Review: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves – one of the most innovative games of the decade?
When Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune first came out a couple of years ago, many hailed the game as the best looking title on the home consoles this generation. However, with the launch of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, the geniuses at Naughty Dog aimed to up the ante. However, is it good enough to raise the bar once again?
Story
In Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Drake is back almost two years after the events of the first game. Drake is still treasure hunting as usual when he encounters some former colleagues in the fortune hunting business. One thing leads to another and Drake is on a trail to find the lost treasure of Marco Polo from his trip from China. It’s suffice to say that in Uncharted 2, Drake gets mixed up in one of the biggest action adventure games of this year involving betrayal, romance and an immersive story that will keep you glued to your TV set.
The single player campaign in Uncharted 2 will run you around 12 hours to complete, which is respectable when compared to other blockbuster titles. However, the game is so immersive you will find yourself playing the game for many hours in one sitting. The chapters are laid out in a way that you always want to continue playing the next one to find out what will happen.
The game also has one of the most amazing set pieces ever seen in a video game. From the war torn city of Nepal to a whole level taking place on a fast moving train, which is probably the most innovative level seen in a video game to date.
Naughty Dog has done what very few game studios have been able to achieve, bridge the gap between story telling and video gaming. For the first time in a game, you will feel like you are in the middle of the story instead of viewing it from outside the game. The developers also achieve in creating a bond between the gamer and the characters within the game.
Controls
The controls in Uncharted 2 are very tight and much more refined from the previous game. There seems to be more animations varying Drake’s movements significantly. In the first game you jumped across every ledge while hanging from it. However, in Uncharted 2 Drake actually reaches and pulls himself towards the next ledge instead of using the same jump action to arrive there.
The platforming is vastly improved from the first game with challenging destinations that will require you to think. The cover system is also finely tuned with amazing results. Drake can take cover and pull any enemy that walks close by and perform a finely executed maneuver to take him out. Rarely did I find myself latching onto a cover I wasn’t aiming for. The fact that Uncharted 2 seamlessly integrates a vertical cover system proves much more variety in how you strategize your attack.
You can choose to latch onto a broken wall, and shoot over it while hanging in mid air. You can also use a hanging sign or even a pillar up in the sky as a cover to take out enemies below. Rarely do shooters allow you to really take advantage of higher ground as in real life. Everything about Drake’s movements are solid and there is very little fault that can be found in the controls. There are a few things that can be improved such as Drake’s reaction to jumping up on an invisible wall, but I’m really nitpicking.
Visuals/Design
The graphics in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves look absolutely stunning. Uncharted 2 completely blows the first game out of the water in terms of graphics and presentation. The snow levels actually look chilly as you can see Drake’s breath as well as snow shuffling around his legs. When you execute a roll, or just stand idle, you can see the snow accumulating on Drake’s jacket. The snow slowly melts leaving a semi-wet look to his jacket. In time Drake’s clothes will slowly dry out as well.
I have never seen a developer dedicate so much effort into getting all of the details perfect as Naughty Dog have with Uncharted 2. I have to agree with some of my peers that Uncharted 2 has the best looking single player campaign, period.
Not only did Naughty Dog craft a extremely well told story that rivals many of the Hollywood blockbuster flicks, but also features one of the best voice acting and dialog as well. The banter between Drake, Elena and Chloe is absolutely gold. The developers have a dialog for almost every situation or circumstance. Drake will whip out a witty joke at the direst of situations.
The game features a comprehensive multiplayer that is also equally addictive to the single player campaign. There is team death match, team objective, gold rush, co-op objective and co-op survival. My favorite mode is co-op survival. If you have played Left 4 Dead’s survival mode or Gears of War 2’s Horde mode then you will feel right at home.
In survival mode, you and two other live players will have to fight off wave after waves of enemies. The game mixes things up by throwing in helicopter attacks, and fully armored boss-like enemy with Gatling guns at you.
The co-op objective mode is also extremely fun as it is like an extension to the single player campaign. I feel that this is much better than having to play the single player campaign with a friend as there is a great deal of replayability with these tightly woven co-op objective missions. Its interesting, as games such as Resistance 2’s co-op and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s spec-op has all gone this route as well.
The multiplayer is definitely solid and even has a perk-style Boost system where gamers can setup their loadout with different boosters. There are boosters such as more ammo, faster reload, and increase blindfire accuracy. With a level cap of 60, gamers will spend a great amount of time ranking up.
Wrap-up
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is fantastic as it is a extremely well crafted game. It is rare to see a game created with so much attention to detail and care. The game is definitely a title that will be talked about in the future as it innovates in so many areas in terms of graphics, story telling and character progression.
I highly recommend that all PS3 owners should go out and purchase Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. However, if you don’t own a PS3 yet you should seriously think about picking one up just to experience this title.

