Final Fantasy XIII review score controversy justified?
The most anticipated RPG game of the decade is set to come out in Japan on Dec. 17. The biggest video game magazine in Japan, Famitsu reviewed Final Fantasy XIII. There is some controversy over the score that the magazine gave the title.
According to recent Fanitsu scans on Final Fantasy-XIII.net, the Japan based publisher has reviewed the PS3 version of Final Fantasy XIII already and gave it an interesting score. The magazine gives the highly anticipated RPG, a review score of 39/40.
This is an excellent score, but judging from the reaction from fans around the world, many do not agree with me. It could be because Famitsu recently gave Bayonetta a perfect 40/40. Famitsu, a magazine that’s been in publication for 23 years has only given four perfect scores in all of its history (Bayonetta, Monster Hunter 3, New Super Mario Bros, and Dragon Quest IX).
Famitsu review scores comprise of four 10-point ratings given out by four different individuals. It seems like one of the reviewers gave FFXIII a 9/10. Looking at the translation provided by Final Fantasy-XIII.net, the reviewer criticized minor issues like not being able to clearly see battle point damages at times. The reviewer also stated that FFXIII does not seem like a “RPG-like RPG.†Who knows what that means, but it could be a good thing as well.

“has only given four perfect scores in all of its history”
That would be 4 perfect scores this year Mike (Kotaku has it right). It has actually given 13 in it’s entire history.
“Here is how the other FF title stack up in the eyes of Famitsu:
Final Fantasy I – 35
Final Fantasy II – 35
Final Fantasy III – 36
Final Fantasy â…£ – 36
Final Fantasy V – 34
Final Fantasy VI – 37
Final Fantasy VII – 38
Final Fantasy VIII – 37
Final Fantasy IX – 38
Final Fantasy X – 39
Final Fantasy XI – 38
Final Fantasy XII- 40
Final Fantasy XIII – 39″

Apparently Famitsu rates XII as the pinnacle of the series so far, and V as the lowest point.

OMG!!!!! It’s not perfect.

“Apparently Famitsu rates XII as the pinnacle of the series so far, and V as the lowest point.”
I will have to agree with that. V sucked and XII was awesome and innovative.

My beef with 12 was the fighting engine. It was trying to be too mmo like. I still prefer turn based.
December 9th, 2009
Are you serious?!
I read the actual review and his main complaint was the story was linear for the first part of the game… Excuse me? FFXII got a perfect score and that had the worst storyline of a Final Fantasy to date. I would really like to hear a interview with the reviewer as to how FF12 story was better then FF13, i dont think he will have much to say.. As for the combat not seeing some damage counters, when your doing aerial i can see that, or fighting really large creatures its understandable. I guess im just kind of upset with the reviewers complaints when 12 (which is one of my favorite FF’s, just thought the story was horrid) got a perfect score and named the story as being a complaint…

what I dont like after the Square and Enix merge is that now you CANNOT fly around to any place in the World Map. now you choose the point where you have to go and it automatically transport you there

Final Fantasy XIII
“Whether you knew this or not, SE states that the audio and video on the Xbox 360 version will be compressed to fit on DVD, while the PS3 version will remain uncompressed and ship on a dual-layer Blu-Ray disc.
This is further confirmation that the game will ship on multiple Xbox 360 discs, while the uncompressed PS3 version is said to be sized at a minimum of 25GB.”
December 9th, 2009
If the cutscenes are hidef quality on the PS3 version and DVD quality on the 360 that will be a big deal.
Otherwise all it will mean in more DVD’s on the 360 version and more loading times on the PS3 version since they’ll be using a dual layered disc. Load times are practically doubled. It will need a partial install.

New Mario Brothers is a perfect game? Goodbye creditability.
Maybe when that exact same game came out a decade ago, but simply adding 4 played co-op doesn’t make up for it.
Famitsu you fail hard!

