Assassin’s Creed II review controversy – and I thought it was all subjective
Writing about video games can be very tricky. You’re never going to please everyone and gamers are notoriously robust and ready to force-feed their own opinion back to you, whether you’ve asked them to or not. Which is fair enough. However, should someone be ripped from limb to limb (in a metaphorical sense at least) for giving a poor review to a game?
The answer is, of course, no. The whole point of games reviews is they are subjective, based on one person’s view of a game. So long as that person has played through the game and taken an objective look at it then their review and the score at the end is an honest appraisal of the game. But try telling that to fans of the game in question when it is given a bad score.
Assassin’s Creed II has gained generally favorable reviews, with a 91 average score currently on Metacritic. However, alongside all the perfect scores and near-perfect scores, is a 4.5/10 from Jim Sterling at Destructoid. That does indeed seem out of keeping with the opinions of every other games reviewer.
However, Sterling is entitled to his opinion, and 4.5/10 is his opinion. Reading his review shows his problems with the game, spelled out for all to see. But I can’t help wondering whether those criticizing him just looked at the score and made a judgment call based on that.

I went to read the review but stopped here ::
‘Assassin’s Creed 2′s plot is just as contrived as the last one’
Yes, because all video game plots are based firmly in reality now aren’t they…

LOL @SW oh well he is entitled to his opinion.
It is possible that some reviewers are just so excited about a title that they are happy to overlook some things and award it with a good score.
EG KZ2, I thought it was very good, the graphics were pretty sweet, the AI was good, but overall it left me feeling very….meh. I didn’t think it deserved the score it got.
The same can be said for movies and music.

Destructoid likes to go against the norm. Remember, they’re the ones that played the Forza 3 and GT5 demo and gave the visuals nod to Forza 3. Anything to cause a bit of controversy.

I read Destructoid for about a week before I got sick of it. Basically they try to be different for the sake of being different. And you’re right, it’s all about getting clicks and exposure.
IMO AC2 is at the very least a 9/10. I’m not even going to bother reading his review because he is obviously wrong. I’m not giving the site the clicks they are so desperately looking for.
