Microsoft working on an even newer – New Xbox Experience dashboard?
While the wet paint on the New Xbox Experience (NXE) is still drying, it looks like Microsoft may be working on an even newer dashboard update. Over the years many of Microsoft’s plans have been leaked out via job postings and this could be another case.
Existence of a new Halo game and a glimmer of Natal was leaked out a long time ago via a job postings. Superannuation was able to find a Linkedin account of a recently hired developer to work on “the Xbox 360 dashboard†with no mention of the NXE. The developer was hired in November as a user interface animator for the Xbox 360 dashboard development.
Superannuation speculates that this may be a redesign for Natal, which is an interesting and plausible point. The only question is – are Xbox 360 owners ready for a new dashboard redesign already? The only thing I ask for is that Microsoft not implement Silverlight ads into the dashboard, besides that the dashboard is fine the way it is.

I didn’t mind the old dashboard. The new one is nice, but I don’t see the need for a new one, unless it’s going to enhance Natal in some way.
December 8th, 2009
Yeah, I personally thought the old one was the best. It just had a cool feeling to it.
December 8th, 2009
As long as it doesn’t break any functionality, or swamp the user in ads, then redesigns are a good thing.
December 8th, 2009
I’m with Harry on this. As long as it is some kind of enhancement for Natal I would not mind either. But didn’t Microsoft say something about Avtar Spaces. Something like PSN Home.
December 8th, 2009
Well after Sony outlined their online strategy with the slideshow Roca was showing us, I can’t say I’m surprised MS is doing something “New”. It will probably also come out first somehow and be considered “innovative”.
**bows and accepts his award.**

Old Xbox 360 main menu SUCK they need one that’s not bloated and confusing plus really ugly. Xross Media Bar is perfect they should license that from Sony is the best.
December 8th, 2009
Go on then Ivan, what exactly is “bloated” about XBL?
What exactly is confusing you?
XBL’s designed so a young child can use it but you find it confusing, how does that work?
As for “ugly” well we all know that that’s only because it’s a Microsoft product (same as your idiotic bloated comment is something you picked up about their Vista OS).
If it was sh!te smeared on a stick you’d claim it was ‘awesome’ if it has a Sony/PS3 badge nailed to it.
Personally I thought the old one & the new one are ok, it’s just a labelling system.
Hopefully any new version will bring some useful new functionality.

