PS3 Slim Vs. Xbox 360 Elite – Which console should you buy this Christmas?
We’re now well into the holiday season and people everywhere will be looking to buy a games console, either for themselves or as a present. But which one to choose? The Wii sits on its own and isn’t competing – it’s already way ahead with enough fans – but the PS3 and Xbox 360 are going head-to-head. So which is better – the PS3 Slim or the Xbox 360 Elite?
In February we featured a CNet video showing the PS3 and Xbox 360 competing in a six round battle to decide which was better. The Xbox 360 won by a small margin. But things have changed over the past 10 months, with new games, updated graphics, improvements to the online features, redesigns, and price cuts. So which console is better at this stage of the game?
In essence (for those who can’t be bothered to watch the video), the PS3 Slim wins overall, the first time in three attempts. The PS3 wins on Design, Features, Graphics, and Value, while the Xbox 360 wins on Online, and Games.
This is, of course, just the opinion of three guys at CNet, one of whom is Brian Tong… but it’s still a good indicator of where the two consoles are at this stage. Whether you agree with the result or not, we can all surely agree that both the PS3 and Xbox 360 are currently at the top of their game, and 2010 promises to ramp everything up even more.

The ps3 is clearly the better value regardless of how you spin it. Hmmmmm. Blu Ray player or packaged headset? Clearly a very easy choice.
December 10th, 2009
As long as the audio works !!!!! Seriously, regardless of what you buy, you would be happy with either
December 10th, 2009
Well that depends on how you define value. Bottom line is that value come at a price and so far the price is that every PS3 sells at a loss. So go ahead and shoot yourself in the foot trying to compete Sony. The value for me come in the quality of games and not the features. Taking years to make a game look good is fine but gameplay trumps graphics and the 360 has plenty of great games which the review points out and they look great and are tones of fun and I don’t have to go through massive wait times just to make a game extra glossy. I gotta Bluray in my Laptop (which I just recieved) and I prefer to have it there then in my game system. Have no care for Wi-Fi as real reliable online gaming works best with a wire. Also with the amount of devices hooking up the the internet these days it is kind of foolish if your internet connection is not in your livingroom. 360 is still the best value no matter what and there is no way that the PS3 wins on Features when you consider that they ripped almost every feature on the 360 and who knows what is next.

PS3 without a doubt, for MANY reasons:
Get the PS3 without a doubt. There are many reasons for this.
1/ It offers by far the best value, with a far better hardware platform, free online gaming, Blu-Ray, media streaming, web browser, a better stocked movie store.
2/The Exclusive games. Far better and far more plentiful. Uncharted2 is the best game this generation by a VERY long mile. Any gamer worth his salt needs to play it. You also have God Of War III, Heavy Rain, GT5 all coming early next year, and you have a tonne of excluisves (and of course the multiplats) to tide you over til then.
3/ The price, same as Xbox, but so much more for your money, like Blu-Ray, Wifi, Online gaming and rechargable controllers (all of which cost extra money on Xbox)
4/ The build quality. PS3 is really good, and silent running. Xbox is still abysmal in both these respects.
5/ The community, fare more mature. Xbox Live is full of kids screaming abuse into their headsets.
6/ Open standards. PS3 supports open standards, you can use ANY 2.5in HDD in there to upgrade to, you can use ANY USB key to load data and games saves to/from, Microsoft force you to use overpriced Microsoft versions.
7/Quality (already mentioned this), but EVERYTHING about the PS3 is quality, quality hardware, quality features, quality performance, quality games.
8/Quality of downloadable games. FAR Superior on PS3, less titles, but of a higher quality. XBLA is full of dross, and it’s hard to find the good stuff. Almost everything on PSN is good.
The Blu-Ray player alone in the PS3 is worth the asking price. Up against players over twice the price, the PS3 will still come out tops in quality, it also right up there with Reon based DVD Upscalers too for SD content.

Lol @ CAD. Such a Sony hater.
I don’t really care that the PS3 won on features and design and what not, It didn’t win on the one it should of… games. It easily had the best line up this year, oh well it’s their opinion tho.

I have NEVER had an issue using wifi with PSN and has been just as reliable and useable as wired for my PC. Besides wifi is far more convenient as I have HEAPS of devices connected to the network Xbox360, iTouch, 2 laptops, 1 desktop 2 x ps3′s ….. imagine all the wiring ????
You don’t have to hate sooo much CAD ?? I must say that comment “ps3 ripped almost every feature on the 360″ Thats a bit rich m8, considering everyone knows that MS is well known as the “idea ripper king” MS hardly has an original idea of it own to scratch together….. “Apple v Windows” comes to mind here !!!!
Because a console comes after the other means does that mean it has copied the first one to come out ….. If thats the case then the orig xbox copied the ps2. While we are on it, do you really think that MS hasn’t stripped the Wii bare of it’s original ideas? (Sony is in the same boat here)
December 10th, 2009
good point CAD. I forgot about wifi. Thats another nice bullet point in the PS3′s favor adding value to the consumer.
The wireless connection also allows for remote play between the psp and the ps3.
Blu ray in a laptop? Why? To even notice the difference you want a 40″ screen. Having Blu ray on your HDTV is easily the better choice than a laptop.lol
December 10th, 2009
oops, one too many “means” in there …. doh
December 10th, 2009
You could use the laptop to connect to your large HDTV though.
December 10th, 2009
True Spidey, but coming from a guy that would not use his already connected to HDTV game system for a Blu ray player this seems unlikely.
I’d also like to point out that by CAD having Blu ray in his laptop he’s clearly not against the technology.
This is another person showing the overall value/features in the PS3 has by having it (BRD) included.
December 10th, 2009
The 120gb PS3 slim in the UK at least is still significantly more expoensive than the 120gb Xbox Elite with 2 games & 2 controllers.
The difference is £189 v £245 ($308 US/$336 AUS v $399 US/$435 AUS).
The 250gb PS3 slim retails at between £269.99 and with Assassins Creed 2 £389 ($438 – $633 US to $478 – $691 AUS).
The 250gb Super Elite Forza bundle for Xbox retails at £249 ($405 US/ $442 AUS).
Whilst I am fully aware that prices do not automatically carry across in a simplistic way the point is that at every stage and with all the options considered Xbox remains the singificantly less expensive option.
With Xbox having the winning gaming & on-line features
(and it seems to me it’s only the PS3 owners who keep claiming PSN is ‘as good’ as XBL, everywhere else I keep on reading that XBL is the superior on-line service).
Blu-ray?
Pfffhhhh.
In my opinion you’re better off going for a dedicated stand-alone.
Combo units aren’t the best idea in my view, one little breakdown & you’ve lost games and movies.
Wi-fi?
I actually do not want it so I’m glad to have the choice not to have to buy it.
Games (and on-line), as oldschool1987 so rightly says, are where it’s at.
Video playback, however good is a distant 2nd best now that stand-alone devices are so cheap and well spec’d.
(and yes in my view that does apply to high definition streaming on the Xbox too……although that instant 1080p streaming does negate a huge chunk of that Blu-ray appeal – given that most don’t have the TV or audio kit to properly use and receive the full benefits of the max Blu-ray spec it really does not matter, for most, if it is technically the very slightly inferior choice for high def).
Interesting that after all the heat & noise about things improving for the PS3 and despite the last couple of games the PS3 gang would have us believe are such an incredible & obvious improvement on what has gone before the difference between the 2 consoles is still described as marginal.
I agree with Spidey here tho, “regardless of what you buy, you would be happy with either”.
Although obviously I have my own clear preference for which of the 2 I have been happy to put my cash down on.
250gb Xbox Super Elite Forza bundle was the clear winner for me.
I already have a top spec Blu-ray player and I don’t want wireless so those features mean nothing to me but money wasted on bit I do not wish to buy again.
December 10th, 2009
Funny when the 360 does loose something the fan boys com out and start crying, saying the PS3 as copied everything. The fact is every company copies another, very ignorant saying the PS3 is the only one lol.
December 10th, 2009
Everyone is going to have a preference. Value to one person will mean something different to another. As HH pointed out, he has different priorities and different “wants” when it comes to the gaming or entertainment he wants. He bought to suit his needs/tastes
It’s all in the “eye of the beholder” I suppose.
I am happy to have the choice of systems and to even own both. Far better than only having one console to choose from, that would be massively over priced and have little value with no competition.
This thread does produce good flame bait though ….. Dave PARRACK

“Blu ray in a laptop? Why? To even notice the difference you want a 40″ screen”
this is so true. the applies if you want to notice the difference between 720p and 1080p. you will need at least (minimum) a 40″ HDTV
December 10th, 2009
Spidey is right,
I have use wi-fi since day 1 and I have yet to experienced a wireless connection issue. I also have many electronic devices at home all using wi-fi.

“Blu ray in a laptop? Why? To even notice the difference you want a 40″ screen.”
Actually to ‘see’ 1080p you need over 50″ at normal viewing distances.
Viewing distance is why high definition on a Laptop or PC can still make sense, instead of sitting a few meters/yards away you tend to sit very close to your PC/Laptop monitor.
This illustrates the point very well, it’s all about your biology & the physics (which you cannot argue with).
Of course this is relative which is why replacing a 32″ TV with a 40″ 1080p TV will deliver a noticeable improvement (and many if not most find this hard to believe) –
h**p://carltonbale.com/1080p-does-matter
phranctoast
“Having Blu ray on your HDTV is easily the better choice than a laptop”
Assuming the Laptop has a high enough resolution to show 1080p properly then that is not necessarily so, not if the TV is (like the majority of current installed HD TVs) a 720p/1080i set it between 32″ – 50″
(the majority of HD TVs sold up to Sept 2008, at least, were 32″ – 50″ 720p – 1080i sets so it will be some time before the installed base is mostly 1080p.

