Time names Top 10 games of 2009

December 10, 2009

Time names Top 10 games of 2009As we approach the end of the year we’re due to be treated to a whole host of different lists meant to sum up the 12 months past. Video games are no exception, with the Spike Video Game Awards this Saturday and Blorge itself currently polling for the GoTY. But Time magazine got there first.

Time magazine is currently running a multitude of different Top 10s of 2009 lists. But we’re only interested in one. Rather than being as a result of votes or surveys, this one looks like being the opinion of the writers. Which is unfortunate for them because it means they can’t pass the buck when the criticism starts flying. And it will.

Time Magazine Top 10 Video Games Of 2009

1. Modern Warfare 2
2. Batman: Arkham Asylum
3. DJ Hero
4. Borderlands
5. New Super Mario Bros. Wii
6. Geo-Defense Swarm
7. Scribblenauts
8. Halo: ODST
9. Assassin’s Creed 2
10. Uncharted 2

I would agree with most of the Top 10 overall, but there are a few oddities. DJ Hero is an expensive flop, so what it’s doing at number three I have no idea. Geo-Defense Swarm is an iPhone game… enough said. And Uncharted 2 just scraping in at number 10? Sheesh.

As always let us know what you think in the comments. Oh, and feel free to direct your bile towards Lev Grossman and Peter Ha. Ha.

  1. Royzy:

That is an awful looking Top 10?

Modern Warfare being No.1 is expected, though wtf is with the order / inclusion of some of the others.

  2. Royzy:

‘And Uncharted 2 just scraping in at number two? Sheesh.’

Typo Dave? It’s tenth on my screen.

  3. Dave Parrack:

Well spotted Royzy – typo corrected :)

  4. phranctoast:

What I notice the most is, the people who actually played both mw2 and uncharted 2 tend to stray towards u2. It makes sense. Great mp coupled with an unforgetable sp campaign. Mw2 is great in only one of those departments.

  5. Spideydog:

Time magazine ….. obviously that list was not compiled by gamers ???!!!

  6. oldschool1987:

I’ll ignore that list completely, it was made by non gamers trying to fit in lol.

  7. Roca.:

lmaooo…Uncharted 2 barely makes the list.

  8. twilight:

So let’s get this straight.DJ Hero tops high on the list and Uncharted 2 barely makes the list. Ha!Ha! They are so funny.

  9. Roca.:

“Geo-Defense Swarm is an iPhone game… enough said”

lmaoo…this must be one of those bootleg magazines

Geo-Defense Swarm at #6 and above ODST, AC2 and U2.

  10. Bourne:

Why is uncharted 2 so low???
I expected MW2 to be number 1, not going to argue there.

Also anyone on my PSN, i haven’t been online in … months, because my PS3 YLOD’d on me during a sesh of MGS4 so i’m going to get it repaired as an XMAS present and should be online on xmas day/boxing day, depends when i get it back, can’t wait

  11. ncaissie:

    Time, LOL what a joke.

  12. Saber_HAHAha:

My IQ needs to drop a few points before I can understand this list. Mario Bros, DJ hero, and Scribblenauts above Uncharted 2.

I think they are talking about sales. Hope. At least they got MW2 in the expected place.

  13. CAD:

No not slaes as Halo would not be right on top of Unchartered 2. Then games like Madden, Fifa, and Left 4 Dead 2 would have to be there so it’s not based on sales.

  14. CAD:

Also Infamous and Forza would be there to if it was sales.

  15. CAD:

“Also anyone on my PSN, i haven’t been online in … months, because my PS3 YLOD’d on me during a sesh of MGS4 so i’m going to get it repaired”

    Bourne

That sucks dude to bad you don’t have a 3 year warrenty.

So I guess your girl is not buying you a 360 for Christmas. Dude you made me hold on to Gears for nothing.

  16. Roca.:

    uhmmm…I believed that was BJ.

  17. phranctoast:

“Also Infamous and Forza would be there to if it was sales.”

They both probably belong there due to reviews as well. I’ve seen both games on many peoples GOTY lists.

  18. JofaMang:

I love online flea markets. Made two trips and saved a big bunch of change. I bought AC2, MW2, and Infamous for a total of $60 yesterday from one kid selling his games (his mother supervised the sale, heh, kid didn’t look happy, must be a punishment of some sort, GO MOM) and after that met a dude at his work in a mall, and bought his copy of Gow1&2 for $15.

I had budgetted myself for all of these games @ new prices, (except mw2 that was a bonus find) , so got some cash left around for a few more titles yet. I think I might buy NHL10, since it has trophies, and my brother-in-law is pestering me to join him on it, and is already on sale for $40.

  19. phranctoast:

    was the GOW1&2 the collection?

  20. Roca.:

dont you feel bad after robbing that lil kid so badly. lol

    GoW Collection for $15?

