to the PS3 version of the game. It seems like this is irony week as the exact opposite has occurred with Dragon Age: Origins where the PS3 version is slightly superior.
Gamespot gave the PS3 version of Dragon Age: Origins a 9.0 and the Xbox 360 version a 8.5 in the reviews. Apparently the difference in score is attributed to an overall graphical/presentation disparity in the game.
In a story regarding mod support, I reported that Bioware recently announced that the PS3 version will release Nov. 3 on the same day as the Xbox 360 and PC versions and is no longer delayed. The part that has me scratching my head is if Bioware was such a competent PS3 developer why in the world did they initially delay the release of the game for the PS3?
I’m sure Bioware will go on record as to why there is a graphical difference between the games and will give their labored excuse. We know its not the same situation as Bayonetta in that it was developed by the same developer and both versions are not ports of each other. However, gamers should not get so hung up on these minor differences as I have mentioned before folks – 8.5 or 9.0 its only a 0.5 difference and both scores are pretty good in my book and the difference is fairly minor.

Same thing happened with Fallout 3 last year. Both versions were made by Bethedsa and Gamespot gave the 360 version 9.0 and the PS3 version 8.5. Interesting footnote to that was that Oblivion looked better on PS3. A footnote to this footnote was that I read somewhere a couple of years ago that the 360 version was meant to get a patch to put it up to scratch with the PS3 version, in a similar way that Ghostbusters was patched/is patched for PS3. I traded my copy in a while ago, so I am not sure if this actually happened or not.
Both systems have different architecture and it is probably a challenge to get identical versions, so there are going to be occasions where one system’s game would look better than the other system’s.

IGN review “While I’d love to say that Dragon Age looks phenomenal, that isn’t accurate on the PS3 and Xbox 360. The graphics aren’t as crisp as they are on the PC, and character models can be rather hit or miss. General character animations can be a bit stiff, but the battle animations are pretty solid. There is a lot of screen tearing, and I wish that you could maneuver the camera perspective out of its locked position. While I can understand that a locked camera helps keep the focus on the battle and action, it would be useful to get a larger glimpse of the battlefield. Additionally, there are a number of framerate hitches, more so on the PS3 than the 360. It doesn’t break gameplay, but with a game that runs for sixty to eighty hours, that starts to add up over time.”

Gamespot review (XBox 360 version) “Textures are highly compressed and colors are washed out, though the upside is that this version maintains a smoother frame rate than on the PlayStation 3, where things might get jittery when swiveling the camera around. The PlayStation 3 version features higher-quality textures than those on the Xbox 360, better color saturation, smoother facial animations, and shorter load times. Minor visual hiccups, like corpses that disappear and reappear, are a bit more common on the PS3, however.”

So it looks like IGN is actually saying the PS3 is slightly inferior because of framerate, whereas Giant Bomb and 1UP gave the exact same review score for each version. Gamespot is the only one that differs in score on Metacritic, and there are several more reviews for the PS3 version than the 360 version so far. What it winds up so far is 89 for the PS3 version (the same score as Demon’s Souls has so far), and 88 for the 360 version, with the main difference being only Gamespot’s review scores.

11 minutes to install on 360… 6.4 GB install (slightly smaller than FableII). Hmph. 4 “secret achievements” showing on xbox360achievements.org and 4 difficulty levels… what a coincidence.
The “washed out colors” occur when adjusting the brightness higher… no doubt about it, but if you keep it at the default, these are not nearly as noticeable. At this time, I think I will return Demon’s Souls to GameFly (as I own it now) and order the PS3 version as well, just to see if there is any real noticeable difference for myself. The 360 version already has some framerate stutter, so if the PS3 version is even worse, it may be highly subjective as to which you would prefer: higher stutter, or better textures and facial animations.

