Greenberg thinks Halo: Reach to be biggest game of 2010 – Gran Turismo 5?!?
Aaron Greenberg is Microsoft’s product management director and fanboy number one. Want proof of that job title? Then read on.
Halo is a huge franchise, and one that quite literally took the Xbox brand from an also-ran to a world beater. Any Halo game is guaranteed to sell, and Halo: Reach is no exception.
The new game in the series is a prequel to the original Halo and is set to be unveiled at the Spike Video Game Awards tomorrow (Dec. 12), along with a dozen other new titles. And Greenberg already thinks it’ll be the biggest game of 2010.
Gamasutra asked Greenberg about whether Gran Turismo 5 may upset these plans, and his reply:
Is it launching next year? I’ve seen years and years of mini-games, but I haven’t seen that the game is done. They just released the PSP version – maybe that’s what they’ve been working on. I feel confident that there’s nothing that will compare in size. Halo: Reach will be the biggest game of 2010.
Halo: Reach will be huge. Guaranteed. But bigger than Gran Turismo 5 – a game people have been waiting years for and which is expected to be the first true system seller for the PS3? I’m not convinced, but then Greenberg is paid to only see the future through Xbox-tinted spectacles. I just wish he wasn’t such a douche about it.

Well Final Fantasy maybe but Halo Reach will be hugh. Grand Tursimo does not stand a chance since almost every exclusive PS3 title so far does not sell well. What makes you think Grand Tursimo 5 will be any different. You gotta love Arron Greenberg though, I love the line.

Yeah I was talking about the “Hero” games.
They were pretty clever to use World at War, Classic, and Modern Warfare. Still it’s the same game being sold again and again under a different name.

I’ve seen the game in action and it is very pretty. I explained in another topic on how they do this, and to paraphrase, they have less objects to render so they can out most of the power/developer time and effort into those models.
Same as car games, which is why the GT series looks damn good and the ps2 was able to push 1080i back then.

I already play the GoW3 demo and it looks better than U2 in some aspect. so there!
I also Played GT5p and it looks photorealistic. GT5 is going to look even better. Heavy Rain looks awesome.

I think your right and it will be a combo of both software and hardware.
Naughty Dog found a very good way of utilizing both CPU and SPU which ended up presenting IMO the prettiest game this gen.
Them along with Gorrila Games and Insomniac have been giving out toolset to 3rd party developers for the PS3. Hopefully in the end it means better looking games all around as, the move from the SPU’s to the triple core is significantly easier than vice versa (according to devs)

The second portion where most reviewers will say this or that. We’ll also see how it does with graphical tech at the trade shows prior to its release. If it wins countless awards like U2 did during E3, i’ll concede at that point.

Awards are a lot better of an idea than E3 “awards”. good idea. Does metacritic (at work and can’t see) have any awards system other than what Roca posted about the top rated games. Do they look at a culmination of GOTY type stuff and include graphics. That would be a very good indicator.
Some time in the past I believe it was CAD posted up which game (Fallout3 followed by MGS4) had the most GOTY awards. If they include graphics somehow that would work for me.

As much as I think Aaron is a douche, sells used cars and kicks puppies for fun, He does have a point about GT5. While it is earmarked for release next year, has there been a firm date?
I know it never had a firm release date, and websites, magazines etc kept spouting when it will come out, so he’s quite right there/
As for Halo, well it could be the worst game of the year and 360 will still buy it. I read that the next Halo game is called Halo: Jerkoff, a game where you stand there jerking each other off and fans will still buy it cause it has Halo in the title.

while Halo 3 was launched (3.8 mill units sold within the first week) on xbox 360, which at that time was somewhere arnd 12-13 million..
Its still the only Exclusive this gen to have actually sold more than 10 mil..

It wouldn’t surprise me if the roles in the statement above were reversed.
GT5 is going to sell me the sony brand though, I’m pretty sure of it.
However, just because everybody is purring about how good gt5 is supposedly going to be, it may not meet our hopes/expectations.
It seems the longer we wait for games, the more we hype them. Look at Alan Wake, it’s looks like it’s going to be a fucking good game. We only have screenshots and comments making us think this though.
All of these games we are looking foreward to, might not be as good as we make them out to be.

GT5, Reach, FF13, and GOW3 will be the biggest games. You don’t know which will be the biggest or the best, because they all appeal to different audiences. I’ll bet money that it probably won’t be Reach, lots of people had enough Halo after the ODST and company. I think Reach will end up being great.
As for the Metacritic list: I WOULD make a douchey comment containing something along the lines of “Xbox 3rd60″ to counter all of the douchey PS3rd comments, but then I effectively land myself in the “douchey” category (65.333% of the internet)
I love all 3 systems. PS3 doesn’t get the acclaim it deserves across most age groups, especially peer-orientated teenagers.