  21. Kevo/Sir_Chubs_Alot08:

please say that isnt in no particular order?!?!

  22. phranctoast:

    @kevo

    I think it’s backwards ;)

  23. ViRuS:

    U2 came in tenth?

I haven’t played it personally but every review I read for it was very favourable.

MW2 isn’t a surprise in the slightest, pretty much expected that.

AC2 has been my game of the year though thus far. It would’ve been a travesty if this game didn’t make the line up.

  24. phranctoast:

Looking forward to playing ac2. I’m thinking christmas time.

  25. harry sachz:

I keep hearing good things about AC2. It wasn’t on my radar but I guess it’s going to have to be now.

  26. CarlB:

Well, I’ve only played 3 games off of the list so I couldn’t say for sure. 1&2 sound about right, I would expect UC2 to be higher though.

  27. JofaMang:

Yeah, it is the HD collection I got for 15 bucks, he said he never used the demo code for GoW3, so I got that, as well, heh.

  28. CarlB:

“because my PS3 YLOD’d on me during a sesh of MGS4 so i’m going to get it repaired as an XMAS present”

When did you purchase it Bourne?

  29. harry sachz:

MW2’s campaign, although short, was a shitload of fun.

  30. Ivan_PSP:

This list is beyond pathetic only a real non- gaming idiot could make such horrible list.

    UNCHARTED #1

  31. CarlB:

Looks like the poll agrees with #1 Ivan… btw, that’s not a title from this year. Uncharted 2 was on the list… I guess that’s what makes it horrible to you… lol.

  32. harry sachz:

    haha CarlB

  33. Ivan_PSP:

I don’t mind about the list since no one really cares for TIME.

  34. me_:

I suppose you’d respect a source like PlayStationFanboy.com more Ivan. I’m told their top 10 list consists entirely of PS3 exclusives.

  35. Ivan_PSP:

This list is a joke the way is what done but the TIME is nothing about gaming. So no one really cares for it especially not gamers.

  36. CarlB:

    @m,

I looked it up for fun:

“Playstation 3 Problems- Not To Worry
Several game consoles can be found for popular video game play. The appropriate Play station is done by Sony. Currently you have the version of Play Station 3. It is also called PS3. But you should expect problems also here. Play Station 3 problems may be there as in any electronic system.

I’m beginning to suspect Ivan may be a contributor.

  37. CarlB:

    “TIME is nothing about gaming.”
“I just saw the History channel sponsoring the PlayStation 3 with a PlayStation Network commercial sweet. Now is on mass advertising at no extra cost to Sony corp”

I suppose the History Channel has more to do with gaming Ivan?

  38. Ivan_PSP:

    Yes

  39. me_:

    @CarlB

    Thanks, great site. I like this one too;

    http://www.sonydefenseforce.com/

BTW anybody see the NPD sales figures and the nose dive the PSP took?

  40. Roca.:

    Year of the PS3 = 2009
PS3 had the highest average reviews. highest percentage of “good” reviews, and lowest percentage of “bad” reviews.
the 360 was second to only the wii in the “bad” reviews percentage and 3rd overall in the review trailing to the PS3 and the PC. and was 4th in the good review category behind the PS3, PC, and PSP.
“the PS3 console showed the best overall game quality for the year. Among other factors, five of the 10 highest-scoring games in 2009 (for any platform) were PS3 titles, including the year’s top game: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves”
    Best PS3 title = Uncharted 2
Best 360 titles = Modern Warfare 2 (aslo available on the PS3)
    http://features.metacritic.com/features/2009/the-best-games-of-2009/?tag=topslot;title;1

  41. CarlB:

Yes, manufacturers usually fall back on “percentages” when the more direct total numbers don’t represent positively, it puts a good spin on things for their shareholders.

If the PS3 ever can accomplish “the highest number of positively-reviewed titles (88 games receiving a Metascore of 75 or higher)” in the future as 360 has this year it will certainly make the news. Uncharted 2 and Infamous were definitely fun for the short time they lasted though.

Hopefully by this time next year PS3 will have at least put a small dent in the gap of 360’s 95 more positively-reviewed titles overall, rather than letting it widen by 7 titles. Regardless, their will still be plenty of individual games on each system to enjoy.

  42. me_:

    @CarlB

    Well if we’re going to talk about absolute number (which we really should) the Wii did fairly well too;

    http://www.kotaku.com.au/2009/12/wii-has-better-exclusives-than-ps3-xbox-360/

  43. Roca.:

“the PS3 console showed the best overall game quality for the year. Among other factors, five of the 10 highest-scoring games in 2009 (for any platform) were PS3 titles, including the year’s top game: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves”

  44. Roca.:

360 has the most amount of crap behind the Wii.