4 hours tonight and 2 achievements later… yes, it’s gameplay is addictively appealing, though not quite so much as the original Baldur’s Gate on PC (and no… 6 CD ROM discs for BG did not detract from the gameplay, sorry). The visuals are superior to Demon’s Souls and Fable 2 (thought that isn’t really saying a whole lot), and the pacing is outstanding, without the endless death frustration (though addictive, nonetheless) of the former or the simplicity (yet constantly fun and changing quest form) of the latter. Regardless of which platform you play it on, it is a treat to be savored.

Try reading them instead of just going off of (seeing) one out of 15+ “scores”. For instance, the one previously mentioned above that gave the 360 version a “(slightly) superior” advantage within the review itself. Let alone the actual review you refer to which also gives the 360 an advantage in framerate and less pop-up.
“dont argue with me go to GS and let them know to” upgrade the processor in the PS3 so it can handle the framerate properly. Or you can always blame it on the programmers… AGAIN.
The bottom line here is it is subjective, and neither version is clearly superior until you see it for yourself. I haven’t seen both versions yet (though it seems I have seen at least one more than you), so I will suspend judgment until I have.

When I first heard about this game I didn’t think it would be on PS3…I figured they would just put it on PC and X-box and if it sold well then maybe Sony would get it a year or two later kinda like how they did with Oblivion. So I think it’s very cool of Bioware to have made this for PS3 also. And then stepping up to have it released at the same time as the others is just awesome. Having said that Bioware really screwed over there PC fan base by promising to release this game for PC before they even started on the console version. I really hope this game kicks-ass and is worth the wait?

Dragon Age is supposed to be like FF XII’s battle system. Which is ok, but after playing through Demon’s Souls, I’m not sure I can go back to a more passive battle system. That I and I still remember KOTOR 2 being total shit (but every one loved it).
I may pick this up down the road at some point, but it’s not on my list at the moment.

Yeah 5-1 isn’t a great level or boss. 5-2 is kind of meh also, but the poison, swamp, and black phantom make it tricky.

World 5-1 is bullshit, but easy if you take your time, and the final boss is a joke if you stand where the Archstone appears, aim for above his wormy pants that he grows to regen, and just shoot arrows, I havent done it any other way, hah.
When dropping into the swamp area in 5-2, you can take the swamp on the left (BP) islands in the middle, or swamp on the right. I ignore the loot by now, so I just take the swamp on the right, running against the wood wall until i get to the foggy door… getting past the big club weilder by walking with Thiefs Ring.
The big club dudes drop Ephemeral stones, btw.

Funny how roca carefully chooses only one out of what is now 19 reviews for 360 and only twelve reviews for the pS3 version, the only one that actually gives it a higher score, and then chooses to ignore the actual advantages the 360 version has is smoother frame rate and less pop-up. All in order to claim the PS3 version “superior”. Amazing. Personally, my judgment is still reserved until the alternate version comes in.
Regardless, I will be labeled “a double agent” if I say the PS3 version is superior IMO, or “a 360 fan boy” if I say the 360 version is superior IMO. Lol.

You do remember what ellipses are, right? Regardless of whether you said it was because you like the “Japanese Artistic tradition that inspired the look of the game” you did prefer that look for a game that you played. I’m sure there are a least a few Japanese Artists that worked on the team, or at the very least who have the same leanings as you when it comes to the “Japanese Artistic tradition” and it reflects in their work.
All I’m asking is for you to suspend your judgment until you have at least a little bit more actual experience with the game, or at the very least, more than one out of 19 reviews.

Okami has a unique artistic design and I just happen to prefer the original colors for the game. i didnt know that was an issue here?

I agree and I understand your take. There was no issue, it just seemed reasonable that you suspend judgment until you actually played the game versions or there was more than one out of several reviews giving it the same slight advantage.

my judged was based on the this article CarlB. I never said I play Dragon Age. and If I do, I most likely wont be looking for any issues (thats what reviewers do)..if they come as I go through the game then fine..but I wont be looking for that.
