Sony close to breaking even with PS3
When Sony launched the PS3, it reportedly cost $800 to manufacture each unit. That was much more than the console was being sold for, and made price cuts difficult. However, it appears now that the hardware and manufacturing costs have been reduced so much that the company is almost breaking even on each unit sold, even at its recently-reduced price.
The PS3 is an expensive piece of kit, with hardware and manufacturing costs far outweighing the retail price in its early days. By late 2008 Sony had reportedly reduced these costs by a substantial amount. And now, they’ve been reduced even further, with iSuppli estimating that each Playstation 3 now costs Sony around $336 to bring to retail, where it sells for $299.
The design of the PS3 Slim has helped, but the priciest component is still the Blu-ray drive at $66 per unit.
So, the PS3 hardware is still a loss-making product for Sony, but the figures are converging quickly. I’m guessing another year and costs will be reduced even more, and that means further price cuts become a definite possibility.

“manufacturing costs have been reduced so much that the company is almost breaking even on each unit sold, even at its recently-reduced price”
Yeah but however you choose to put it (if true) that’s still making a loss on every unit sold, albeit a smaller loss than before.
That means that the recent boost in sales has cost them a lot of money.
Add in the undeniable fact that PS3 ownwers, for some reason, seem shy about buying games and Blu-ray movies and you can see why some people have been heard to use the term ‘bag of hurt’.

“Add in the undeniable fact that PS3 ownwers, for some reason, seem shy about buying games and Blu-ray movies and you can see why some people have been heard to use the term ‘bag of hurt’.”
What do you have to back up that statement?
I own 37 games and you can click on my name to see what movies I own (I haven’t updated the list in some time)

Haha, I love the Internet yano! Only online do people feel confident enough to make statements like this, if it were in person you’d get rebuffed so fast it’s unreal.
Can I just ask what reliable source you’re using to base this so called ‘undeniable’ statement on please?
The key word here being reliable btw. Oh sorry, you look @ the Top10 NPD numbers each month and think you know how many games are sold altogether all around the world? What about all the games which don’t quite make it into the Top10? Obviously they simply don’t count as sales?
Could you link me to the BR Movie sales though because I’d actually be pretty interested in those figures myself, cheers :]

I’m not really sure what point your making with this sentence though mate? Seems like you just felt you needed to provide a summary of this article, just in case anyone didn’t understand the main body of text?

I don’t think I’d trust those figures. I don’t think anybody besides Sony know what their internal costs are.
December 12th, 2009
I thought the idea was to make a profit on each console sold.
Maybe I’m just ignorant to how these things work.
Fuck sake, I’d be pig sick selling something like that at a loss.
December 12th, 2009
Most consoles initially sell at a loss with the prospective software sales the offset. Sony has software and movies helping them out.
December 12th, 2009
Sony knows exactly what they are doing. If they didn’t know what they were doing, Sony wouldn’t be in business all these years. Everyone knows all gaming consoles generally loose money initially. It’s just the nature of the business. Also, Sony is involved in much more than just games. Sony gets their money.

The NPD game sales numbers show it every month as do the Nielson video sales numbers that come out weekly.
Sorry but the fact is that your personal anecdotes do not challenge the data.

The PS3 also won this year in Total Sales
December 12th, 2009
For the year they might have sold slightly more hardware (and only hardware), unfortunately they still have about a 6.2 million gap to close between it and the 360. At PS3′s present rate, it may match 360 buy 2020, except this gen isn’t expected to last that long. Considering they are still taking a loss on hardware, slightly greater hardware sales combined with the massive gap in software sales between PS3 and 360 isn’t encouraging news.

