Modern Warfare 2 breaks all sales records
To call Modern Warfare 2 a success is to underplay its achievement. Not only has the latest title in the Call Of Duty series outsold all other video games in its first five days on sale, but it also racked up more cash than any movie ever has in that time frame as well. Activision is laughing all the way to the bank on this one.
It was always going to sell in huge numbers but I wasn’t sure whether Modern Warfare 2 would be able to topple GTA IV in terms of first week sales. But it has. According to Activision, MW2 has pulled in $550 million of sales. That beats Grand Theft Auto 4 by $50 million and even beats Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince‘s $394 million in its first five days on general release.
Activision CEO Bobby Kotick undoubtedly grinned like a Cheshire cat while stating:
In just five days of sell through, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has become the largest entertainment launch in history and a pop culture phenomenon. The title’s success redefines entertainment as millions of consumers have chosen to play Modern Warfare 2 at unprecedented levels rather than engage in other forms of media.
I’m pleased for the video games industry and the way in which these figures prove video games can compete with movies as a form of entertainment. However, I’m not so pleased for Activision and I’m determined to pick up a pre-owned copy of Modern Warfare 2 to prevent the company getting any more cash.

Of course it made more money the damn game has 3 prices $60 $80 $150 robbery. I still prefer GTA over this garbage. I hope EA make Battlefield: Bad Company 2 really good i didn’t like the first. Call of Duty is so much hype that people forget how shitty the game truly is. Most review just slap a 10/10 they don’t bother really reviewing the game which is sad to see same thing happen with GTA IV no where in hell does those game can be scored so high. I will never buy a Activision never had never will.
November 19th, 2009
You should live (assuming you don’t) in the UK Dave.
All those fairey tales of how Activiion were going to gouge people and lift new on-release game prices from their current £40 – £45 to £50 – £55 turned out to be so much BS.
I bought mine at Sainsburys for £26.
Sorry if I laugh at all that bile over pricing with Activision.
It just didn’t happen around my way.
(and I just don’t believe the UK was unique in this…..of course some stores did sell MW2 on release at £44.99 and some desperate to get the game straight away paid that but you always get the uninformed being suckered)
November 19th, 2009
HH, it’s not about what retailers charged for the game though, as the fact remains that Activision upped the RRP in the UK to £54.99. The supermarkets decided to have a price war but all they cut was their profit margin – they will still have had to pay the cost price dictated by the publishers.

“Modern Warfare 2 breaks all sales recordsâ€
Except most sales, which is kind of important.
There’s probably half a dozen Wii games that have sold more than MW2.
November 19th, 2009
Dave
All I know is that I was primed to expect a price at about £50 – £55.
I could care less how it happened but the fact remains that I got this new game on release day for £26.
The numbers of sales @ particular prices will be sending the message back whatever anyone imagined was going to happen.
November 19th, 2009
Then perhaps you should thank Sainsbury’s
Oh and I’m still a proud ‘none-owner’ of MW2.
November 19th, 2009
Congrats to Activision! I hope next time they think about us (consumers) a bit more.
November 19th, 2009
Shame it’s not the game-play it will be remembered for.
November 19th, 2009
and then in a few months or so u’ll see $millions being dropped from map packs and shit…but hey ppl will buy it…check this vid of AC2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnQZHBodpwk
November 19th, 2009
“Shame it’s not the game-play it will be remembered for.”
One of the best multiplayers of all time. I’m also a bit taken back by all the mw2 hate. For a start I’ve yet to see it priced at what you claimed it is Dave. Why do you keep up with these claims when it’s pretty obvious that this is not the case. Have you actually been to a game shop recently, I would have assumed you guys got a free copy anyway.
November 19th, 2009
Call of Duty was a major letdown for people that love story a huge massive enormous ripoff. Next time people would rent first.
November 19th, 2009
prolly not ivan its the multiplayer thats addicting
November 19th, 2009
i gave it the best shooter award vote.
November 19th, 2009
Ivan, you should grab your soap box and roam the countryside preaching to all the idiots out there who keep buying an obviously shit game. I mean your obviously right and all those millions of people out there who have been conned and bought it “because of the hype” are wrong.
