October NPD sales figures – Wii back on top, Uncharted 2 on PS3 sells well
NPD has released the U.S. sales figures for October. The recession continued to hit the video games sector, with sales down 19 percent over last year. September sales went against the grain, and it’s hoped that November will too thanks to the release of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare 2. But October wasn’t a good month overall.

Nintendo Wii – 506,900
Nintendo DS – 457,600
Sony PS3 – 320,600
Microsoft Xbox 360 – 249,700
Sony PSP – 174,600
Sony PS2 – 117,800
The Nintendo Wii managed to wrestle the top spot back from the PS3, so the Sony console only managed to stay there for one month. It means that everything is back to normal, with Nintendo taking the top two spots. The PS3 didn’t do badly however, managing to beat the Xbox 360 by over 70,000 units.

FIFA Soccer 10 – Xbox 360 – 156,000
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves took top spot in the software chart, with 537,000 units being enough to see off Wii Fit Plus. Borderlands on the Xbox 360 took the number three slot but the PS3 version didn’t even make the top ten. Halo 3: ODST saw a massive drop-off in the course of a month, from 1.52 million in September to just 271,000 in October.

Wow wasn’t expecting this. It was my understanding that the wii had been selling poor and ps3 was still on top since the price cut. Didn’t last long for the ps3.

I guess the PS3 sales went down quite a bit, but I was expecting that… I mean, of course there would be a huge burst of sales. People have been waiting for the PS3 to go down to a reasonable price for years, and they added the whole “slim” thing along. But hey, it still sold good, and I’m sure that if it can do this in North America, they must be selling like crazy when it comes to worldwide.
One thing I need to ask, why can’t I ever find monthly worldwide sales? And apparently NDP is only figures in the US, why does Canada always get left out? =-( …I mean, we invent basketball, iMax, and some.. other… things… but nobody pays attention…

Relax man I was just messing around with you 360 guys. I know all to well that just because a game does or does not sell really don’t mean a whole lot of squat. There’s a lot of kick-butt games out there that unfortunately never sold to well. But I think it will be a pretty safe bet to say that when GT5 comes out it will do damn well in sells.

I will go on a limb here but GodofWar3, GT5, and Mag, will more than likely blow the rest of those games out of the water on sells? Even tho X-box has more users. But you are right it will be interesting to see and compare. We really do have some great titles coming out next year for both consoles. And we gamers are going to have good year.

Aw, I’m simply enjoying the fact that a quality game in a rather new franchise actually outsold the almighty Nintendo, king of fads. That’s a plus for all of us. If gamers recognize that they should be buying quality games (I own both Wii Fit *not my idea* and Wii Sports, I’m not wasting money on the sequels, and I own Uncharted 2, which is my new show-off-the-big screen-game), that means more games like Uncharted 2, and less games like Wii Fit! Fair? Hell.

So I have not bothered to waste my time and check out this Unchartered 2 as of yet but I decided to check the gameplay out on youtube and after watching a few videos this is my impression. I now see why the lack of enthusiasm except for Ivan and why everyone talks more about Demon Souls. This game is basically a Laura Croft Tomb Raider/Prince of Persia/Gears of war type of gameplay. Now this is not a bad thing as I enjoy those games. But I did not see the big WOW effect I was looking for. I looks like a pretty simple AI and most of the challenge is in figuring out how to get around things. I can sum it up as a Puzzle/shooter. Game of the year I don’t think so. There is nothing new here.

Uncharted 2 was great, but short… glad I rented it (that’s another $55 dollars in my pocket, although it is on sale now for $49.99 at Amazon – who said Sony games don’t go down in price fast enough? That’s a ten dollar price reduction in a month). In any case looking forward to playing God of War Collection in 5 days. Who is getting into Borderlands?

the game is 12-15 hr game. 3x of ODST, plus multiplayer and co-op.
it longer than Batman, Bioshock, Prince of Persia, MW2, MGS4, Gears of War 1 & 2, ODST.
and CAD there is no lack of enthusiasm. I remember Phranc, BJ, Robert and other calling GOTY over MW2 as as soon as they fisnished the game. Demon’s Souls is a deeper gamer and more complex than U2 so thats why we talk about it alot. it doesnt necessarily its better. Demon’s Souls wont have a change in GOTY vs U2 just so u know

Yes, people like Ivan and others are calling GotY over Uncharted 2 before they have even finished the game. Dragon Age Origins is a deeper game and more complex than Uncharted 2, and it also much longer. This doesn’t necessarily mean it is better (although I think it is, it’s just because I enjoy RPG’s more). Uncharted 2 is just much faster to play through and easier as a rental.

Get some real time with U2 CAD, you may be more impressed by the graphics and gameplay, as i doubt a Youtube video can do it justice.
Uncharted is a totally different style of game from Demon’s Souls. Overall, I think U2 is a higher quality title, with its highest points in totally different areas of gameplay and presentation. DS is excellent because it gives a sense of accomplishment outside of the realm of linear storyline titles.
U2 is an interactive movie, with an obviously heavier emphasis of gameplay over the choose-your-own-adventure style of heavy Rain. I would vote for U2 for GOTY over DS, even though my total time with U2, even to platinum trophy, might only be a fraction of DS total time, and it might never give me the same rush to complete, but it will probably be more memorable, with the indepth characters and progression.
So yeah, we all talk about Demon Soul’s a lot, because the nature of the game requires interaction and sharing of ideas to play the game well. U2, like most other games of the genre (TPS platformer hybrid) is a solo event, that will reward you more with the richness of the story, than it will reward you with figuring a difficult boss or stage advancing puzzle.

Have you even played ODST? I did and it took me less time to finish Batman than it did ODST, so I can’t see why you are beating a dead horse that you haven’t played with yet.

Lol I definitely wouldn’t be complaining about loading times. After the first load, you can play the entire game in one sitting without loading if you want… Killzone 2 had bad loading times…

As predicted, normal service has resumed.
I have to say though, the ps3 is getting a lot more advertising in the UK. But its like sony have took a huge step backwards in their advertising style. They just show the game and thats it. Maybe they are going for a back to basics approach but it doesn’t make you stop and go WOW.

So in the same timeframe. Forza 3 sold a little less than InFamous.
InFamous being a brand new untested IP vs Forza, which behind GT is a pretty recognizable franchise.
I wouldn’t be singing too many praises.
