Microsoft bans 1 million gamers on Xbox 360
Microsoft recently dropped the ban hammer on nearly 1 million Xbox 360 owners. The ban comes down on owners who may have modified their Xbox 360 or played pirated games on the system. This is one of the biggest crackdowns on video game piracy in recent memory.
It seems Microsoft may have dropped a massive ban hammer on its user base as copies of the popular game started popping up on bit torrent and warez sites for the Xbox 360. According to Information Week, around 1 million XBL users were banned from the service, which is approximately 5 percent of the total userbase.
There has been reports of a small percentage of users getting banned, but never has Microsoft implemented it on such a large scale. Apparently there are some bitter gamers out there complaining about the ban, admitting to paying around $100 to get the consoles modded by an electronic store. Unfortunately, with every fix the crafty hackers have been able to circumvent and figure out a way around detection on XBL.

I don’t know if I agree with the intercooler bit, if it’s there to reduce heat then maybe that’s a bit harsh. But for the other stuff, that’s their own stupid fault. And Future Of Sega is right, anyone trying to sell these consoles (to the unsuspecting) should be punished. If someone knows they are buying a modded console that’s been banned then that’s up to them.

Dang… about 1/30 xbox owners being banned (less, not everyone has Live)? Good. Very good. For stealing games, anyways. Banning somebody for putting an intercooler or flame sticker on their 360 is bollocks… but I like to see people getting busted. Probably ’cause I’m a law abiding citizen. I can understand where Microsoft is coming from, some folks have been known to put the intercooler on backwards causing the unit to heat up even more. Its the third party harddrives that I don’t agree with.

I had a similar point re the third party data cards in a topic here a few weeks ago. I think disabling the hard drives in a similar fashion to what they did with the data cards would have been a better option rather than banning the Xbox live account.

Harry : People like Ivan can’t see past the end of their nose. They have no idea that the whole industry is affected by piracy. Sure games cost a lot and that is as much due to the escalating dev costs that the new consoles (especially the ps3 Ivan) require for each game.
But you are not going to spend 30-40 million dollars on a game dev if you are just gonna have little oiks like Ivan steal it. So in the end its the rest of us that pay for it while low life plastic gangstas who claim they are a “gamer 4 liFe” (WTF?) get it for free and don’t have any remorse about what they are doing.
I would like to say I hope sony suffer the same fate as MS are doing and all the 360 fans start copying all the ps3 games. But to be honest, despite the fact I don’t like sony, I wouldn’t want that to happen to any game company, as I believe that they are all out there to try and bring a little joy to our lives through gaming.
I know I will get stick for saying this as I am a Nintendo fan in the middle of a 360 vs ps3 battle ground, but I am a gamer for life. (note the NON Brooklyn special school spelling)

How exactly is MS supposed to know if you have an intercooler or modded your case in any way? What a load of scaremongering bollocks. The only thing they can detect is if there is any modification that affect the digital realm, such as software hacks, modded chips or possibly even a different HDD (providing it registers with the system as being non standard)
Sucks for homebrew users and people that simply want to expand the functionality of the system, but I guess that is the only way they can stop the hackers.

I guess some people have different views for this. Games make profit almost instantly like movie do even with all the piracy. Developers just want every penny which they have full rights to want that. But most people just don’t care piracy doesn’t really harm everyone, that’s just what they want you to think. Look at Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 huge sales already made Activision more then enough profit to fund a couple new Call Of Duty crappy sequels or useless new IP. Piracy hurts only when the product is crap because no one is buying it so they can just get it free.

Everybody knows that the DS is easy to pirate because of the R4. Some people I know say nonsense like “there aren´t any hardcore games for DS”. Out of the nowhere Chrono Trigger , FF4 DS and GTA come out. They got them all… in their R4! Those games got poor sales (which inhibits the possibility of more games like that in the future). If more hardcore gamers acted like them, no wonder why. And then that same people wonder why do casual games overflow the platform. Perhaps it got something to do with casual gamers actually buying their selected games.
I understant that crap games must not be rewarded but I also believe that good games should not be punished. Piracy sometimes punish both.

What is the intercooler powered by? Any modern device with an internal processor made in the past 10 years is capable of monitoring its own power usage. Devices can have power profiles across the different voltages, and total wattage usage monitoring. If the intercooler is powered off the 360 itself (as opposed to an external wall plug just for itself), then the 360 is perfectly capable of seeing the device, and diagnosing its operation. I am not claiming to know that the 360 actually does this, but it is not some crazy possibility, it is very simple, dated technology that would allow this function.

Ivan, I think you will find that games developers need to sell a significant amount to make money. The majority of PS3 exclusive games are struggling to break even for example. The developer is lucky to make $20 out of each game sale. I suspect Uncharted 2, for example, would have to sell 1 million to start making a profit. And Killzone 2 would need to shift over 3 million to clear the rumoured 60million development costs.
That is one reason why more and more developers are going multiplat. It just doesn’t make financial sense to only develop for one single platform.

Ivan, I am well aware of Uncharted 2 selling 1.5million according to Vgchartz. I was simply pointing out the figure at which they would be making a profit. Gears of War 2 for example needs to sell 600k to break even.
KZ2 had already passed the Euro 20million mark at E3 back in 2007. Considering how it took another 2 years after that to come out it is no surprise if the insider reports of costs hitting Euro 42 million are pretty true. Unfortunately the truth is safely buried by Sony.