@Happyhockum: YOu know you can get a 120GB PS3 for £199 and a 250GB with 4 decent games (and PlayTV) for £249 in the UK?
It’s £10 more for Blu-Ray, Wifi, free online gaming, better quality visuals and visuals (HDMI 1.3c, 7,1 audio), rechargable controllers etc..
December 10th, 2009
even at 720p, it is still better then watching on a laptop 19″-22″ screen specially if you have a home thearter to go with it
December 10th, 2009
So in with happy’s logic I really don’t need a 360 as I have a ps3 and a PC. The PC covering most of the great exclusives not available on the PS3. At the same time the online is better, cheaper, and the graphuics far surpass.
I agree with your logic.
btw. Spidey is right.
Thanks for all the feedback. I still can’t figure out why a Video techniphyte is arguing the benefits of watching blu ray on a laptop, but I understand we need to disagree at every turn so I commend you on that.
December 10th, 2009
OK so for all the idiots out there who can’t understand why I would prefer my Bluray player in my laptop and think that I’m limiting myself to a 17″ screen, let me remind you of a cord called HDMI that runs from the Laptop to the 42″ HDTV. I hope that clears that up.
December 10th, 2009
I have been having Wi-fi issues but it is my router.
The laptops have the same problems.
I’m going to replace it after x-mas.
I have a similar list of connections as Spidey.
3 laptops, one desktop, ipod touch, 2 PS3s and a Wii.
Wires are not always possible.
December 10th, 2009
“Assuming the Laptop has a high enough resolution to show 1080p properly then that is not necessarily so”
Right that is because it’s capable of 1080P and Dolby Digital 5.1
December 10th, 2009
so everytime you want to watch a BD movies you have to drag you laptop from one place to the other, setup all the cables, open the media software that plays bd movie, wait for it to lead, the set it for full screen.
talk about PITA….right HH?
December 10th, 2009
Not really Roca, if anything it’s a portable BD player. One cable connection, switch tv to correct input and away you go. Not really that much more than a stationary player, I think anyways. I would be interested in having a BD drive in my laptop actually.
December 10th, 2009
Oh Roca why do you make things so hard. Yes that is exactly what I’m going to do. Except in My case my laptop is mostly in my living room anyway and yes I would connect it to the already exsisting single HDMI Cord not cords and hit play just like any other device. Since when do you need to open a media program to play a disk. Dude do you own a computer? Anything put in the tray will automatically play. It’s not that hard Roca. You took the time to setup and load your PS3 so what is the difference.
December 10th, 2009
Spidydog Thank You!! Roca is going on like I said I bought a Desktop COmputer. Laptop dude, those portable computers that are light and easy to carry in one arm.
December 10th, 2009
im was just saying be cause I remember HH, CAD and Kev talking shit about BD and now all 3 have BD player.
what are the odds!?
December 10th, 2009
@CAD
December 10th, 2009
what happen to lock_down? he use to be a regural here.
does anybody has his PSN name?
December 10th, 2009
This really just goes to show. No one gives a shit about my opinions or preferences as well as CAD’s or Happy’s.
You do have to realize though, that what you do at no point eliminates the perceived value/features of the PS3.
Whether you use it or not, it’s there and both systems cost the same.
and as I said before.
“I’d also like to point out that by CAD having Blu ray in his laptop he’s clearly not against the technology.
This is another person showing the overall value/features in the PS3 has by having it (BRD) included.”
and Roca said.
“im was just saying be cause I remember HH, CAD and Kev talking shit about BD and now all 3 have BD player.
what are the odds!?”
Blu ray is in the PS3 and that’s not changing.
All it shows is your unbelievable attempts at knocking the PS3 for including more than the 360 while costing the same.
December 10th, 2009
phew… training class over. Now I have to pre-screen interviewees at 1pm est.
Day is moving I tell ya.
December 10th, 2009
If you don’t need your PC to mobile, you can have a desktop with 3x the power of a laptop that costs half as much as the laptop.
December 10th, 2009
What’s supposed to be so PITA about running high definition from a Laptop/PC to an HD TV anyways?
As Spidey said, it’s a simple cable connection.
Before most high def players appeared my first high def playbacks were TV captures downloaded & played from my PC using a component cable and 5.1 audio, no big deal and very definitely true high definition.
2 cables.
phranctoast
You’ve obviously confused things here somewhat.
If your Laptop has a high resolution screen (and most don’t) then watching a Blu-ray on it at the sort of distance you’d be doing that (1ft – 2ft away) then my point was that you would be able to see and benefit from the high definition.
You’ve obviously preferred to focus on that (despite it being factually correct) rather than my broader comment that most who think they are benefitting from high definition really are not, certainly not fully.
But as you said, you feel you have to seek out poiints to argue about.
Obviously either way, until the latest HDMI bitstreaming video cards, you’d not be benefitting from lossless audio.
Plainly this is another benefit many claim but actually few actually get simply because they do not have the necessary audio equipment of a high enough standard.
You head is well and truly lodged in your fundament if you honestly believe “PS3…..costing the same” (as Xbox).
That’s simply BS.
December 10th, 2009
“What’s supposed to be so PITA about running high definition from a Laptop/PC to an HD TV anyways?”
I was just making fun of you because you made a big deal about setting the audio on the PS3…when it is as simple as pluging in the cable.
“If you don’t need your PC to mobile, you can have a desktop with 3x the power of a laptop that costs half as much as the laptop”
I personally hate laptops (unless is for business purposes) because the cost more and offer less. also they are more difficult to upgrade than your regular desktop and upgrades also cost more.
December 10th, 2009
If I misunderstood your intention I apologize.
Can’t speak for the majority, but I am now an owner of a full 1080p hdtv. My last one was going the way of the dodo.
The article posted was a year old. Maybe peoples preferences based on price have changed slightly withing the year with prices dropping to make room for LED.
Only time will tell.
December 10th, 2009
@HH
While I agree that using identical video feed, viewing distance is the only variable between quality of image at different size of screens. But quality of imgage is not the only goal, and viewing distance has a strong effect on the comfort in viewing the same quality. The closer you are to the screen, the harder it is on the eye muscles, using the tip of your nose as a polar example. How long can you hold you focus on the tip of your own nose? The farther away viewing surface is, the easier it is to maintain focus.
I find watching movies on my 22″ screen tiring compared to watching them on my 42″ screen. Technically my monitor has better quality (refresh rates, gtg, contrast ratios etc) but I still find it more comforable on my eyes to use the TV.
But for gaming it doesn’t really matter (for me anyway) as I don’t forcus on the movement, but on a single point in the middle of the screen and let my peripheral take in the whole image with a bit of a “loose” focus. My eyes rarely move when gaming, as opposed to watching a movie or TV. Maybe its just me, maybe everyone is like that, i dunno, but I can game for equally long on both screens before eye fatique sets in.
Maybe I am just old.
December 10th, 2009
Roca
Actually the PITA comment about setting up audio on the PS3 slim was not regarding regular audio but getting it to bitstream HD audio.
My understanding of it is that this requires going through the various options & making several choices, it is not just as simple plugging in a cable.
But then I’m betting yours is set to output audio by an optical cable because you reckon that is the best audio you can get.
So what would you know about it anyways?
December 10th, 2009
thanks happy. You reminded me that I also need a new receiver. shit!
December 10th, 2009
phranctoast
The age of the article is relevant, it indicates that until very recently (when 1080p TVs became common even amongst the 32″ – 40″ sizes) the majority of TVs sold were 720p/1080i.
Of course right now the majority of TVs sold are 1080p (they would have to be, seeing as so few 32″+ TVs are now not 1080p).
Nevertheless that means that for a while yet the majority of HD TVs out there will be 720p/1080i.
This applies to the size point too which I do see changing anytime soon, people just do not have the space nor – if they are anything like my Mrs and most people I know – the inclination to go beyond a 50″ size.
December 10th, 2009
make a big deal about the audio all you want..last time I checked YOU ran aways from the graphics argument (visual) which is more important.
can you provide an answer yet? or you are waiting for x720 game?
December 10th, 2009
“the majority of TVs sold were 720p/1080i”
why is that??? because they were cheaper. right. this kill the argument on why the 360 has been outselling the PS3 in america.
December 10th, 2009
phranctoast
Don’t forget the high-end speaker package, otherwise (regardless of which little lit signs flash up on your HDR) you will not be getting the full range of lossless audio presented properly.
Sorry to be the bearer of that kind of (expensive) bad news.
But.
Top audio is, for me, one of the real pleasures of the whole high definition thing.
Music video is superb – and you are basically getting the audio as it comes off of the sound engineer’s desk.
Go on, invest in the whole kit & kabodle, get your neighbours to really hate you!
One thing about a really good speaker package is that they do not really become obsolete over time (so long as you look after them, and at the price they’ll cost you, you will).
I’d be interested in hearing how you get on with all that.
Good luck.
December 10th, 2009

Typical lie.

