November 2009 NPD sales figures – Nintendo and Modern Warfare 2 win big

December 11, 2009

November 2009 NPD sales figures - Nintendo and Modern Warfare 2 win bigNPD has released the U.S. sales figures for November 2009. The big winners for the month are Nintendo, which saw the Wii and DS take the top two spots with combined unit sales of almost three million, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, with over six million units sold on the PS3 and Xbox 360.

NPD US Hardware Sales Chart – November 2009

Nintendo DS – 1.7 million
Nintendo Wii – 1.26 million
Microsoft Xbox 360 – 819,500
Sony PlayStation 3 – 710,400
Sony PSP – 293,900
Sony PlayStation 2 – 203,100

Nintendo beat all-comers with a fantastic performance for the month. The Xbox 360 managed to beat off the PS3 by over 100,000 units, tripling its total for October. The most impressive performance of all is probably the PS2 managing to shift over 200,000 units. Not bad for a console that’s been on the market for 109 months now.

NPD US Software Sales Chart – November 2009

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 – Xbox 360 – 4.20 million
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 – PS3 – 1.87 million
New Super Mario Bros. Wii – Wii – 1.39 million
Assassin’s Creed II – Xbox 360 – 794,700
Left 4 Dead 2 – Xbox 360 – 744,000
Wii Sports Resort – Wii – 720,200
Wii Fit Plus – Wii – 679,000
Assassin’s Creed II – PS3 – 448,400
Dragon Age: Origins – Xbox 360 – 362,100
Mario Kart with Wii Wheel – Wii – 315,000

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was always going to top the sales chart for November, but the scale of its victory is astonishingly large. The game sold a lot better on the Xbox 360 than the PS3 in the U.S., but then the ownership levels are that much more for the Microsoft console. Assassin’s Creed II did surprisingly well while Dragon Age: Origins performed admirably for a relatively niche genre.

men…where are these games going to stop selling.
I know the 360 ppl likes to talk about sales. but hey the Wii at the top of their game in sales

  2. phranctoast:

Is still can’t get over all the ps2 sales. They must ALL be from broken consoles ;)

  3. Roca.:

they are probably all replacements. the 200K unit sold make sense now ;)

  4. CAD:

Roca in case you have not noticed Nintendo and Microsoft alway dominate the Software charts. PS3 might manage to sqeek 1 title in there every so often. At least they got 2 in for November but in contrast to 360 sales of the same game…….

  5. phranctoast:

It is pretty impressive considering both those wii games didn’t even come out in November.

I guess a lot of people are buying their second game for the wii ;)

  6. Roca.:

we have gone through this before

more units out = more sells

  7. Happyhockum:

Sony have got to be gutted.

Not only has the Xbox beaten off the PS3 slim (with its price cut) after a mere 2 months PS3 lead but the Xbox software sales are just so extremely strong compared to PS3s.

The comparison with last years numbers are worth pointing out too (seeing a phranctoast brought it up in another thread).

    The Nov 2008 numbers -

    - Xbox 820,000
    - PS3 710,000

    verses the 2009 numbers

    - Xbox 819,500
    - PS3 710,400

Despite the new slim model and a significant price cut PS3 gained a minute number of additional sales over last years numbers and in the face of those moves Xboxes numbers barely changed.

All ways round Sony cannot look on ths result with anything but (I expect) disappointment – and probably a little shock too.

The PS3 slim & price-cut bounce lasted 2 months – they did better than that in ’08.

Now we await the Xbox counter-move.
Last time it was a big price-cut this time I expect the 120gb Elite to formally move to the price-point that the old 60gb Pro model held.

I have to admit I did wonder when they said it at the time but it is quite clear that the Microsoft guys were telling the truth when they responded to the PS3 slim & its price-cut saying they ‘had it covered’.
    They really did.

  8. phranctoast:

    @happy.

    your numbers are way off.

  9. twilight:

    Roca,
Why are you even talking about the Wii? It’s always been PS3 V Xbox360. There should be no discussion about the Wii.

