Quadriplegic Call Of Duty gamer seeks custom controller button mapping
Those of us who are able-bodied take so many things for granted it isn’t even funny. And while gaming isn’t one of life’s necessities, it is a mainstream hobby enjoyed by millions of people worldwide. That includes disabled people. But it’s certainly harder to game when you have a disability that affects your hands. So why doesn’t every game have the ability for custom mapping of the controller buttons?
That’s the question being asked Chuck Bittner, a quadriplegic gamer and comedian who calls himself the Can’t Stand Up Comic. He has started a petition to persuade games developers and console manufacturers to include custom button mapping in every game. He spells out his case in a post on the AskACapper blog, where he also posts a link to the video embedded below showing the problems he currently has playing Call Of Duty.
The fact this guy and other disabled people play games is amazing to me. It shows a level of commitment to the hobby of gaming that puts most of us to shame. So is it too much to ask for game developers and console manufacturers to ensure disabled gamers get the best experience possible by including custom button mapping to all games? I fully support this effort and I hope you will too.

One of my highschool buddies lost his thumbs and first two fingers on the his left hand in a car accident about 10 years ago. He kicks my ass in most any vs game, there is no disability in his case, humans are amazing at adapting to achieve our goals, one of the reasons we cover the earth.
But I do have to light his bong for him, a fact I try to remind him of everytime he rips me a new one in SF4.

He owns his own business, has a hot wife, and 4 kids that didn’t at all harm his wife’s hotness. Don’t feel bad for him, he sure doesn’t

Gaming at least on PlayStation platforms is a necessary thing to do.

Andrew your a dick with big fuckin ears 8=D… Maybe Sony or some other company will come out with some kind of special controller for people in that situation?? Be good publicity for them anyway.

You know I was in a car crash one time and damn near lost my leg not to mention my life. In fact if it wasn’t for a nice couple from another state stopping and calling 911 and that guy nurse who rode with me in the helicopter on the way to the hospital I would have lost both I have no doubt. Point being if it wasn’t for video games I would have went fuckin insane while recovering. So I can only imagine what it must be like for folks who can barely move. So yeah Sony and M$ needs to get off there asses and come up with something to help people like this out.

Sorry to hear that Ghost. I notice that you make no reference to Nintendo needing to get off their asses as they already have the Wii.
The good thing about the Wii is that it is already quite suitable to people like the dude above. A bit of Velcro or tape to stick the controllers to the stumps and whay hay you have motion control!
Popular games could be re-hashed for this market. Imagine – Street Fighter could become Flid Fighter, Wii Fit would be Wii Flid. Of course people with epilepsy would not be eligible to enter their high scores for Mario Olympics or Wii Flid hula hoops.

And Ivan, gaming on playstation is not a necessary thing to do.
Taking a dump is a necessary thing to do. Oh wait…

Well, Andrew I have to agree with you regarding the Wii controller. The controller is probably the only useful thing about the Wii considering it has no games and it lacks high definition graphics.

Exactly Twilight. The lack of HD graphics caters for the Mr Magoos out there too. Its the console that just keeps giving. Except to spazzies. For them there is the playstation.

Custom button mapping should be an industry standart by now, like scene selection and audio/subtitles settings for DVD and BD. How difficult could it be?

I’ll one up that. You should be able to save a custom controller setup for specific types of games. For the most part almost every fps has the same options so it shouldn’t be to difficult.
At no point ever do I want my fire buttons on L2 or R2.

Welcome to the world of consoles! Where the most common faction (those that never remap thier controller layout) determine the (lack-of)development of your favourite games
Enjoy not being able to remap

Don’t forget sw. Playing fps’s on a console after playing on pc’s is Akin to trying to do sign language with boxing gloves on.

Indeed it is.