December 10th, 2009
“Typical lie”
so you if I was ask your opinion on which game you think looks better than Uncharted 2 you will actually answer it? or will you run away like last time.
because you did say that U2 is not the best looking game so you must have something to back up your claims.
……dont run away this time and let me know when I can expect an answer, 2016 maybe?
December 10th, 2009
Unfortunately, a new water heater comes first. I’m on borrowed time so to speak. Followed by wood floors in the Den and Hallway.
Maybe I can squeeze it in between the new Floors and the Deck I’m going to build.
Being a new homeowner is expensive
December 10th, 2009
Don’t bother Roca. It’s a lost cause. Most reviewers and people that played/actually saw the game disagree with him anyway. Just watch what the Xbots on Cnet said…..
December 10th, 2009
i know its a lost couse. I just want to die laughing when he say something like “ODST looks better”
lol….no signs of HH already. then he will come back and change topics
December 10th, 2009

Get over it.
I do not agree that U2 is either the best looking video game I’ve ever seen nor does it appear to me to be the best video game ever.
You disagree.
Good for you.

Hilarious how you think this gives you licence to just lie about what I’ve said previously tho.
Pathetic and utterly predictable but hilarious.

Sadly that is the nature of the beast, get ready for it because it never stops.
They don’t call it ‘the money pit’ for nothing.
Mind you, closing the door on the world and having a place genuinely all of your own is a very niove feeling – and when you own it out-right it get better and better.
Water heaters are news here in the UK, the Gov has just announced a ‘scrappage scheme’ to give buyers of brand new ones an incentive to replace old & inefficient heaters with new ones.
Unfortunately we just put in a new condensing one (they are well worth it & save a fortune on our heating oil bills) put in last year.

December 10th, 2009

can you elaborate on it? can you at least say which game on the 360 looks better. you just going to keep saying “I dont agree that U2 is the best looking game” with nothing to back up your claim.
but what can I expect from a guy who got a leak from a samsung guy that BD was going to last 5 more years (as of 2008), also from the guy complaining about BD yet he still owns one.
but anyways, ppl here will like to hear about the game that looks better than Uncharted…maybe we can agree with you…who knows

I see no point in having an argument about this, you are adamant that you think U2 is the best game and the best looking game ever.
Great, I’m happy for you.
Enjoy.
I just see no point in wasting time discussing the matter with you.
To what possible end?
I’d suggest a few titles and you’d disagree
(despite never having played them or perhaps even seen them…..but apparantly to a hypocrite like you review, screenshot & video clips only work when it’s a PS3 owner wanting to comment on an Xbox game, Xbox owners are never afforded the same courtesy).
You’d make a big performance of how anything I said would have to be wrong with your customary range of idiotic jibes.
So, why would I bother?
You made your bed with this, lie in it.
I don’t want to discuss it with you.

You’ll pay a little more getting a condensing boiler but believe me they are well worth it.
When I got our new one last year the price of a new old-fashioned standard boiler (of the size we needed) was about £500, the condensing one was £780.
We got a great deal because we know people at the builder’s merchants but even so you get the idea of the relative differential.
I reckon we’ve easily made that extra initial cost back in oil we haven’t burned over this year and from now on in it’s all just additional real savings.
If you’re on gas or solid fuel it’ll still save you a ton of dosh, the boiler does it’s stuff whatever the fuel used in it.
December 10th, 2009
“I’d suggest a few titles”
soo, it is not just one game, there are a few game according to HH that looks better than U2…please amuse me by naming the “few titles”.
I will love to hear about it.
December 10th, 2009
Roca
I already mentioned a few titles I rate for graphics (and no, I do not think and never have said that I think that makes them ‘the best games ever’ either) in a previous thread.
For eye-candy that borders on photo-realistic graphics during in-game play Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation is one of my favs.
Gears 2 is still a class act.
Forza 3 is outstanding too.
Halo 3 and OSDT look superb.
The wheel will turn again as Halo Reach is about to push the Xbox bar higher.
You don’t agree?
Go on, amaze me.
December 10th, 2009
so in your honest opinion ODST, Gears and FM3 look better than Uncharted.

Yeah, like I said, you don’t agree.
Big deal.

you will have a hard time finding someone to agree..
btw, I didnt say anything. you just proved where your roots are

At best you have a matter of personal opinion & the differences – if you can honestly see any – are tiny.
Agree/diagree I really don’t care.

“and as I said before.
“I’d also like to point out that by CAD having Blu ray in his laptop he’s clearly not against the technology.
This is another person showing the overall value/features in the PS3 has by having it (BRD) included.â€
Phranctoast
As much as bluray adds value to the PS3 it does not excuse the fact that Sony used the PS3 as a Trojan Horse for Bluray and ditched Game Development to win a Format war which basically made the PS3 the most expensive Console to ever come out. Lets face facts you didn’t buy a PS3 to play movies you bought it to play games. Bluray should have been introduced as a Bluray Player and nothing else. Bluray does not change gaming in any way so it really was not needed for the PS3 to be sucssfull and now they lose money on every purchase And Bluray will never be what DVD was. The way the industry is going disk will be a thing of the past in the next generation of consoles. So Bluray ultimately becomes a waste of R&D as downloads are the futrue.
Also just because I have a Bluray now does not mean I’m going on a Bluray movie shopping spree. I only have it because it was such a great deal with the Laptop and it will serve as convience when ever I get a bluray to play or rent but my habits are more for On Demand through my 360 or my Cable Provider. The 1080P Streaming is fantastic and I love how the 360 allows for Previews so I can check out the movie. My Cable provider does not provide previews. My Bluray will follow the path of my DVD Player which basically collects dust. At least the Laptop won’t collect dust though.

“you just proved where your roots are”
Hilarious coming from you.
My “roots2 are actualy in PC gaming…..which had a level of graphics far beyond any of the consoles (on a decent rig).
Maybe that’s why your vocal devotion to U2 just looks ridiculous to me.
I never said it was a bad game nor a bad looker, I do think that (just like the old Jet Set Radio game) it looks a little different (and not in a photo-realistic graphics way).
You think it’s ‘wow’ I don’t.
Nevermind.
You’ll get over it.
December 10th, 2009
of course they are your “own personal opinion”! like I said you just proved alot.
the critics must have missed something because they crowned U2 as the best looking game this Gen so far.
Ace Combat 6, Gears 2, ODST and FM3?? do they really stand a chance?
but hey I cant blame you…thats all you got
December 10th, 2009
Roca
Here we go, another totally opinionated & utterly pointless argument you spent an age asking for.
They are your own personal opinions too you know.
The judgement of ‘best’ is far from universally in favour of U2, or a proven fact.
Contrary to your continual assertions.
Sadly all you’re left clutching is a pricey console with a couple of top games and a video format.

The Xbox360 has yet to grace us with a game that is graphically superior to PS3 games.

December 10th, 2009
@CAD
the story is clearly about what system someone should buy. Simply by saying it adds value was enough for me. All the other stuff mentioned is the reason sony is in last place
this gen. There’s really no argument there as it’s simple
logic that the most expensive console would sell the worst in comparison.
I was looking into Blu Ray tech prior to the 360 launch. In
fact I was at a trade show at Jacobs javits center months before the 360 launched checking out hddvd tech first hand.
When it was anounced that the ps3 would have blu Ray tech it solidified my decison to go with that console. Win win as I said before.
December 10th, 2009
The PS3 does offer the better value at this time.
Roca,
I guess they honestly believe this. The advantage that we have is that we have actually experienced the graphics of both systems in high definition. The Xbo360 does have good graphics but it just falls graphically behind the PS3.