But I bet you wouldn’t mind having a nickel for each copy sold.
I wish i could write a crap game like COD instead of all the amazing games I do write that just don’t sell… I just don’t get it???
November 19th, 2009
Oh and ANYTHING BUT UNCHARTED 2 : Among Thieves for game of the year.
How about COD Modern Warfare 2 perhaps! Hmmmm (strokes chin)
November 19th, 2009
We all know everyone that truly knows gaming voted for UNCHARTED 2: Among thieves in all category it was.
November 19th, 2009
@Ivan
If the vga’s awards are strictly determined by “peoples choice” then u2 doesn’t stand a chance against all the people that voted who have yet to play it.
Its akin to voting for the “most likely to suceed award” in your yearbook. People vote for the dumb jock.
November 19th, 2009
pretty impressive numbers by any means.
anyone see the Walmart add about this game?
“it’s best played on the xbox 360..”….. ouch…lmao..
could be why the 360 version is outselling the ps3 version 2:1.
i have to wonder tho; if the ps3′s exclusives are so “great” (as the fanboys swear) why is a multiplat outselling all of them? ouch…
November 19th, 2009
i think i voted UN2 for GOTY but cod mw2 im sure will win. Do they get money for that too? they’ll prolly sell their trophy on ebay those milf humping studs
November 19th, 2009
kev…so your that guy on the cod mw2 wal-mart commercial that drives his car through the garage door. nice bro keep em coming
November 19th, 2009
kevo – see this is what i mean? you ps3 idiots are too stupid to even post in context.
i was talking about announcer at the end of the commercial….
what a tool…lmao…
November 19th, 2009
dude i got got u man, i was joking. we’re not so different, you and I lmao yea whats ur gamertag i have hardly any friends on the xbox
November 19th, 2009
@kev.
That was a 360 sponsored commercial. Come one.. you should have known that. I love that commerical btw. “You’ll never get this far”
“i have to wonder tho; if the ps3’s exclusives are so “great†(as the fanboys swear) why is a multiplat outselling all of them? ouch…”
It’s blowing away sales of 360 exclusives as well.
And to answer the question a bit differently would be………because it’s multi platform. It has more than one platform to sell on. Hence why GTA4 outsold Halo 3.
silly rabbit.
November 19th, 2009
“we’re not so different, you and I ”
Don’t be proud of that..lmao
November 19th, 2009
kev is on denial he knows Xbox 360 is shitty and barely has any exclusives or any game worth owning. PS3 owners got more then just Call of Duty to buy we got.
God of War Collection
Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack In Time
Demon’s Souls
UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves
Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2
November 19th, 2009
u really want to waste your time playing with lil kids?
November 19th, 2009
@Happy
I know I see you post the same thing over and over with how much you spent on MW2, and I got a similar sweet deal through Amazon with a $20 promotional code for use with the next game.
However the PC MW2 cost $10 more than other new release PC games, and you can also look at the ridiculously prices “special editions” for proof of price gouging.
November 19th, 2009
Obviously, if we look at video games sales only, then Modern Warfare 2 would be the game of the year. However, with that being said, I still like Uncharted 2 as game of the year. I thought this game brought a more balanced overall experience. I also liked the Batman game.
November 19th, 2009
Has everyone beat MW2 yet?
When is it OK to talk about plot (lack of) or spoilers?
November 19th, 2009
I havent beat it yet, but feel free to talk about it all you want. its not like it has a top notch SP campaign
November 19th, 2009
“And to answer the question a bit differently would be………because it’s multi platform. It has more than one platform to sell on. Hence why GTA4 outsold Halo 3.”
Only if u include ps3 and pc sales, same goes for MW1 & MW2
November 19th, 2009
MW2 sold more on the 360 only if you include 360 sales
November 19th, 2009
I will beat it this month or the next one i gotta visit my cousin in Long Island to play it because i will not waste my money on this shit too expensive for what you get. Xbox 360 owners are buying this game more then PS3 maybe because of the facts that this is the only game they really got decent a multiplaform. PS3 owners have so many other PS3 exclusive they can purchased.