  10. phranctoast:

    The Nov 2008 numbers -

    - Xbox 836,000
    - PS3 378,000

    verses the 2009 numbers

    - Xbox 819,500
    - PS3 710,400

So it kind of negates a great portion of your argument.

PS3 sales almost doubles while 360 sales dropped.

  11. phranctoast:

I also think its a little premature to think that the slim model with price cut is losing it’s momentum.

The best way to tell is to see how it performs both against it’s own numbers from the previous year lets say January or February to avoid holidays) and against the 360 in the same months.

  12. Happyhockum:

    phranctoast

    Ooops, my apologies.
I misread and then misquoted last years numbers.

Yeah, fair enough a doubling is a good result for them.

But, it’s also fair comment that losing out to Xbox despite the new model & their price-drop has got to be very disappointing for them.

  13. Ivan_PSP:

    xbox 360 still SUCKS

  14. phranctoast:

Thats got to suck. I full anticipated a turning of tide.
After the 360 price drop last year we started seeing a big jump in consoles sales on a very consistent basis (non holiday). I have to imagine this is what Sony is expecting to happen for them as well.

Greenbergs right in at least one respect. New console owners go to the system their friends have and right now in NA more have the 360.

  15. Roca.:

    “@happy.

    your numbers are way off.”

    as usual

  16. Happyhockum:

    Roca

    F*ck you.

At least if I make a mistake I always am happy to openly admit it without quibbling or evading the point.

    Entirely unlike you.

  17. Roca.:

“At least if I make a mistake I always am happy to openly admit it without quibbling or evading the point”

after phranc expose your number were pure BS. and yes you do make mistakes. too many if you ask me.

I wouldn’t get too smug (although how you’ll break that habit of a life-time is a toughy) about Blu-ray.

I guess you missed the news that some of the big TV series that were being released on DVD & Blu-ray are now rolling back to a DVD release only?

But I guess you’ll try to tell us that’s great news for Blu-ray?

“Several TV shows that had upgraded to Blu-ray Disc have shifted back to standard-definition DVD-only releases, indicating hurdles in the adoption of the category.

Series whose latest seasons are being released only on standard DVD, though previous seasons got Blu-ray treatment, include Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s Rescue Me and Damages and Warner Home Video’s Nip/Tuck.

Studios and retailers note that consumers have been relatively slow to embrace the overall TV on Blu-ray genre. To date, the average TV title streeting in standard and high-def sells just 5% of its copies on Blu-ray, sources said.”

    h**p://www.videobusiness.com/article/CA6709928.html

  19. Roca.:

ok whats your point. BD is not going anywhere because there is no other physical hi-def format. HD-DVD is gone dude. BD is here to stay until someone comes up with another format to rival BD

  20. phranctoast:

With movies its getting up there in some respect.

The new terminator movie sold 42% on blu ray. 50% is just around the corner.

Thats a shame about Nip Tuck as I really like that show. I probably wouldn’t have bought it. I wonder what the culprit truly is….

On demand… DVR’s. I’d lean more towards on demand. Does netflix have it streaming?

  21. Happyhockum:

    Nevermind your shifting around.

The fact is that (as i just showed) the Blu-ray side of some big TV releases is being dropped.

That is not a sign of a format on the up and up.

Like the Samsung guy said (in late 2008),
Blu-ray has a very limited life-span as a prime video format.

Nobody is saying it will be off the shelves entirely at the end of 2013.
But Blu-ray’s failure to displace DVD will be obvious to all long before then and
also it’s being over-taken by a more recent and developing tech will also be very obvious.

Now, go spin away & bore everyone to death, fanboy.

  22. Happyhockum:

    phranctoast

    No.
    That is incorrect.

Nielson showed that Terminator sales to start with were 42% (in the USA).
That is to be expected with an early adopted format, but you are not comparing like with like.
DVD is a mature market and has not been an early adopter market for years.

DVD sales pick up over time as prices fall.
Blu-ray picks up it’s best sales initially.

That’s why the BDA never give us a comparative sales picture at, say, 6, 9 or 12mths.

That’s how come last year Nielson was able to show 20%+ during some weeks with some releases and yet the total years Blu-ray movie sales (in the USA) were in fact just 4.45% of DVDs.

