Who was the best game publisher of 2009, Sony or EA?
Recently news regarding which console was the best video game platform for 2009 was announced. On the heels of this news, EA has stepped up to declare itself the best publisher of 2009.
Metacritic crunched review stats for all of the games released this year across all platforms and put up an eye catching article recently. In the article, Metacritic declares the PS3 as the top platform with the best games of 2009.
According to Metacritic, the PS3 housed five of the 10 highest-scoring games in 2009 for any platform. Also, the PS3 had this year’s highest rated game, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves with a score of 96.
Metacritic looked at six different parameters to calculate which platform had the best games of 2009:

(via Metacritic)
According to Kotaku, not too long after Metacritic’s announcement, EA CEO John Riccitiello declared that EA was the number one publisher of 2009. He based his claim on the fact that EA published the most number of quality titles (80+) in 2009, with 19 titles total.
Here is Riccitiello’s chart showing number of 80+ games for each publisher CYTD (Calendar year to date):

(via Kotaku)
However, Kotaku started questioning Riccitiello’s claim by analyzing all of the games released by each of the publishers listed above. As it turns out, it is not a simple matter of saying “xyz company†had the most number of 80+ games, so they are the “best publisher.†Similarly to Metacritic, Kotaku looked at several different parameters such as number of games in 90+ and 80+ category as well as the average scores.
The top two publishers were EA and Sony as expected. Both publishers had four games with 90+ scores, which is significantly more than any of the other publishers. EA won out as far as quantity of 80+ games. However, Sony won out as far as higher average 90+ and 80+ games.
Here is Kotaku’s final verdict in their own words:
The Answer(s)
It’s no surprise that EA’s chart accurately showed that the publisher had the most well-reviewed games, though, thanks to Kotaku, you can now see what those games were. This breakdown shows a couple of other things:
1) While EA had the most games that received 80+ scores, its average score for such titles settled between its two most prolific game-publishing competitors. It beat Nintendo but was beaten by Sony.
2) It’s clear that no matter how many well-reviewed games a publisher has, getting an 80-89 score is far easier than getting a 90+. That seems to be the big equalizer among these top publishers. No one makes lots of those and few make more than a couple.
So which company made the most good video games in 2009? Probably the one you like the most. But if you want to try using numbers to back it up in 2009, I think you have to go with EA for quantity or Sony for 90+ excellence and a higher average score from its 80+ titles.
Head on over to Kotaku to view the list of games and metascore for each publishers listed.

Agreed, Uncharted 2 has blown any other game out the water this year.
December 12th, 2009
This year was a better one for PS3, I won’t argue about that.
Nevertheless, Xbox still has a bigger library of games and more of them with high scores.
It’s also fair comment that Sony also seem to have a fundamental problem getting PS3 owners to buy games and they are very picky about which Blu-rays they buy too.
The ‘trojan horse’ brought them so far but doesn’t look especially healthy in producing sales right now – and if we are to belive the latest info all the recent sales growth has just cost them even more money seeing as how every PS3 is still a net cost to them.
Funny business.
They wil be wanting to see things pick up for them in ’10, that surely can’t just go on forever.

Sony is a better developer for “me”. I mean, they released Killzone 2, inFAMOUS, R&C, and Uncharted 2 this year, and I gotta love all those games (at least I think they published all those, don’t quote me, I didn’t exactly check). I know that EA published a heckload of great multi-plats like they do every year.
I bought my PS3 in April ’09, so nearly all my games are the PS3 exclusives that Sony released over the past couple years. In terms of graphics, Killzone 2 and Uncharted 2 (both 2009 Sony games) were miles ahead of other competitors IMO. Not to mention they are both balanced games (particularly Uncharted 2; KZ2 has a weak story).
Sony for me, EA for many other people.
In terms of games, it’s not about how many. If I want a new gaming console, games are expensive in this day and age, and it won’t affect me if this console has *blank* many AAA games that I never even heard of than *blank* console. I just pick the top 10 or 15 or so exclusives on each platform and compare. I prefer new games over old games, so I look at the upcoming line-up also. I’ll tell you guys the games that did it for me: Uncharted 2, Killzone 2, LBP, R&C, and MGS4 (which I didn’t finish yet). I own all those games and adore them (although I sold KZ2 recently, after playing over 40 hours of campaign). If Gears, Halo, Mass Effect, L4D, and Forza stuck out more to me, I would’ve picked the 360, but they didn’t. Also, online gaming isn’t a big part for me. Sure, I could go for a little COD or Uncharted 2 online now and then, but the single-player experience is what I judge a game on. Online multiplayer is a time-extender. Therefore, I don’t think that XBL is worth $50/y more than PSN.

