EA drops Dante’s Inferno demo early to win over the PS3 crowd

December 2, 2009

EA drops Dante's Inferno early to win over the PS3 crowd Dante’s Inferno has been call many things by gamers. It’s a great looking hack-n-slasher with more gore and violence than you can shake a stick at. However, EA has an uphill battle as it has to win over its toughest critics, the PS3 crowd.

According to a recent press release, EA will be dropping the demo for Dante’s Inferno two weeks earlier on the PSN (Dec. 10) than Xbox Live (Dec. 24).  I just can’t help think that EA is doing this as a ploy to schmooze over the PS3 user base as the publisher undoubtedly knows that when it comes to Dante’s Inferno, that’s its toughest crowd.

Anytime you bring up Dante’s Inferno, you just can’t avoid someone calling it a cheap God of War (GoW) knock-off. Gamers should just give the game a chance; after all it does look pretty good from the trailers. I’m pretty sure that there’s room enough for more than one good hack-n-slasher, after all there are over a dozen good FPS out there.

I think Dante’s looks great. How is it a cheap GOW? It’s a hack ‘n Slash! That’s like saying Halo is a cheap Timesplitters because it’s a FPS.

    oldschool1987:
I don’t think Mike is calling the game a cheap knock off but saying most people look at Dante’s Inferno as one. And yes Halo is the cheapest FPS ever made no doubt about that.

I finally decided to come back, don’t know why.

  3. phranctoast:

I plan in giving the game a chance but it definitely looks like a GOW clone.

The fact that the sickle is also on a chain greatly reinforces that point.

If this game wasn’t made by Viceral games who knows how’d I’d feel about it. They did win me over with Dead Space which I still feel is better than RE5

  4. Ivan_PSP:

    phranctoast:
If it was publish by SCEA i would buy it but is not. Yeah i know i will be missing on a lot of great games but Killzone 3 and resistance 3 will fill the heart desire.

Resistance 3 is my most wanted game i will pay anything for that game hope Insomniac Games is making that game.

  5. phranctoast:

I’m hoping the game is great and lots of people buy it.

When EA develops games like this (Dead Space, Mirrors Edge) they need to be supported, or else we just start seeing the next iteration in the franchises they are so famous for instead, as that crap is less of a financial crap shoot.

I straight up want to punch anyone in the teeth that didn’t buy the gem that was Dead Space.

  6. twilight:

First of all, Ivan welcome back.
I may end up checking this game out but I must admit I am wondering if it is going to be any good. I guess will see when the demo hits.
    Phranctoast,
I also liked Dead Space and Mirror’s Edge. I know a lot of people could’t play Mirror’s Edge because of motion sickness. I’m glad I don’t have this problem. I am always willing to support decent new stuff.

  7. ncaissie:

I have enough games right now but if it is like GOW I will be getting it next year.

  8. Roca.:

I would hold my opinion on Dante’s Inferno until I play the Demo.. but I usually have low expectations on games that are compared to GoW because most of them have failed and there is no way to duplicate the awesomeness of the Blades of Chaos and now the Glove of the Gods (new).

But I read part of the Second Book of Dante’s Inferno. pretty awesome book btw and the game is totally different from the book.

Dead Space is the best horror game this gen :D

so PSN is getting the demo 2 weeks ealier. I guess it paid off being a Gold Member on the PSN and its cheaper than XBL ;)

  9. Barnabe Jones:

You beat me to the Dead Space comment.

But yeah, I think it has a lot of potential. I love the whole abstract take on hell.

There’s a pretty good amount of hack-and-slash games lined up for next year: Darksiders, Dante, bayonetta, and last but not least GOW

If it sucks it sucks, but if it’s really good I hope people can get over the “like god of war” and give it a legitimate chance for the sake of new IP’s instead of the same ol shit.

