Gearbox boss calls Valve fanboys against the PS3
In a recent interview with the president of Gearbox, he called the guys at Valve fanboys for making negative comments towards the PS3. Other folks and developers have even taken notice of Valve’s amateurish actions. Will Valve apologize to the PS3 community or will it continue to act like fanboys?
According to Analog Hype [via Kotaku], Randy Pitchford president of Gearbox, made some comments regarding Valve’s odd stance against the PS3. As many of you may know, Gearbox is the studio behind the awesome game Borderlands.
In the latest issue of the Official Playstation Magazine, Pitchford indicated that Valve’s behavior towards the PS3 is similar to that of fanboys.
Pitchford stated:
Doug Lombardi [Valve] had to take a swipe at the PS3 again, and I thought it was foolish, …I read it the same way I read fanboys, … Like there’s a guy who bought the Sony platform and he’s a Sony guy, so he decides he’s going to spend a certain percentage of his time bashing Microsoft. And there’s a guy on Microsoft doing the same thing. Those guys are childish and narrow minded; It’s the same kind of thing.
Yesterday, I put up a story around comments made by Chet Faliszek, project lead for Left 4 Dead. I suspect Pitchford will probably have something to say about Faliszek’s comments as well.
Pitchford seems a bit irritated about the way Valve handled the PS3 port of The Orange Box as well. He delved into a very insightful rant about Valve’s “sleazy” practice with Steam.
Pitchford said:
I’m actually kind of mad at Doug because with the Orange Box, he said the 360 and PC versions are the good ones and the PS3 version is like the stepchild because some other developer made it. Well you Valve don’t really think that, because look what you’ve done on the PC side. You’ve supported that, you’ve added all this content to Team Fortress 2, and you’ve left us hanging. It’s hard to accept that genuinely, because I know the business, I know you guys make half the money on the PS3 version because you’ve got other fingers in the pie, and other developers getting a cut. It benefits you if nobody buys that, and only buys the PC version, because you make the most money. There’s this underlying sleaziness.
I think Pitchford has a very valid point there. Some other stories have been popping up recently around Steam and how Valve manipulates the market to make its service successful. Can a third party game developer also be in charge of a service like Steam, without crossing the lines?

I dont think they are pointing out the maturity of the psn community, but the online component and features, my friends who have have both 360 and ps3 told me, that most people dont use mike etc on psn (atleast not till now) but i am sure mikes will be standard with MAG.. I also read valve interview long time back where they stated something like, they have no probs with ps3, but the sony mgmt who makes weird architectural design

And i suppose taking jabs at the competion isn’t something new in this industry, u ll see many dev claiming that kz2 or uc 2 or heavy rain cant be developed on 360, irrespective of the fact that most of them are sony’s 1st party developers, and the games are anyway exclusive to sony’s console.. So it doesn’t make any sense stating that the game can’t be developed on a 360..

While Valve might not have “themselves” made the port for PS3…they sure as hell get some of the money from any profits in generates. And you would think a company who put’s that much love and time in making the Orange Box would want to see the best end result product possible on any console it comes out on? I mean when people see the game orange box (half-life) they automatically think of VALVE. It just goes to show they are perfectly happy signing off on a shitty half assed made copy.

The Orange was a port of a game that came out in 2004. I played Half Life 2 on the original Xbox. Sure it was great, but the game is 5 years old now.
The Left 4 Dead Series is built on that same last gen engine.
Valve is a one trick pony. They will continue using the same game engine for the rest of this gen. It’s quick, cheap, and convenient. Porting it to PS3 would mean that they would have to do some extra work.
Does Gabe look like the kind of ambitious person who likes doing work? No. He’s lazy.

All real gamers should hate Valve. They hurt ALL of us by riding on former successes, soaking money out of the market without contributing to it’s progress. Most every non-first party studio spends time and effort (money) on progressing the use of new hardware, be it consoles, GPUs, CPUs, w/e. Any dev who refuses to do this, lowers the overal quality available to gamers, as well as lowering the overall investment in the future of gaming.

online problem with MW2 doesnt have anything to do with PSN or XBL. the stupid way the CoD online service is set up is retarded. if you like getting kicked out of a game just because the host leave, then go ahead and have a blast with it.. I personally hate that shit, specially when you are playing with a bunch of friends.