December 10th, 2009
Twilight – The Xbox360 has yet to grace us with a game that is graphically superior to PS3 games.
I aint too sure the Xbox 360 can achieve this.
I however value gameplay over visuals. It’s a game, so I ain’t all that worried if it doesn’t look realistic. I’m only care about how fun/enjoyable the game in question is.
And yes, I think either U2 or KZ2 is currently the best looking game on the market.
December 10th, 2009
You know its not just ‘this machine has X power so the video should look X good’
Ever wonder why Soul Calibur always looked better than anything else around?
December 10th, 2009
I think the decision as to what machine to gets does boil down to opinion. I.e, what types of games people like, what franchises they like to follow etc. For example, I chose the 360 as my first console of choice because I love the Halo franchise, and the original Gears was fantastic. From there games such as Mass Effect, Left 4 Dead etc came along and it justified my decision.
Others would be taking other factors into account. Things such as wanting to watch blu-ray movies, and some Sony based franchises that they want to follow, and would buy a PS3 instead.
It all comes down to opinion. And although price is pretty much neck-a-neck in the states, there still is a disparity over here. For example, in the piles and piles of junk mail I seem to be receiving in the post lately, I found that the Elite is going for as low as $430 with Lego Batman, Pure and AC bundled. The 120gb PS3 is normally going at around $500 with UFC or AC bundled. The 250gb U2 PS3 is going for $600. So there still is a bit of a price jump that would need to be considered too over here.
Anyway, that’s my 2 cents. If you don’t agree with me, then you’re wrong.
December 10th, 2009
Ok there are a few things I want to say…
The things about 720p/1080P and screen size is true. You really won’t notice 1080p as much on a smaller screen.
About PS3 having a blu-ray player inside? Who gives a damn? I am a gamer. I love movies too… I have 300+ dvds. If I said I didn’t love movies I would obviously be lying. But you know what.. I have a DVD player for my movies. Any gamer should realize that watching a movie on your system is just more wear and tear on it and can just cause it to wear out quicker. Why cut short the precious life-span of any video game system like that?
The facts are simply that DVD players have been really cheap for years now, even the newer upconvert DVD’s are reasonably priced. And blu-ray is not as expensive anymore either, with the possibility that prices will drop even further soon. Not to mention that prices for blu-ray movies are still just a bit too pricey for most people, and it’s not like EVERY movie benefits from being on BR either. Lets be real here for a second. If you plan on buying a comedy or a drama do you really need to buy it on BR? It’s not like the movie will benefit from the extra space on a BR disc or even the better picture quality… I mean it’s only a comedy. I can understand if it is an action movie, like Transformers or Spider-man though… I think that BR only really becomes useful for action movies.
I never watched any DVD’s on any of my game systems, and I wouldn’t use the PS3 for BR’s either. To be honest, I haven’t even used my PS3 much at all as it is. That’s not to say that I don’t like it, it’s just that I prefer to play games on my 360. I own MGS4, Uncharted, Valkyria Chronicles, Folklore, Demon’s Souls, and Resistance. I only seriously played MGS4 (and beat it) but only put a few hours into the other games. The only one I really can’t get seriously into is Resistance. Considering I put alot of time into CoD:MW on 360, which is way better, i just couldn’t get into Resistance.
I’ve seen it mentioned here about problems with the Wi-fi on PS3 and i can say that this is a FACT. Anyone can go to the PS3 forums and see it for themselves. The PS3 seems to have problems with connections and staying connected to alot of different wi-fi enabled routers. There is actually quite a list there… Probably the most common of these is the Linksys WRT54G router. I know, because I have this router in my house and I experience the same problems. There is a workaround… but you have to manually configure the setting in the router and PS3 to allow it to go through properly.
As for my opinion… I think the 360 is a better system overall. Both systems are very nice but it comes down to a few things for me. 360 hooked me with games like Gears of War, the first Saints Row, and Dead Rising (I know that SR2 is not an exclusive, and that DR2 will also be on PS3) before the PS3 even came out. Anyone can tell by the games I own for PS3 that I really love RPG’s and so far there is alot more RPG’s on 360 than on PS3. Dunno how Sony screwed up here.. since PS2 was an RPG-lovers dream, and Xbox was like a desert… But that changed with this generation.
There is a couple things that I do dislike about PS3… the controller is not as comfortable as it should be. PS2 feels better compared to it… I do prefer the 360 controller though.
Also I hate DLing things on the PS3. DL seem to be slower than 360, AVG file sizes are seem to be bigger… then on top of this, when you are finally finished DLing something you have to friggin install it too! WTF! On 360 I can just DL it and that’s it. I don’t feel like sitting around for several minutes while it is installing when I don’t have to do that on the 360. Heck even on my PC and I can other stuff on it while something is installing.
That’s all I have for now…
December 10th, 2009
CAD “there is no way that the PS3 wins on Features when you consider that they ripped almost every feature on the 360″ Ohhh for fucks sake here we go again and your fucking 360 is the best shit.
Don’t make me dig out your fucking list and shove it up your ass again you fucking fanboy.
What’s that…what list you say??? Remember that list of MS ‘innovations’ that you prepared that the majority were innovations that you freely acknowledged was more about Nintendo?
Sony & MS all copy shit from each other AND Nintendo you fucking halfwit, but of course you conveniently forget that.
As for Wi-Fi, I have my PS3, my PC, a netbook and my mobile phone all running wirelessly and never had an issue playing games online on either the PS3 or the PC.Given modern Wi-fi technology maybe the day of wired being the best is becoming not so true anymore.
Ohh by the way congrats to the Aussie inventors that have given the world Wi-Fi technology.
December 10th, 2009
Oh yeah.. I did remember something else…
PS3 has annoying mandatory installs on some games. Not to mention that the disc reads times on bluray are rather slow, which was the main reason for the mandatory installs.
I also forgot to mention how friggin awsome MGS4 was and definately is a must have PS3 game. And Demon’s Souls is really awsome too, although it is totally friggin hard… I couldn’t count the number of times I had my rear end handed to me.
Also I want to say that I am not calling the PS3 a piece of crap here, I am just stating some facts, with my opinions added for all to see.
If a game is multiplatform I will most likely buy it for my 360, unless it has some really good PS3 exclusive DLC that would change my mind… It has to be something better than the Joker pack for Batman though… That just won’t cut it.
The PS3 does have some really awsome exclusives… I have not bought infamous yet but you can bet that that is on my list of PS3 games I will get. Also I plan on eventually getting the God of war collection, Uncharted 2, and maybe I will even get Little big planet for my girlfriend…

Fantastic deals.
No wonder they’re saying Xbox is selling 3:1 ahead of the (still) expensive PS3 slim this year.
December 10th, 2009

They are some great deals. At least MS always puts out some awsome bundles every year around christmas time. I know that I look forward to that every year.
A few months from now everyone will have traded in the games that came with the bundle and I can pick them up cheap. I got the Lego Indiana Jones/Kung Fu Panda, Forza 2/Marvel Ultimate Alliance bundles very cheap because of that.
December 10th, 2009
i was referring to the better value but both are very addicting consoles
December 10th, 2009
Yes roca, we’ve already been through this, but I will go ahead and quote the article via your link”
“Xbox 360 finished with the highest number of positively-reviewed titles (88 games receiving a Metascore of 75 or higher)”
2009= Year of the 360 AGAIN when considering the above quote ONLY (better luck next year AGAIN). HOWEVER, PS3 has made significant improvement and is still a great value in it’s own right.
After having had and enjoyed the PS3 for about 3 months now, I can honestly say I still prefer the 360, and would still get one instead of a PS3 if I was a new console buyer. Why? Because I would be in the market for a game console first, everything else would be second or peripheral. I do not need or desire wi-fi/bluetooth capability in my game consoles, I enjoy achievements across all present gen titles, not just this year’s, I do not see a huge disparity in quality between HD streaming/1080p downloads and blu-ray, and I am a Netflix subscriber that prefers the XBL interface greatly. I also see a ton more free trials/demos on XBL for it’s games when compared to PSN. Any updates or patches are downloaded and installed at the same time (usually in less time) via XBL when compared to PSN, which not only requires a separate download and install, but often a system restart as well. 360 also has full last gen backwards compatibility, whereas currently retail available PS3′s do not.
That said, considering those features that do not directly translate to those who really only care about games in their game console: the PS3′s form factor is superior to 360′s. The PS3′s hard drive swap ability is superior to 360′s, especially considering 360 proprietary hard drive prices. Wi-fi/bluetooth is included (though I personally have no need for it). Limited web surfing is available (they took away Hulu?) and PS3 plays Blu-ray discs (even though it can’t remember where you left off in the disc if you go back to the XMB).
I also enjoy PSOne classics and the ability to play these on the PSP. I may have enough time to actually finish one in transit to my next duty station.
These quality differences are minor though, and very subjective to the individual gamer’s needs/circumstances. You can’t go wrong with either of these systems, neither of them is clearly superior, each of them has it’s own strengths and weaknesses, and both the 360 and PS3 have made great strides to offer more in the way of great games and better value for a significantly lower price. If you can afford to own both and have the time to enjoy the best of both then do so.
December 10th, 2009
It’s December 2009. Not 2007. At this point in time, PS3 is the better value and quality, and it has a better exclusive line-up. For the average gamer. I’m not even being a fanboy in that statement, you just need to compare. For 2009, PS3 is pretty much as far ahead as the 360 was in 2007.
Pick up whatever console you want, but make sure you know what you’re getting, and don’t fall for any internet stereotypes.
I’m talking about the facts here. It all comes down to opinion. Every single bit. Believe it or not, there are triple-console-owners who enjoy the Wii a lot more than the other systems.
And remember: opinions are like assholes. Everyone has one and they’re all shitty. Thank you very much.

“The PS3’s hard drive swap ability is superior to 360’s, especially considering 360 proprietary hard drive prices”
I don’t go along with this.
I know that at face value it looks like that ought to be correct but upon reflection I actually think I prefer the Xbox route.
PS3 offers 20gb, 40gb, 80gb, 120gb and 250gb hard drives and all but the last 2 surely need swapping out.
So you have to buy a hard drive anyways.
Xbox meanwhile also requires you to buy an external hard drive so as to have decent space for movies, music & pics.
The thing is that with HFS+ Xbox loses the 4gb FAT32 file size restriction.
PS3 cannot do this – except on it’s internal drive.
So, whatever PS3 internal drive you have, if you wish to use it for good quality (8gb+) HD encodes you are going to find space is at a premium and a hassle.
Especially the 20/40/60/80gb owners.
That is, I think, a major problem for PS3 pwners who wish to use the ability to play HD encodes.
Saber_HAHAha
I don’t know what price-lists you’ve been looking at but I find it hard to believe that the UK’s pricing is unique.

