Nintendo: 120 years of gaming and get PS3 content on Xbox 360

December 5, 2009

Nintendo: 120 years of gaming and get PS3 content on Xbox 360 An interesting snippet of the New York Times from the 50s reminds everyone how long Nintendo has been in the gaming business. Also, according to the Xbox Marketplace the PS3 XMB might be coming to the Xbox 360.

In this week’s news round up, I found some interesting tidbits around the Web. On NeoGAF, a user posted a snippet from the New York Times about Nintendo trade-marking the name “Nintendo” in the U.S. back in 1955. According to the article “nintendo” is suppose to mean “a corporation whose fortune or prosperity should be left to the mercy of heaven.”

image

The trademark has been in effect in Japan since 1887. The company was actually founded in 1889. It’s truly amazing to think that Nintendo has been in business for 120 years this year. Maybe heaven is really smiling down on Nintendo.

In other news, Xbox 360 users are annoyed at EA for bringing over content from the PS3 without bothering to change the description. Premium Bad Company 2 themes for purchase on the Marketplace popped up recently with the description directly from the PS3 version.

image

This is the third time it has happened with EA games. It happened just a few months ago when the Xbox 360 version of Need for Speed: Shift attempted to connect to the PSN store. Not too long after, the PS3 manual was put on Xbox 360’s games on demand section for download. It looks like EA and Microsoft may need to inspect content going up on the marketplace a bit more carefully next time.

  1. Ivan_PSP:

Damn and they still stuck in that year. And hopefully Sony would sue Microsoft from COPYCAT.

  2. ToshithegreaT:

“The Halo series has gone on to sell more than 25 million copies worldwide by March 2009[124] and 27 million copies by August 2009″

  3. ToshithegreaT:

    sry wrong board

  4. Roca.:

so much for XBL, the only thing they were missing is having PS3 content on their marketplace. well done

  5. CarlB:

At least dev’s are paying more attention to PSN now (let alone inadvertently providing advertising for Sony)… if they could just get those early server issues fixed instead. Well done.

  6. Ivan_PSP:

    CarlB:
The PSN servers are perfect no problem. And developers have always pay a lot of attention to the PlayStation is the brand that made game awesome.

  7. CarlB:

Right. That’s why I got kicked off and had to log back in last night, because they are so “perfect”.

  8. Ivan_PSP:

    CarlB:
LoL one kick off and your world is ending i guess your Xbox Live world has ended the first day you purchase the problematic empty box.

    Ivan:

lol… one brand and it’s “perfect” I guess your PSN world is highly imaginative.

Christina Lee looks much better with black pantyhose btw.

XBL content… XBox Originals need to have software manuals incorporated like PSOne Classics… Old news I know, but I was playing Suikoden earlier today and was impressed with the option, then saw the full color FFVII manual and loved it, let alone having both the games and manuals available on PSP as well.

  10. SW:

    Sucky Carl.

I get kicked very very rarely (to the point where I can’t remember the last time it happened).

  11. CarlB:

I know, but I just sign back in. Just downloaded Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain… thinking about Silent Hill as well.

  12. Roca.:

if only major AAA 360 exclusive wouldnt have servers issues like L4D2 , Gears 2 and Halo 3…well done

now having PSN content is a step in the right direction

  13. CarlB:

Yes, extreme popularity and excessive traffic tends to bog servers… it is a problem born of the game’s own successes… well done.

Multiplatform game content is not “PSN content”.

So are EA and PS3 users best friends now? ;)

  19. Ivan_PSP:

    CarlB:
You are an obvious Xbox 360 fanboy it keeps showing good luck trying to hide it.

Yeah every Xbox 360 game has major server issues including Xbox Live itself is lagging most of the time and takes a while for some game to work properly… Sony still managers to give the world a free service lag free for their games and very highly reliable again %100 free of charge.

  20. Rhino:

You full of it Ivan, I’ve been kicked from PSN before.

It’s good but it’s not great.

  21. Ivan_PSP:

    Rhino:
Is not great is fantastic we all know that already. I’m full of knowledgeable i know are you a bit mad at that LoL. ImTheRhino

  22. CarlB:

lol… you are definitely full of something Ivan.