  11. phranctoast:

“There’s a pretty good amount of hack-and-slash games lined up for next year: Darksiders, Dante, bayonetta, and last but not least GOW”

So true. They couldn’t space them out a little better?

I feel Bayonetta slipping out from under me. You can only hear so many terrible things about a game before you had enough.

  12. Roca.:

“I feel Bayonetta slipping out from under me. You can only hear so many terrible things about a game before you had enough.”

i didnt even download the demo because of the cheesy graphics of the game

  13. Barnabe Jones:

I agree. Although Bayonetta is very sexy, it seems like that game is the weakest link.

I played the demo. Graphics asides, it’s a hallow shell of DMC. It is basically DMC, but nowhere near as good.

  14. phranctoast:

“I played the demo. Graphics asides, it’s a hallow shell of DMC. It is basically DMC, but nowhere near as good.”

Oddly enough it comes from the creator of DMC. (Hideki Kamiya)

  15. Roca.:

Heavy Rain is schudele to release in Feb. we will have a hell of a 1st quarter in 2010

  16. phranctoast:

I thought it was Feb in Japan. Did they announce a NA date yet?

Since it’s a Western Style game I have to assume that the release won’t be to far from the Japanese release.

  17. Roca.:

I will look it up phranc,

but WKC is still coming in Feb and and Heavy Rain is coming early next year.
    Jan: MAG
    Feb: WKC, Star Ocean 4
    March: GoW3, FF13, Yakuza3
April: unknown – could be Heavy Rain or GT5
    May: 3D dot Heroes
Summer: unknown – GT5 more likely
    Holyday: unknown

  18. Barnabe Jones:

    Least anticipated game: Star Ocean
Most anticipated game: 3D Dot heros

  19. RobertCarr316:

its werid out of nowhere my ps3 has started working again its really strange when i pushed the button i got the YLOD but when i pushed it a few more times it just started working again :p

also got my super elite 360 in the mail today with MW2 and ODST but i gotta wait till christmass to ude it :(

  20. phranctoast:

“also got my super elite 360 in the mail today with MW2 and ODST but i gotta wait till christmass to ude it”

    That sucks. Waiting blows.

  21. Roca.:

“its werid out of nowhere my ps3 has started working again its really strange when i pushed the button i got the YLOD but when i pushed it a few more times it just started working again :p”

if I were you, I would start copying all your “game saved files” into a memory device. once the system is dead you will most likely lose your saved files.

  22. Barnabe Jones:

    -5/6 Assassins seals
    -75/100 feathers
    -66/66 view points synced
    -30/30 codex pages
-missing 3 of subject 16′s files. I only managed to decode a handful so far. Some are pretty hard or abstract.
-Still have a good amount of side missions to wrap up

I might be done in another week or so. ;)

  23. phranctoast:

What is everyone take on Darksiders?

While I think the graphics suck the game itself seems pretty damn awesome.

  24. Roca.:

    judging by videos I’ve seen…
    graphics suck
gameplay looks good but then again I havent heard anything about this game and its coming out next month and no one is talking about it.

  25. JofaMang:

EA has to do a lot more for me to give a shit about their updateware and conceptual rip-offs than give me a demo 2 weeks before the 360 does. Big game companies hurt gamers. While all businesses obey the bottom line, the bigger a company gets, the further away it gets away from obtaining profit through innovation. once established, its all about milking. EA is the king of milking franchises (NHL is on its 17th version) and is teaching everyone else what it knows (Activision, Ubisoft). Fuck EA. Give me more From Software titles, heh.

  26. phranctoast:

“gameplay looks good but then again I havent heard anything about this game and its coming out next month and no one is talking about it.”

Thats a surprise as I saw adds for it on IGN six months ago. Didn’t make sense to me as the game isn’t slated to release until early 2010.

check out some stuff on gametrailers. It looks like a damn cool game.

  27. phranctoast:

    @jofa
I think they know they are perceived that way and if Dead Space is any indication as to the direction they will stray at times, I for one am all for it.

