PS3 Premium PSN subscription confirmed with more details
Two days ago some slides from an investor meeting outlining a new subscription model were picked up on the Web. The slides caused many to question whether Sony is planning on charging for PSN service on the PS3. Today Sony confirmed that the company is planning on bringing an optional premium level service to the PS3.
I wrote several possibilities for the new subscription model recently. According to Gamespot, Kaz Hirai, CEO of SCE confirmed plans of creating a new premium PSN service some time next year. Hirai assured PS3 owners that the current PSN service will remain free and the company has no plans to charge gamers to play online.
According to Hirai, the new PSN subscription will offer premium content and services. The “services” part has me intrigued as it implies something else beside the additional content. My best guess is the long rumored PSN game and movie rental subscription service.
Gamers have noticed several months ago that PSN games started coming with expiration fields in the information section, which lead to the speculation of a game rental service. If true, this may be a great reason for consumers to try out games before buying.

As long as I don’t have to pay for my online gaming or game updates, I don’t really give a damn. I’m oldschool enough to not invest in titles I don’t physically own, and I hate renting.

I’m calling it quits once this current video game generation ends. I’ve had waaaaaaaay too many disappointments with the PS3, 360, and the Wii. After this I’m done. No more video games for me unless it’s virtual reality or something

We’ve actually changed out posting strategy to try to keep news flowing instead of restricting to 1 post per day.

If it does involve rentals at a reasonable flat rate monthly fee similar to GameFly, this would be an awesome service. GameTap has done it with the PC, no reason consoles cannot follow suit as well.

It’ll be interesting to see just how closely the new PSN service (and subsequently the old one) end up mirroring the XBL approach.

not to argue, but I belived Hirai and Sony already stated that the PSN service will remain free. “w.e is free now, will stay free” including online gameplay, netflix, webroswer, voice/txt chat etc.
premiun paid services looks to be more like the “Qore” paid subs the PSN has right now. which gets you free PS1/PSN games (from time to time), free themes and exclusive beta access and demos.

I would hope that everyone here that owns a PS3 has taken the time the weigh the pros and cons of the machine.
I decided it was worth it and made the **choice** to buy one (40gig).
Its just like saying that I was forced into buying a machine where-by should I want to upgrade my HDD I would be forced into buying an ‘off the shelf’ HDD with an extra $XX tacked on for good measure! Or that I’d be forced to buy batteries for my controllers every X months.

The PS4 probably doesn’t need a much more powerful CPU. Faster/more RAM and a more poewrful GPU would make a huge improvement however.

Since this is all guessing games as to what this is all involved, truly arguing this has no merit anyway.
If this is indeed a subscription service for movies, I for one couldn’t be happier. It kind of undercuts anything Sony would like to do with Netflix as Sonys service offers newer movies and newer tv shows. When thinking about the amount of movies I rent, a $10 monthly fee would be more then fair.
if on top of that you also get Quore, and a rental games system then we’re talking win friggin’ win here.
This may be one model MS steals from PSN.

But IMO (and yes it is an opinion) it would seem absurd to expect IBM & Toshiba to continue to develop Cell just because Sony would like them to.
Even should they decide to do so then it would seem pretty obvious that they will develop it however they see fit, not in accordance with Sony’s wishes seeing as how Sony took the money & bailed out of Cell.
Like I said, besides a few server applications and the upscaling Toshiba TV nobody rushed to go Cell.
It’s another Sony failure at carving out a new successful propriatary platform – and one even they saw months back and ejected out of.

You can’t be serious. There was things to pay for on psn since it started. If anyone said that you know as well as I do they were talking about to play online, which is the common important factor. Bringing silver on sponsored weekend is a pretty bad desperation cry.
If they charge us to play online like they do, Ill obviously concede my argument, but I don’t see that happening as its a big selling point for the PS3.

okay, i’m done with this thread.
In consclusion, based off of the resident ps3 fanboy posts:
1. PSN is free..even tho sony is charging for a premium service.
2. PS3 exclusives are better than multiplats, even tho the multiplats score high and have waaaay more sales.
3. Reviewers calling PS3 games “better” than the competition is valid, while reviewers calling 360 games “better” are to be ignored.
4. Sales = quality when it comes to “50 million GT games sold”, but doesn’t equate to quality when their exclusives don’t sell well.
is it any wonder why ps3 fanboys are laughed at? LMAO…

Heres what I’m hoping the subscription will mean.
Rentals of games.
retail and psn downloadable smaller games.
Unlimited access to the PSN movie/TV service meaning you do not have to pay an individual fee for each.
Unlimted access to paid for themes.
Access to the magazine Quore.
I’m sure theres other things they can pile in there.
As long as I’m not paying to pay my games online I’m a happy camper.