The year the 360 vanish in Japan
http://m.kotaku.com/site?sid=kotaku&pid=JuicerHub&targetUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fkotaku.com%2F5421351%2F2009-the-year-the-xbox-360-practically-vanished-in-japan%3Fop%3Dpost%26refId%3D5421351
December 8th, 2009
The PS3 consistently outsells the 360 in Japan by at least 100K units. The North America sales experienced by the 360 this year get virtually erased due to that.
oh.. and here come FF13. The figurative nail in the 360′s Japanese coffin.
December 8th, 2009
Microsoft does need to improve their interface. The lay out of their interface can definetely be better.
December 8th, 2009
LoL @ phranc
December 8th, 2009
What is wrong with the way the interface is now. I like it and I find it informative, colourful, Fun, and easy to Navigate. There is nothing wrong with it. Only people who don’t own the console would say something so stupid.
December 8th, 2009
The current dashboard is easy to navigate, and looks fine too.
I think only blind people would stuggle to navigate through it. tbh
December 8th, 2009
“The figurative nail in the 360’s Japanese coffin.”
There is a market in Japan? …lol.
December 8th, 2009
not for the 360.
December 8th, 2009
phranctoast:
Nice one you so right. Microsoft needs to stop wasting time selling Xbox 360 in unwanted enemies territory.
And yes we all hate the Xbox 360 ugly bloated confusing terrible main menu/interface. Microsoft needs something like the PS3 easy to use not bloated and looks stylish and very professional.
December 8th, 2009
@Ivan.
please don’t agree with me
December 8th, 2009
Carl B,
Nobody buys the 360 in japan? Good.
I hate having to listen to all that foriegn jibberish online.
December 8th, 2009
LOL I agree. I ran into some Japs late one night a long time ago on some racing title and it was highly annoying.
December 8th, 2009
The southerners piss me off. They all sound like Ricky Bobby and are racist as hell. Woohooo mute all!!!!!
December 8th, 2009
I have little patience for foriegners online, I’m maybe racist that way.
I wanna gouge out my eyes when I hear people speaking french on XBL. Of course thats not their fault and they have every right to speak in their mother tongue. It’s just a little irritating is all.
They probably feel the same way about those speaking english/spanish/german.
December 8th, 2009
Phranc,
It’s all the swearing/racism/homophobia/sectarianism online that pisses me off. People are enabled to act like morons because they are annonymous.
I have to say though, I’ve only came across about 4 moronic cretins from the USA online in about 2 years of playing XBL.
I’ve been fairly lucky.
December 8th, 2009
Yeah, i lost count of how many times I was called a “chink motherfucker” or something of the like by southern assholes in PS2 Socoms, because they think my name is Asian. These are the same guys who brag about joining the army when they turn 18 to kill ragheads. I usually responded with telling them to go back to running moonshine and fucking their sisters. I had a fair amount of boots in socom, hah.
@CAD
While i agree that not being able to understand another language can be frustrating, your derogatory use of the word Japs (instead of calling them Japanese) is definitely a racist way of talking about it. Check yourself before you continue to accuse anyone of the same.
December 8th, 2009
The early NPD estimates are coming in.
If they are right (and these guys are not usually a million miles out) then it turns out that the big PS3 sales some were crowing about were almost matched by the Xbox 360.
Almost.
Despite the new PS3 slim, the PS3 slim’s price-cut , the supposedly incredibly ‘better’ PS3 games & the PS3 bundling it appears the gap between the 2 consoles was between 25k & 50k on the month of Nov.
The PS3 slim bounce is almost gone.
phranctoast
Nobody cares about Japan.
It always was, is and will be an odd-ball place due to the nationality & location of so many of the worlds CE corps today.
Europe is the world’s single largest market (and by Europe I mean EU Europe, not ‘Europe which incorporates the globe’s entire PAL TV user base’
) followed by the USA.
In both those territories Xbox is nicely ahead.
December 8th, 2009
Sorry I just want to savour that moment again.
Ivan finds XBL confusing.
ROFLMFAO, PMSL etc etc
Oh dear Ivan, oh dear oh dear.
December 8th, 2009
Happy,
why dont you make tell me EU and US have brought or offered to gaming vs Japan’s. then we will see if Japan is important of not.
December 8th, 2009
@happy.
And if past trends continue both consoles will see double the sales for December as opposed to November.
Say what you will about Japan. Their numbers are increasing the overall PS3 numbers.
Microsoft certainly cared or there would be no JRPG’s on the 360.
December 8th, 2009
NEW PS3 UPDATE.
http://www.playstationuniversity.com/ps3-firmware-3-15-this-week-1631/2/
December 8th, 2009
Oh I said Japs!! So waht, that does not make me racist!! Jofa just relax. I thought Xboxt was a derogatory term. Who’s racist now Ha!
December 8th, 2009
phranctoast
That’s true but you did make the point that Japan would erase the advantage the US numbers bring to Xbox, I’m just pointing out that Xbox has Europe too (as in real EU Europe, not that laughable all PAL territories Sony pretends is Europe) and that with that being the case the rising PS3 sales in Japan cannot do much more than help reode the Xbox advantage, they certainly do not erase it.
(……and that is only for as long as PS3 sales do hold up in Japan, they have risen and fallen there like a brides nighty over the last couple of years)
December 8th, 2009
do you have the total install base for both console in EU? if not your making a pretty wild claim
December 8th, 2009
I know Sony have to rake up every PAL country to try and make it even look competitive.
December 8th, 2009
Which shouldn’t be odd as the 360 was out worldwide for 18 months longer in those same territories, but I forgot…that doesn’t make any difference.
I guess until we see some honest EU numbers it’s a crap shoot.
The advantage the lower priced 360′s with boosting NA and EU (primarily UK) numbers up is over with the competitive slim.
Checking the slims early numbers in 2010 vs the 360′s in early 2009 should be a good way to determine that.
December 8th, 2009
@ Roca,
I quite like the idea of being able to transfer data between PS3′s.
I don’t think that can be achieved on the 360, right?
Seems like a pretty good time saver.
December 8th, 2009
Phranctoast
That remains to be seen.
I expect we’ll see a new & further Xbox price cut as the 120gb Elite slides into the pricing point that the old 60gb model held or perhaps just below.
In the UK (taking account of the 2 game & controller bundle) that is about where they are right now, no wonder UK Xbox sales are up so strongly.
December 8th, 2009
MS included the middle east and Africa. lmaoooo
December 8th, 2009
ViRuS
How do you mean?