  23. CarlB:

“Yeah every Xbox 360 game has major server issues including Xbox Live itself is lagging most of the time and takes a while for some game to work properly…”

That’s what happens when you have a hack 360 Ivan, good luck with that.

  24. CarlB:

“You are an obvious Xbox 360 fanboy it keeps showing good luck trying to hide it.”

Yes, this would explain my love for the God of War series, UC1&2, Infamous, PSOne Classics, my PS2 and PSP, etc. Sorry if I’m able to enjoy, praise and criticize all the consoles I own and am not blinded by your YouTube console “warz”. Go make another video.

*CarlB returns to God of War Collection*

  25. Ivan_PSP:

    CarlB:
I use a non-hack Xbox 360 for Online. And a flashed Xbox 360 doesn’t do anything to server LMFAO. Your love is twisted to favor the Shitbox.

  26. ViRuS:

    @ Ivan

Are you really going to start calling people fanboys?

    You?

Ivan, you are one of the biggest fanboys regestered here.

  27. ViRuS:

So people are getting bent outta shape because it says “PS3″ rather than “xbox 360″.

    LOL

Fuck sake, I wouldn’t give a shit as long as it works.

  28. CarlB:

    “I use a non-hack Xbox 360 for Online.”

Nice Ivan, you have two 360′s, one just for playing it’s online games… looks like you are the one that loves it… lol.

  29. ViRuS:

So Ivan you paid for XBL? I have to say thats surprising.

Don’t you argue that it’s wrong to charge for playing online? I mean I agree with this opinion but it doesn’t seem like you are sticking to your guns.

  30. Rhino:

Just watched the 5 eps of the techbuffalo comparison between the 360 & the PS3, and I gotta say I agree with everything they’ve said.

Damn great and unbiased review. Looking forward to the remainder.

BTW CarlB you are quite the level headed poster. Nice and unbiased and I salute you for it.

  31. RobertCarr316:

    @rhino
Ya they were good reviews the only thing I’m going to have a problem with is when it comes to games cause when it comes to games it’s personal prefrence so I’m a little bit worried about it cause which every console loses that one that loses are going to start calling him a biased fanboy and then it’s ruined

  32. oldschool1987:

@ CarlB: What’s your PSN mate? I got the God of War collection today. Had to get it imported lol. It’s not the same playing the PS2 versions on the PS3, it looks too blurry but this collections looks amazing and it’s another 2 plats for me lol.

My PSN is oldschool1987 if you wanna add me Carl.

  33. Ivan_PSP:

    ViRuS:
I got six months free using Xbox Live card from people that don’t care for it.

Is a huge mess only reason i bother was GTA IV.

    People hate facts LMFAO.

CarlB is a certified Xbot member fully converted and biased to death for Xbox 360. Unlike his delusional mind i give credit when credit needs to be given.

    Sue me for owning this.
    5 PS1
    6 PS2
    3 PS3
    3 Xbox
    2 Xbox 360
    6 PSP
    3 PC
    1 Dreamcast
    0 Nintendo

Soon OnLive. Fanboy my ass unlike many here i own basically everything gaming. I even built my Xbox 360 by buying every add-on Microsoft decided it needed to make to try and let people have fun.

  34. CarlB:

    @Rhino,

Thank you, I appreciate that. What’s your PSN ID and or XBL Gamertag (or you can invite below gamertag/ID if you want)?

    @OS1987,

Invite sent, but for anybody else (you too Ivan):

    MSgtBUSMC on PSN
    USMC MSgt B on XBL

I totally agree on the PS2 versions and God of War Collection… I tried playing both PS2 versions, but it just looked nasty on an HDTV. Collection, while still very blurry and pixelated in cutscenes, is very crisp and clear throughout actual gameplay.

    @Ivan

“Is a huge mess only reason i bother was GTA IV.”

Ivan loves GTAIV DLC on 360 so much he can’t wait for it to come on PS3… Ivan actually bought 360 DLC via XBL and is enjoying it on his 360, amazing.

If they can convert somebody who is as hardcore a Sony fanboy as Ivan, there must at least be 50 million others with lesser convictions. ;)

Ah… so many consoles Ivan, too bad you can only say good things about one brand and only bad things about two others here 99.9% of the time.