@Happy
I don’t really know any of the Christmas bundles, I’m just talking about the standalone console. Here in Canada, both are $300. I think PS3 takes the cake in terms of value, as the console itself has more included. I don’t use wi-fi often, but I want it around, and the blu-ray is an awesome addition to a gaming console. It is generally accepted as being capable of more in terms of hardware (depending on how you look at it, I’m comparing raw power right now. The 360 is more powerful than the PS3 in certain ways, and easier to make games for). It is smaller, quieter, power-brickless, and more reliable. I know that some regions have different pricing, though.
I’d rather not get into a huge argument about pricing. Especially concerning technical stuff. If you believe that the 360 is a better buy, I can respect and relate to that.

“For the average gamer.”
Sorry Saber, but you (and I) can really only speak for yourself and your own subjective needs/desires. But it was an interesting opinion piece. And it really doesn’t matter if you (or I) “are talking about the facts here”, because you (and I) already failed to mention many, and even if you did not, only a few would really matter to the individual “average” gamer, including which exclusives, genres, features, etc. that they prefer, need, or desire.
In this regard, neither console really holds a clear advantage overall, and both are great values in general. Yes, you prefer PS3 in your own opinion, and yes I prefer 360 in mine (though I still enjoy and recommend both). Neither is “right” or “wrong”, and I can still respect and relate to your opinion.

The thing is, the deal you posted gave 1 full recent game.

Harry,
I used to work at a store. I would get asked all the time “which system is better?” I would always advise people to buy a system according to the type of games that they like. If they asked, I would discuss the pros and cons of all the systems. In the end,it is all about the games. It doesn’t do a person any good to have a system when all the games they want to play are on another system.

Grow up & wake up, there’s no such thing as ‘future proof’.

That’s also a good point happy… I did forget to mention that not only did 360 have “the highest number of positively-reviewed titles (88 games receiving a Metascore of 75 or higher)” this year, but still has 95 more positively-reviewed titles than PS3 overall.
2005-9 = Years of the 360 as far as overall positively reviewed titles go, maybe next year the PS3 can start to close that gap, but I still believe both are great values in their own ways.
@Spidey,
I don’t know, but whenever I quit playback to go to the XMB, then go back to the movie (at least with Star Trek) it wouldn’t begin where I left off, it would completely start from the beginning, and I would have to skip through the previews and watch the copyright warning again. I can’t find anything to change this in the xmb video/system settings, and I do see it stores some BD data… but still no dice.

Looking at those NPD numbers it looks like the buying public agree.
The price cut & the slim undoubtedly did a lot for the PS3 brand but I wonder how this is going to work out, X-mas ’10 is another Xbox X-mas.
All the commentators I’ve seen on this reckon another restructuring/price-cut is coming for Xbox in the new year
(my bet is that they formalise the 120gb Elite into the slot where the 60gb Pro was and we see more Super Elite specials
- 250gb Halo Reach edition anyone?)
Hopefully they might even do a 400gb – 500gb hard drive when Natal launches in ’10.

@CarlB ….. I will look again once I decide to have another go at getting the audio to work. I am sure I saw the option somewhere. But I can definitely say that mine does remember where it’s stopped. I will get back to you.

Not that I care for sales figures, but that is a pretty early call HH. Anyways, regardless of who sells more, the ps3 will not fall back to pre-ps3 slim figures. The asking price is now more “consumer friendly” and will continue to sell well. The 360 will either match it or beat it.
December 11th, 2009
Thanks Spidey. I don’t have any BD’s as I only rent them, but will see if it does it on the next one as well and keep on looking for some option…
but it looks like it has something to do with the bd-java, and this one just happened to be one of those discs:

Spidey
I take you point but, just out of interest, have the positions ever reversed between Nov & Dec?
Surely whatever deals have done the business in Nov just get more of the same (or slightly better as the deals theselves get a minor tweak) come X-mas itself?

Dunno HH, never took that much notice. TIme will tell.
GOOD NEWS ….. my ps3 audio has returned …. WTF
@CarlB ….. Well what can I say, it seems that the BD remembering where you stopped playback function, is goooooone? It did work on my ps3 phat. I wonder if there is a difference with the slim and phat or if they took that function out of the firmware with the subsequent updates ?? I will have to look into this.
Frankly though, it annoyed the piss outta me because if I wanted to watch the movie from the beginning, previously I had to use the chapter skip button to go back to the start.

Year of the PS3 = 2009
PS3 had the highest average reviews. highest percentage of “good†reviews, and lowest percentage of “bad†reviews.
the 360 was second to only the wii in the “bad†reviews percentage and 3rd overall in the review trailing to the PS3 and the PC. and was 4th in the good review category behind the PS3, PC, and PSP.
“the PS3 console showed the best overall game quality for the year. Among other factors, five of the 10 highest-scoring games in 2009 (for any platform) were PS3 titles, including the year’s top game: Uncharted 2: Among Thievesâ€
Best PS3 title = Uncharted 2
Best 360 titles = Modern Warfare 2 (aslo available on the PS3)

XC series has the same form factors as PRO series, and supports MagicGate content protection technology as well as Access Control function as PRO series does. “Averages” and “percentages” tend to mean little when the total numbers don’t pan out roca, and neither of these really mean squat to gamers with individual preferences.
In this particular case, and speaking of those “exclusive” games rated 90 (“universal acclaim”) or above this year, PS3 had one remarkable new action adventure sequel in UC2, a sports title, a pretty shooter in KZ2, and a remake “collection” of 2 games. Whereas 360 also had a new racing sequel in Forza 3, another universally acclaimed exclusive DLC title in The Lost and the Damned for GTAIV (the top reviewed game this gen on both consoles and higher selling than UC2 and Forza3 combined -translation- very popular).
As you stated before however when speaking of GTPSP and it’s relatively low review score which is currently at 74 (mixed reviews), reviews mean little to gamers who enjoy what that particular title offers (as you stated you thoroughly enjoyed GTPSP).
We won’t go quite as low as 74 though (let alone 63 for SOCOM which you previously mentioned as well), we’ll leave it at 75 or above (more in the Dissidia, Fat Princess, Heavenly Sword window -currently at 79- which titles you also stated you enjoyed playing). Taking this 75 – 100 generally favorable reviews window, yes, the 360 still has 7 more titles, and 95 more overall, than PS3 this year.
Admittedly, this whole “year of” argument is rather silly, and neither console “takes it” completely. One will say 360 takes it because it has more well reviewed titles overall for not only this year, but also 95 more well reviewed titles since launch, another will say PS3 takes it because it had 2 more higher rated exclusive titles this year, and they really like another 4-10 that have come out since launch.
Neither is “right”, and it depends on the individual gamer, who ultimately votes with their dollar according to their own preferences. So far in this gen, and as lately as last month, those “votes” have been leaning towards 360 by a significant margin, but they may lean towards PS3 at the end of next year or afterwards. Either way, gamers win.
December 11th, 2009
“Oddly enough, the most important aspect of this particular category is not who won, but who lost. The Xbox 360 is the very clear loser in the exclusive retail games stakes of 2009 – as it was in 2008, and that’s got to be a worrying position for Microsoft”

360 has the most amount of crap behind the Wii.
Sony’s PSP and PS3 had the lowest percentage of crap.
Percentage of “GOOD†reviews
PS3 = 43%

Highest Rated Game in 2009 = PS3s Uncharted 2
“Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is not only the top Playstation 3 game of the year; it ranks first out of all games for any platform in our database for 2009″
We won’t go quite as low as to have the highest average of BAD reviewed games.

“wow..making a big deal about the PS3 not remembering where you last stop you movies…! Spidey is right….there is an option for it under “Video Settingsâ€
It’s not a big deal roca, just a minor annoyance that didn’t occur on the 360. I thought somebody here might have the answer, but apparently it does happen with some popular BD discs like the new Star Trek movie because of bd-java. Even Spidey said that option is gone with the new firmware update, I can’t find it, and even the people in the blu-ray forum above admit it is an ongoing issue. Either way I still enjoyed the movie. I wouldn’t take it too personally if I were you roca.
December 11th, 2009
“The most delusional fanboys seem to think multiplatform games are exclusive to Xbox 360 because most of multiplatform games are developed with the Xbox 360 being the lead platform (or used to). They’ll then become quick to shoot down an exclusive game bearing a similar aspect in gameplay or general public conception. Many fail to realize that PS3 gamers have the opportunity to enjoy both games regardless of exclusivity or not. Quantum Theory, the former PS3 exclusive, is now coming to 360; should PS3 owners be angry? Absolutely not, the last time I checked, Quantum was still appearing on the Playstation 3″
December 11th, 2009
I looked up the article you reverently quoted roca, it seems the overall winner according to them was the Wii, and it’s exclusives beat out both the PS3′s and 360′s. Oddly enough, you did not quote that or even link to the page. Interesting.

