Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Xbox 360 outsells PS3 by 2:1
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is already hailed as the best selling video game ever. After taking a quick look at North America estimates, it seems like the Xbox 360 version is outselling the PS3 version by 2:1.
The game is rumored to have sold 10 million copies across all platforms worldwide. According to VGChartz, a site specializing in sales “estimates,” has posted current sales figures for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. According to the site, COD: MW2 sold approximately 3.2 million units on the Xbox 360, compared to the PS3’s 1.6 million.
I suppose its not that surprising when you consider the fact that there are twice as many Xbox 360s sold in NA compared to the PS3. Next month’s NPD report will be interesting as it will show if PS3 sales have normalized and how close VGChartz’s numbers are.

I assume Toshiba is going to handle die shrinking for the cell. It would kind of kill Sonys “10 year lifecycle” if they had to use the same cell they have now for the next 7 years.
At the very least it’s going to give M$ a cost advantage when it comes to having the CPU and GPU on the same chip.

I read the review from joystiq. They said the AI director is messed up and the game is a lot more difficult in comparison to the first. To the point of not being fun.
I think the biggest issue with it coming out a year after the first one is valve isn’t known to be that fast of a developer. It takes them forever to do anything. This made L4D feel like the 360’s version of GT5P. A glorified demo to hold you over until the real version shows up a year later.

Ps3 is huge in Europe. However, with Ps3’s exclusives and price drop, the gap in America is closing quckly.
As far as Mw2 goes, I completed the game. The game was okay but I feel it’s overated. There’s nothing new that was brought to the table. It’s similar to the past games.

In fact I specifically made mention of the existing Cell probably staying in production under existing agreements
(which I believe were made when Sony sold their share of the Cell out to toshiba & IBM some time ago).

their are both Gold Trophies I think. the first one should be easy. but the second is a bit challenging. you have to complete 10 challenges without quiting.
I’ve gotten as far as Challenge #6 but I kept on failing (tried it about 8 times) then it was getting late so I have to turn it off. Im going to have to start from the beggining next time.

Beating the game in under 5 hours has to be damn near impossible. At the five hour mark I was just ascending Pandoras temple where you can’t come back down until you get it.
Challenge of the Gods is difficult because you can’t save between stages like you can in gow2.

I have hints off so the nyad trophy I should have had, but the R2 never appeared near it. With Seeing red, the only weapon/magic I didn’t have maxed was the Blade of Artemis, which I just straight up hate as a weapon.
I’m not sure how to get the 200 hit combo. I figure I have to be fighting a bunch of guys that can all take enough abuse and then I have to hit them with Posidians rage to boost it up.

Anyone with half a brain knows that Sony’s 10b MANUFACTURING contract with Toshiba, announced only 5 days after Toshiba officially ended their involvment with HD-DVD, was a pay off for removing BD’s competitor. Being severely inferior, it was only a matter of time before HDDVD went under anyhow, but Sony expediated the process. He is in charge of deep future engineering, taking theoretical improvements from his engineering staff to a lab, and trying to make it work.
He said one version of the Cell has been halted, and even being able to confirm that single fact, declined to comment on the future of the Cell. THUS, he never claimed the Cell was dead. only you Xbots have done that.

They don’t endorse for free…. Unless you don’t know what the definition of endorsement is. (which you prolly don’t)
Truly sad is that even with no hd dvd on the market, bluray has still yet to become mainstream even after 2 years on the market. Not good. Can you image how bad it would’ve been for bluray with a competitor on the market. Catastrophe is the word that comes to mind.
There’s a reason why sony paid them to leave the market. They knew bluray wouldn’t win agains hd dvd in a fair fight in the market. You’re right tho; it wasn’t very ethical of Sony, but then again, we’re reminded daily of how very, very unethical sony and their fanboy “soldiers” are. Unfortunately, the damage to Sony won’t end with the ps3. Every indicator says they are set to repeat this gen’s mistakes with the PS4’s architecture. Congrats on the cell. It takes sony first party devs 4 years and $60 million dollars to create one game b/c of the poor architecture of the cell. Not good. Less games released = less money made. Meanwhile, every developer who is NOT being paid by sony says the cell is not optimum for gaming and is very hard (read: expensive) to develop for. Ouch…. Then again, the cell was developed as a networking architecture (another fact you missed) not for gaming.