Innovative might not be the best word to describe it… it basically puts together what makes AAA games into AAA games and takes a huge leap forward ahead of everyone else. The graphics, voice acting, and plot and downright the best of this generation (plot is debatable if you are a huge Metal Gear fan), its one of the most cinematic games, and its single-player campaign has to be the best I’ve ever played. Plus the multi-player is pretty stellar for a TPS/action platformer. The most innovative game this gen is LittleBigPlanet, but this is more accessible and overall better.
ONE COMPLAINT: VERY VERY EASY. It’s one of those games that, instead of overwhelming you with an excellent challenge (Demon’s Souls), does it in other ways. I played it on hard, then on expert, then got the platinum (all in the first week) and never ran into trouble. Thank god it has online. That’s where you need real skill. Easier than the first, which was easy most of the way on crushing.
Anyhoos, it’s my favorite game this gen, alongside the first Uncharted and LBP. But I’m planning to pick up Demon’s Souls soon, and it may end up on the list.

Decade? RE4 when it first came out on GameCube.
This game perhaps has the best presentation of the decade for a video game, but not innovation. It is the closest a video game has come to being an action movie while still being a fun game.

This game will go down in history as one of the great game ever made in the world.
Every detail in UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves screams perfectionism. I hope this game is not just a trilogy i hope it never ends. I will buy every UNCHARTED game Naughty Dog makes.
Naughty Dog has raise the bar to a whole level of perfection that can only top by well Sony Computer Entertainment.
I like the ability to tweak the game after you finished the story. I got infinite ammo plus i purchased all the guns I’m buying everything. I want 2 million to buy the fat Nathan Hale to play online.
My favorite online mode is Plunder well we all love to play that mode is just so awesome.
This game is worth buying a PS3 a Googolplex times is that awesome. Everyone even the Xbots need to try this master piece. If Sony continues making games like this the wannabe competitors better be ready to lose money big time.
Again awesome review.
I hope the film is as good or if not better then the game when Columbia Pictures debut the film.

ok so I do not have ANY large or pure Blade stones. I have a few of the cloudstones types, but I do NOT have any large shards.
Only missing blue blood & insanity catalyst for the weapons.
Have all spells, need old monk & maiden miracles (I’ll do them next time) & dragon god (haven’t beaten him yet this cycle).
And that’s it. Depending on the stones you have, that might be the only thing that screws us up.

HAHAH, Maneater made me so angry, i seriously wanted to quit playing the game, lost to him, like, 20-30 times, until i started useing firestorm on the fucker. Use a weapon, and he swats you around, and takes off in the air once a little damage is taken, wasting time till the second one comes. use Firestorm while he is on the ground, and he almost always jumps in the air (After taking shtiloads of damage) and you can predict his return trajectory and nail him again as he lands.

I actually tried firestorm, but didn’t have too much success. I just kept casting warding and slowly chipped away at him with my sword.
I would say he is the cheapest boss. He flies away when ever you hit him. Plus if he hits you, he can easily kill you or knock you off.
When you lock on to him, the camera swings widely when he flies away. And when you take into account there are two of them…

I timed my firestorm, only used it after rolling out of the way of a lunge or attack, then running back towards him and blam firestorm. Whatever you do, don’t let them finish their yellow energy charge routine, they double their damage output for as long as it lasts, which is actually longer than I survive in those situations, so don’t know how long it does last.

Also I am a huge fan of RE4. 5 was pretty good, but it felt like more of the same, only with co-op.
Still I would say that the RE GameCube remake was better. I like the old school exploring to solve puzzles. Sadly, that’s never coming back to the RE franchise.

I have no idea how long it took me first time (is there a way to check?) but it felt long enough. I know that my second play (crushing) was longer than my first, since I made it a point to find all the treasures. I’m level 20-something online, and I’m pretty decent. My K/D ratio might be 1.5 or 1.7 or so.

UC2 clearly does a good job bringing elements together and providing an attractive, well rounded package (going by reviews I have read), but it is hardly innovative. Games like Portal or LBP are innovative. This game simply takes the best parts of mirrors edge, Gears of war, tomb raider and half life and sticks them together as a decent whole.

But it does get to be a pain having to do that. Btw RE4 was just awesome a really cool game. I remember playing the earlier RE’s late at night with all the lights turned out, I will admit it creep me the hell out at times lol. Good series I really hope they keep it up…

Don’t forget. U2 did all this on it’s own merits. The GTA series banks on the efforts of past iterations. How many reviewers were afraid to not give the GTA4 a perfect score due to community backlash?

