PS3 PSN future subscription model possibilities
A recent presentation slide shown at a investor meeting eludes to a new subscription model coming to the Playstation Network. It is not clear yet what this new revenue stream will entail, but could Sony be thinking about charging for PSN?
There have been clues scattered throughout the past year by Sony that could hint at what this new subscription model will be. With so many possibilities, I have decided to list them out.
Pay to play online
Of course the most obvious possibility is actually charging for the PSN service similarly to Microsoft’s Xbox Live service. Meaning PS3 gamers would have to pay to play online, which is the basic functionality of the service. However, with Sony beating their chest about PSN being free for three years, it seems somewhat doubtful that the company would do a 180 degrees.
Movie and Game rental subscription service
Clues scattered through the XMB have alluded to this possibility for some time. The fact that there is a new field next to PSN games for an expiration date hints at a game rental service. Also with Sony talking about gamers watching movies inside the Home theaters elude to such service as well.
Premium PSN service
The PSN store offers premium content for a cost, such as themes, wallpapers and avatars. Sony may be planning a premium subscription plan where users who subscribe would get access to free premium content plus the Qore magazine.
MMO RPG Free-to-Play subscription model
Sony has been talking about leveraging a Free-to-Play model, which has been popular in Europe and Asia for MMOs. With Sony Online getting ready to launch three MMOs on the PS3 next year this subscription model may be in reference to Free-to-Play. Rumors also point to Final Fantasy XIV possibly using this subscription model, hence the PS3 exclusivity. For those unfamiliar with Free-to-Play, gamers will be able to access a portion of the game for free and would have to pay extra to unlock newer content and areas.
What do our readers think? With so many possibilities, which subscription model seems likely to be what Sony is referring to?

I would be extremely surprised if they did a backflip and decided to charge for PSN. It would be a stupid move.
However, I am not surprised if they introduce a “premium section” subscription. This has been hinted at for ages I think, with the “premium items” appearing on PSN.
Myself, I won’t be paying subscription for anything. I don’t believe in it for Xbox, for WOW and I won’t for PS either.

Just a quick note to all that Assasins Creed 2 have been given the nod to the 360 version in terms of graphics by Digital Foundry. Another one added to the list for the 360.

Just watch how sony will start offering a premium online gaming service alongside a free gaming service that will be up to the games developer to choose from. If they are happy to pay for hosting online games over PSN they will ensure their game connects to the free service, wheras companies like activision might decide to go with the premium service for games like Modern Warfare 3.

Sony has always held the stance that they “reserve the right†to start charging for PSN. This statement was made by Hirai a couple of years ago, but was laughed off as impossible by the moronic ps3 fanboy masses.
I still can’t figure out why the ps3 fanboys think they know more than the guys making the ps3 and PSN…. A true sign of mental instability….
For some reason the ps3 fanboys think online gaming happens for free, thusly should be free. Anyone who’s ever run on online service or infrastructure can tell you, it’s a costly endeavor. (yes, I work for a SAAS company)
They get this idea from the virgin, basement dwelling pc gamers who swear online pc gaming is “free†then ignore the pleas for donations on online pc gaming sites. If it was truly “free†no donation would be needed nor asked for. Simple logic, but over the heads of the young, ignorant pc gamers.
The inexplicable fantasy land the ps3 fanboys like to live in is nice for their adolescent dreams of gaming nirvana, but it doesn’t line up with real world commerce.
From all indications, Sony will have to start charging for PSN to offset the costs of keeping it up and running. The billions they have lost this gen on hardware alone, with no profit in sight for the ps3, cannot be sustained, and certainly won’t be allowed to continue under Stringer’s new restructuring model.
Even if it does happen tho; the idiot ps3 fanboy masses will *still* swear it’s better than xbox live (even tho it will still lag behind xbl for feature sets as they do now)… prolly b/c sony will charge less than MS and hope the ecommerce (micro) transactions make up the difference.
Any wonder why ps3 fanboys are considered the ilk of console gaming? Lmao…

Sony has a subscribtion service already – Quore.
I will expect more services like that with a subs fee. the Digital Comic book store is coming soon, rental of PS1 will be cool, lets say 5 per month for a resonable price.
as Phranc said, a movie rental service will be awesome…since they charge way too mucho for HD movies. Sony and the cosumer will benefit from it.
any “optional” subscription-based services will be welcome as long as they keep PSN free

It was an awesome demo. Be sure to let it run idle on the title screen for a couple of minutes (about 3) to see a great trailer. You might have seen it before when looking at some trailers online, looks even better running through the PS3 on the big screen though.

-uhmm sames goes for the 360 “the most unreliable gaming system in history” and it still has overpriced “propetary pheripherals, you still have to play to play online and stream movies from netflix (both free on the PS3). you still have to pay MS $300 for a crappy system when the competitor’s console cost the same with a whole bunch of free stuff – BD player, Blue tooth, Free online play, free Netflix, HDD on all consoles, the ability to play PC games (streamed), web browser, Home and more.

I spend about 6 hrs straight going through 4-2 to find that fucking stone. the good thing is I still have (because its so rare i didnt want to use it) I upgrade the blade stone weapon to MAX without exiting the “upgrade window” then after the Trophy popped up I quited the game so it wouldnt save. so I still have that stone (if only we can put it up on ebay)

Yeah but there was no need for online in Infamous. They would have shoehorned in some sort of death match just for the heck of it.
Games like Bioshock, Infamous, AC2, Fall Out 3, PoP, Dead Space, etc, etc… were all better because they didn’t force online and make cuts the core game.
Look at RE5. Sure it was fun and a good co-op game, but it’s the shortest game of all of the RE franchise. They could have made a better game if they just focused on the game itself.

Ivan, Nintendo didn’t have to lower the cost and I don’t think they would start loosing money when they are still #1. The cost of manufacturing goes down over time and that gives them room to lower the prices. I have never heard of Nintendo loosing money and want to see Kev’s source.

Sometimes it freezes a little bit also some trophies don’t sync well they do a bit later. Also i think this is the only game that when you get a trophy there’s no sound.

the problem is whenever you try to sync your trophies you get an error right before the sync reaches 100%
it’s probably from all the facebook head syncing their profile/trophies every minute so they can get all their trophy updates on facebook