November 19th, 2009
phranctoast
If you want to rip on the capitalist system then fine, there’s a lot about it I’ll happily join the line about & give a thoroughly well deserved kicking about.
Not that most are going to be so general but zeroing in & complaining about 1 company’s reported intention(s) when they don’t actually happen on the ground seems to me to be a bit weak.
Anyways, as you & I have both said our experience, irrespective of what Activision may have intended, was a cheap brand new game.
The net result interests me far more than say the opposite outcome – would people be praising Activision if they were reported, repeatedly & at length, saying they wanted to significantly cut game prices and in fact they ended up being sold for 50% extra on launch?
Of course not.
TBH I’ve been waiting to see the price war happen for quite a while – and as an occasional PC gamer I’m well aware that console games have been ridiculously priced for some time.
I’m just surprised that console game devs have gotten away with their outrageous price-points they have kept for so long.
I’m not that surprised to see pricing converge although as I now play on the console on-line more I’m not bother if that means PC game prices rise and console prices get price-warred down.
Sorry SW.
Roca
“MW2 sold more on the 360 only if you include 360 sales”
Even for you that has to be one of the most dumb things you have come out with yet.
November 19th, 2009
The 360 MW2 outselling PS3 version is common sense. Try thinking for a change. Your talking US Only for one. There are more 360s in the US then PS3s. And the PS3 people have a lot more games to choose from then the 360 people. Therefore people like me would like to have MW2 but would prefer to spend our money on GOW collection and all the other great games coming out on the PS3. I will buy Rachet and Clank first or Demon Souls.
Common sense you people don’t have obviously.
November 19th, 2009
you were the only idiot to take that joke seriously (who would’ve guessed). didnt you noticed the “wink wink” smiley
taking things personal again
November 19th, 2009
@ nacaissie
you nailed…it is common sense (or even basic math)
November 19th, 2009
LoL that what i was saying we PS3 owners got more then just Call Of Duty to buy we got a bunch of high profile exclusives to buy every damn month. Also the PS3 is play mostly by everyone while the Xbox 360 is mainly shooter. Is really common sense. If you united the sales for every game on Xbox 360 and also the PS3 sales aside. I bet the PS3 has a bigger number is dollar more money made.
November 19th, 2009
Roca – “MW2 sold more on the 360 only if you include 360 salesâ€
WTF!?!?!? LMAO…!!! This clown has lost it…..
I can understand why you don’t like the campaign. The story is waaaaaay over your head. Maybe if they had a princess locked in a castle that needs rescuing, you could keep up…lmao…
..same with phranc apparently…lmao..
Btw; phranc, where’s that serial number I asked for?
November 19th, 2009
I can’t give shit to a game being sold for 59.99 when that is the norm. Although I have to wonder who was buying the hardened and prestige versions.
It is nice to see some 1st party and other games getting prices at the $55 range and below when they are new games.
November 19th, 2009
ncaissie – “The 360 MW2 outselling PS3 version is common sense. Try thinking for a change. Your talking US Only for one. There are more 360s in the US then PS3s. And the PS3 people have a lot more games to choose from then the 360 people”
this is why you ps3 fanboys are considered the braindamaged of the gaming industry.
1. the 360 does not have a 2:1 console sales ratio the ps3, yet MW2 sold more copies on the 360 than the ps3 by a ratio of 2:1. interesting
2. the 360 has more games available. it was you fanboys who keep reminding us it’s becuase “the 360 had an early launch”.
look, don’t type…. really. you make ps3 gamers look dumber than they really are…
November 19th, 2009
@kev
“Btw; phranc, where’s that serial number I asked for?”
Huh?
November 19th, 2009
whack whack whack whack
November 19th, 2009
phranc – oh…gonna play stupid now? or are you not playing?
you said you had your original ps2 from 2000. i asked for the serial number to verify.
you ran….
November 19th, 2009
Kev really, what nacissie said makes sense.
within a 45 days span…PS3 owner had to choose from a good amount of exclusive NSG2, DS, U2, R+C, GoW Collection and Buzz World. most of the PS3 sell will spread out on those 6 exclusive games “plus” all the great multiplatform games like AC2, MW2, Tekken, Borderlands, DAO, etc.