Sony’s PSP and PS3 had the lowest percentage of crap.

    Percentage of “GOOD” reviews
    PS3 = 43%
    360 = 35%

    Highest Rated Game in 2009 = PS3s Uncharted 2
“Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is not only the top Playstation 3 game of the year; it ranks first out of all games for any platform in our database for 2009″

  45. CarlB:

“if we’re going to talk about absolute number (which we really should) the Wii did fairly well too”

I agree m, I just read an article that roca quoted recently and it basically stated the Wii beat out both PS3’s and 360’s exclusives:

    xbox360.ign.com/articles/105/1054212p4.html

  46. CarlB:

Uncharted 2 was a great game Roca. I also remember you saying something about Singstar Queen as a PS3 exclusive worth mentioning… how did you like it?

  47. Roca.:

I have Singstar (the first one on the PS3) and my Girlfiend and her friends love it.

I enjoy watching ppl doing dumb shit online. Singstar Queen? not my style. but I will get before I get something like Valve Assassins or Inferno: Hell’s Highway

  48. CarlB:

“but I will get before I get something like Valve Assassins or Inferno: Hell’s Highway”

You have a 360 now? That’s great roca… but I would recommend looking more at the 300 well-reviewed titles at 75 and above on 360 before resorting to those rated between 35-56. Unless you are just fixated on “crap” for some mystifying reason or other.

  49. Ivan_PSP:

Xbox 360 sucks is a dated piece of junk %100 crap.

  50. Roca.:

all the other ones I can get on PC. free online, cheaper and better quality (and the ability to play them on my PS3 – using a software PC to PS3) :D

  51. Barnabe Jones:

Wow this list is just chalk full of fail.

  52. CarlB:

Yes, I see how you did that with assassin’s creed 2, Modern Warfare 2, etc… oh no, I guess you did go ahead an actually purchase those :D

  53. Barnabe Jones:

    Carl b,

Can you help me with some questions about DA:O’s levering system. I’m like 25 hours in and I’m not sure I completely get it. I can’t find any solid info online either.

-All of the XP gained during battles get’s evenly distributed amongst the party(even if they are not in battle)?

If so, wouldn’t it make sense to maybe fire people from my party, so they don’t suck up XP?

Also it doesn’t matter if one member falls during battle since they get XP regardless right? I don’t have to go out of my way to keep every member standing by battles end?

I found the link below describing the scaling feature which was helpful.

    h**p://dragonage.gulbsoft.org/doku.php/challenge_scaling

  54. phranctoast:

    @carlb
What are the 7 more games you mentioned.

  55. Roca.:

“Yes, I see how you did that with assassin’s creed 2, Modern Warfare 2, etc… oh no, I guess you did go ahead an actually purchase those”

CarlB I never said I was going to get the pirate version. I said “FREE ONLINE” which is different. I did purchase those games, I actually buy all my games. I dont rent them and I dont support piracy.

    Thanks.

but yeah if Im interested in Metro, Mass Effect 2, Alan Wake 2, Left 4 Dead 2 and Splinter Cell. I will definitely get them on PC because they cost less, free online play and better quality

  56. CarlB:

“-All of the XP gained during battles get’s evenly distributed amongst the party(even if they are not in battle)?”

Yes. Even those characters that join your party later will be at a similar level when you pick them up.

“wouldn’t it make sense to maybe fire people from my party, so they don’t suck up XP?”

No. Everybody get the same amount of XP regardless of how many people are in your party, and you may need those party members ability spread later on in the game depending upon your party’s makeup and difficulty level you have the game set on.

You can also max out the level (25 is the cap) after the origin story in ostagar if you so desire.

“Also it doesn’t matter if one member falls during battle since they get XP regardless right? I don’t have to go out of my way to keep every member standing by battles end?”

Right, you can let them die and they will still gain xp.

  57. CarlB:

“What are the 7 more games you mentioned.”

Well, there is a list to choose from, so I will go another route:

360 released 243 titles this year
PS3 released 185 titles this year

Counting only those that scored 75 or above for this year (as of today on Metacritic):

360 had 88 titles (some of these simply scored higher than the PS3 version, such as Wolverine, which made the 75 or above cut)

PS3 had 78 titles (some of these were released previously in years past on 360 already, such as Braid)

So it is actually ten more well reviewed titles as of today by this count.

But, taking out the multiplatform titles (that have currently released), including those that released last year or earlier on 360 leaves:

360 had 36 titles rated 75 or above
PS3 had 23 titles rated 75 or above

Counting it that way leaves 13 more titles rated 75 or above.

Ah but Carl you forget we have Haze lmao :P

  61. CarlB:

lol… thankfully that was last years, and KZ2 seems to have made up for it this year, though I doubt I will get around to it anytime soon, let alone Afrika… lol.

  62. Roca.:
