Call Of Duty MMO game on way?
The latest Call Of Duty game, Modern Warfare 2, has already racked up sales records and the franchise doesn’t look like dying anytime soon. However, it could be about to switch genres, with rumors of a Call Of Duty MMO on the way.
The speculation over a Call Of Duty MMO began with one line in an L.A. Times article looking at the launch of Modern Warfare 2. It’s a third party recalling what was said by an unnamed source at the company, which is hardly the strongest foundation for a story. Ben Fritz claimed:
One person close to the company said it also was considering adapting Call of Duty as a massively multi-player online world. Although Infinity Ward and Treyarch have produced sequels in alternating years since 2005, the publisher now has a third development studio working on future versions.
This isn’t the first time there’s been talk of a Call Of Duty MMO. As reported by Gamespot back in March 2008, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick said:
When you think about other properties that we own and control like Call of Duty, and what would be the natural evolution of a property like Call of Duty into a massively multiplayer environment.
I’m now wondering if Fritz was simply referring to that statement. A quick Google search for ‘Call Of Duty MMO‘ brings up the older story after all. Either way, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if a Call Of Duty MMO was on the cards, especially as it could explain comments made by Activision Blizzard CFO Thomas Tippl recently concerning charging for online play.

I hope this is true as long as is not more then $10 i will get it. Also it needs to have a lot of maps weapons and modes also good graphics and a deep stats system. The best appropriate price will be $5 monthly. And only vehicles and helicopter needs to be added. Also no sacrifices for PS3 owners because Xbox 360 is not powerful enough. Lokk at MAG is gonna rule the world like Warhawk has.

* Atari – first console market leader; now defunct.
* Microsoft – the newest player in the market, releasing the Xbox and Xbox 360 consoles.
* Nintendo – historically the best known console manufacturer; also the longest running company in the market, and long-time dominant market leader of the handheld console market.
* Sega – a partial dominant leader during the 16-bit era, now a third-party publisher.
* Sony Computer Entertainment – became the console market leader with its first and second console, the Sony PlayStation, and produced the most successful console to date, the PlayStation 2.
When publishing for game consoles, game publishers take on the burden of a great deal of inventory risk. All significant console manufacturers since Nintendo with its NES (1985) have monopolized the manufacture of every game made for their console, and have required all publishers to pay a royalty for every game so manufactured. This royalty must be paid at the time of manufacturing, as opposed to royalty payments in almost all other industries, where royalties are paid upon actual sales of the product—and, importantly, are payable for games that did not sell to a consumer. So, if a game publisher orders one million copies of its game, but half of them do not sell, the publisher has already paid the full console manufacturer royalty on one million copies of the game, and has to absorb that cost.

I guess that it doesn’t affect me if there’s a COD MMORPG. I usually play 1 MMO at a time, off and on. I’ve played Maple Story and now I play Runescape (god forbid, the community is horrible and it is getting worse and worse, but it has depth. I’ll buy a month of it maybe every 6 months or so).
MMOs are the kings of both replay value and repetition (sometimes they give satisfaction, but mostly they try to addict you like hell). Just don’t get sucked in =P.

Everquest 2 is a shit game. I played Everquest 1 for far too long, and tried EQ2 a few years back, found it to be too shallow of a game, in comparison. Glad to be done with MMOs, to be honest.