“CarlB is a certified Xbot member fully converted and biased to death for Xbox 360.”

Yes, this is why I purchased a PS3, am currently playing God of War Collection (and enjoying it), invited you as a friend on PSN, and got UC1&2 platinums before you, I’m so converted to 360.

You got so mad after I got that first plat before you (and mentioned it on Blorge) that you sent a message to me over PSN back early September that said, “Reason y deleted u Xbox crap” and then blocked me for no other reason. At least Jofa, Barnabe, and Roca are all mature enough to stay friends on PSN, regardless of our differences of personal opinion here.

“Fanboy my ass unlike many here i own basically everything gaming.”

By your list, you seem to only own a slight fraction of gaming. What you do own is extensive enough, unfortunately you can only speak in fanboy terms in favor of Sony (“PSN servers are perfect no problem”) and denigrating 360 (“your Xbox Live world has ended the first day you purchase the problematic empty box”) 99.9% of the time, sprinkled with insults directed towards Nintendo.

  35. JofaMang:

Nintendo insults are like adding cilantro, weird, and totally unnecassary unless you are at an asian restaurant.

  36. SW:

I have to say the line ::

“CarlB is a certified Xbot member fully converted and biased to death for Xbox 360. Unlike his delusional mind i give credit when credit needs to be given.”

    Made me giggle a little, I don’t know why…

  37. Barnabe Jones:

I finally tried out Netflix for PS3. The application itself works really well, and it’s nice to add stuff to your queue from the browser… but the selection of stuff that’s available is very hit or miss.

There’s tons of B-movies from the 80s that no one has heard of. All in all, I’m pretty disappointed.

  38. CarlB:

Ha, Showdown in Little Tokyo was hilarious, especially Dolph Lundgren in his “samurai” outfit complete with headband towards the end. I don’t mind Netflix streaming at all, considering it is a supplement that was added on to the disc service at no extra charge. There are plenty of new TV shows, and relatively new movies (2008-9) to keep one busy between discs in the mail, and the old content really brings back the memories. Great complimentary service at no extra charge to past subscribers, thanks Netflix.

  39. Roca.:

netflix Streaming sucks for ppl like me who have watched almost all the good movies (old and new). wasted of money for me. Netflix mail service is good but why wait on a movie when I can watch new release movies (streamed) online for free.

  40. CarlB:

Well, if you have “watched almost all the good movies (old and new)” and “watch new release movies (streamed) online for free” then any rental service is going to suck for you.

“why wait on a movie when I can watch new release movies (streamed) online for free.”

I don’t know, I guess that’s like asking why pay for new release games if you can download and play them for free.

  41. CarlB:

Except for one thing… you get blu-ray discs through the mail with Netflix, and, at least according to you, this is highly superior to anything that is presently streamed (even HD streaming) and is worth it.

  42. Rhino:

@RobertCarr316: You’re absolutely right. What someone will like a particular game, others wont, so it’ll be interesting to see how they approach that.

Though I must say the review of the CPU’s and GPU’s was awesome and really highlighted the differences between the 2 consoles, their strengths and weaknesses.

@Ivan: “CarlB is a certified Xbot member fully converted and biased to death for Xbox 360″ LOL mate are you serious. You know you and very similar to kev so be careful who you call biased.

And as for your list of consoles…seriously wtf??? What a waste of fucking money to own that many consoles.

“I even built my Xbox 360 by buying every add-on Microsoft decided it needed to make to try and let people have fun.” wow…sounds like something and ‘xbot’ would say.

  43. Ivan_PSP:

    Rhino:
For me is not a waste of money. I love gaming is my dream and hobby.

    CarlB:
Yes i like GTA IV better for Xbox 360 i also have it on PS3. But that’s never enough to switch me exclusive to Xbox 360. I will always be a PlayStation loyal knowledgeable fanatic.

    I love Dreamcast.

I use Netflix for PC only i would never use it on PS3 or Xbox 360.

  44. Rhino:

Hey CarlB, I’ll add you tonight and note I’m from blorge so you know who it’s from.

    Cheers!!