Regardless, even if it does remain in last place as it has since launch, it should do fine and we should still be able to see a PS4 (hopefully).
December 13th, 2009
sales of the 360 have a 18months advantage.
but as far as good game goes. PS3 once again put up and even impressive lineup that started in 2008 and looks like it 2010 will follow the trend
December 13th, 2009
“sales of the 360 have a 18months advantage.”
Actually it only has a 12 month advantage, and even if it was 18 months, it hardly explains a 6.2 million lead years down the line when Wii already surpassed 360 sales exponentially.
But as far as good games go, 360 still released more favorably reviewed titles, and both consoles lineups were impressive. It looks like 2010 will follow that trend.
December 13th, 2009
Good to see that Sony will probably break even soon. They could have a profit by the end of this generation. Things weren’t looking so crisp and shiny back in 2007. It’s pretty much like the only reason they didn’t dump the PS3 after such a loss is because of the potential market, but that wasn’t enough. No Sony, you DO have to lower the price and release some good games at SOME point in time. By the release of Uncharted 2 and the price cut, great, task complete.
If they keep this up for the next few years, they will hopefully have a much better image and larger fanbase. Early-to-mid 2010 looks great so far. However, when Natal comes by, and (if) Microsoft pulls a big one off, that could easily tip things back into Microsoft’s favor.
I doubt that Microsoft or Sony will completely dominate the opposing company at any point in this console war. I hope that doesn’t happen. We know what will happen if Sony gains complete control. If the same thing happened in Microsoft’s favor, things too horrible to happen… WILL HAPPEN.
Don’t get me started on Nintendo. There’s no chance of the Wii flushing out the other consoles, since the audiences are different. However, if the Judgement Day comes and Nintendo takes a complete monopoly over gaming with a crappy, casual gamer device, I would sit in a corner and tearfully begin to realize the utter demise of gaming, and the destruction of human joy………….
….wait, what?

What are you talking about OS? I never said that. PS3 has great games, it just doesn’t have as many as the 360 rated 90 or above overall, or as many well reviewed as the 360 overall. They don’t sell as well either, but they are still great games, and worth playing.

“Highest total of well reviewed games = 360″ – CarlB
It’s nice to be able to just make up sentences and hope people will believe them isn’t it?
Again, refer back to my first post regarding the Internet.
I guess you could’ve been talking about all games ever, but overall, as a gamer I tend to like new games rather than old games and so would assume you think the same.
Certain classics can be replayed over and over agreed, but I’m not one to shout and rave about games which are years old, however if you want to choose that defence that’s fine. Personally I like basing my judgements on how things currently are, not how they were once upon a time.
“Sony’s Playstation 3 console has edged out Microsoft’s once-dominant Xbox 360 to finish on top in Metacritic’s first annual Game Platform Power Rankings” – http://features.metacritic.com/features/2009/the-best-games-of-2009/
“sales of the 360 have a 18months advantage†-Roca
“Actually it only has a 12 month advantage” -CarlB
ACTUALLY, it was a 13.5 – 14 month advantage (December 05 – March 07).
I’m basing it on when both consoles were available in the major territories, which means Europe, USA and Japan.
Fortunately, my world isn’t limited to only the United States.

Let’s put it this way, you’re totally guaranteed to bash the game no matter how it looks.
Don’t worry tho, no matter how much you whinge & gurn about it, you’ll soon be seeing what success is like with a really great game.
Shame you have nothing even close to that happening with any of those (expensive) 1st party games on your platform of choice tho, eh?
The big question is, with such cr@ppy sales, how long can Sony afford to keep that up and how many more, besides that small handful of decent 1st party games, will you get?
December 13th, 2009

I’m always dubious about cut-scenes but that looked as good as anything console (and not on very high end PC) as I’ve seen yet.

December 14th, 2009
HH “The big question is, with such cr@ppy sales, how long can Sony afford to keep that up”
you dont know nothing about games or the game industry. Sony is more than Happy with its sales figures. any game past the 500K – 1M mark it’s consider successful. all Sony franchises all past that point already. Even new IPs like Infamous, Uncharted, LBP, Resistance, Warhawk and Motorstorm.
HH: “small handful of decent 1st party games”
again you dont know what your talking about. Besides EA (3rd party) Sony put up the biggest lineup of exclusive and its exclusives had the highest average of review scores and one of them is being critically recognized as one of the best Single Player experience in gaming History and a serious GOTY contender, maybe taking it away from MW2 (the best selling game in gaming history)
December 14th, 2009
HH: “how long can Sony afford to keep that up”
by the looks of Sony’s 2010 lineup, it looks like they will be putting up a bigger and a more impressive lineup and they havent show any sign of slowing down
December 14th, 2009
2010 is probably pretty much set out and has been for a while.
I’d look to see it slacken off (assuming the boost we’ve seen for PS3 & the subsequent sales droop & disappointment continues like last year) in 2011.
December 14th, 2009
“2010 is probably pretty much set out and has been for a while.”
hahha wrong again.. we only know Sony’s lineup for the first half of 2010. whatever they are cooking for the Summer and for the Holidays is still a mystery.
December 14th, 2009
World wide I can honestly see PS3 outselling Xbox 360 (not by very much mind you) in 2010. Sony’s lineup is alot stronger in my opinion from what I have seen so far. A great game is a great game, don’t care what system it is for. However Sony has been and looks to continue to keep my PS3 busy well into 2010. Xbox 360 on the other hand has been eating dust and looks to be doing that for some time to come. Used to be the other way around, Microsoft really needs to step up their game in my opinion.