Of course you can transfer data between Xboxes.
I’m currently awaiting my data transfer cable to shift my stuff from my Elite’s 120gb hard drive to my new Super Elite’s 250gb HDD.
You always could use memory cards too (but with so much data a 250mb card would take too much time for me to be ar$ed).
December 8th, 2009
Roca
Maybe they do……but at least they are up front & open about it.
Unlike your heros.
Sony meanwhile scrapes together every PAL territory and pretends it’s ‘Europe’.
LMAO indeed.
December 8th, 2009
HH,
Im still waiting on those numbers for your claim
“I’m just pointing out that Xbox has Europe too”
or you are going to ran away from it like you do everytime we ask you to name a game on the 360 that looks better than Uncharted 2 (because you said that you think U2 is not the best looking game)
December 8th, 2009
I know Patcher has said he expects a 360 price drop. Unless the 360 is getting soundly beat I really don’t expect much if a cut.
Maybe they’ll do the earlier ps3 type “price cut” where they offer more for the same price without lowering the price.
I don’t see the $199 360 price dropping anytime soon.
I think what we’re starting to see is 360 users also buying a ps3.
The 360′s next push will probably occur with the ripoff device Natal.
December 8th, 2009
HH:”Sony meanwhile scrapes together every PAL territory and pretends it’s ‘Europe’”
again you are making shit up (as usual)
show me that again please. as I recall Sony only showed a Presentation Slice stating:
“SCEE installed base 10 million” – GamesCom 2009: Sony Press Conference
http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gamescom-2009-sony-press-conference/2255210/
December 8th, 2009
SCEE Licensed Territories
http://www.scee.presscentre.com/territories.asp
which is pretty much Africa and Europe.
im still waiting for your numbers though.
December 8th, 2009
Roca
Here’s the last solid data I have from Jan 2009 – and seeing as PS3 has had a cr@p year until the end of Sept 09 (which Xbox countered with great bundles) it is safe to say that the gap either widened (which is the more likely outcome for Xbox) or stayed similar (at best for PS3).
“Xbox today revealed sales data showing Christmas 2008 was the biggest sales period ever in the brand’s six-year European history, with sales of Xbox 360 almost double those of Christmas 2007[1]. Eight million Xbox 360 consoles have been sold in Europe, the Middle East and Africa up to the end of 2008, widening its lead over PlayStation 3 in the region to more than one million and setting the scene for further growth in 2009″
Source GFK ChartTrack data
http://ve3tro.com/1772/xbox-360-8-million-consoles-sold-to-date-in-europe/
Read it and weep fanboy.
Now what?
Tw@t.
December 8th, 2009
Go ahead and show 2 million+ PS3 sales in 2009 in those territories.
Any time, I’ll be waiting.
December 8th, 2009
Or will you “run away”?
LMAO
December 8th, 2009
“why dont you make tell me EU and US have brought or offered to gaming vs Japan’s.”
Japan’s JRPG’s are good. Used to be they ruled the roost a decade ago, not so nowadays… but we were talking about regional marketshare comparisons not development.
December 8th, 2009
lmaooo..
last time I check, Sony said “SCEE install base = 10M”
SCEE territories (EU & Africa) is linked below
http://www.scee.presscentre.com/territories.asp
two month later MS (Chris Lewis) said “they have just reach the 10M benchmark for EU, Africa and the Middle East”
but if you want to trust an old article which doesnt provide its source of where got those numbers…then good for you.
December 8th, 2009
Roca
Pathetic, but only what I expected.
You thought you were on to a good jape there and you got cut off at the knees.
Hilarious.
December 8th, 2009
Oh and GFK ChartTrack data is a respected source here.
Tough t!tty if you know nothing about them.
December 8th, 2009
Japanese companies have said they are behind the times when it comes to game development in comparison to Western game companies.
While they say that, you still see some damn good games coming from them
Atlus.
From Software
Konami
Capcom
SE
Tecmo
to name a few that stay at the top of their game.
I think Japans handheld market if anything is holding them back on hitting their full stride with graphical advancement.
December 8th, 2009
“Japan’s JRPG’s are good. Used to be they ruled the roost a decade ago, not so nowadays”
its not just RPGs or JRPGs. the brought us
platformer – Mario, Donkey Kong, Bionic Commando, Sonic
Horror Survival – Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Fatal Frame , Clock Tower
Fighting and Beat’em ups – Final Fight, Street Figher, Golden Axe, Double Dragon, Tekken and Virtua Fighter
Action and Adventure games – Metroid, Metal Gear Solid,
Racing – Gran Turismo, F-Zero, Mario Kart
RPGs – Zelda, Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, Monster Hunter, Xenosaga,
they brought us also the first MMO and the first Successful Driving Sim game
December 8th, 2009
HH,
old news doesnt prove shit. the two recent statements from both companies show alot more.
December 8th, 2009
Roca
It’s no “old news”, it’s trade data but unfortunately for you it just conflicts with your usual fanboy outlook.
Typical of this is your reflex fall back on comparing apples to oranges.
We already did the ‘what Sony mean when they say Europe and it ain’t the same as Microsof’ bit.
Idiot.
December 8th, 2009
Yes roca, all that was about a decade ago or longer, and we’ve seen some great sequels to those formulas since, with rare exception. Understand I did not say they contribute nothing, just that they are no longer the king of the hill now.
December 8th, 2009
Happy. Just stop. We all know that anything less than praise for Sony and false admission that they created, perfected, and currently rule the world of gaming just will not do.
December 8th, 2009
“Yes roca, all that was about a decade ago or longer”
what im trying to say is that most game now days come from all the gem from a “decade ago”.
December 8th, 2009
HH,
then go tell Chris Lewis (same guy from your article) that he was wrong when he said MS has reach the 10 mark in EU, Africa and Middle East. tell him you have better stats
either way if Chris Lewis is wrong now, then why couldnt he be wrong back then when they wrote the article you posted, because he claimed those numbers on your article and he ALSO claimed the 10M numbers for EU, Africa and the Middle East
Im guessing you are choosing his old statement because it is in the 360′s favor.
December 8th, 2009
At no point should anyone at any point be thumbing their nose in Japans direction. They are responsible for the greats, but those same developers will openly admit that they are taking the back seat in the graphics department to Western developers. Like I said before. The handheld market and the MMO market is so big there and they require so much less graphical advancements. They stick to what the people over there buy.