  45. CarlB:

Ivan, I understand… and thanks for the invite on PSN. It sounds like you do actually enjoy 360, good to hear you actually say it here. I loved the Dreamcast also, but saw no real need to keep it this gen. If you ever get a chance, get the free trial of Netflix on 360, the quality (HD streaming) is actually superior to what you get via PC.

@Rhino, sounds good, I’ll be sure to put away the garlic and crucifixes.

  46. CarlB:

“no real need to keep it this gen”

I do miss Code Veronica though…

  47. Roca.:

CarlB: “I don’t know, I guess that’s like asking why pay for new release games if you can download and play them for free”

Tell where I can download PS3 games and play them for free.

“Except for one thing… you get blu-ray discs through the mail with Netflix, and, at least according to you, this is highly superior to anything that is presently streamed (even HD streaming) and is worth it”

Netflix sucks for me either wait, if I like a movie, I buy them on Bluray, I dont rent Bluray movies because I can stream or download them for free (in SD or HD) then if I like them I buy on bluray to get the best quality available. netflix works for you because you a rent guy,but it doesnt work for me.

  48. Ivan_PSP:

I still got Resident Evil: Code Veronica and Silent Hill 2 for Xbox. I still play SEGA Dreamcast a lot, i got so many damn games for that console.

  49. CarlB:

“Tell where I can download PS3 games and play them for free.”

Well, looking at your list on PSN of what you have played or are playing now… it looks like you could download well over half your software via torrents and the like… all your PSP compatible games, all your PS1&2 games (including GoW1&2), and all your multiplatform games, including MW2 (you did say you paid for that right?)

I’m not a pirate of movies or games personally, but it sounds like you already have the movie thing downpat, so maybe you should get together with Ivan and get the dl on how to pirate games as well.

There might be about 8-10 off of your list of 57 that aren’t available yet, but I’m sure it’s only a matter of time.

“Netflix sucks for me either wait, if I like a movie, I buy them on Bluray, I dont rent Bluray movies because I can stream or download them for free (in SD or HD) then if I like them I buy on bluray to get the best quality available. netflix works for you because you a rent guy,but it doesnt work for me.”

Like I said, any rental service would suck for you, given your terms. So where do you stream and download your movies in HD for free?

  50. CarlB:

Btw, you could easily buy a 240hz LED instead of just a 120hz by not buying all those Blu-ray discs of movies you have already seen anyway… just a suggestion. It usually takes about 10 years or more for me to want to watch a movie I really liked the first time, by that time a new and improved format usually hits the market anyway.

  51. ToshithegreaT:

“You’re absolutely right. What someone will like a particular game, others wont, so it’ll be interesting to see how they approach that.

Though I must say the review of the CPU’s and GPU’s was awesome and really highlighted the differences between the 2 consoles, their strengths and weaknesses.”

    @rhino

Lol, ya i found this link by chance, and i also felt that this is an unbiased review and really quite informative, How they acknowledged Uncharted 2 as one of the best looking games, and on the other hand totally proving how Gears of war 2 is quite a feat for xbox’s GPU even with all that limitations..

I also liked how they picked PS3′s cpu over xbox’s cpu, but also pointed that most ppl believe it has 7 cores, which it does not, though xenon has 3..

I know what you and Robert are trying to say, but from now on everything is gonna be mostly abt personal preferences except comparisions abt Live vs Psn, the Ones which mattered (CPU n GPU) have been done for..

  52. me_:

    @ToshithegreaT

I think they make a big deal out of not much. The PS3 has 30 (or so) shaders, the 360 a couple more. The new ATi 5800 has 1,440.

    Bring on the next gen!

  53. CarlB:

Hell yes, I’d buy a next gen box today, but it looks like another year or three at least. Thank goodness awesome games don’t need bleeding edge PC graphics.

  54. Ivan_PSP:

Microsoft might just call it a quit while it can.

  55. Spideydog:

    FFS IVAN ………

  56. Roca.:

“Btw, you could easily buy a 240hz LED instead of just a 120hz by not buying all those Blu-ray discs of movies you have already seen anyway…”

ill be overpaying for the tech if I buy today. the difference between the 2 wont justified paying the extra money for it. im sure 240hz will be cheaper next year considering that there are 600hz Tvs already on the market.

if the price is right next year (black friday deals) I will sell the 120hz one I have now (just like I did with my old 60hz) and I will get the 240hz or 600hz tv.