I am not saying Blu-ray has not grown this year (that would be absurd) however it’s growth is slow and it is plaiinly out of time if it is supposed to slot in to become ‘the next DVD’.

June 2010 marks 4 full years for Blu-ray and even if they have doubled their performance over last year (unlikely in this current economic climate) that still places them at under 10% of the retail video disc market.

  23. Roca.:

ahhhhhhhh……bluray talk about. but yet Kev, Cad and HH all got one (sans PS3)

  24. vek:

What the Xbox fanboys are forgetting/ignoring is the fact that MS banned close to 1 million xbox 360 consoles, but not their Live accounts. Oh, and it was perfect timing with the launch of Modern Warefare too. Surely, this has got to push some sales beyond usual? They banned moders (the hardest of the hard-core), obviosly they won’t wont to miss out on Modern Warefare 2. Pretty smart move on Microsofts part I must say.

Does anybody wonder why MS didnt release their sales for the week of black friday? I mean, the company that never misses a chance to boast about their sales surely wouldn’t miss out on this chance, considering it beat Sony right? I would certainly think so.

The reason is, I think, after banning all those consoles, many people (by the 100,000′s) went out and bought another 360 for Modern Warefare 2. They probably had a shit load of sales before the week of black friday. And their black friday sales probably werent very impressive. Microsoft is just doing everything they can to hide the fact that they gained a lot of sales from previous 360 users who have had their consoles banned.

What will they do next month? Ban another million?

  25. Happyhockum:

    Roca

  29. ncaissie:

BR isn’t going anywhere. People are not jumping on the HD bandwagon but as they replace their TVs they will go HD. The only reason no one is doing it now is because it cost way too much for the channels. I pay big bucks for my HD and it SUCKS. I get 20 or so channels and most are sports so it blows chunks. When all broadcasting goes HD then people will bother. I despise watching SD but I have no choice when it isn’t in HD.

  30. Happyhockum:

    ncassie

    You’re missing the point.

Most TV doesn’t merit HD and even when it is done in HD it adds nothing to the experience – why do you think they currently show-case sports and documentaries?

To borrow a well-known phrase, you favourite soap in HD is not going to be a system seller.

  31. Happyhockum:

Plus TV HD is quite a different matter to a disc-based video format.

Video on demand with an HD DVR is going to be big (it is taking off in a big way in the UK……based largely on sports and movies).

The thing is HD everything costs and like I said your daily soap just doesn’t need it, they’ll probably stay upscalled SD for a very long time yet.

  32. Happyhockum:

Oh and don’t forget streaming – not only is Netflix et al carving out a big chunk of the market but that new Amazon service points the way ahead.

The problem Blu-ray has is that there is no ‘DVD market’ left to take anymore, it is fragmenting so quickly.

  33. ncaissie:

“To borrow a well-known phrase, you favourite soap in HD is not going to be a system seller.”

Want to bet? The number one reason I went HD is Smallville and I’m told it is just like a soap.
    That there proves you wrong.
Besides you missed my point. I said there is not enough content to make people jump to HD yet.
    Please reread my post.

HD does add to the experience and any idiot with 20/50 vision could see that.
If you don’t then I suggest you try lasik.

  34. phranctoast:

I still feel that with the blu ray medium is a better platform for people that want to own their media while the streaming solution will be closer to a rental medium.
Will it cut into sales. I’m sure. What we may start noticing is studios hold back their content from a streaming medium as to not cut into the

  35. ncaissie:

“The problem Blu-ray has is that there is no ‘DVD market’ left to take anymore, it is fragmenting so quickly.”

LOL what a fuckin tool. The video stores are still 80% DVD you fuckin retard! Do you think they would keep buying them if no one was renting them still?
You just like to argue for the sake of arguing.
I’m going back to skipping over your useless posts.

  36. Happyhockum:

    ncassie

You own personal opinion proves nothing.

The big soaps like Neighbours, Coronation Street, Home & Away or Eastenders will not look amazing in HD, HD is completely irrelevant to them.