The only thing that I’m afraid of is that other developers will try to forget about Uncharted 2, give up trying to match it, and try to make a new standard of games. There is absolutely no game coming up as well-rounded as Uncharted 2, and there might not be for a long, long time.
PS3 and multi-plat developers, if you want to stand out from the crowd, then start taking notes.

I was very happy with the graphical look in dead space. This gives me very high hopes for Viscerals latest endeavor Dante’s Inferno.
It also looks like the only way xbots will get a little taste of what a GOW game is like as it appears to be a GOW clone..

There are very few games that have a true resolution of 1080p. Most users believe their games are actually displaying in a resolution of 1080p. They don’t realize that the game is just being upscaled to that resolution.

Yes, it makes me angry when companies lead people to believe that they are viewing a higher resolution than they really are. I heard that lots of Xbox 360 games have 1080p on the back, simply because it can be upscaled to that. If so, I smell feces.
It’s hard to believe that Uncharted 2 is only 720p. The first one was blurry in motion and had a ton of screen tearing and really wasn’t very smooth, but this one is absolutely perfect.
1080p/60fps would have made this look even smoother, but it doesn’t hinder it. The only games that really show a difference with a smoother frame-rate and resolution are high-speed racers. Since I play on a very good TV (58″ Panasonic Vierra, the higher-quality line of Vierras, and it is a plasma), games like WipeOut HD look fantastic. Even my parents (who have horrible eyesight) could see how clear and smooth it is.

Way, way off topic… my birthday is this week. The GF said she got me games (plural). I only asked for the GOW collection.
When we were watching TV, she got excited when a commercial for Dragon Age came on, and said how amazing it looked. So I think I might be getting it. Which is pretty cool.

ROFL I remember in the PS2 days when I gamed a lot more, I was amazed that my hands’ natural positions were in the shape of the DS2. Index fingers higher and slightly more forward than ever before, etc. Or like the time back in Grade 7 (Oh I mean waaaaaay back in Grade 7 =P) when I grew a large, lead-stained callous on the left side of my right middle finger from my pencil. Awesome.
But I’m sure that Demon’s Souls will have an effect on me. Just like Killzone 2 on Elite (beat it!!!@1) made every other FPS seem easy. I never thought about those poor people who are still playing that on Elite, no auto-aim, no reticule, rough ride. I never played a console RPG since Paper Mario, and definitely never played a Dungeon Crawler. I’m looking forward to it. I’m probably going to cry. A lot. But I’m ready.

Saber, I would have to say it’s one of the most rewarding games I’ve played. The first time you beat Maneater and Flamelurker will be something you’ll remember forever. It just might take a few tries though…

You’re correct. The Xbox 360 games are always listed on the box as 1080p but the games do not have a native resolution of 1080p. It’s just a way to fool people who don’t know any better.
I know what you mean. There is nothing like high definition. I have a 42 inch 1080p lcd t.v. that is properly calibrated. The picture quality is out of this world. I like high definition gaming. I don’t even care for watching non-high definition stuff any more. I really like blu rays. The picture and sound is incredible.

Sounds a lot like me. I cringe whenever I see non-HD content on my TV. Mostly because of the screen burn that the bars can give (I have light screen burn on the sides that I can hardly notice, bad thing about plasmas), but the picture quality too. I owned a blu-ray player before I had a PS3, I should’ve got a PS3 in the first place (got it in April). Lets just say that blu-ray movies look fantastic. I sold Killzone 2 a few days ago since I’m done with it, but Uncharted 2 is pretty much what really shows it off. The sound too, has a difference.
Listing a game as a resolution it is not is ridiculous. I like Bill Gates, but I hate the people who run Xbox just because of things like that. I give most of the credit of the 360s success to the developers who made those stellar games for it back in 2007.
Plus, it annoys me when people throw blu-ray off, saying there is no difference. I’ve seen the difference, it is… substantial

I think your missing my point, by no means am I saying I liked the storytelling, I am saying the “way” the game tells the story, or the “vehicle” the story is driven by is innovative.
For example there is one level where you play through a train crash – literally.
The train is crashing down, getting dragged off the cliff bit by bit and your climbing up this massive wreckage as its sliding down.
Another example is, your fighting trying to survive while a building is literally crumbling down- this is the level.
Basically just about every cinematic event, Naughty Dog lets you play through it, while other studios may just make it a cut scene. As Adam Sessler talked about this is the merging of video games and cinematic story telling into a indistinguishable media form. Whether your impressed or not, kudos deserve to be given where its due.

If anything is clear while playing through MW2, I think it’s safe to say that it will not be offering up a legitimate GOTY challenge to the likes of Uncharted 2.

