PS3 firmware 3.15 unlocks Minis on your HD TV
Rumors of a new firmware that will enable you to play bite-sized Playstation Minis has been circulating the Web since last week. It looks like those rumors are completely true as Sony officially confirmed this today.
On the official European Playstation Blog, it was announced that a new firmware update 3.15 will be coming very soon. The Playstation team is readying a library of Minis to hit the PSN store by Dec. 17, in time for PS3 only owners to enjoy playing these fun bite sized games.
The site offers some recommendations as well:
Check out great titles like ‘Blast off’ (8.5/10 – IGN), ‘Fieldrunners’, “a wonderfully crafted casual nugget†(8/10 – Eurogamer) or ‘Kahoots’, “a must-buy†(8/10 – Videogamer).

Within the update, there will also be a new data transfer functionality. This will allow you to transfer games, saved files, music and video from one PS3 to another. The neat part about this tool is that it allows you to do it by just connecting any old Ethernet cable to both of the PS3s.
The data transfer functionality will detect purchased PSN games and movies and will delete them off your originating PS3 and copy them over to the destination PS3 due to copyright reasons. Personal content can be copied to another PS3 without worrying about deletion.

I read this 2 days ago is awesome news. Can’t wait to get this for PS3. I will get this most likely free for PSP but not PS3. I bet most of these games are going to be pure awesome i hope on PS3 they support trophies and online support with voice chat. If they all have that i will buy them all as soon as they appear on the PlayStation Store.

“bite-sized Playstation Minis†and these are different from Wii Mini-games how?
December 9th, 2009
http://pspminis.com/
December 9th, 2009
Mini’s, are you serious? This deserves news. You might as well start reviewing Iphone/Blackberry/Windows Mobile game too. I can’t believe how every little stupid thing about PS3 get news on Blorge. Yet I have never heard a peep about Indie/XNA Games or Zune Games either. Whatever Blorge.
December 9th, 2009
@CAD
those others do get reviewed on blorge. Just not gamer blorge. I for one would like to have upscaled psp games on the ps3.
It’s also nice that Sony isn’t forcing anyone into buying their propietary cables in order to transfer data from one system to another.
December 9th, 2009
Whatever Sony …… tell me why I can’t get audio out of HDMI on my ps3 slim !!!!!!!
NOT HAPPY JAN
(sorry, only the aussie’s will know what I am talking about there, eh Harry)
December 9th, 2009
@Spidey.
Is it a new console?
December 9th, 2009
Yep
December 9th, 2009
Couple of months old actually.
December 9th, 2009
I’d reset it. Let it re find everything. Are you sure it’s not the receiver?
December 9th, 2009
I’ll try another TV to make sure. Resetting doesn’t work. Updated the firmware, no good. Used the composite cable and it does work, but using the HDMI and the RCA audio doesn’t work though either.
December 9th, 2009
maybe something got reset. check audio setting and make sure its on hdmi.
December 9th, 2009
@Spidey,
did you use to get sound through HDMI with you old PS3?
if you cant get any sound I will just say to return the system for a new one.
December 9th, 2009
“It’s also nice that Sony isn’t forcing anyone into buying their propietary cables in order to transfer data from one system to another.”
LOL…..soo truee
@ CAD,
you complain about Sony copying XBL’s feature and now that they are doing an update totally different from what MS has done before you are still complaining.
December 9th, 2009
Spidey
Last I read was that the slim can do it but it’s not as easy as it might have been (why not an auto detect?) & a bit of a PITA to set up.
I’m sure you’ll have already looked around but I saw this if it’s any help –
*video settings – bd audio out – hdmi – bitstream
December 9th, 2009
Microsoft haven’t forced me to buy a proprietary cable to transfer data either.
They send the data transfer cable, hard drive adaptor & software disc out free if you ask for it.
December 9th, 2009
@happy.
Theres an audio setting completely separate from BD settings. Thats the one he should check out.