“My beef with 12 was the fighting engine. It was trying to be too mmo like. I still prefer turn based”
I actually liked it, but thought the story was kind of bland.
The battle system let you coast through some of the easier battles, but I found myself micromanaging every action during bigger battles. It worked worked pretty well imo.
December 9th, 2009
the new system works well to use the Magic/spell that you would have never use in Final Fantasy game before because you most likely didnt wanted to waste a turn on those kinds of spell.
I were doing my attacks manually but all my party members were casting:
-Haste
-Buble
-Protect
-Barrier
-M Barrier
-Berserk
-revive
-Decoy
-invisible
-Curaga (healing each other if health was under 30%)
-Using Turbo Ether when needed
-Special Magic spell for flying enemies
December 9th, 2009
also the that game has the two most difficult bosses (there were optional though) in video game history.
I fought one of them for 3 weeks straight without turning my PS2 off and I still couldnt beat the damn thing. I ran out of MP, potions, Ether, Elixir. I had nothing else to fight him with other than mele attacks

“simply adding 4 played co-op doesn’t make up for it.”
From what I understand, they added quite a bit more than that barnabe, more than a few other major pubs and mags agree, I can’t see how they all should lose their credibility. It would be like saying Uncharted 2 simply added prettier graphics… it just isn’t true.

I was under the impression the new Super Mario Brothers is an entirely new game. Well almost entirely new. Isn’t it a DS port that added 4 player co op?
Anyway. 4 player Co op isn’t that great for platformers. In fact it can be down right frustrating at times.
December 9th, 2009
it would’ve had been better if it was co-op online
December 9th, 2009
“it would’ve had been better if it was co-op online”
good point. Then at least you don’t have to worry about losing the other player and keeping them on “your” screen.

I wish him luck trying to pirate Agito, 14 and Versus
December 9th, 2009
Carl B,
Propeller hats were a recycled mechanic from the DS game’s springs that you jumped on.
Same graphics, music, characters… they did the absolute bare minimum, by adding 4 player local (not online) co-op. It’s Nintendo as usual – half assed and playing off of people’s nostalgia.
I’m sure it’s probably a decent game, but it’s certainly not anything new, original, or exciting.
December 9th, 2009
I’m sure there will be an Agito ISO before the retail game hits US shores.
Not that I’ll download it, but just saying.

its just like Mario Party 8, Mario Kark and Mario Stricker, and SSBB…they were all basically Gamecube games with motion, few more charaters and color. nothing new there!

Final Fantasy XIII for PS3 only maybe this month or on my birthday
Final Fantasy Versus XIII i want this game a must buy.
Final Fantasy XIV a must buy i love online.
Final Fantasy Agito XIII and yes this will be free maybe.
I will not pirate FF XIII for Xbox 360 is a waste of DVD too many fuck that. I will buy it for PS3 the better version.

December 10th, 2009
Aw no, the tragediez. Review scores are based on the reviewer’s experience. Even when Uncharted 2 got a 7/10 from one reviewer, I was fine with it. The problem is that the same website gave games such as Halo 3, Gears, ODST, and all the 360 biggies 10/10, and actually gave Killzone 2 a 6, so I have to wonder.
Speaking of Uncharted, I want to see some Egypt in U3. Not the whole game, just a portion, and no mummies (that would be extremely generic). But I need to see duststorms and the Pyramids in graphics like that. They did jungle, city, snow, and temples. You need a teeny bit of sand in an adventure game series.

Yes, In Japan is a exclusive. Is %100 true.

CarlB:
Yeah, Okay… Xbox 360 is not liked by Japanese they don’t even care for that shit.
December 10th, 2009
I’m not talking about the Japanese Ivan, I’m talking about the Marines like myself that are stationed in Japan.
December 10th, 2009
CarlB:
What the fuck are you blabbering about. And yes Microsoft should just give up selling Xbox 360 in Japan.
December 11th, 2009
Ivan, there are approximately 1,194,841 total sales of 360 in Japan. Considering those that only own a 360, it is reasonable to assume many will purchase the 360 version in Japan come March. For the tens of thousands of military members like myself, this is relatively easy to do via the many exchanges on our base. Therefore, it is not “100% exclusive in Japan”, it is a (limited) timed exclusive in Japan.