“360 has the most amount of crap behind the Wii.”
Hardly anybody cares about crap roca, generally speaking they usually only care about well-reviewed titles. In this regard 360 actually did have 7 more well-reviewed titles this year than PS3 and still has 95 more well-reviewed titles overall. However, each is good in it’s own right. I wouldn’t take this too personally roca.

it is just going to get better
“While 2009 was a huge year for the PlayStation 3, 2010 may be even bigger. Just looking at exclusive titles alone shows that Sony should have quite a lineup ready for us over the next 12 months.
Starting off the beginning of the year is Zipper Interactive’s 256-player online shooter MAG, which should be quickly followed by Quantic Dream’s story-driven Heavy Rain. Kratos returns in March to finish off the God of War trilogy with the much-anticipated finale, and sometime around then we should see the North American release of Gran Turismo 5 (which is slated for March in Japan). ModNation Racers should hopefully hit sometime in this timeframe as well and bring the customization and creation aspects of LittleBigPlanet to the race track.
Two other big titles don’t have release dates as close to the start of the year as those games, but if things go well we’ll also see the PlayStation 3-exclusive Agent come from Rockstar as well as Team ICO’s highly anticipated The Last Guardian.”

It depends on how they actually turn out in reality, when they are actually released, and how well Mass Effect 2, Splinter Cell: Conviction, Alan Wake, etc. do on 360. Right now I would say it completely depends on what the individual gamer prefers.

December 11th, 2009
Splinter Cell is already know to be a timed exclusive for Xbox 360. Alan Awake might never come out hopefully it does. Mass Effect 2 is own by EA now. Also we all have a PC. PS3 has true exclsuives own by our buddies at Sony corp.
Remember how awesome Too Human was LoL.
December 11th, 2009
im pretty confident 4 out 6 of the exclusive i mention will turn out just fine if not all of them…heavy rain will counter alan wake which both sound like sexy suspenseful games…2010 for ps3 clearly outweighs the 360.
December 11th, 2009
I already played MAG is awesome. Nice purchase i did there. God of War III we all know is another master piece and Heavy Rain is going to be awesome since Sony is helping out. AGENT is from Rockstar North they only make great fun must have games. Gran Turismo 5 has never disappoint racing fanatics. Sony has proven to be a top notch game developer and console maker.
December 11th, 2009

IMO Sales > Reviews, coz of three reasons
1. Xbox 360 will be the lead platform for most multiplatform games leading to less framerate issues, slightly better graphics..
2. As most multiplatform games have Xbox 360 as its lead platform, it negates ps3′s main advantage (blu-ray and to a certain extent cell processor)..
3. Getting more timed exclusive dlc’s and games
December 11th, 2009
And year to year the 360 went down in sales and the ps3 went up.
Having both consoles at such a similar price is definitely showing.
Since MS would have boasted if they outsold the PS3 the week of black Friday like they did the year before one has to figure the increase in sales are due to the $100 gift card being offered by Walmart and Amazon. Almost made me buy one, then I realized the $100 is better spent on PS3 exclusives.

Dante’s Inferno Demo:
While this game was God of War written all over it, the game is a good game and a better God of War-esque game than the likes of Bayonetta. that said, Dante is no Kratos, Dantes lacks personality and failed to impress me and it failed to create the excitement Kratos usually bring as a character.
Graphics were good and gameplay was a bit of a back step compare to GoW’s. Overall I really enjoyed the demo and Im looking foward to play the full game
December 11th, 2009
“Anyone want to make December predictions?”
Worldwide goes to the PS3, US sales will probably be close just like Nov’s.
December 11th, 2009
Damn those figures. It appears Ps3 came up a little short. I guess those $100 gift cards were too good to pass up. Oh, well to the next month…
December 11th, 2009
I agree with your assessment of Dantes Inferno. I enjoyed it more than Bayonetta probably because it more like God of War and Bayonetta is more like Devil May Cry.
They don’t even try to hide the similarities. It’s fairly blatant.
If it sound like I’m negative, I’m only being honest.
If the Full game is like the Demo I’ll be purchasing it for sure.
Now if only we can get a demo of Darksiders also.

In depth look at Dead Space 2 from Game Informer.
“So I come home from a trip and the first thing I see sitting in my mailbox back at me is Issac with a mining gun. Rad. Now there are a bunch of new screens here including dead babies, beautiful lighting effects, alien ruins, and metropolis cities under attack, but with no scanner I can only give you details. Just trust me on this: This game looks much more beautiful than the last game, and that’s saying something.
Before I continue I’d like to mention that Game Informer is doing a monthly thing on their site, however this info is quite different than the info they have up. Some of it may be old, but plenty of it is new, so this is not just a rehash of info and was personally written up by me.
Three years have passed since the events of the original Dead Space. It seems poor Isaac can’t get a break. He escaped alive from the Ishimura, but his mind came off twisted and haunted by the monsters he thought he escaped from. His task isn’t finished though. The necromorphs thought to be terminated have resurfaced for some unknown reason, but not on some lowly illegal mining ship. The break-out is taking place on a largely populated space station which has no suspecting idea what’s going on. The government has some massive scheme once again related to the Marker, and Isaac is the only man who knows how to kill these things, so Isaac is back to take on terror upon the massive space Station, the Sprawl.
Now for an interesting bit which I’m not sure fans will like or hate. It seems the makers are aware that people in the first game could only play 30 minutes to an hour always on the edge something was going to happen all the way through. Speaking as a horror fan that was fantastic, but the director talks about pacing. In other words, they clarify they are definitely not going to take any of the horror from the original game, in fact they aim to make it even scarier, but with better pacing. In other words, they want there to be times you feel and are more powerful than the enemies you’re facing thanks to some new gun, or a situation you get the leap on your foes. However, they also want situations where it feels you have to do the impossible, cornered, scared, confused and fighting to merely live. They also say they want to put more “epic” moments in the game, and jokingly talk about fighting bosses from the inside, surfing on top of a tram, and fighting a giant Sphincter. These could be real situations or they could be mere jokes, but whatever the case they are planning for some epic moments. However, they also set out to make a scary game, and they want you to know that. They are trying to make monster comings less predictable, but won’t say much more than that except they all worked as a team to make many genuine scares in the game, many original scares, and not just something popping out and loud sounds playing. They also want to make missions a lot more intuitive and interesting and not just fetch quests. More puzzles are also going to be implemented, and figuring out what to do.
Zero-Gravity is also changed up. Yes you can still run on walls and jump from railing to railing, but if you jump too far Isaac can actually take control of his direction and start drifting through space. By this he can shoot while in the air and direct the direction he’s drifting in.In other words, you won’t just be jumping from point to point but also drifting around in these segments.
They are trying new and diverse environments to keep things interesting in this game. The Sprawl makes the Ishimura look tiny, the Sprawl is an “organic, haphazardly constructed, long-term place that’s built around the remaining shards of one of Saturn’s moon-The first planet-crack ever. Like any real city it is not all built by one person. Some stuff was built up, and some areas, corporate areas, government areas, and public areas.” That Ian Milham guy (the art director of Dead Space) sure knows his stuff. Anyways, we’ll be going through shopping malls, schools, churches, and a lot more. They also say since it was a more public place, a place where people lived, there won’t be a bunch of hallways and locked doors this time. Not saying there aren’t, of course, just also a good change of environment. And Isaac won’t just be coming to a dead land, he will be seeing the infection from the very beginning. He’s there when the outbreak begins, and he’s there when all the panic and terror begins to strike the ship. Apparently they want to go with a strong sense of watching the outbreak get worse and worse and more and more people dying and more and more Necromorphs showing up the further you get into the game.
Isaac will also be introduced really for the first time. Though we played as him, his character is left very much into the backseat with very little actually known about him. For those who love anonymous avatars be warned, though for the rest of us be glad. Isaac will be speaking in this title, he will have dialogue, and he will have character. He won’t just be a man with no opinions doing everything he is told to do, he does have a mind and will, even if a big part of that is now a bit twisted in the head. He is seasoned in fighting the necromorphs and he is a veteran at fighting them, even put in charge of necromorphs by the people just because he survived the attack, people around him looking for a savior will turn to Isaac just because he lived. Isaac is out to make a difference, but can he stand the pressure put on him along with his continuously twisted mind? Apparently we’re going to have to make the call, Isaac’s judgment is not in the right light, his mind is still twisted from the first experience he had, and it’s only getting worse. As it comes along, the difference between reality and craziness may be harder and harder to differentiate. Also they want to make a bigger sense that Isaac hates doing task for other people as much as you do, especially when it feels like you’re the only one doing any work like in the first game. Also they want Isaac’s suit upgrades and customization to be much more vast and visually different this time, with much more customizable options and different styles and looks.
But now an important part of any horror game, the enemies. They say that the last game feels a lot like a haunted house; The enemies are always in the closet out to get you. In this one they want it to feel a lot more cat and mouse; You’re after them, but they’re also after you. You both are on the hunt for the other, and a lot more deeper approach. They want the enemies to be a lot smarter this time. We got the basic Necromorphs looking more twisted and bloody than ever, but we also have some new enemies never before seen. One that sticks out are dead naked children with no lips; Their teeth grin as they run around, super long claws on their hands and eyes sealed shut. They pounce on Isaac and try to pierce him with their claws. Another new monster is a skeleton of a man… Literally! His insides come out of his skin and start flopping it’s way towards you. Even more yet is a tentacled man who has giant pinchers for hands and his esophagus hanging out like a giant tongue that grabs you and drags you to it so it can cut you to tiny pieces with it’s claws. Then there’s the Stalker, an enemy that hunts in packs. The Stalkers make a chirping noise, and may quizzically and shyly peak out at you from around the corner. Cute maybe, but it’s all just a prowl, as this one distracts you a whole group comes from behind and starts piercing into your body. They are too quick to shoot and chasing them is bad since they will usually lead you to a group of them that will pounce you at once but you’ve got your own ways, like maybe purposely leading them into a pre-set proximentary mine field set up by yourself? It’s up to you to be strategic.
Oh and there’s a lot of new weapons too. They realized lots of people complained about the Plasma Cutter being too good through the whole experience. The response: Not to nerf the Plasma Cutter but to make the other weapons more awesome and the enemies more powerful. A few shown off are the likes of the Javelin Gun, which shoots enemies and pins them to the wall. Shoot a Necromorph in the chest for instance and if it rockets far enough back to make it into a wall, the Necromorph will be stuck to the wall, pinned down. The environments are also more immerse with a lot more to them, so there will be a lot more to pick up and use with your telekinesis this time. They even are working on making Telekinesis more smooth and helpful for combat, making it quicker, more fluid, and precise. An example is Isaac picking up severed blade and tossing it at a nearby Necromorph.
The controls have also been refined to be able to maneuver and control better. The game being more open overall and able to run around more and be in charge of combat lead to finer controls so you can go and make a strategy and try to be the first on the assault, and not always be the hunted. He can move a little faster, and a little more refined, but they say they are definitely still keeping it in the horror-genre way. The Dead Space and Halo series are still worlds apart. They ensure they are not trying to make Isaac a super hero, a guy who jumps, flies around and punches enemies like no ones business. They just want the controls to not be a hinderence, to feel like your failure is your own and not that of the controls. What a nice way to put it.
They also aren’t saying anything, but they say they really enjoyed the process of making the animated movie and comics and would like to continue it.
And multiplayer? He only gives us a tease. “All I can say is it’s really fun, and you’ll get to strategically dismember your friends.” Player versus human-controlled Necromorphs, anyone?”