Cad,
That you would consider Japs an ok term, and try to throw Xbot in with words like nigger, chink, spic, wetback, hebe, etc, is very laughable, and very indicative of your over all tolerance and moral fibre.
Go read your bible some more, you need to.

Funny I feel the same way about consoles holding back PC gaming.
December 8th, 2009
“what im trying to say is that most game now days come from all the gem from a ‘decade ago’.”
That’s a much better statement considering it doesn’t isolate one region. I would say video game history is much more evolutionary than some would like to believe who just stepped in during the PS1/2 era. But I do agree with the statement I quoted above, just as most games back then came from those a decade before that, etc. Not to mention what computer games have contributed. No one region is solely responsible (or even has the reigning majority of responsibility) for today’s games, each one has borrowed from those that have gone before, both in computers and home consoles… Nintendo did it, Sega did it, Sony did it, etc. They were created in America and have evolved steadily over time since then, while the media as a whole is still in its infancy compared to film. In other words, we haven’t even glimpsed a fraction of what is possible yet, and everybody will contribute substantially.
December 8th, 2009
Not that bothered about a new dashboard. Most updates have usually been very positive.
December 9th, 2009
“southern assholes running moonshine and fucking their sisters.”
“The southerners piss me off. They all sound like Ricky Bobby and are racist as hell”
Stereotypical BS.. I have lived in quite a few states north and south. The North is just as bad. Hell Seattle or should I say Washington is the number one serial killer producer in the country. Must be something in the water?? Now where did my cousin with no teeth and three nipples run off to? YEE-HAW
December 9th, 2009
9 times out of 10, when there is excedingly racist and derogatory comments in socom, it was being done by a dude with a deep southern accent. 1 out 10 times it is a high pitched pre-pubescent male from god knows where, they all sound the same at that age when rifling out profanities.