“Well, looking at your list on PSN of what you have played or are playing now… it looks like you could download well over half your software via torrents and the like… all your PSP compatible games, all your PS1&2 games (including GoW1&2), and all your multiplatform games, including MW2 (you did say you paid for that right?)”

that will mean I would have to mod my systems and I will have to have a modded 360, right? sorry I dont mod or touch anything inside any of my systems. I rather not take the risk, plus im like owning all my content including movies. I made the mistake of modding a psp long time ago and that was a pita. thanks god I was able to sell it and get one of the newer ones.

“There might be about 8-10 off of your list of 57 that aren’t available yet, but I’m sure it’s only a matter of time.”

trust me, it is more than 8-10. you can only see the game with trophies. it is 24 discs based game in total that I will not find it anywhere else and thats not including all the PSN games.

  57. oldschool1987:

Did anyone else fancy Claire Redfield when Code Veronica 1st came out? Lmao. Then again I was about 13 I think so I fancied anything lol.

  58. CarlB:

“that will mean I would have to mod my systems and I will have to have a modded 360, right?”

No, you just have to have a pc.

“plus im like owning all my content including movies.”

So what are you talking about streaming and downloading SD and HD movies for free for? This is like renting, except you are stealing.

So it’s more than 8-10, you can still get well over half that list that you paid for (includeing MW) elsewhere. I wouldn’t do it, but I still don’t see the moral difference here between games and movies here… maybe one is just more convenient for you to do.

    OS1987,

    Yes. Her eyes blinked… lol.

  59. Roca.:

CarlB: “So what are you talking about streaming and downloading SD and HD movies for free for? This is like renting, except you are stealing.”

I watch them first (movie theater or download/stream on PC) then if I like them I buy them. my DVD collection is insane, and my BD collection is starting to get bigger. and it is just like “renting” the only difference is that I can find all the movies available on the web while on netflix streaming your options are very limited.

CarlB: “So it’s more than 8-10, you can still get well over half that list that you paid for (includeing MW) elsewhere. I wouldn’t do it, but I still don’t see the moral difference here between games and movies here… maybe one is just more convenient for you to do”

my PC is crap and Im not a die hard PC gamer. I was planning to get a better PC this holiday but my budget went down a lil because of my new LED TV and new HDTV stand, a new wireless N router, a Bigger DVD shelf for all my movies and games and a bunch of christmass gift. I will be getting a new PC when I get my Tax return so i will be able to play L4D 1&2, Alan Wake and SC: Conviction.

Higher framerate through interpolation is kind of a gimmick imo, until the devices that provide video can feed higher true framerates, the cost of the tech is not worth the result. Interpolation is a trick, not true video. From my understanding, the current TVs that offer more than 60hz cannot truely display more than a 60hz feed. Even if you could give it 120 fps feed to a 120hz TV, it only uses 60hz, and interpolates every second frame.

Current 120hz + TVs for the most part, unless 3d enabled and thusly even more expensive (due to duo video processers, one for each “eye”, not much out there than can even use this feature yet) are wasted tech. I am all in favour of early adoption, but not when it is falsely advertized as something it is not. Calling a 120hz+ TV without the provizo that it is achieved through interpolation, is like claiming an upscaled DVD to be native 1080p. The end result might be raw data that matches the description, but the true process shows a limitation that cannot be overcome.

    Interesting series.

2 – 2 at the end so far tho…..and even with the CPU battle they finish saying Cell has it by only a “slight edge”.

    Mountains and molehills. Again.
Meanwhile the Xbox owners are laughing all the way to the bank.

Don’t you find that Physical meadia is such a pain and a waste of space? Sure you watch the movie but then it just sits there until the day you decide you want to watch it again. For me that is like 2 years before I’ll go back and watch it again. I remember when my car had CD’s all over the place. Now all my music is digital and my car is CD Free. Even though I’m getting a Bluray player in my new Laptop I was thinking when am I ever going to watch a Bluray movie. I don’t buy movies and the rental store does not see me. Everything is On Demand either through my Cable Provider or the 360. And the 1080P streaming works great on the 360. I watch 2 movies through the streaming service on Zune Marketplace one in HD and one in SD and they were both great. Bluray, as nice as it looks just isn’t worth the time for me.