“They send the data transfer cable, hard drive adaptor & software disc out free if you ask for it.”
never heard that. All I know is, that it’s packaged and sold for $20
December 9th, 2009
360 transfer cable are $20.
setting the audio on the PS3 is a PITA?? lol
December 9th, 2009
I just hope they fix the trophy syncing. It works only about 70% of the time.
December 9th, 2009
The only pain in the ass I experienced was moving my setup from my house to someone elses to show them if they had hdmi and I didn’t. I needed to reset and auto detect as I was using component (older tv)
December 9th, 2009
im sure that was a pain in the ass
December 9th, 2009
Hauling my heavy 60 gig. It was like lifting weights.
. At least
there was no power brick.
December 9th, 2009
Roca
No the transfer cable is free. You just have to call and ask for it. Where do you get your info?
December 9th, 2009
@CAD
amazon has it for sale.
December 9th, 2009
@ CAD
who pays for S & H ?
December 9th, 2009
idk if its free now, but there were $20 before.
either way they are still jacking you guys up with the cost of thier HDDs
December 9th, 2009
phranctoast, Roca and anyone else laboring under the misinformation –
Regardless whether or not some, er, enterprising Xbox owners are ebaying their units or a 3rd party seller has produced their own version.
The fact is it is free.
Right now.
I know, I just sent away for one for my Super Elite.
It always has been free too
(I know I sent away and got one free when I moved from the 60gb to the 120gb unit)
All that anyone needs to do is simply contact Microsoft.
Give them the serial number of the old Xbox and the new one and they will send you the data transfer kit, free.
Where are you getting your info from?
(or did you get suckered by said ‘enterprising’ 3rd party seller or Xbox owner?)
December 9th, 2009
Roca
Just ask Spidey how easy it is.
December 9th, 2009
BTW
When I said free I meant completely free
(bar the stamp on the letter I sent detailing my serial numbers …..but you can phone if you prefer).
No shipping, handling or packaging costs.
Direct from Microsoft.
For UK & European posters here’s the PDF giving all the details –

December 9th, 2009
(and although the form talks about Pro & Elite it does work for Elite to Super Elite.
The latest kit handles that, early kits won’t & you will need a new one)
December 9th, 2009
Spidey sure know how easy it is. he is just not getting any sound (can’t you read). it is either that his system, HDMI ports on the system or HDMI port on his TV is not working. how difficult is that to understand?
if everything is working fine all you have to do is plugin the HDMI cable or the av cables. the system will recognize it and ask you if you want the system to automatically switch the settings for you or if you want to keep it the way it is. simple as that.
December 9th, 2009
Makes you wonder how many other 360 users know it’s free or who just opts for the third party one since they know no better.
December 9th, 2009
“(and although the form talks about Pro & Elite it does work for Elite to Super Elite.
The latest kit handles that, early kits won’t & you will need a new one)”
talk about PITA!! lol
December 9th, 2009
i believed the cost for the cable are covered by the overprice MS propietary HDDs. 120GB is over 100 dollars. you can easy get a 500GB HDD for the PS3 for the same price (no transfer kit needed)
December 9th, 2009
Thats how they also cover the “free” headset.
December 9th, 2009
forgot about that…thanks
I also like the way Sony keeps constantly updating the PS3. it keeps hackers at bay
December 9th, 2009
Microsoft is crewing with every customer stealing huge money. The HDMI that was included before and the headset is not free trust me.
Xbox 360 $300
Xbox 360 $400
HDD 120 GB $150
HDD 60GB $100
WiFi Adapter $100
No Blu-ray support
Xbox Live $50
Play in Charge Kit $20
Total = You Add It.
PLAYSTATION 3 $299.99
PS3 $349.99
HDD 120GB Free
HDD 350GB Free
PLAYSTATION Network Free
Blu-ray Disc drive Free
USB Charger Free
Total= You Might Just Buy This Ultimate Gaming Beast Right Now.