  28. Roca.:

EA is not as bad as they used to be (excecpt for the sports game). Activision is the worst and the New King of Milking and they dont even have any sports game.

EA is taking their time developing thier games and bring more new IPs than before (Mirrors Edge, Dead Space, Army of Two, Dante’s Inferno etc).

  29. twilight:

I’d like to see more new original titles. I am getting tired of the same old games constantly being re-made over and over again.

  30. phranctoast:

Thats what we have Team ICO for…..

  31. CAD:

    Jofa

You have got to be a complete idiot if you think Sports games are not suppose to come out every year. LOL

  32. oldschool1987:

‘Halo is the cheapest FPS ever made no doubt about that’

@ Ivan: Come on mate you can’t say that, Halo is fucking brilliant.

  33. phranctoast:

    “Jofa

You have got to be a complete idiot if you think Sports games are not suppose to come out every year. LOL”

They could definitely get away with Stat updates via DLC, and only create core changes every two years if they really wanted.

hmmm… $15 for DLC or $59.99 for the game again with stat updates and minor changes. I wonder what EA will pick…

  34. Barnabe Jones:

“the bigger a company gets, the further away it gets away from obtaining profit through innovation.”

-That’s the thesis statement for my Wii argument.

Mirror’s Edge was a huge letdown, but on the other hand, Dead Space was a very pleasant surprise.

  35. Barnabe Jones:

Oh and on the topic of EA…

Doesn’t anyone find it disgusting that Dragon age doesn’t have an item bank on the disc, but you can buy one for $6.00 via day one DLC?

Seriously that is by far the worse DLC scam yet. Much worse than the RE5 fiasco.

  36. Roca.:

“Doesn’t anyone find it disgusting that Dragon age doesn’t have an item bank on the disc, but you can buy one for $6.00 via day one DLC?”

this game looks crappy as shit, I wouldnt pay anything more than the $35 I paid for the game.

  37. ncaissie:

Thank god for studios own by Sony.
They have more to loose if they put out a crappy title. They seem to put a lot more effort into their work.

Companies like EA don’t care because multi platform games have a bigger audience.

It sucks that MS closed so many of their studios.

  38. JofaMang:

    @Roca

I decided I won’t be buying DA: O for PS3, after playing it extensively on my PC, I witnessed it for the console on a friends 360, and even if the PS3 version looks twice as good (it isn’t, just making a point, not flamebait honest) I won’t bother with getting it for console. I was looking forward to throphy whoring that title up, but am far too used to the superior PC graphics and controls.

  39. Barnabe Jones:

Jofa, Do you like it though?

I’m getting close to finishing AC2, so I’ll probably be starting it within a week or so.

I’m just amazed at the item bank thing though. Imagine if you had to pay $6.99 for Stockpile Thomas. Wow.

  40. ncaissie:

Halo rocks for MP. I never finished SP mode. LAN parties are the best when you can swear at the guy in the next room. I use to setup about 5-6 TVs and get drunk playing Halo 2 LAN parties. That was so much fun.

  41. JofaMang:

    @BJ
Yeah, it is a solid RPG, if a little dumbed down for the wow crowd. Nothing wrong with DA: 0 as a game, just personal preference as mentioned, heh.

  42. Ghost:

Speaking of Dead Space that is what I am playing right now. Decided to revist it a couple of days ago, and try for my plat on impossible mode. btw what is your PSN ID phran? That GOW demo you sent me kicked ass but I thought they could have made it longer…

  43. Barnabe Jones:

    Jofa,

Glad to hear. That’s pretty much the general consensus from all of the reviews I’ve read.

I finally cracked open the packaging and took a look at the guide. I’m trying to decide my race, class, etc.

  44. JofaMang:

To enjoy all the available play paths, you will have to playthrough 6 times, as their are 6 available story arcs based on your Race/class combinations.