PSBots unite! So which is it? Either the 360 does have a 50% failure rate (widely touted by you previously on this site), which means it is neck and neck with PS3 in actual working units (and still selling twice as many software units, at least in the case of this game if the source is to be believed) in the NPD market, or 360 actually has twice as many working units than PS3 in NPD markets, and this is the only reason it is selling twice as much?
Interesting note as well… PS2 was outselling XBox by over 2.5 times in NPD within the XBox’s short lifetime. What a noticeable turnaround within just one generation by the new player to upset the leader in the exact same market.
BTW, gameplay before graphics always. Each game has it’s own unique fun factor to contribute, regardless of whether it is “exclusive” or not. If you can get both relatively great gameplay and graphics (i.e. Uncharted/Gears of War – for the times they were released) the better. If only gameplay, you still have a great experience. Thanks for the excellent example of Infamous, not so much of a graphics powerhouse, but an excellent game RC316.
Even better graphics in 2011/12 with the next gen, no doubt.

Sometimes I just wonder how far graphics will go. First time I played PS2 (upgrading from the mighty N64), I thought it was like real life. When I first got my PS3 and played Uncharted, I was blown away (the graphical advancements over the last gen is the biggest jump so far, but gameplay and length went down the crapper), but I was smarter. I spotted the flaws (not perfectly smooth, could be clearer, etc) and set my expectations for the next-next gen. Playing Uncharted 2, I ran out of ideas of how it could look better. 3D should be coming in fairly soon, along with 120FPS and a true-true-TRUE HD.
I know that in 20 years I will look back and think that games were crap. Yup, gameplay over graphics always. But mix both of those together perfectly you get… immersion? Intensity? Awe? Hell, you just get a real game.
And some people (one really stands out from the crowd, and Ivan isn’t here right now… so… well, lets not point fingers, we all know who he/she/it is. Really, I don’t mind a good, structures, LITERATE argument, but people need to respect eachother’s opinions (unless it is completely stupid or they back it up with lies/don’t back it up at all). Oh, I know all fanboys have a little personality inside them…

Undoubtedly there’s also a stack of DLC coming for Xbox owners which may be hurting PS3 for those with both making the choice to go Xbox or PS3.
It may be that it never comes to PS3 or a truncated version of it shows up eventually or it is going to be timed so that it arrives many months after the Xbox crew get it.
Either way it just takes the shine off of the PS3 version when it amounts to exactly the same thing in every other respect.

I’m not surprised by this at all. Who would buy a game that gets rehashed every year like clockwork, when you could buy Uncharted 2, Demon’s Souls, Ratchet and Clank, AC2, etc, etc, etc
There has been COD3, COD MW, COD Wow, COD MW2. Plus they have released 5 expansion for each. And on top of that, they are releasing another COD for next holiday season.
Just like the music game genre, Activision will flood the market, by releasing the same game as much as they possibly can. Killing all possible interest.

Resolution does not equate to better graphics. For instance, when sony re-releases the old GOW (originally on the ps2) they will do so in 1080p.

Sorry, I was just going off of this article about Borderlands that was written in the afternoon the day after it was officially released, which said the fix was “incoming”. It might have been fixed that evening, I’m not sure.

The MW article was the same as far as date (the day after launch) goes, but said the fix would be in by weeks end… so it seems it’s issues might have lasted a bit longer than Borderlands (if all server issues with it were truly fixed the next evening… not sure).

Either way, I know it is not entirely Sony’s fault, as the developer’s are responsible for running those servers. It’s not like the 360 or PC have always had trouble free launch weeks in the past either, they just seem to have fared slightly better with these two titles in particular, which one would expect if you are paying extra as you do with XBL Gold or a more expensive PC that can handle it.