  63. Roca.:

the difference look to be minor on paper. but on the screen I think we all know which console has been putting the best visuals.

who is laughing now..you can’t still think about a game that looks better the KZ2 or U2

  64. Roca.:

CAD: “And the 1080P streaming works great on the 360.”

    is that free?

CAD: “Even though I’m getting a Bluray player in my new Laptop I was thinking when am I ever going to watch a Bluray movie.”

    how big is the monitor?

CAD: “Bluray, as nice as it looks just isn’t worth the time for me.”

your are a digital guy and I am a guy who likes to physically own my stuff. and owning a digital copy of a HD movies in a PITA. they files are 8GB+.

I have many friends and family who visit me frequently, I like the ease of taking my movies anywhere I want to and start watching them with no problem. Most BD movies now days comes with the Digital copy of the movies…so no worries there

  65. CAD:

“CAD: “And the 1080P streaming works great on the 360.”

CAD: “Even though I’m getting a Bluray player in my new Laptop I was thinking when am I ever going to watch a Bluray movie.”

Of course it’s not free. Movies are for rental on the 360 just like the PS3 you know. As for the Monitor it’s 17″ but I will use the HDMI to hook it to the HDTV. My probelm is that Physical media takes up space and therefore Digital just makes more sense. An External Hard Drive will hold plenty of movies and I don’t need a wall unit for that.

  66. Roca.:

“Of course it’s not free. Movies are for rental on the 360 just like the PS3 you know”

are they cheaper then what the 360 use to offer? (rent/purchase movies)….besides streaming it what is special about it?

“An External Hard Drive will hold plenty of movies and I don’t need a wall unit for that”

like I said, most BD movies comes with the digital copy of the movie too. I kill two birds with one shot that way. did you buy GTA: L&D and Gay tone on Demand or the retail version?

  67. CarlB:

Well Jofa, at least in the case of the Samsung 8500, it seems to be more a sum of it’s total features rather than just 240hz alone (in fact CNET even said the benefits of that seem “difficult to discern” though they rated it the best available picture at this time). Only plasma’s go to 600hz, so that’s another bag as well roca. I was personally impressed with this one after I read the review (top choice for best HDTV on CNET right now) and then seeing it was available for a little over half of what they had it listed on their site when going through Amazon instead of their sellers… though it’s still a bit pricey at $2500+

    http://reviews.cnet.com/best-high-definition-tvs/?tag=leftColumnArea1.0

Considering I will probably get a room in the barracks, I think the 240hz LED LG 42/47LH90 HDTV starting @ $1300 from Amazon (I also get free shipping and no taxes) is more up my alley, and is also on the best HDTV list on CNET.

are they cheaper then what the 360 use to offer? (rent/purchase movies)….besides streaming it what is special about it?

There is nothing special about it just like there is nothing special about Bluray. No matter how you want to look at it boils down to a Movie. I don’t care if it’s on DVD, Bluray, Digital it’s the same offer. Sure Bluray offers surpurb visuals but it’s the same movie. As for the Price it’s the same as my Cable Provider’s On Demand.

As for GTA I bought both digital.

  69. JofaMang:

I am waiting to upgrade my LCD for several reasons:
-My 60hz Aquos 42″ 1080p LCD is great and isn’t broken
-I don’t have a device with delivers higher than 60hz Video feed, aside from my computer, which has its own monitor and only gets hooked up to the TV for shits and gigles
-A true 120hz screen to work with an aformentioned true 120hz feeding device.

  70. Roca.:

“Only plasma’s go to 600hz, so that’s another bag as well roca.”

Plasma also started the 240hz. plasma usually is the first TV model to have higher “Hz” then the other models start doing the same.

what i was trying to say its 240 is a bit pricy right now, HDTVs can easily drop a Grand in 6 months to a year. and the difference between 240hz and 120hz is not worth paying the extra money. That is just my opinion but at the end it is your choice and your money. I could’ve gotten a 240hz on black friday but an extra $1000-1600 for it is a bit too much.