Most everything MS has done has been done in some form or another.
Including everything on Xbox Live. Do you really think party chat is innovative? Wow. MS brings things out that I was doing on my PC years before the Xbox existed. They took others ideas, wrapped it in a bow and charged for it.
I failed to mention Halo as there were plenty of FPS on consoles prior. Halo simply brought together an online component that while existing on other consoles wasn’t all that popular yet with console gamers. Ethernet and an HDD in every console was innovative.

Doesn’t really suck at all. If you ever played a GOW game you would realize that online co op simply would not work in this type game.
They would have to build a separate mode like Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 did, which btw was missing in NG2.

1. halo was the first console game that had level sizes never seen before in a console game with instantaneous loading of the levels.
2. the first console game to use normal and bump mapping with dynamic lighting
3. the first console game that had AI that actually worked with you
4. had a epic story that had usually been reserved for pc games. (this is subjective as most of the ps3 gamers would disagree, since they’re too young to understand the story)
5. the first console FPS that had you driving/flying using the camera for control.
6. It was the first game to release on consoles in DD5.1

now the 360 launched for $400 with no HD player ($150 for a dead HD DVD add on), no wifi, no free online, no rechargable batteries, just 20GB, no HDMI port (what a joke), no optical output, no web browser etc.

Xbox 360 was $400 no Blu-ray 20GB HDD and awful reliability not reliable plus back them no warranty from Microsoft. So most people either had to buy a PS3 or another Xbox 360 either way PS3 comes to be cheaper in price. 120 $150 Xbox Live $50 Wireless Adapter $100 Play in Charge Kit $20. Xbox 360 is still the most expensive console with the least features and built-in add-ons. Xbox 360 is pure crap.

You do realize that there’s a demo out right? Gameplay vids have been around since E3….. One would have to assume that they weren’t going to completely redesign a winning formula anyway.

You seem to not like to look at the NPD or any other recent charts lately.
The PS3 has been outselling the 360. Pretty impressive for not having the cheapest console on the market.
So more people rather spend $100 more on the PS3 than the 360. Who can blame them. They’re probably irate 360 users. I know all my younger brothers friends have been migrating to the better console as of late. I find that pretty significant as I always judged the 360 to be for their demographic (they’re 8 years younger than me)

phranc – given the 200+ million customerbase of the playstation franchise, the ps3 *should* be outselling the competition at least 4:1.
but here it is; only 2 good months out of 24…congrats….and *still* in far last place…
it’s funny you equate 360 owners as younger when it has the most M rated games and was pretty much built on them. the fact is; you’re too much of a ps3 fanboy to see anything objectively.

oh.. i see. So in order to get to your original point of Mike ignoring anything thats innovative on MS consoles you need to bring up Halo, which depending on the history of the site may or may not be there. I wonder if he dissed Halo.
I’m well aware that the XBOX was the most powerful console on the market. As I said it was a PC in a box. Those Halo innovations you mentioned were the technological advances that PC games were doing that first appeared to be possible with a better spec’s machine/console. You seemed to forget the other “innovations” that the Halo series had that were also PC inventions. Recording video playback and map making.

PC rigs aren’t though. A good video card will cost more than twice the price of the 360.

360 is just a ‘crippled’ PC in a box anywhoos.
But hey, as long as you don’t have to make a decision (e.g. where you want to put your files) while installing the game, you’re not a ‘hermit’.
In fact using a 360 is know to make you leet, 1337, uber, and maybe even give you some pwnage…
Besides, everyone knows that console users are dumbwho need games to be simplified in order to get any enjoyment out of them (because 8+ buttons, and multiple stats in game are too taxing on the brain)…

1. sony sold me 3 malfunctioning ps2 last gen while blaming ME for their poor workmanship
2. sony build a huge following on affordable gaming and pissed it all away this gen by pricing the ps3 out of most gamers budgets. then blamed us for not working “two jobs” (Kuturagi) to own one.
3. their fanboys…. worst ilk in the history of gaming.
4. being forced to pay for things i don’t want or need.
5. no Halo
6. sony’s claim that “rumble is last gen” when it released w/o it, then added it later hosing ALL early adopters.
7. their arrogant stance of gamer will buy it simply b/c it has Sony on it.

-actually they gave us many things for free, back when the PS3 was $600, a BD player was $1000, wifi $100, HDMI port at no extra cost and FREE online. $600 was a bargain back then.

or the $150 for a dead HD-DVD add on
or the 20 for recharable batteries
or another $300-$400 for another console with HDMI

online wasnt not standard on console back then, but they made it standard with the PS2 slim. but as of today Wifi is starndard for all current gaming system including portable…but the 360 is the expection. and they are charging $100 for it.