November 19th, 2009
“you said you had your original ps2 from 2000. i asked for the serial number to verify”
I got 2 original PS2..want the serial N ?
November 19th, 2009
Roca – oh, i love watching you sony clowns spin data….
if it wasn’t “45 days” you would have reduced it to “30 days”. if not valid, you would have reduced it to “15 days”…. friggin hilarious…lmao..
what good are exclusives if they don’t sell consoles? given the poor sales of the ps3 exclusives, it’s easy to see why the ps3 is in such far last place….
November 19th, 2009
roca – i’m dealing with phranc….
he’s a big boy..let him stand behind his own lie.
November 19th, 2009
“phranc – oh…gonna play stupid now? or are you not playing?
you said you had your original ps2 from 2000. i asked for the serial number to verify.
you ran….”
Sorry must have missed your post about that. Where the hell was that?
November 19th, 2009
actually my original PS2s are as valid as Phranc’s.
you just cant face the truth that There are more Original PS2 than 360s (broken ones and working ones combine)
November 19th, 2009
The PS3 came out a year ahead of PS3 and only manage to pass the PS3 worldwide sales barely. Sony is gonna surpass them soon they have been catching up pretty damn fast. Microsoft even rushed the console worry that Sony was again going to destroy them like they did last generation. I wonder what you Xbots are going to be saying when Sony surpasses Microsoft i can’t wait to here your bitching for that thing. And all PS3 exclsuives sell very well.
November 19th, 2009
I’ll have the serial number for him today. I got it back from my brother recently as he doesn’t use it anymore so it’s sitting in my car now (i don’t have to pick it up to prove a point).
November 19th, 2009
Roca – you should never use the word “truth”.
you still haven’t used it. proven by the fact you claim to know for FACT that there are more original ps2 than 360.. when sony has NEVER given data to support this claim.
in fact, sony STILL refuses to even admit they have a problem..even after settling the lawsuit….
sad…
November 19th, 2009
“The PS3 came out a year ahead of PS3 and only manage to pass the PS3 worldwide sales barely”
says the ps3 fanboys…lmao…
November 19th, 2009
“when sony has NEVER given data to support this claim”
neither has MS about all the broken/dead/RRoD 360s, but yet they still claim they have sold over 30M units.
idk why you keep trying, bc you not going to get anywhere with this.
November 19th, 2009
Roca – “neither has MS about all the broken/dead/RRoD 360s, but yet they still claim they have sold over 30M units.”
that’s because repairs aren’t counted as sales, moron..lmao…
November 19th, 2009
roca – “idk why you keep trying, bc you not going to get anywhere with this.”
you’re right. you ps3 fanboys will never change. useless as your console of choice….bleh…
November 19th, 2009
Can anyone here host photos?
I’ll take pictures of my ps2 and serial number and send it to someone to host if they can….
November 19th, 2009
ask him to send the pics of his 3 dead PS2s and his working 360 (which I doubt it is still working)…you will see how he runs away
November 19th, 2009
Kev
I know many ppl (carlb is one of them) that has traded in their dead or almost dead 360 to buy a new one.
thats 2 system sold but only one is active on a household.
November 19th, 2009
“ask him to send the pics of his 3 dead PS2s and his working 360 (which I doubt it is still working)…you will see how he runs away”
I’m fairly doubtful it was three. It was probably one and he still has a working one. If it’s three it kind of makes him look like a moron for buying three.
It’s also odd that with three ps2′s he still didn’t play the GOW series which has been called the best ps2 games of all time.
November 19th, 2009
…….I told you he will run away
November 19th, 2009
“…because it’s multi platform. It has more than one platform to sell on.”
Twilight, MW2, counting only PS3 sales, sold more than any other exclusive on the platform in the same period of time. This was his point. While it sold more than any other exclusive on 360 as well counting only 360 sales, the point is made several times here that PS3 has the best exclusives that gamers are willing to pay money for, and much better than any multi-platform game. Apparently, the majority of PS3 gamers who are willing to pay money for their games like MW2 more than any other exclusive on the platform at this time.