  71. Roca.:

“As for GTA I bought both digital”

so what happens after your done with it? you cant sell it back, you cant put on ebay or give it as a gift, you cant let a friend barrow it. you cant take it to a friends house and start playing without loading your profile into his system and take time to download both games.

  72. JofaMang:

I used to be a collectionist when it came to games, but that was before I became a trophy whore. I prefer physical media, as I can get some return on the titles I am done with and don’t desire for my collection, like how Heavenly sword, Demon’s Souls, KZ2, U1&2 and Fallout 3 have permanent slots on my shelf.

If I paid for digital versions of the games I didn’t care to keep, then I would have no avenue for reclaiming some of the cost. If digital copies were half the cost of phsyical media, that would bridge the gap for me, but they are whores when it comes to pricing digital copies. Without a distribution network and all the fingers in the pies of physical media sales, you would think they could drop the digital copy price a bit, but the games stores would probably shit a brick if this was the case.

  73. Happyhockum:

Sure you can it’s called a memory card or I take my Hard Drive off and bring it with me. But no I cannot sell it. But were talking Video Games nows. That is completely different form Music/Movies.

  75. CAD:

Remember I only paid $20 for each game so it’s better then buying a full blown Retail disk for $60+

  76. me_:

“Plasma also started the 240hz. plasma usually is the first TV model to have higher “Hz” then the other models start doing the same.”

Cars usually get the higher “mph” and then the horses start doing the same.

They’re different technology Roca. You should listen to the people here and you could learn something.

I got a 200Hz Samsung series 7 for my parents about six months ago. I don’t know if the 200Hz made much difference but the picture quality was noticeably improved over the series 6.

  77. Happyhockum:

    Oh dear,
    who expected this so soon?
Some big TV shows previously on Blu-ray video are rolling back to DVD-only releases.

Can you say ‘niche product’ that ‘stands no chance in hell of being the next DVD’ –

“Several TV shows that had upgraded to Blu-ray Disc have shifted back to standard-definition DVD-only releases, indicating hurdles in the adoption of the category.

Series whose latest seasons are being released only on standard DVD, though previous seasons got Blu-ray treatment, include Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s Rescue Me and Damages and Warner Home Video’s Nip/Tuck.

Studios and retailers note that consumers have been relatively slow to embrace the overall TV on Blu-ray genre. To date, the average TV title streeting in standard and high-def sells just 5% of its copies on Blu-ray, sources said.”

When it comes to the technology he insists on spouting off about you’ll soon and quickly find that Roca knows a laughably pathetic amount of nothing about it.

It’s like when you ask one of those young straight out of school sales guys guy at a large CE chain store about their a/v products.
You already read the 2 line label but they just parrot it back at you and clearly have no understanding of the unit or the tech it offers.

Roca’s the moron who tried to tell us that……

    - “Optical cable is as good as there is for Audio output”

    - HDMI is great cos it allows you to use an optical audio link

    - A self-selecting and completely unverified survey is as “accurate” as warranty data from an insurance company.

This is the level of fanboy ignorance you are dealing with when engaging with Roca, consider yourself warned.

  79. CarlB:

“what i was trying to say its 240 is a bit pricy right now”

Actually I think that top rated 240hz I mentioned earlier, the 40hz LED LG 42/47LH90 HDTV starting @ $1300 (I seriously doubt this will drop a grand in a year, but I could be wrong) from Amazon is very reasonable for what you get, and it is only a few hundred more if you want to upsize to 47″ and the same from there to the 55″… I’m not sure what you are getting, “but at the end it is your choice and your money.”

    (price in cart $1300): amazon.com/LG-42LH90-42-Inch-Backlit-Infused/dp/B00298Y8U4/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=IVDII6AMB4F1H&colid=3CBUXA8WOO0D9

Between this and the Samsung UNB8000 series, it looks to be about the best bang for the buck if you are in the market for an LED HDTV.

Could you link to the 120hz LED HDTV you are getting?

  80. Akaro:

I have a question. The other day I was at the mall, checking TV sets and the like. There I saw this ~60″ 120HZ LED screen (don´t remember the brand). It was showing the GI Joe movie on BD. For some reason the movie looked fake, very very fake, as a low budget movie. CG was too obvious and the action scenes moved with some strange quickness. I don´t remember that from the cinema (I watched it at an Imax screen). On the other hand all animated CG movies looked amazing.