December 9th, 2009
This is an update I’ll probably not take much advantage of. It is nice for people that buy these games on the psp so they can also have them on the ps3.
The only disadvantage I see some of the minis having is making it harder to distinguish between the minis and the legitimate psn games.
December 9th, 2009
“idk if its free now, but there were $20 before.
either way they are still jacking you guys up with the cost of thier HDDs”
Considering that we all did not buy arcades and we all have HDDs exactly who is being screwed. Come on Roca stop clutching at straws. That is pretty weak and petty. Because your wrong about something you have to bring up something else to justify yourself and your redirection is not even related to anything else being talkied about. Do you guys just come in here with the adgenda to say anything bad about the 360 every single day. PS3 fanboys are pathetic.
December 9th, 2009
Oh and Microsoft pays the shipping and handeling. More clutching at straws.
December 9th, 2009
“Do you guys just come in here with the adgenda to say anything bad about the 360 every single day. PS3 fanboys are pathetic.”
Here’s CADs first post in the topic.
“Mini’s, are you serious? This deserves news. You might as well start reviewing Iphone/Blackberry/Windows Mobile game too. I can’t believe how every little stupid thing about PS3 get news on Blorge. Yet I have never heard a peep about Indie/XNA Games or Zune Games either. Whatever Blorge.”
December 9th, 2009
CAD “Oh and Microsoft pays the shipping and handeling. More clutching at straws.”
what are you talking about…I just asked who pays for S & H. good to know MS take care of it.
LOL @ Phranc
December 9th, 2009
Well Phranctoast am I complaining about the PS3 and dissing it or am I complaing about why Mini’s is news on gaming.Blorge? Think about it real hard.
December 9th, 2009
why will a new 360 interface be news on blorge? minis are at least games that you can play
December 9th, 2009
Roca
“(and although the form talks about Pro & Elite it does work for Elite to Super Elite.

talk about PITA!!”
What’s PITA about this?
You don’t need to do anything, Microsoft send you the kit.
Even if you had the old kit (which to be precise refers to the 20gb – 60gb kit when the 60gb model appeared, which was some time back) what’s the big deal about sending off for a new one, it’s all free.
I see Ivan’s gone scouring the web for the highest priced Xbox peripherals he can find
(just like you always manage to do Roca).
Boring.
December 9th, 2009
I kinda agree with CAD.
Must be a slow day at the office.
I’m not taking a swipe, it just doesn’t seem like big news is all. I can appreciate that there isn’t always something big to report on.
Can’t remember the point I’m trying to make now. lol
December 9th, 2009
@HH
They send you this for free? Nice.
Doesn’t sound like there are much grounds for moaning then eh?
December 9th, 2009
ViRuS
Too true.
BTW what are “mini’s”?
On Xbox we have arcade games, are minis just a small arcade game?
Sounds like it to me.
Strange, just as the limit on XBL Arcade games gets lifted to 2gb PS3 is making a virtue of the other end of the scale.
Nothing wrong with that I guess, some of the old-school & small Arcade games are superb.
December 9th, 2009
Xbox Live Arcade is all on the web free LoL flash games.
December 9th, 2009
Minis = Games under 100MB made by regular people just like games for iPhone. These games will be smaller, cheaper, and will be download only.
December 9th, 2009
“Strange, just as the limit on XBL Arcade games gets lifted to 2gb PS3 is making a virtue of the other end of the scale.”
there are 5GB and 10GB games on PSN
December 9th, 2009
Roca
You can also now get much bigger full-sized games on XBL.
They are not Arcade games though.
Arcade games are free or have a low price.
December 9th, 2009
HH, Phranc and Roca, thanks for the suggestions guys.
I have been using the same TV with the same settings (HDMI) and had no dramas until I turned it on one morning and bingo ….. no sound. Nothing had been changed, it hadn’t reset itself.