“However the PC MW2 cost $10 more than other new release PC games…”
And many PC gamers are willing to pay $10 more to play it on day one. Those who are not will wait for it to come down in price and buy it anyway.
“…and you can also look at the ridiculously prices ‘special editions’ for proof of price gouging.”
Yes, I agree, God of War III Ultimate Edition for $100 is a great example. Gamers who have the money will still buy it in droves.
“I have to wonder who was buying the hardened and prestige versions.”
The same people that will buy the God of War 3 Ultimate Edition.
“LoL that what i was saying we PS3 owners got more then just Call Of Duty to buy we got a bunch of high profile exclusives to buy every damn month.”
Yes, but the majority of those PS3 gamers are buying MW2 instead.
“Also the PS3 is play mostly by everyone while the Xbox 360 is mainly shooter. Is really common sense. If you united the sales for every game on Xbox 360 and also the PS3 sales aside. I bet the PS3 has a bigger number is dollar more money made.”
That’s an interesting theory, and it isn’t true:
Oct NPD top 20:
UC2 (PS3): 537K
Borderlands(360): 418K
NBA2K10 (360): 311K
H3ODST (360): 271K
NBA2K10 (PS3): 213K
FM3 (360): 175K
FIFA10 (360): 156K
DemSouls (PS3): 156K
FIFA10 (PS3): 150K
WWE10 (360): 150K
Brutal Leg (360): 150K
Tekken 6 (PS3): 150K
Madden ’10 (360): 113K
Borderlands(PS3): 113K
360: 1,744,000
PS3: 1,169,000
As you can see, the 360 is not only outselling PS3 game for game, but also has RPG, racing, sports, and action besides shooters for genres here. You lost the bet Ivan.
November 19th, 2009
CarlB:
I meant the entire library not just 20 games LMFAO.
PS3 is the console to own who ever buys an Xbox now is a pure moron.
November 19th, 2009
“thats 2 system sold but only one is active on a household.”
Yes, after almost four years of gaming on my launch 360, I decided to trade in my still functioning 360 for a new one that had an upgraded processor, more onboard memory, etc. PS3 is not that old yet. I also know many previous PS3 owners (like roca) who bought either an additional PS3 Slim or replaced their old ones with the new model.
Maybe your argument will fly when the 360 is no longer outselling PS3 in software every month roca. The latest numbers show it is still outselling PS3 by 33% in total top software sales, and almost four times as many bought the top selling RPG title (and multiplatform title) for the month on 360.
November 19th, 2009
this NPD arguments is a joke because there are more 360s than PS3s. it only make sense to assume that most multiplatform games are going to sell more on the console with more units out.
you can’t compare “360 vs PS3″ in japan for the same reason.
Tales of Visperia on the PS3 sold more the first day than what it had sold for an entire year on the 360.
another point is that the PS3 produced and the software sales are more then likely to be spread out amoung the exclusive and multipat games
November 19th, 2009
IvanPSP:
Sorry, just thought I might use the top 20 best selling titles list as being representative of each console’s respective library sales currently. 360 still has the most favorably reviewed current gen titles in it’s library on Metacritic… 90%+ of all AAA multiplatform titles still sell more on 360… Do you have a better example? lol
November 19th, 2009
“this NPD arguments is a joke because there are more 360s than PS3s.”
What happened to “2 system sold but only one is active on a household” roca? That would put the actual number of working 360s well below PS3s, and PS3 would be consistently outselling 360 in software every month by your argument.
“Tales of Visperia on the PS3 sold more the first day than what it had sold for an entire year on the 360.”
That may be, but Borderlands managed to sell more in it’s first few weeks than both versions of Vesperia combined to date, and ToV has been out for well over a year. Apparently NPD is not that much of a joke, but if there ever is an EPD, let me know. As it is, the major console manufacturers have already stated North America as a market dwarfs Japan in sales consistently.