“They don’t even try to hide the similarities. It’s fairly blatant”
if the grap button was the “circle button” instead of the “R2 button” and the block button was the “L1″ instead of the “L2″ then you could say they didnt even try to hide but I can see they “at least” tried (with the buttons) lol
December 11th, 2009
the publisher of all these games, the so called GoW clones are smart enough to release these games before GoW3 hits the shelves.
Darksiders – Jan
Blowmynutta – Jan
Dante’s Inferno – Feb
God of War 3 – March
December 11th, 2009
Roca.:
Correct you are my friend.
God of War III will obliterate these wannabe clones no doubt about it. You can’t touch Sony’s games they are just beyond perfection and truly unrivaled jaw dropping master piece.
Sony Only Does Everything.
December 11th, 2009
lol. I need to remap block.. L2 is so unnatural
December 11th, 2009
@Roca
When is the new Castlevania game due?
December 11th, 2009
Summer-Holidays 2010
but I doubt it, Kojima is working on MGS: Peace Walker right now and as we all know he likes to take his time when making a game.
looking foward to Castlevania too. I hope this will be the first 3D Castlevania game to actually translate the awesomeness of the 2D games
December 11th, 2009
Castlevania: Lords of S is due next yearhadow
December 11th, 2009
I would like to see Castlevania Symphony of the Night for PS3 remastered in 1080p 60fps and trophy plus online and co-op
December 11th, 2009
Yeah 2009 the year of the PS£, so long as you don’t count sales success against its main competitor in any way, either by unit sales or game sales.
Very funny.
phranctoast
Xbox year on year sales numbers are up…..did you just mean that Xbox sold slightly less than the vast sales numbers it had last year in Nov?
Toshi
Quite.
It is indeed amusing to see the usual suspects have to pull back from a 2 month crow about sales numbers to now giving opinions about the games.
Interesting too to see the twisting too, I have never sdaid U2 was a bad looking game, it’s obvious it is one of the nicest lookers out right now.
However.
It’s not the best I’ve ever seen.
It looks different (it looks like the sharpness, contrast and colour saturation is up to me) but ‘better’ or ‘best’?
Not to me it isn’t and I couldn’t give a flying one if ‘all’ the (mostly PS3) magazine reviews call it best.
December 11th, 2009
LOL
PS£ = PS$ = PS3
Some times a typo is so apt.
December 11th, 2009
I would to see The Legend of Dragoon and Jersey Devil plus Tomba on PS3 as a remastered remake. Sony has so many IPs is mind blowing how many games they have many and still going strong.
December 11th, 2009
“phranctoast

Yes happy.
While Ps3 sales have almost doubled from the previous year the 360 saw a drop in sales in November.
December 11th, 2009
2009 = Year of the PS3
Acording to Metacritic, 2009 look like this (by highest to lowest average review scores)
1- Playstation 3
2- PC
3- Xbox 360
4- PSP
5- Nintendo DS
6- Wii
PS3 taking the No.1 spot for having the highest amount of titles review scores above the 90s, the highest average of games with “good” reviews and the lowest average of games with “bad” review score.
the most AAA Exclusive and the Top rated game of 2009.
PS3 also topped the 360 in the lastest Cnet PS3 vs 360 match video
December 11th, 2009
@happy.
I understand your point of view when it comes to photo realistic games.
of course those games traditionally have a car models/jet models that looks really great. At the same time you have to consider what they don’t have. flying or driving the detail around that said model doesn’t need to be so great.
Who cares how many polygons are in the spectators when your zipping past them.
December 11th, 2009
So 2009 is the year of the PS3 as far as top rated games are concerned and the 2009 is the year of the 360 as far as sales are concerned.
honest question.
What matters to you guys more? better games or better sales.
December 11th, 2009
HH: “Interesting too to see the twisting too, I have never sdaid U2 was a bad looking game, it’s obvious it is one of the nicest lookers out right now.

It’s not the best I’ve ever seen”
according to you, the following games look better than U2.
-Gears of War 2
-Forza 3
-Halo 3: ODST
-Ace Combat 6
you really opened my eyes…those games really look better then U2. Idk how come U2 got “Best Graphics” at E3 when most of those games were also at E3 this year
December 11th, 2009
Phranc: “So 2009 is the year of the PS3 as far as top rated games are concerned and the 2009 is the year of the 360 as far as sales are concerned.

since we are all gamers and not stockholders…uhmmm tough question
December 11th, 2009
phranctoast
Seriously?
I think game play is the thing and there Xbox easily matches (if not betters) anything PS3 offers – and offers more of it.
Graphics?
Well as I said earlier I am not bowled over by either console especially.
What each console does is pretty good but a good PC is streets ahead
(and has been for a good 2 or more years)
U2 is a nice looking game but anyone trying to tell me it is ‘the best’ looking game is not going to get agreement from me.
Sorry but I just don’t see it as being anything stand-out at all.
(and yes I do appreciate what you’re saying about context, that still doesn’t stop it looking fake/artificial/gamey)
The Nov 2008 numbers do make an interesting comparison
- Xbox 820,000
- PS3 710,000
verses the 2009 numbers
- Xbox 819,500
- PS3 710,400
So, the most marginal ‘fall’ in Xbox sales and a minute rise in PS3 numbers.
There’s nothing there to be talking up PS3 on the basis of year on year if you ask me.
Last year there was no new revised model nor price cut for PS3 like this.
Xbox held it’s ground despite the slim & the PS price-cut.
If there is anything to make of these numbers it is that Sony has got to be extremely disappointed.
December 11th, 2009
“honest question.
What matters to you guys more? better games or better sales”
you forgot to answer this one!
December 11th, 2009

Ha ha ha ha
Yeah, when all else fails divert & wheedle around with your idiotic nonsense.
You really ought to know when to stop digging.
Get back to eating crow.
Are you so mentally challenged that you found the comment “game play is the thing” too hard to understand?
Maybe you’re another cretin who finds these things too hard to deal with……does XBL confuse you too?
December 11th, 2009
We all know ps3 has the looking games plus the most and best exclusives
December 11th, 2009
I have to point out that my numbers were incorrect.
They ought to have read
Nov 2008 numbers -
- Xbox 836,000
- PS3 378,000
Much better for Sony/PS3 of course but they still have to be disappointed that they have slid back to 3rd so quickly.
December 11th, 2009
“Maybe you’re another cretin who finds these things too hard to deal with……does XBL confuse you too?”
nope…I can see the ripoff from far away…charging for online play? I can do that on PC, PS3, PSP, PS2, DS and Wii
December 11th, 2009
So 360 has more total sales, more total well-reviewed titles and millions more playing online in the most popular games like MW2 happy? Even though 360 took it this year in those categories though, it is good to see PS3 rise a little bit more from it’s humble beginnings, even it they did not close, narrow, or even maintain that 95 title well-reviewed gap the 360 maintains and still increases. Uncharted 2 was fun though, and so are those last gen rereleases of God of War, it was good to relive the memories of the PS2 glory days.