Roca, I am not near my ps3 phat, as I am away from home, in the remote outback in Oz with work for a few months. This makes it even more frustrating, because I can’t return it for warranty until I get back home. So no BD movies or games for me (except my fine selection on laptop)
Tried almost everything. Reset all the settings, did auto detect, manual settings, different HDMI ports, HDMI with RCA audio. I will try a different TV in the next couple of days, but it’s looking like the ps3 Slim is the culprit. Looking on the net, there appears to be a few others having this issue with the slim or it’s just internet hype ???
December 9th, 2009
Mini’s are like iPhone games, less than 100mb?
On an HD TV?
Hmmmm, I’d want a good look 1st before rating them.
December 9th, 2009
HH
there are PSP games that you can play on the PS3, just like you can play PS1 games on the PS3
December 9th, 2009
Wal-Mart to sell $958 PS3, HDTV bundle SKU

December 9th, 2009
@ Spidey,
NOT…. HAPPY….JAN!!!!
When my brother in law brought his phat over for the first time we plugged it into the hdmi input on my TV and it looked like rubbish and there was no sound. We ended up Googling the symptoms and after about 15 minutes of trial and error it came good. Does Google have any hints for your issue? OR could it be a dodgy hdmi cable?
December 9th, 2009
I never had a problem with my PS3 and my Bravia 3 different models all work perfectly.
December 9th, 2009
Yeah, sure Ivan.
Everything you say is now so credible.
Just like that Vaio with a 500gb SSD you got in June 09.
Everyone’s impressed.
No, really.
LMAO
December 10th, 2009
“I never had a problem with my PS3″
Didn’t you say you had to send yours in and pay for the repairs when you had a disc read error?
December 10th, 2009
How come my PS3 Slim can’t remember where I left off playing a disc like my 360 can with a DVD? Is it not a feature that blu-ray has, or is it just the slim?
December 10th, 2009
That’s strange Carl. Even my $25 dvd player remembers where i was after I switch it off.
December 10th, 2009
Spidey,
For some reason I have a different audio problem… the audio on the slim cuts out with optical cable, but is steady with HDMI (although I have to turn up the volume on my reciever much more with both when compared to 360 sound, and I have no problem with optical on 360).
December 10th, 2009
Make up stories
December 10th, 2009
Ok Ivan, you’re right. My dvd player did not remember where the movie was when I switched it off. Can’t get anything past you, can we?
December 10th, 2009
harry sachz:
I never said anything about DVD. You still use DVD? That’s so old.
December 10th, 2009
Maybe the update will help… man this is taking a long time.
December 10th, 2009
Wow LoL…
December 10th, 2009
Now there is no voice at all on the Star Trek blu-ray I am playing wtf? It was working fine before…
December 10th, 2009
CarlB:
Then is not the PS3 the problem check your TV. And isn’t Star Trek a geek movie.
I’m about to watch 2012, Armored and Ninja.
December 10th, 2009
The new Star Trek was an awesome movie.
You may have to brave customer support CharlieB. Good luck!
December 10th, 2009
Isn’t 2012 still in the movies? Or have you downloaded a cam job?
December 10th, 2009
Isn’t 2012 a Disney Movie… lol. The new Star Trek movie is a sci-fi experience, 2012 is doomsday popcorn for kids. Figured it out, had to readjust the audio settings in the XMB menu.
December 10th, 2009
CarlB:
2012 is a Columbia Pictures film by Roland Emmerich. Star Trek is %100 geek only not saying you a nerd. I have 2012 in perfect quality if you wanna see it let me know anyone here.
Currently counting the second until season 8 of 24 premiere on January 17, 2010. That’s an awesome show just like Prison Break was.
December 10th, 2009
24 did extreme recycling after season 3. 2012 – world disaster and happy ending, go figure. All that’s left is for Cusack to hold up a boombox. Black holes in Trek are much more believable.