In fact one of the reasons why they aren’t in it is because it costs a lot of money to upgrade the sets etc and the TV Co.’s simply do not think it’s worth it.
You can expect them unscaled but that’s about it for a very long time to come.

  37. Roca.:

    dont bother ncaissie.

are you done with GoW1 yet?

  38. phranctoast:

  39. ncaissie:

Not only rentals but try walking into a Wal-Mart and look at the DVD to BR ratio. There is plenty of market to capture. You lost all credibility with that stupid statement.

  40. Happyhockum:

    ncassie

    You’re the moron.

If this is too difficult for you to grasp just step out of it, k?

Streamning services have exploded in the past year, even Sony set-up their latest Bravia HD TVs for streaming and PS3 can do similar.

Video on demand is a factor with almost every satellite & cable Co.s PVR/DVR out there.

    Plainly the market is fragmenting.

You might like to take a look at that DVD rental sector.
My town used to have 6 DVD rental shops, now it’s a small section in one small newsagent type shop and one of the local filling stations does it.

DVD rental stores are a dying breed.

    You ridiculous tool.

Happy I actually Picked up two Bluray Movies yesterday just to test out my Laptop and it looked pretty good. To be honest I need to do a comparison between Bluray and 1080P Streaming on the 360 but I can safely say that if there is a difference it is quite laughable for those who make it sound like it is a world of difference. I gotta check out more movies but I’m starting to think that HD DVD looked slightly better. I think I will get the same movie to see the Difference. I think I will get Swordfish for my comparison just to see Hally Berrys Tits. I have that sceen Bookmarked on my HD DVD Version.

  43. twilight:

    Happyhockum,
You brought up some interesting points regarding blu ray. The economy may be hurting the adoption of blu ray. As far as t.v. shows go,most people don’t buy t.v. shows on blu ray because most of the t.v, shows on blu ray are only in 1080i. There are a lot of people who don’t buy t.v. shows because of this and the pricing of some of the shows. They would rather buy other types of blu rays.
Also, PS3 people are not wiggling out of anything. We are very aware of the NPD sales figures. Xbox360 outsold PS3 during this month. So there you go.PS3 people are very reasonable. At least, most of us are.

  44. ncaissie:

no time lately Roca. I am taking off for Florida for X-mas next week and lent my game out so I will pack instead of playing lol.
    I hate Ottawa winters.

  45. phranctoast:

    @CAD
Like anything in life the work put into something shows the end result.

If both movies are encoded with the same compression technique using both HDDVD’s and Blurays strong points Blu ray should look slightly better due to higher bit rate. Will you be able to notice it. I doubt it. You should be able to see the difference between HD streaming though.

  46. Roca.:

I enjoy the cold..you always feel fresh for some reason lol

  47. ncaissie:

Naturally you circle-jerking cretins can be relied upon to only know or choose to focus on a fragment of the story.

    You missed this, obviously –

    “Wal-Mart Scales Back DVD Displays : 5th Oct 2009

A recent shift in merchandising strategy by the world’s largest retailer spells more trouble for DVD sales and the entertainment industry that depends on them for profits.

As part of a larger effort to clean up its aisles and appeal to higher-end shoppers, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is doing away with display cases to promote the latest hot movie titles.

The move comes as major film studios are reeling from declines in revenue from DVD sales as cash-strapped consumers turn to low-cost rental services and digital downloads for home movies.

“We think the new strategy implies Wal-Mart no longer sees DVDs and Blu-ray discs as traffic drivers,” J.P. Morgan analyst Imran Khan said”

  50. twilight:

Also, there are places that have bandwidth limits so this may not always be feasible.

  51. Happyhockum:

    Roca

I’m not saying that the DVD market will shrink to nothing over-night.

However it is plainly not only in a marked decline but it is under attack and being fragmented by several new entrants to that market.

Blu-ray cannot simply ‘become the next DVD’ because that market is being erroded significantly right now, nevermind in the coming few years as Blu-ray seeks to grow beytond it’s current small segment.

Which is precisely what and all that I have been saying all along.

