Quantum Theory – Sony can’t keep PS3 exclusives
The battle for exclusives is a thing of the past as development costs have skyrocketed in recent years. Developers and publishers are less willing to create a game for just one platform these days. It came as no surprise when Tecmo announced that a PS3 exclusive title will go multiplatform.
According to Joystiq, Tecmo revealed today that Quantum Theory, which was announced as a PS3 exclusive, will be coming out on the Xbox 360 around a similar timeframe. It is unclear if it will be a timed exclusive, as the PS3 version is said to be over 70 percent complete by Tecmo.
Is this another sign after the Final Fantasy XIII incident that Sony just can’t hold on to those exclusives? I did remark that it was interesting that Sony did not showcase Quantum Theory at any of the trade shows, and this just might be the reason why. I can’t say I’m too surprised as this is the same studio that took Microsoft’s first party published Ninja Gaiden II and flipped it into a PS3 game.
I wonder if the lukewarm reception it received from the media had anything to do with making it multiplatform. However, despite the Gears comparison, I still think it is a unique and interesting title that blends Devil May Cry and Gears of War type genres.

Exclusives will be the sole territory of 1st party studios within a few years. It just doesn’t make financial sense to limit games to one console without the massive financial/tech support incentives that 1st party studios enjoy.
There may exceptions in the case of post-japanese success RPG localizations like Demon’s Souls and WKC, but I think in general exclusives will have to be paid for one way or another. To do otherwise would be to halve the potential market that decides if you make a profit or not.

I’d say Ninja Gaiden over DMC especially given that NG is a Tecmo series.
The game mixed a little melee with a shooter engine.

Sony doesn’t need this game as exclusive it looks very crappy and any ways we all know is coming exclusive to PS3 at least like a Microsoft timed exclusive for a few months. Sony doesn’t need this game they got an army of must A+ exclusive they own. A an Army so big Microsoft can’t even imagine trying to over take that. I bet this game is not that good.

I don’t recall anyone trumpetting this game, or even looking forward to it. (maybe Ivan, but I don’t pay attention to him, so I can be forgiven) Your projecting a little much.
I have to agree with Roca, knowing that the launch period on this game for a long time, and have known that there are more desirable titles available in that time, it was never a consideration, exclusive or not.

The new Xbot strategy. Make PS3 users seem petty. It’s all good. While that is their strategy we can continue to talk about…..games, which is what we were doing from the get go.
Thinking this game was going to remain exclusive was fairly far fetched imho. Especially that it’s a Tecmo game.
The next DOA will also be multiplatform.

People are bound to have their particular favourite, it’s only natural.

Yeah sure. Microsoft barely has any exclusives and the one they actually have are pathetic. They can’t ever catch up with Sony unless Microsoft invest more in gaming. Sony has more then double what Microsoft has.
Why do you think there’s not many articles about Xbox 360 losing exclsuives or having exclsuives for that matter. Sony is where developers go first is. Because PlayStation is a massive most have brand.
Microsoft has also lost a lot of exclusives but Americans don’t write about it.

Another cool tidbit from metacritic. 5 games on the 360′s top 20 are 360 exclusives while 7 games on the ps3′s top 20 are ps3 exclusives.

GTA series is publish by CAPCOM in Japan.
And Mass Effect is own by Bioware which is not own by Electronic Arts a money hungry driven passionate company with no loyalty to Sony anymore.
The same goes for Gears of War epic can bring the whole trilogy to PS3 after the contacts are expire.
Just look at what TECMO did with the Ninja Gaiden series others can do the same if they feel like it to make extra cash.
The only secured game exclusive on Xbox 360 is Left 4 Dead because the company is run by Xbox 360 fanboys.

Interesting take. Thats odd that Sony wouldn’t just publish it themselves. I’m sure it’s different as the GOW series is a 1st party developed series while all the other ones we’re talking about are third party.

I don’t think it’s too far fetched to think any Valve game may show up on the PS3. Yes..Gabe the Hutt has shown distaste for the PS3 not using Microsoft’s technology, but at the same time you see they are hiring people with PS3 knowledge. EA did a port before, I would really like to see their games in more competent hands..Maybe Ready at Dawn.

this gen, the poor sales of the ps3 coupled with the insanely high costs of developing for the ps3 just doesn’t make sense to stay exclusive. it’s a sucker bet…

Why yes, actually Metacritic and professional reviewers consider GTAIV/similar DLC and arcade games to be very good games in their own right. Apparently there are more games on 360 overall that are well reviewed than PSN this year, but I wouldn’t take it “personally” if I were you roca… lol.

Roca… lol… you are repeating yourself “list warrior”. You obviously feel the need to prove some kind of “superiority” with your “disc based retail” exclusives ONLY(and repeating) lists, so have fun with Buzz!, Singstar Queen, and Take That (I really don’t see how these are “better” than GTA DLC or Shadow Complex and neither do the majority of reviewers, but whatever floats your boat). Besides UC2, there is a shooter (albeit a “pretty” one), a two HD game “collection” of games we played last gen (it’s fun, but these are still essentially last gen games with an psuedo HD filter) and a remake (with a lot less blood) of Ninja Gaiden 2 that I already played and fully enjoyed last year on 360.
I’ve already played all on the PS3 and 360 side that I really cared to, though there is still a lot more fun to be had on both consoles for me in games that I have yet to play. Until March the only thing to really look forward to is Mass Effect 2 and Halo Reach as far as “exclusives” go, but plenty of multiplats. The point is that both consoles have great games (including DLC and Arcade), neither one is really superior overall this year in that department. Yes, 360 does have more well reviewed games this year overall on Metacritic, but only by a few games, so I would not take it too seriously if I were you.

How come 360 has demos for all of it’s Arcade and even Indie games, but PSN has hardly any for it’s PSN games (even when the game is on both systems, i.e. Call of Duty Classic)… looks like mini’s are the same.