“more then likely to be spread out amoung the exclusive and multipat games”
Precisely why I counted exclusives and multiplatform sales together above (Oct NPD sales), and it still did not work in favor of PS3, even though it had the top selling exclusive for the month.
November 19th, 2009
@ CarlB
ohh wow…here we go again but w.e
“Maybe your argument will fly when the 360 is no longer outselling PS3 in software every month roca.”
Kev started the arguments, not me. and it was about 360 and PS3 sales. it was about PS2 and 360 defects.
“I also know many previous PS3 owners (like roca) who bought either an additional PS3 Slim or replaced their old ones with the new model”
uhmm wrong again. I bought a Slim for the leaving room to use it as a BD player and so my brother could play on it and not take any of my gaming time.
my Original PS3 (60GB) with 500GB HDD is what Im still using… the slim didnt replace it as most of the time they are both being used at the same time. the few times you see me playing CoD its because im playing with him (since I bought one copy of MW2 for $30 and he bought his at gamestop after the game came out).
sorry I you got offended by me for putting your name in one of my post…I did it because Kev likes calling other “liars”. it wasnt anything personal.

Yo so biased towards Xbox 360 why is that i think you should just sell the PS3 you claim to own. I’m just stating the hard true on what I’m reading.
November 19th, 2009
“I bought a Slim for the leaving room to use it as a BD player and so my brother could play on it and not take any of my gaming time.”
Yes roca, that is an additional PS3 for one household. Read it, I said, “either an additional PS3 Slim OR…”
Didn’t even break squelch roca, I do not get offended that easily, so no worries.
November 19th, 2009
I got 3 PS3. and Roca. has 2 in his house that makes it 5 PS3. Roca where you live so we can combine all PS3 into one beast. No answer needed.
November 19th, 2009
I meant to say:
“Kev started the arguments, not me. and it *was not* about 360 and PS3 sales. it was about PS2 and 360 defects.”
“Borderlands managed to sell more in it’s first few weeks than both versions of Vesperia combined to date”
wow…my point was that games are going to sell more on the console that has more units out (for that specific region). now your trying to compare JP vs US (which US still have the edge). this is not about which console sells more, its about why a console sells more (more console = more sales, less games to choose from = more sales for those few games)
games sell more on the 360 in the US (as there are more 360). games sell more on the PS3 in JP (as there are more PS3). there is really no need to argue CarlB.
November 19th, 2009
Ivan,
I am “biased” to owning and enjoying more than one console, but more specifically, the individual gamees I can play on them. Besides, you are only reading responses (that are backed up with “the hard true”) to your own bias.
November 19th, 2009
“Didn’t even break squelch roca, I do not get offended that easily, so no worries.”
well looking at the way you came at me I would guess that you took it in a wrong way. Kev started the flaming about companies hiding “sales numbers” but you only directed you comments towards me. and the arguments was about 360 vs PS2 defects and yet you manage to include me and the PS3 slim that I bought
November 19th, 2009
Roca.:
LoL, i would never make that mistake. And we all know Xbox 360 is the most defective and least reliable console in the world. I have never had any problems and i got 6 PS2.
November 19th, 2009
CarlB:
We all know you try to make PS3 look bad but it always fails. I’m trying to call you what you are I’m give you more facts. I give credit when credit is due.
November 19th, 2009
CalrB: “Yes roca, that is an additional PS3 for one household”
yes but it didnt replace my old PS3 as there are both active at the same time because me and my brother hardly play the same type games. he plays other stuff that im not into and he buys his own games. you will see trophy collection games like MW2, Far Cry 2, Flashpoint, HAWX and END WAR, Bad Company etc.
and you know what type of games I play. so two console in one house one and both active is different than ““2 system sold but only one is active on a household” – and only one working”
November 19th, 2009
Its good Carlb came out to defend kev’s statement. I don’t even think he knew what he meant, but carl does
Anyway.
Sales /= great game or better game. plenty of wii games prove this.
carlb should know this. You remind me of a friend of mine who argues for the sake of arguing. You missed your calling. should have been a lawyer and not a marine

I don’t think Wii has any good game or real games for that matter.