@roca, is “how many exclusives” and lists really that important to you, or the experience that each individual game gives? If it’s how many, 360 actually has about 7 more console exclusives out for it released this year than PS3 with generally favorable reviews. This doesn’t mean it is necessarily better though, as each game is a different experience. If it’s the individual experience, and you enjoy realistic racing games, let’s say, you might like Forza Motorsport 3 (92) more than Wipeout HD Fury (89). “More” is not necessarily better to individual gamers with individual tastes.
What do you care how many games have dedicated servers, as long as they run fine on launch day (like say… MW2 and Borderlands as the latest examples). Sometimes “dedicated” is not as good as standardized. Can you come up with a multiplatform multiplayer game that runs better on PS3’s “dedicated” servers? (honest question there)
What good is “free” if you can’t play the game online the day you get it, but others can because they have paid about $3 a month extra for it ?
Infamous doesn’t look as good as Gears of War, but I had a lot more fun with it. Dead Rising doesn’t look as good as MGS4, but I had a lot more fun with it. Each game is it’s own, graphics is merely a fraction of the experience, and each console has it’s own great individual gaming experiences to offer. Neither is superior overall.

Uncharted 2 looked great, but to be honest, I really think that if it was a multiplatform title (with the PS3 version looking the same as it does now) there would be little to no difference on 360. Maybe a cutscene might look better on one, or the colors brighter on the other, framerate better on one, pop-in worse on the other, etc. but I imagine overall each would look good, and the PC version would curb stomp both the console versions.

what makes you think the PS3 version will have frame issue and all that nonsense. your assuming things. but the fact of the matter is that U2 and K2 have been critically acclaimed as the best looking console games and Best looking console FPS. non of the have any frame issues or anything of the sort.
GT5p runs at 1080/60FPS and no frame rate issues,
MAG 256 player at the same time 30FPS, not Frame rate issues. same for Resistance 2 (60MP, 8 co-op), Wipeout (1080p/60FPS high velocity game).
you obviously leaning your answer to the 360 side. you can never give good PS3 comment without countering with a 360 one.

IIRC Carlb has mentioned here that the distance/detailing on U2 is one of the noteable & unimpressive parts to it.

They have a subscription service to a online magazine (Quore) with the subscription you can get beta releases and other little goodies that most other psn users don’t get or at least not unless they preorder a demo.

Why do you have to bring into this roca? I barely have enough time for my own comments that I would like to make… very well, the answer is because there are already two people arguing, most of this crap has already been brought up before, and I see no need to add to the chatter, as it really is a non-issue for me personally.
But if you insist, very well. PSN is “free” for gamers themselves to play online multiplayer games on and to view all those things you can pay money for if you desire to. One must still pay for an ISP’s connection, but once you do, online multiplayer, Netflix (albeit this is of slightly higher quality on 360), Facebook, and other things are free where you would have to pay for XBL Gold on 360. PSN is not “free” for developers, as they must pay a fee to Sony for bandwidth usage. PSN servers are also not as standardized and unified for all games as XBL servers, as each developer also has to pay for and run their own servers for each game over PSN.

I never said it would have frame issues. I did say some of the existing minor “issues” on PS3 (for instance draw distance, portrait layering, occasional freezing, fog, pop-in, jaggies, load times, etc.) may or may not exist on 360. I am not “assuming” anything, as Uncharted 2 is an exclusive and not a multiplatform. The only fair comparison would be if it was multiplatform.
Is it the “best looking” game I have played to date? Probably, but only slightly so, and I haven’t played very many in the past year compared to some. For instance, it really reminded me of RE5 in the graphics department. Bottom line, this game would be just as fun on 360, and if there was any graphical differences, they would be slight.
I’m not entirely sure it’s advantages in looks lie so much in technical superiority based graphics (resolution, textures, etc.) as it does to the artwork and attention to detail that was obviously a credit to the artists and programmers on the team. Where it does seem to be technical based (and where most of the obvious differences lie) is how the team managed to work the PS3 architecture to improve so much over Uncharted 1.

Exploiting the g2g efficiency of modern LCDs does not make for a graphically superior game, it makes it smooth, by sacrificing color palette and polygon counts. I would put GeoW2 on par if only slightly below KZ2, on par or slightly better than Uncharted 1, but in no way could I stand it next to U2 and have any doubts.

As I took a sampling amongst what I thought was a fair estimate of “the Critics” that were what I thought to be some of the best known, that also happened to be used by MetaCritic (IGN, GameSpot, 1UP), I saw things like “gorgeous visuals,” “the most impressive visuals on PlayStation 3,” and “With stunning visuals (that still rank amongst the best in gaming today)”.
What I did not see mentioned “by the Critics” once was “Best looking game this gen”. Maybe you just saw a critic here say that?