What happened there? Did the people from the store messed up the settings of THAT screen? Or that has something to do with what CAD [x]or Jofa were saying about 120 Hz and beyond?

  81. Happyhockum:

    Akaro

TV stores are famous for having staff that either do not know how to set up their display TVs properly or do not care about it or are so deadened by the whole conveyor system of new models every fortnight that they have stopped seeing it.

How else can anyone rationalise the dreadful displays they put out?
One TV can look great and next to it is one that looks like a module has blown the image is so bad.

Many TVs now ship with the settings all wrong for use in the home (and I’d love a look at the settings used by so many who claim to be ‘into’ HD and Blu-ray et al.
I bet most have never heard of ISF calibration…..just like the know-nothing w@nkers who rave on about lossless audio and who have an audio set-up with speakers barely able to reproduce dolby digital @ 320kbpsw satisfactorily).

    Anyways.

Brightness & contrast are always set way to high (you’ll find some HD TVs have a actual ‘display mode’ you need to go into the menu system and turn off).
The idea is to make them stand out next to their competitors….sadly it often just makes them look very artificial and terrible.

  82. Akaro:

I get it, thanks for the response HH.

“The idea is to make them stand out next to their competitors….sadly it often just makes them look very artificial and terrible.”

Indeed, the first thing that comes to mind is: “Months of salary for THIS? Nah, I´ll pass”.

  83. Happyhockum:

    Akaro

Well fair enough, I can understand your POV but on the otherhand a properly calibrated TV can look the total business.

TBH a regular TV/electricval goods store is rarely going to be a good place to go to look over a TV properly.
It’s like the difference between using one of those stores or going to a hi-fi specialist for your audio kit.

Personally I just use them to buy a unit I already know about and am trying to get a great deal on.
Once it’s out of their hands I then get into setting it up properly etc etc.
They are hopeless for all that but they can chop prices….sadly the flip side of that is the death of the specialist shop that does know what they are doing/talking about (and not forgetting that they can repair stuff properly too).

ISF calibration is expensive……but if you’re going to fork out $1500 – $2000+ on a decent HD TV whats another $300 – $500 (depending on the service provided).

I’ve known several people have this done and although they all worried about the initial expense every one of them thought the difference was very visible and well worth doing.

    You pays your money…….

  84. Akaro:

Well, thanks for the information. I have yet to make the jump to HD. It is appealing to me but I want to do it with as much knowledge as possible and I didn´t know anything about ISF calibration, so now I have something to look for =). I can say that the latter is unheard of in México and probably most people here use their new TV´s out of the box.

  85. Happyhockum:

    Akaro

“most people here use their new TV´s out of the box”

Sadly I think that’s true of many if not actually most consumers in most places.

  86. Roca.:

Me: “They’re different technology Roca. You should listen to the people here and you could learn something.”

i know there are different tech (Plasma sucked), I was just trying to tell CalrB that there will be LCD/LED TVs with over 240 Hz. plasma are the first ones with 600hz.

    @HH
making shut up again. you must be out of straws
if you dont know what we were taking about then shut the hell up.

“U2 is not the best looking game” – HH
-ppl aksed him for his opinion on the best looking game
……..HH ran away. ppl are still waiting for an answer… HH keeps evading the subject.
    End of story.

    Akaro

you are right, the 120Hz makes the CG scenes look completely fake. it is ridiculous. I will say to stick with the regural 60hz for movies (as Jofa said) but for gaming the 120hz doesnt look that bad.

    @CarLB

“Actually I think that top rated 240hz I mentioned earlier, the 40hz LED LG 42/47LH90 HDTV starting @ $1300 (I seriously doubt this will drop a grand in a year, but I could be wrong)”

thats actually a good price. I was talking about the other u linked before the $3,000-$4,000 Samsung (5 million contrast ration) that was a bit expensive and could get a insane price drop by next year. the LG one is a steal though :)

  87. Roca.:

look at HH backing up Me_ when he clearly misunderstood me.

    haha pathetic as always

  88. Happyhockum:

Yeah, way to go Roca, post some of your typically snide comments loing after everyone has gone.

You really are a gormless pathetic tw@t.