December 10th, 2009
24 just gets better and better, I’m addicted to that show.
Also Sleeper Cell and Sleeper cell: American Terror a Showtime original is a must see show only had 18 episodes aired.
I don’t really like John Cusack i consider him a mediocre actor. But 2012 is just too damn awesome.
Also i like V shows and the T saga movie.
December 10th, 2009
“The new Star Trek was an awesome movie.” Yes, it was. I’ve never watched anything Star Trek related before but I did like this movie.
December 10th, 2009
“This will allow you to transfer games, saved files, music and video from one PS3 to another.”
This is AWSOME! I emailed them a while back and asked for this. I also asked why I get an error syncing trophies and they said expect an update early Dec.
December 10th, 2009
One more reason to keep my PS3′s on. lol
December 10th, 2009
I am a huge Star Trek fan. I watched all the movies many times as well as the next gen shows.
But now I’m more into Superman, Smallville and now that I’m older and have coin, I’m making a nice comic collection.
December 10th, 2009
@Carlb “Figured it out, had to readjust the audio settings in the XMB menu.”
Was this after an update?
December 10th, 2009
“This is AWSOME! I emailed them a while back and asked for this. I also asked why I get an error syncing trophies and they said expect an update early Dec”
great, whenever you have another great idiea like this email them again, maybe it’ll come true
December 10th, 2009
Just got all 11 Star Trek high def movies.
Happy happy joy joy!
December 10th, 2009
Blu ray?
December 10th, 2009
@ twilight,
Same here, I was never into the older movies. The new one was great.
December 10th, 2009
after an update
December 10th, 2009
phranctoast
Try before buy time.
1080p 9 – 12gb encodes with DTS 5.1 audio @ 15000kbps.
Biggest single download I’ve ever done and they all look and sound great.
I’ll buy the Blu-ray boxset when it isn’t priced at such a silly rate.
It’s the same with the Battlestar collection, i liked the show (a lot) but I’m not paying £100+ for a now old & dead TV show, HD or no HD.
I have them all on SD DVD and I have several episodes on HD capture anyways.
December 10th, 2009
Oooops.
That should of course be 1500kbps DTS 5.1.
December 11th, 2009
@Happy.
Both were on sale for great prices during black Friday. I’m sure we’ll see it again at some point.
@harry/twilight
I agree. The movie was awesome. I really didn’t expect to like it as much as I did. It went from rental status to own
December 11th, 2009
phranctoast
Yeah but we don’t have a ‘Black Friday’ here in the UK and if I’d gone to personally import the import duties and tax would easily wipe out any saving.
Unfortunately.
(although one or two outlets are starting to use the term, maybe the net will help give it familiarity here & it can become a tradition like you have in the US)
They’ll be down to something more realistic soon enough, I can wait and until then I have the superb encodes
(and they really are good work, whoever made the pack knew what he/she/they were at).
I have a secondary reason for waiting too.
I am disappointed that the current relases are all theatrical releases and compared to the DVD releases some extras aren’t there when they ought to be.
I know that won’t bother too many but there are some examples (The Motion Picture for instance) where the director’s edition ought to have been part of the release and they were just being cheap (and setting up a later ‘ultimate edition’ type milking ploy).
The b*ggers.
December 11th, 2009
which service did you buy the download version from ?
December 11th, 2009
@happy
I hear ya. I hate in when they try and double dip. I for one will be waiting on the extended LOTR box set, as I hear they are releasing the theatrical first like they did with DVD.
Thats some Lucas like BS.
December 12th, 2009
Yeah well, being fickle me I thought f*ck it tonight and bought all 11 on Blu-ray.
Got to have that lossless audio.
December 13th, 2009
But I still loathe their double-dip mentality.
If…..
…..oh b*llocks who are they kidding?
……when the next versions appear at least I can eBay these ones, meantime I guess I have them all to enjoy.