  45. SW:

Its a shame it auto levels tho. Was the one thing that pissed me off about oblivion too.

  46. Spideydog:

Oh you soooo didn’t have a dig at Oblivion did you SW …… Alright, get the jousting sticks out ;)

  47. phranctoast:

    @ghost
    phranctoast

  48. phranctoast:

This was on destructiod. I don’t know how reliable it is due to that fact.

“It’s no secret by now that Bayonetta on the PS3 is little more than a less-than-stellar port of the leading Xbox 360 version. Long loading times, poor framerate and altogether murkier graphics stand out to make Bayonetta inferior on the PS3, but it’s now being reported that Western PS3 fans might not suffer as much as Japanese ones.

According to Gamekyo (translated by Wearetheinternetz), Sega and Platinum Games have “taken responsibility” for the slapdash port and have charged an engineering team from Sony itself with the task of bringing it up to par before the North American release. The team hopes to “guarantee” a version of Bayonetta that is equal to the PS3′s considerable power.

Here’s hoping they resolve the issue. Bayonetta is looking like it’ll be one of 2010′s standout action games and it would suck if one version was crappier than the other.”

  49. Roca.:

    nice post Phranc.

  50. phranctoast:

I was really looking forward to this game, as I love the genre and it really isn’t over saturated like the FPS genre. Hopefully this is true.

  51. twilight:

I hope they make Bayonetta better. I am going to buy the game regardless. However, I would like to have a game that runs good as well.

  52. phranctoast:

If they do it, (fix game)it would be nice if there was a disc exchange policy in place for the people that bought the game in Japan.

  53. harry sachz:

I played the Bayonetta demo last night. I have to say, I was not overly impressed. I can’t see how Famitsu gave it a perfect score…

  54. twilight:

What didn’t you like about the bayonetta demo?

  55. Roca.:

    Harry…..thank you.

I thought the same from videos alone (cheesy graphics) that I didnt even bother downloading the demo

  56. Barnabe Jones:

    I agree Harry.

Basically.. Cheesy story and characters. The J-pop music will make you cringe. Not a very good presentation (both versions). Levels feel hallow and empty. The bad guys look like they were ripped straight out of DMC4.

Her moves were unique enough… but it still feels like a poor mans DMC.

The boss battles were pretty decent, but that’s about it.

  57. harry sachz:

    twilight,

Not that I hated it, I just couldn’t see how Famitsu could have given it a perfect score.

    She’s pretty hot though.

    Roca…you’re welcome? :s

  58. twilight:

    Roca,Barnabe, and Harry,
Thanks for the feedback. I haven’t seen the demo. I was trying to see if I should still get this game or not. I would hate to waste my money on a crappy game.

  59. ViRuS:

So those who own a PS3 are getting the demo earlier. Lucky people.

  60. Ivan_PSP:

    Yeah we are…

  61. phranctoast:

played the demo. I enjoyed it. It was hardly the train wreck I was expecting with all the negativity surrounding the PS3 version.

Here’s hoping that whatever issues there are Sony and Sega clear it up before release.

The game is very DMC like. Of course that’s a forgivable offense when both game share the same creator.

  62. Barnabe Jones:

    Twilight,

The demo is up on both PS3 and 360′s stores. Check it out for yourself. It’s just ok, but not that great.

  63. Ivan_PSP:

Sony is the present and future. Microsoft is the pass.
Does Dante’s Inferno is also for PSP nice.

  64. phranctoast:

wtf are you trying to say?

  65. JofaMang:

    @phranc
I think the crack is taking over.

  66. CarlB:

He said he only gets like two hours of sleep a day… give him a break.

  67. CarlB:

Allow me to translate: “Sony has a great past and an excellent future. Microsoft has your passport to a well rounded games machine, the 360. Dante’s Inferno would be nice for PSP as well.”

  68. phranctoast:

    lol @ translation.