“games sell more on the 360 in the US (as there are more 360). games sell more on the PS3 in JP (as there are more PS3). there is really no need to argue CarlB.”
Sorry, I thought we were just having a discussion?
In any case, you make a very good point:
Japan:
360- 1.1M
PS3- 3.8M
Wii- 8.7M
America:
360- 19M
PS3- 10.3M
Wii- 25.8M
What I don’t see here is how Borderlands, when 360 has only a 2 to 1 lead over PS3 in America, could outsell the the PS3 version nearly 4 to 1.
November 19th, 2009
Borderland camo the same date as Uncharted 2
“America:
360- 19M
PS3- 10.3M”
didnt kev said the MW2 on the 360 outsold the PS3 version 2:1 even though the 360 console doesnt have a 2:1 advantage.
thanks CarlB for providing these numbers, it will kill alot of worthless “sales” arguments
November 19th, 2009
CarlB:
This statistic don’t make Xbox 360 games any better.
Also American favor Xbox 360 not because is any better then PLAYSTATION 3 but because is the console that belongs to their country. This has always been my believe. Sony is going to end this biased philosophy once and for all. And i know that not every American is biased towards Xbox 360 some are truthful loyal PlayStation fanatics.
November 19th, 2009
I hear ya Roca.
I’m interested in Borderlands, but U2 came out followed two weeks by R+C followed two weeks by MW2 followed a week later with GOW:C.
Assassins creed 2 and Borderlands kind of gets pushed behind. It doesn’t matter. I’ll probably get both for Christmas anyhow.
November 19th, 2009
“Also American favor Xbox 360 not because is any better then PLAYSTATION 3 but because is the console that belongs to their country. This has always been my believe.”
I don’t really believe that. Maybe true with the ps3 in Japan but the price is what kept ps3 sales down in the USA until now.
November 19th, 2009
@ Phranc
whenever you going to get bortherlands let me know. im looking for someone to coop with before I buy the game. on Black friday best buy is going to have it for $35
November 19th, 2009
“Sales /= great game or better game.”
Uncharted 2 proves this
Joking aside, I don’t believe sales necessarily equate to a great game or better game. Each one is unique in it’s own way, going way beyond genre at times. It can be representative of a specific market whom it appeals to though.

phranctoast:
“Maybe true with the ps3 in Japan but the price is what kept ps3 sales down in the USA until now.”
Yes, i also believe the PS3 price was a major huge issue for many cheap gamers. Lucky right now the PS3 is selling very well. Plus it has a massive enormous list of high profile must have jaw dropping mind blowing exclusives.
Roca.:
I always wonder why is call Black Friday. I wish i had a Wal-Mart near me so i can get some good deals. I guess is eBay again.
November 19th, 2009
“Borderland camo the same date as Uncharted 2″
That’s nice to know roca, but it still doesn’t answer my question which was in regards to your point: “games sell more on the 360 in the US (as there are more 360).” So, really, why would the 360 version outsell the PS3 version 4 to 1 if console sales only equated for a 2 to 1 ratio and the game received the same review score for both versions?
November 19th, 2009
ok sales supposed to be 2:1
but one can guess half of the ppl who were going to get Borderlands bought Uncharted instead including me and Phranc
so since sell of borderlands was cut by half then you can say sales are going to look like this
2: 0.5 (half) which is the same as 4 to 1
November 19th, 2009
I think he did answer it. If someone is budgeted for only so many games per month you need to pick and choose.
It’s also like you said. Some genres sell better on different systems. Tekken 6 sold better on ps3 for instance.
November 19th, 2009
“well looking at the way you came at me” -> HAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAAAH

November 19th, 2009
“but one can guess half of the ppl who were going to get Borderlands bought Uncharted instead”
and NBA2K10 as it outnumbers Borderlands sales 2 to 1 on the platform as well.
Your argument of amount of titles to choose from spreading sales out makes sense as well as 360 has 8 in the top 20 and PS3 only has 5.
November 19th, 2009
Carl B,
MW2 has sold a truck load of copies on both systems. Apparently, this is the type of game that appeals to the masses regardless of the system it is being played on. I am one of the people who is playing this game on the Ps3 along with the God of War collection.