That’s about as funny as your ‘I bought a Vaio with a standard fit 500gb SSD in June 09′ lie.
December 9th, 2009
Oh, and answer the question Ivan –
Just how desperately sad and laughably pathetic do you have to be to make ridiculous and obviously false claims about the kit you own on an anonymous messageboard to people, most if not all of whom, you’ll never really meet or know?

In his own mind at least.

Testify PS3 brother!
Testify for the Lord thy God Sony!

Sad but true harry, sad but so very true.
December 10th, 2009
Indeed. Hey my friend request is still pending with you on Xbox Live too.
December 10th, 2009
Xbots still here only Microsoft and Nintendo care about just money Sony has proven it cares about everything especially gaming.
December 10th, 2009
harry
I haven’t been near my Xbox for a while (as you’ve noticed).
As I mentioned to you before there’s just too many household things happening right now (still on-going).
Add in the meetings, dinners, parties and all the rest that goes on at this time of year – and I will admit that I’ve also been lazy with it & letting it be until the transfer kit comes.
Sorry harry, I will get it done soon.
Ivan
Seek help.
December 10th, 2009

Yeah right, attempts at wisdom from the idiot who said here quite openly that he found XBL confusing.
Like anything you say is worth so much as a fart.
December 11th, 2009
Xbox Live is a joke just like your are.
December 11th, 2009
No Ivan,
unfortunately for you the big joke right here
(for all to see)
is that you yourself said it openly just up the pages here that you find XBL confusing.
Ha ha ha ha.
December 11th, 2009
Jokes a joke Xbox Live is ajoke
December 11th, 2009
How would you know Ivan, you find it confusing?
December 11th, 2009
“It’s a shame Sony (and MS) only care about our wallets.”
Actually Harry, I think it works out well for gamers in general that the big corporations, including Nintendo and Apple, only care about our wallets. It drives competition, price wars, and quality (even in the casual arena). Yes, there will be some losses and major changes, but there will also be major gains. In the end, we still benefit with the top exclusives that interest us on each platform, including handhelds, cell, and pc, and prices that decrease with time. Useful/fun features (achievements, online demos, netflix, apps, cross-game chat, etc.) are copied and retained to our benefit as well.
December 11th, 2009
LoL
December 11th, 2009
@carlb..
I believe what harry was going for was, with Ivan’s dedication to Sony….It’s a shame they only care about our wallets.
It was a nice paragraph though
December 11th, 2009
phranc, I noticed that as well… I just feel differently about both companies. Thanks for the compliment though