Sadly for you, when it came to buying customers they agreed by some margin that 2009 was yet another Xbox year.
All you’re doing is casting up opinion…..which is a pi$$-poor alternative to actual earnings and sales.
I’d bet the house Sony would far rather have the sales & the cash
(and with a console, unlike the PS3 Slim, assuming the last data is accurate, that is now profitable on each sale).
December 11th, 2009
@happy.
When I said highest rated, you have to imagine gameplay and graphics are considered in the review.
December 11th, 2009
“I’d bet the house Sony would far rather have the sales & the cash
(and with a console, unlike the PS3 Slim, assuming the last data is accurate, that is now profitable on each sale).”
Ok..I’ll give you that, but what would you rather have?
December 11th, 2009
Honestly?
I’ve already got more games than I’ve played
(I have collected about 25 at a cracking price that are still in their wrapper that I’ve yet to even get around to looking at).
TBH most of this the argument is fairly pointless, both consoles offer some great eye-candy, both have some superb & deep games.
December 11th, 2009
I have 47 Disc-based PS3 and 22 PSN games.
so games for me.
Sony exceeded this year in quality, quantity and innovations. also in review scores
next year will looks to be better.
December 11th, 2009
getting Borderlands and PixelJunk Shooters today and Buzz Worlds sometimes before the end of the year
December 11th, 2009
“TBH most of this the argument is fairly pointless, both consoles offer some great eye-candy, both have some superb & deep games.”
I agree but if we agree too much what the hell (besides work) am I supposed to do all day.

It’s just an indicator of what’s ahead.
If you own an Xbox it tells you where most if not all the 3rd party devs are going to be putting their efforts.
If you own a PS3 at least you can be happy to know that Sony will be forced to fund more 1st party games – and even if their sales are poor they will keep on coming, regardless if the 3rd party game versions PS3 gets are usually 2nd best.
December 11th, 2009
So many comments. So much controversy. All by the same 10 guys.
That’s what I gotta love about Blorge.
December 11th, 2009
HH,
I don’t think I’d give a flying fuck if I was the only guy with a PS3/360 as long as decent games continue to come out for it.
December 11th, 2009
I think you guys are just point scoring.
December 12th, 2009
PS3 has “highest average of games with ‘good’ reviews”
…and lowest total number of games with ‘good’ reviews. Even the Wii beat it out.

Naaa, just having a bit of fun shoving big sticks into the spokes of the Sony drones’ PR wheel.
December 13th, 2009
Already bought the 250GB PS3 with Modern Warfare 2 over the Wii for Christmas 2009.
Why?
Because of …
RE5 Gold Edition, Resonance of Fate, FFXIII, Lost Planet 2, Metal Gear Rizing, Project Needle Mouse, Super Robot Wars PS3, Mobile Suit Gundam 0081(Yes, I am a Japanese Otacon), motion control games for my kids and last but not the least HALO Legends!
Already had the 360 Pro this September but I can’t play Halo Legends on it.
And I can’t recommend it to anyone now because of the RROD issue on the back of my mind. But If I do I will recommend XBOX 360 with a B.A.Y.O.R. WARNING! Buy At Your Own Risk!!!
This has kept me from buying another 360 as of now. I hope MS will assure me this problem will be completely resolved and perfect the hardware when Project Natal comes out. Then I will get an 250GB XBOX 360 Elite Slim with Natal Bundle at $200.00 by 2010,right?
Peace.
December 14th, 2009
“If you own an Xbox it tells you where most if not all the 3rd party devs are going to be putting their efforts”
hahaha..it certanly doesnt look that way.
FF Versus 13 (Square-Enix)
FF 14 (Square-Enix)
3D dot Heroes (From Software)
Under Siege (Seed Studios)
Heavy Rain (Quantic Dream)
Agent (Rockstar)
L.A. Noire (Rockstar)
Yakuza 3 (Sega)
Last Rebellion (Hit Maker)
Atelier Rorona (NIS America)
Dante’s Inferno Divine Editio (EA)
all are 2010 titles coming up from 3rd party developer/publisher exclusively to the PS3
they have been other big titles from 3rd party companies to be released exclusive for the PS3 like
MGS4 (Konami)
Valkiria Chronicles (Sega)
Demon’s Souls (From Software/ Atlus)
Katamari Forever (Namco)
Ferrari Challege (Activision)
and even titles that were 360 exclusive before and jumping to the PS3 now and sometimes even with extra stuff.
Ninja Gaiden II
Star Ocean 4
Tales of Visperia
Eternal Sonata
Bioshock
Dead Rising
Saints Row
Scene It
Oblivion
Lost Planet
Braid
Castle Crasher
Fallout 3 DLCs
Dead

Only you could be so deluded that you can imagine the years of Xbox sales success don;t count with 3rd party devs and their ecisions on where they put their limited resources.
Write another one of your moronic lists, it gives everyone’s scoll wheel a work out as we skim past ignoring it.

Is that Roca/Ivan’s new sock puppet?
December 14th, 2009
Wow roca, those are very short lists compared to PS1/2 when they started their fourth year, looks like Microsoft made a lot of progress since they’ve been on the market. Not only did they oust the number one console in total sales, but also favorably reviewed games total and this year alone. Not bad for a company that is relatively just starting when compared to Nintendo and Sony.
December 14th, 2009
@CarlB
I know MS made alot of progress. they have actually killed the “3rd Party exclusive” business that going on during the PS1 and PS2 days
I was just replying to HH rants [see below]
“If you own an Xbox it tells you where most if not all the 3rd party devs are going to be putting their efforts”
Im just letting him know that 3rd Party devs have been putting as effort (if not more) to the PS3 as they do for the 360.
December 15th, 2009
I had an xbox elite and sold it to get a 250gb ps3 slim, i much prefer the ps3 slim as it comes with many more great features.
i recommend the ps3 as you can browse the internet for your favourite high speed songs, online is free, built in wi-fi, blu ray player… the features are endless…
the ps3 is a more sleek and sexy design and is less noisey and has a low failure rate.
Also ps3 has a great line of games on its way that matches up to xbox 360′s standards so ps3 all the way!
December 17th, 2009
im frm india
i had horrible expirence with m$ xbox 360
really its a bad console…..i had the 60gb pro version of xbox(brought in jan 08) it got rrod within 6 months(lolzzzz) got it replaced but the new one too got rrod
rally pi**ed of.. this time around i sold of the accessories(games, controller, hdd, cables everythin) and brought my self a new ps3(40gb one)
ps3 works like charm no harware issues…..looks better makes no noise…
i had terrible xperince with 360 i think i wont ever buy any console frm m$

Not a (sock puppet) saddo drooling PS3 fanboy at all.
No really.

December 18th, 2009
nether there both plagued with poor build quality and long loadtimes and out dated controllers or no wifi or poor wifi handling
get a wii and be future proof for the future of gaming
December 25th, 2009
@ Roca
Thanks for the PS3 games list …those are interesting titles and I noticed the good Japanese made game selections which is why I got my self the PS3.
One thing I just messed up on is not waiting for the 250GB Lightning Bundle
As Chris Rock says “Its Alright because it’s all white!”
December 28th, 2009
Wifi: PS3 uses only small packets as much as 20kb, so 56mbps wifi connection is enough to play online without a hassle. I don’t know why Xbox 360 is selling an extra wifi adapter, if wifi sucks.
Bluray: Blueray is an extra feature and also a future-proof for games as it has a huge capacity compare to dvd that xbox 360 uses. Oh, I forgot the HD-DVD which is dead. Future-proof of Xbox is also dead. another point is why MS is selling for HD-DVD drive before?
Online Service: I dont know why XBL is superiority to PSN. Please give us some reason to believe. Or is it only because Xbox users paid for it and MS called it premium-elite-superb-overkill-noonecomesclose service
Hardware: You can change the PS3′s hard drive easily, while MS will rip your pocket as xbox need to be a MS made hard drive. (monopoly)
Software: You can install linux box on ps3 while xbox can’t even install windows 98.
Games: we need to admit that there are only few games that has the “WOW!” effects. so it does not matter which one has the widest library. Does anyone plays all the games in xbox or is it just the sequel of their previous games?
just my one cent.
December 28th, 2009
May I?? Even though it’s an older post….I think it’s funny that anyone can say that SONY copied anything from Microsoft when the PS2 came out before the original Xbox, which seemed to copy the PS2 except the fact that the Xbox had an internal hard drive not a memory card. And another thing….If you crack open an Xbox 360 you see SONY COMPONENTS..Imagine That. The console manufacturers feed off of one another and the fanboys that think they don’t. I own a PS3 only because I prefer SONY products. SONY has been manufacturing all sorts of electronics for many, many years. Microsoft hasn’t really established themselves as an electronic manufacturing company. I am not knocking the 360 because it is an awesome system and I would love to own one if the price was right.

well sorry guyz i am not a avid gamer.but im a loyal fan of sony corp as it had been loyal to me . i have ps3…..had xbot earlier….and it gave me headaches instead of pleasure.as the red ring of death kicked my balls…..the graphics were amazing with the xbox i agree with that…with ps3 well it just falls a bit shorter……but why opted to go for ps3….well ignorence from service center….i mean guyz i give my xbox to a service station in india and it comes after 2 months ????….for one year i was running like a head less chicken with xbox360…..with our friend microsoft helping me pull my wallet every time for accesories, online games…..i got really pissed off when i got charged by service center as they say the terms and conditions failed…enof…i dumped that crap to my cousin….and got a ps3… for the time being…but after a 8 months i had some problems with that system…but the i got it serviced in 2 days….much impressive…..i can watch movies,wi fi the net and do so many things….as they say ps3 are not for kiddos…they are for real men…as for microssoft they should concentrate on softwares…..im afraid they will c the xbox as same as they did to zune….lol salute to sony corp for under promising and over delivering….