As far as collector’s editions go, I have only purchased a collector’s edition of Gears of War one because it was the same price as the regular editon. I am one of the people who does not normally see a value in special edition games. God of War 3 will probably be another exception to this.
November 19th, 2009
It is called Black Friday, because traditionally, such a large percent of the years sales occur on Black Friday (because of the huge sales) that most businesses balance sheets move into the “black” (profit) from the “red” (loosing money).
November 19th, 2009
The 360 built its fanbase heavily upon FPS gamer culture. That any multi-plat FPS would outsell based on install base is no surprise to me. Just like how the PS brand was partially build on fighters like Tekken and SF, it is no surprise (nor a bragging point) that those games far outsell on the PS3 using the same metric.
Really now.
November 19th, 2009
JofaMang:
Thanks. Good name i guess now that i know how it go it.

“That any multi-plat FPS would outsell based on install base is no surprise to me.”
Me either. Borderlands is a multi-plat Action RPG. There is nothing to brag about any console.

That’s a little bit different to how I heard it.
My understanding was that it goes way back to the days when it took until ‘black Friday’ for the stores to reach overall profitability for the year.
They could then afford some serious sales & discounting.
There are various meanings (I expect it’s common knowledge that ‘black’ ****day is often used to denote a terrible tragedy or disasterous event).
Wiki does mention the explaination I thought was the appropriate as far as retailing goes –
“By the early 1980s, an alternative theory began to be circulated: that retailers traditionally operated at a financial loss for most of the year (January through November) and made their profit during the holiday season, beginning on the day after Thanksgiving.
When this would be recorded in the financial records, once-common accounting practices would use red ink to show negative amounts and black ink to show positive amounts.
Black Friday, under this theory, is the beginning of the period where retailers would no longer have losses (the red) and instead take in the year’s profits (the black).[13]
The earliest known use, again found by Bonnie Taylor-Blake, is from 1981, again from Philadelphia, and presents the “black ink” theory as one of several competing possibilities:
If the day is the year’s biggest for retailers, why is it called Black Friday? Because it is a day retailers make profits — black ink, said Grace McFeeley of Cherry Hill Mall.
“I think it came from the media,” said William Timmons of Strawbridge & Clothier.
“It’s the employees, we’re the ones who call it Black Friday,” said Belle Stephens of Moorestown Mall. “We work extra hard. It’s a long hard day for the employees.”

its a Black Friday for our pockets
November 20th, 2009
Not trying to be an ass, but how is that explanation any different from mine, other than its longer, and quoted from wiki?
November 20th, 2009
@ Jofa
lol I just read both of your comments and its exactly the same:
Jofa: “It is called Black Friday, because traditionally, such a large percent of the years sales occur on Black Friday (because of the huge sales) that most businesses balance sheets move into the “black†(profit) from the “red†(loosing money).”
Happy: (quoted from wiki) “If the day is the year’s biggest for retailers, why is it called Black Friday? Because it is a day retailers make profits — black ink”
looks the same to me
November 20th, 2009
I thought it represented the slaughter of the American Indians by the Pilgrims after the first Thanksgiving.

Your answer is entirely different.
You said that the businesses move into profit “because traditionally, such a large percent of the years sales occur on Black Friday (because of the huge sales)”
and that it is because of this
“that most businesses balance sheets move into the “black†(profit) from the “red†(loosing money)”
That’s not the same.
The idea is that businesses have spent the year trading in the red & at a loss up until arong the time of ‘black friday’ and that it is reaching that point in the year
(at that time that the business moves into profit)
which allows them to afford to discount & have big sales.
Black Friday itself is not responsible for this (which is what you have said).
The point is that the profit/loss situation, taken over the whole year, has moved from loss (the red) to profit (the black) at around this time enabling the deep cuts in margin/price.
Are you sure you can’t see the difference?
Do you really reckon that what you said was the same?
W.E.
All I did was post up my understanding of what it came from, no need for a row.
If you really think that what you said is the same then fine.
November 20th, 2009
Uh oh.
‘arong’ = around