Sadly in your haste to agree with and back-up your idiot friend ncassie’s attacks you must have missed that.

    twilight

That’s true but in the cities and big towns (which is where most of us are) that is becoming less and less of a factor.
Advances like Silverlight reduce that handicap further.
In the last 6 years my own connection has gone from
    5kbps in 2003 to
    550kbps in 2004 to

    6.3mbps in 2007 to
    18.2mbps in 2009.

  52. phranctoast:

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.

Oh my god, Ninty must be laughing their nobs off at the sales they get every month. And look at “console of the year” ps4th (haw haw) back where it belongs. Beaten even by the 360 still. But what must be most gutting is that the 360 version of Call Of Duty sold bucketloads more than the ps4th version. Ha ha ha ha.

Looks like this site is where all the ps4th fanboys turn up. I mean all of them. Ha ha ha. (oops I think I just laughed my nob off)

  59. Happyhockum:

    Andrew DS

Very true, between the DS/DSi and the Wii Nintendo just roll over the lot of them with simply ‘mighty sales’.

I guess it’ll be a while before Dave comes out with one of his ‘Is Nintendo’s Wii dying?’ stories.

With the cash mountain Wii has generated for them (especially as they resisted cutting prices for so long) it’ll be very interesting to see what they can fund for their next console.

Must be a really nice time to be a Nintendo exec.

  60. Saber_HAHAha:

Shoot. Looks like the PS3 just plopped back onto the bottom.

…*sneaks out of room to escape the oncoming fanboy earthquake*

As for the sales, I’m surprised to see PS3 down again. They did the right thing by releasing new games and cutting the price. This is what Sony needs to do. Advertise the heck out of it, and quit letting Microsoft take them in the ass.

  61. Happyhockum:

    Saber_HAHAha

I think Sony have done all that they could do – and to be fair it did give them a big boost compared to last Nov.

Their problem is that they already are starting from a bad financial position and every sale costs them money so a big boost in sales is actually a bigger loss – and despite all the big claims about their games they just don’t seem to be able to sell them in anything like the same numbers as Xbox does so they fail to recoup on their losses in the way it used to be done.

I don’t know where they go with it from here.
Next we’ll see Microsoft & Nintendo respond and things will get even worse for PS3 in the coming months – it’s all just what happened like last year.

  62. CON:

What the hell happened to Uncharted???? It simply disappeared from top spot!

Game of the year my ass!!!

    @CON

Is your ass the almighty center of pure truth?

If not, I facepalm at this sorrowful event. It already won GOTY from IGN AUS and Metacritic. Of course, MW2 will get a fair share, but I bet that U2 will be second or first on nearly every list.

I still ponder on the Arse of Truth theory. I think I’m going to write a book on it.

  64. ViRuS:

    LOL.

Nintendo really has just pissed this console war.

Sony and MS must feel like they’re trying to catch Usian Bolt.

  65. CarlB:

“Wii at the top of their game in sales”

Really? Then this is even more impressive:

XBox 360 – 6,100,800 in software unit sales in a MONTH
    Wii- 3,104,200
    PS3- 2,318,400

360 is selling more software than Wii and 360 combined. Twice as much as Wii and almost 3 times as much as PS3. And it has the most favorably reviewed titles this year. 2009 = Year of the 360. Wow.

    “and hulu. :D

Too bad it isn’t still available on PS3 :(

“wonder why ppl still go to the movies when they can download the movie (in good quality) before it even hits the big screen?”

Because it is legally available first in the theaters months before it becomes legally available on streaming, downloads, DVD/BD.

“or why most ppl buy their games instead of using a rental service like gamefly?”

Because it is not available worldwide and many are still not aware of the advantages it offers.

  66. gamer_thumb:

I’m really surprised to see the ps3 sales fall short last month. I really thought the $300.00 price would lure in people looking for a great BD player that could do a lot of other things including play great games. I think some people are still under the impression that the ps3 is too expensive without even checking it out. I also think people are still on the fence with BD. It will come eventually but right now most homes have multiple dvd players and its hard justifying switching over. I also think people with large ps2 libraries are very disappointed with the lack of backwards compatability on the ps3. (which helps explain the impressive ps2 sales.)
As far as the wii is concerned I think people with wiis are very excited about the new super mario bros. game. I know people I work with who haven’t used their wii very often have renewed interest because of this game.