Roca
No.
I made a genuine and honest mistake.
I then went to every thread where I’d posted those erroneous numbers and put the correct number which phranctoast pointed out to me.
That’s not being a “liar” that’s being an honest human being.
It speaks volumes (about you, but is no surprise) that you race to claim it as being otherwise.
You see, unlike you, I have no emotional investment either way.
I am old enough & honest enough to take it on the chin when I make a mistake
(sooner or later you’re going to have to face up to the fact that we all do sometimes and it is just a mistake, not a lie or an attempt to mislead……but again your insistance that is must be deceptive speaks volumes about where you’re – always – coming from)
and I have no qualms about admitting that.
Unlike you with your endless petty evasion, feeble spin and deliberately misleading word-games.
Your attempt to broaden this out to bait is just exactly the sort of thing I’m talking about.
You sad dreary & laughably predictable little fanboy.
December 15th, 2009
“I made a genuine and honest mistake.”
haha…yeah you posted the same “made up” numbers in multiple threads thinking you were going to get away with it.
im glad Phranc noticed how of a liar you really and posted the “right” (acutal) numbers.
I swear you must be kev on a different id. you are just as stupid as him
December 15th, 2009
lying and mistakes are two different things. It would be nice if you could teach that to kev, happy.
I’ll back happy on this. I corrected it, and unlike where kev would turn it into a 200 post thread Happy realized what he did wrong. No troubles.
A lie is different. With a lie, you know the truth and you intentionally mislead.
December 15th, 2009
he didnt say where he got those numbers from. so he probably made them up.
December 15th, 2009
What cracked me up with the whole situation was that he honestly believed the numbers he showed enough to repeat it in multiple threads and write a big explanation as how doomed the ps3 is that it barely sold as much as the previous year.
He did retract when it was pointed out that the numbers were incorrect and even said that the PS3 did well doubling the numbers from the previous year.
It was tactful and well done. If it was kev we would have been arguing till the cows came home. You put fact straight in front of him and he just sticks his fingers in his ears and yells to himself.
December 15th, 2009
“What cracked me up with the whole situation was that he honestly believed the numbers he showed enough to repeat it in multiple threads and write a big explanation as how doomed the ps3 is that it barely sold as much as the previous year”

December 15th, 2009
@Chappas,
“It’s nice to be able to just make up sentences and hope people will believe them isn’t it?”
My comment was referring to total titles released this gen and what was released this year based on Metacritic currently, I’m not making it up.
“ACTUALLY, it was a 13.5 – 14 month advantage (December 05 – March 07).. I’m basing it on when both consoles were available in the major territories, which means Europe, USA and Japan.”
Sorry if I missed it by a month and a half for where you live, PS3 was released in the major market territories of Japan and NA in Nov (11th and 17th respectively) 2006, whereas the 360 was released Nov 22nd in the US and Canada, then Dec 2-10 elsewhere… so 12 months is what I put in response to roca, who also lives in the states. I think I also remember somebody here telling me the PS3 was “region free”. I understand it took about 3-4 months longer to release in Europe and Australia though, so that would “actually” be a 15-16 month lead in those particular territories, and much longer in places like Malaysia.
“Fortunately, my world isn’t limited to only the United States.”
Fortunately, mine isn’t either, as I have been to about 20 different countries in my career, just got back from Iraq earlier the year from my second tour there, and am going to Japan early next year.
Either way I apologize if I offended you.