I think what you’re seeing here is people responding to the word “forced”. Sony at no point is pointing a gun to your head.
The best way of seeing how people find worth vs price is the people that wait until whats in the box represents what they are willing to pay.
You could look at this in other ways also. I thought the eyetoy on the ps1 was a great idea, but the only way for something like that gain the popularity it deserves was to be packaged in the box originally like what the wii did.
Just to bring up another point. You seem to point out the wi fi in the ps3. Well look at the headset that comes packaged with the 360. The people that don’t play online have no use for it, Making it a forced item on the consumer.

The 360 wasn’t upcharged to $600 due to the headset. It’s a freebie. The ps3 was upcharged to $600 due to the non-optional features they included in every ps3.
If you want to game on the ps3 you are forced to pay for bluray and the wifi. It’s just part of the price. This is why the ps3 is still priced higher than the competition and why it launched at twice the price of previous generation playstations.
I really don’t care if the resident fanboys don’t like the word “forced”. It’s a fact. If you want to play a ps3 video game, you WILL pay for wifi and bluray that’s included in the ps3 or you don’t play. Even you don’t want/need them. You have no choice but to pay for items that are not needed for gaming. Forced.
The problem I, and the vast majority of previous playstation owners, have is that the upcharge of the ps3 due to those features and that bluray and wifi has no discernable benefit to gaming.
This is compounded by the fact that sony removed the “rumble” controller from their $600 ps3 at launch, while calling this feature “last generation” (Kuturagi).
Of course, they added it later and forced (again, that word…..) all early ps3 buyers to pay for a new controller if they wanted one that rumbles like the later versions included with the console. That made no gaming sense at $600 each.
Bluray is a storage format, but hasn’t really shown any benefits to gaming so why are gamers being charged for it?
Actually, it never was hyped to benefit gaming from sony and was only done so by their fanboys who promised larger, never before seen worlds, due to bluray size. (yeah, I’m still wondering how those clowns drew that line, too…. Silly….).
Needless to say, it hasn’t happened.
Wifi is nice, but wired connections will always be more reliable. With ISP willing to put a wired connection in any room of the house you want, the need for wifi isn’t there.
It’s nice to have, but certainly not *needed* to game online. Certainly not worth ostracizing the vast majority of your old customers by including it while pricing yourself out of their budgets.
Maybe it is handy to have by a small percentage of ps3 owners who own both a 1080p hidef television and a wireless home network, but it’s not wise for sony to steer your business from such small segments as they are finding out the hard way.
Maybe a larger market will be ready next gen. I’m certain Sony will be ready, no doubt.
I realize that most of the resident ps3 fanboys will swear with their dying breath that the ps3 is the “value” of the century but the meager sales and cold shoulders by over 200 million of their previous customers proves it’s just not so.
Anyway, thanks for the distraction. 4 days off and a turkey hangover makes coming back to work kind of sucky…

I see your point about being an early adopter and having those features whether you like it or not. I find it hard to count the wifi as its a $20 accessory for the ps3 (older 20 gig units)yet $80 on the 360. being that a headset costs the same they more or less offset each other.
I’ll give you Blu ray though. At the time of debut blu ray diodes were very expensive inflating the ps3 price and driving away people that would have bought it if it were cheaper. I was one of the people looking into Blu ray before it was even announced as the disc format for the ps3 making its inclusion a win win for me and a great value. As for games, the best use I see is to keep disc count down allowing the developer that freedom, and more space for higher resolution textures at the expense of seek time.
I gave to an good opening and you failed to jump on it with the headset, as the arcade does not have one included. This gets me back to that other point though. I have to give the marketing geniuses at MS some props. They have a $199 360 on the market but it truly is smoke and mirrors for the ignorant few. Whether you want to admit it or not those same people who buy it will more than likely want a headset and want a HDD, which will run them into prices significantly higher than what the ps3 costs. If you bought the arcade I’m sure you’d be picking up the other “accessories” as well.
Almost forgot to mention this. Few people remember this tid bit. The built in wireless on the ps3 also allows for remote play through the psp. It’s not just for playing online games wirelessly (I’m wired although I have a wireless network also btw)

Arcade + HDD + wifi + batteries + XBL (x4 years) + a stand alone BD player.

total premium = $870