  67. Roca.:

more units out = more sells.

  68. CarlB:

“people with large ps2 libraries are very disappointed with the lack of backwards compatability on the ps3″

I know I am, but I still bought one and still enjoy it when I am not playing 360, though I am apparently not with the majority. Then again, we are still in a recession, so people are likely going for the less expensive 360′s as well.

  69. CarlB:

“more units out = more sells.”

Even with your “basic math” 360 managed to sell more software than PS3 and Wii combined. Certainly they have more console units combined than the 360, let alone the wii by itself.

Batman Arkham Asylum ps3 sales pass 360..

  71. kev:

    this is funny..

it seems like just yesterday the idiot ps3 fanboy masses were claiming the ps3 outsolde the 360 in the US on their “440k ps3 sales” claim… which later was found to be a lie as those numbers were not for US-only..

    oh well…better luck next time, ps3 fanboys…lmao…

The crow eaters will have fled by then”

……would you like some salt & pepper with yours phranctoast?

  73. kev:

Happy – i’ve got a dollar that says Phranc runs from your post like Roca runs from women… LMAO.

    mmmmmm…..roasted crow… hee, hee…

  74. Happyhockum:

    LOL

Precious little sign of him…..maybe he “fled” once the real numbers came out?

kev, what’s this about the PS3 Black Friday 440k number being a bit of PR fakery & not confined to US sales?

  75. CON:

    Nope no sign yet lol

  76. harry sachz:

    *crickets*

  77. harry sachz:

    ….but…but….JAPAN!! JAPAN!!

  78. JofaMang:

Hahah, first the xbots try to trivialize sales numbers when its one of their own not showing success(FM3 for example) then try to use sales as a lynchpin to their entire superiority arguement. Now THAT’S sad.

  79. CarlB:

I know Jofa, 1.7M for Forza 3 in 7 weeks is pretty low for a 360 title… lol.

    vgchartz.com/swlaunch.php?reg1=All&game1=Forza+Motorsport+3+-+X360[30434]&reg2=All&game2=&reg3=All&game3=&weeks=7

    next please.

  80. phranctoast:

I was there the day of. Who was running. I’m sorry I have a life and don’t appear on this site on the weekends picking through every post for signs of kev or happy posting, especially since I was here earlier and was content with my conversation with happy..

“kev, what’s this about the PS3 Black Friday 440k number being a bit of PR fakery & not confined to US sales?”

That was kev lying through his teeth. He can not backup the statement with not even a little bit of proof. All estimated had the total ps3 sales prior in the 700K range.

He also can’t back whether or not the 360 was outsold on Black Friday or Black Fridays week, but thats trivial now anyway.

Harry brings up a good point though. PS3 outsold the 360 in Japan last week by 50K units. Makes a month lead of 100K in NA seem minuscule.

  81. JofaMang:

So if GT5 outsells FM3 it is the superior title? That is the logic I am getting here. But when GT5 DOES outsell FM3, sales won’t be relevant to quality.

    Bookmark it, bitches!

Phranc: “Harry brings up a good point though. PS3 outsold the 360 in Japan last week by 50K units. Makes a month lead of 100K in NA seem minuscule.”

Actually the PS2 has outsold the 360 in Japan since the 360 launched in 2005. in 4 years the 360 has manage to sell 1M, they Expect the 360 to sell a total of 2M units in Japan during its life span.

  83. CarlB:

100K or more sales on hardware that doesn’t even break even for the manufacturer means little. PS3 software sales trailing by almost 4 million behind 360 in a single month?

    With Hardware brings software sales.

Hardly a typical month. The game might as well have been a 360 exclusive as it caters to their entire fanbase.

  85. CarlB:

Agreed, November is typically the biggest sales month of the year, and only half of the 360′s 4 million lead was accounted for by MW2 catering to the fanbase. I understand the hardware/software sales argument, I just don’t recall this massive 360 software lead happening in previous years.