FF13 has a good shot, being multiplatform, but the JRPG community is smaller than the racing and FPS categories. We will see in time…

I just want to point out some things,
- Halo odst was a good game, but it didnt have any new multiplayer experience (considering online multiplayer has been the heart and soul of Halo since halo), it came with Halo 3 multiplayer disc..
- Halo Reach is based on the bestselling halo novel, “The Fall Of Reach”, kinda like the origin of John-117 (Master Chief) as well as other spartans..
- Rumored to have 5 player co-op..
- Developed on new engine, gameplay & multiplayer has been changed as well (rumoured)
- Probably the Last Halo Title by bungie..
- Probably the last Halo Title on 360..
- Halo 3 sold 10+ mil units in less than 2 years..

By the “Ocarina of Time” section I mean that it makes the same effect to the gaming industry that games like OoT did. Add to that list the original Mario Bros, Mario 64, Doom, COD, Halo 1, etc etc. As great as we think that every new game is, few will carry down like those. On a serious note, I don’t take sales all to seriously. Great sales don’t always mean great game, especially in long-running franchises. All of the games will have ridiculously high sales. However, this is a small chance that Reach and GT5 will be underwhelming, but I doubt it.

When taking a close look at the vistas that initially “wowed” me when looking at the E3 video in the actual game itself, I noticed these were layered prerendered portraits, whereas realtime environments did not have a great draw distance. Overall, the visuals and artistry (more art driven than technical power) that went into the game are some of the best I have seen though.

PS3 did have a higher percentage of “good” titles, however, this is only because they released less titles overall for the year.
In reality, 360 actually had 10 more titles (88 overall) this year that were “good” (rated 75 or above) on Metacritic when compared to PS3 (78 overall). 360 also had 13 more well reviewed titles if you take away PS3 titles that had already released on 360 in previous years and only count relative exclusives between these two consoles.

Funny, I thought Resistance (Halo Killer) was supposed to be the system seller for PS3 in 2006, Uncharted was supposed to be the system seller for 2007, LBP/MGS4 for 2008, and KZ2/UC2 for 2009… this whole “system seller” concept doesn’t seem to be working when it comes to actual sales.

I dont think Sony did anything wrong, this game is pretty awesome (as far as my friends told me), has been the highest rated Exclusive this year, hell, Sony even marketed it well.. Still i m wondering why dont ps3 owners actually support their high rated “Exclusive” software..

I just wasn’t interested enough in U2 to purchase it.
I enjoyed the multiplayer beta but I couldn’t see it going the distance on console (for me personally).

the fact is; halo hasn’t produced a game that sucked yet, judging from the review scores. (The idiot ps3 fanboys will say different, but can’t be taken with any credibiltiy since they can’t play halo on the ps3)
GT5 will be following a GT5p which got pretty sucky review scores.
i think people are getting tired of the GT series as it’s just more of the same with a new coat of paint.

There is a much larger existing fanbase and a greater online play capability than what UC has. Also the top six best selling games on PS3 are shooters (how ironic), two of which are former COD titles, with the exception of GTA IV and MGS4, which both already had a massive fanbase and strong shooting elements, while GTA IV’s online element is a lot stronger as well.

roca, the question was about sales, not reviews. The top 6 bestselling games are shooters (2 of these are COD games) with the exception of MGS4 and GTAIV, which both have stronger shooting elements, while gta has a stronger multiplayer element.
What that boils down to is stronger shooter + stronger online + massively greater fanbase = more sales on PS3.

I never buy games that I’m unsure of, and I never rent. Unless I play it somewhere else, I have to trust the internet… but you bet I’m careful about that. I look at the average score, read the reviews instead of just glancing at the numbers, watch gameplay footage, and take a look at reader reviews also (although reader reviews on IGN are completely ridiculous most the time).
Some very well-received games just don’t do it for me. Take Mario Galaxy for an example. I own it, but I think that M64 is MUCH better. Galaxy is more polished and has pretty nice graphics, but it lost what I liked about 64. The spaceship doesn’t do it for me after the castle, and the levels are too similar. It completely lost the exploration. You go into a world and select a star, and the level is all laid out for you. Lost the point. Also, Mario sounds like a homo.
Yet it is extremely well-received and overall a great game, but I don’t like it. Just one example of a game that disappointed me. I’m careful with what I buy.

I just put that out there because I was talking about games and most of you were talking about Sales. so I wrote that to kill that argument.
as I said before, some of my favorite games did not sell well like Okami, Vagrant Story, Ico, Shadow of the Colossus etc.
I will happily buy a good game than a crappy game that sells more.

Actually I was just answering questions by Chappas in the “Sony close to breaking even” thread:

I dunno… Maybe I played the MP beta and got burned out on it. At the time I wasn’t very happy using the analogue sticks for aiming in 1st/3rd persons games either.
I may give it a chance one day now I’ve spent lots of time playing bad company 2 so that I’m used to the sticks…