no one has match the PS3 exclusive line up since 2008
expect 2010 to be even bigger
December 12th, 2009
Got to love how they broke it down when the total numbers didn’t go in Sony’s favor… lol.
“Okay… Metacritic has ‘generally favorable’ reviews from 75-89… nope that doesn’t work… let’s split it up… okay, yeah that works, we’ll make our own categories heh heheh… oh… wait a sec, some of these games have already been released in years past on 360… don’t worry, nobody will notice, hehehe.”
80 and above instead of 75 and above is it?
Very well.
360 currently has 182 titles rated 80 and above.
PS3 currently has 143 titles rated 80 and above.
90 and above?
360 currently has 25 titles rated 90 and above.
PS3 currently has 19 titles rated 90 and above.
This year’s releases only:
360 currently has 55 titles rated 80 and above.
PS3 currently has 57 titles rated 80 and above.
360 currently has 7 titles rated 90 and above.
PS3 currently has 10 titles rated 90 and above.
Basically what this boils down to is PS3 managed to put a small dent in the gap that is the 360 quality titles lead. If it managed to maintain this pace in future years it would match the 360 in quality titles by the end of 2011, but it wouldn’t exceed it in the 90 and above category until the end of 2012, by which time we should already be in the next gen:
2009
360 182 >80
PS3 143 >80
360 25 >90
PS3 19 >90
2010
360 237 >80
PS3 200 >80
360 32 >90
PS3 29 >90
2011
360 292 >80
PS3 257 >80
360 39 >90
PS3 39 >90
As it is, the 75-90 (“generally favorable reviews”) category is still widening in favor of the 360, and at this rate, the PS3 will not be able to catch 360 this gen in the 80 and above window, let alone the 90 and above window before the next gen comes.

for the last two years Sony has had better games than the 360.
Magazines say so, websites say so.
Of course overall, the 360 still has MORE highly rated games simply because it has more games as it’s been out a whole year longer.
minus sales, the 2008 and 2009 are the years of the PS3. I don’t see that changing anytime soon.
Without as many 1st party studios MS will have to rely on third which tend to release games on both.

“Got to love how they broke it down when the total numbers didn’t go in Sony’s favor… lol.”
It’s not like Sony was complaining.. EA was. Truth be told..its harder to have a 90+ game on metacritic, than a bunch of 80+ games. Sony won in that respect.
You really can’t give them anything can you?

“You really can’t give them anything can you?”
I just said they had 3 more rated 90 or above this year and that they are steadily closing the gap in this category… what do you want, me to get down on my knees and praise Sony exclusively? Sorry, not going to happen.
Roca, I’ll give you that. As a publisher Sony did beat Microsoft as far as the most games rated 80 or above.
Unfortunately the PS3 still had less exclusives (respectively between these two consoles alone that have been released at this time) that rated 80 or above:
360:
92 Forza Motorsport 3
90 Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost and Damned
89 Peggle Nights
89 Grand Theft Auto IV: The Ballad of Gay Tony
89 Peggle
89 Left 4 Dead 2
88 Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition, The
88 Shadow Complex
86 Trials HD
84 Splosion Man
84 Worms 2: Armageddon
83 Fallout 3: Point Lookout
83 Defense Grid: The Awakening
83 Halo 3: ODST
82 0-D Beat Drop!
82 Halo Wars
81 Stoked: Big Air Edition
80 Space Invaders Extreme
80 Rocket Riot
PS3:
96 Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
92 God of War Collection
91 Killzone 2
90 MLB 09: The Show
89 Demon’s Souls
89 WipEout HD Fury
87 Critter Crunch
87 PixelJunk Shooter
87 Flower
86 Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time
86 Shatter
85 inFAMOUS
83 Yakuza 3
83 Trine
82 Comet Crash
80 Buzz! Quiz World
80 ZEN Pinball
Fortunately the difference is minor, as 360 only has two more rated over 80 and each has plenty of great games to offer. Some of these may likely see release on PS3 sometime in the future as well, as Braid this year. Also, most of the titles in the 360 are not full retail disc based games, and that goes in the PS3′s favor this year as well.
Minus sales, 360 also had the most titles this year (10 more than PS3) with favorable reviews, and regardless of whether this is “easier”, they are still favorably reviewed titles, and the 360 still has a significant lead overall not only the favorably reviewed category, but also the universal acclaim category.
The bottom line is both consoles are doing fine, and even though 360 still has a 95 title lead as far as favorably reviewed titles (no, these did not all come from the year head start), PS3 is making some headway, slowly but surely, and it is a fine console in it’s own right, otherwise I would not have purchased and continue to enjoy one.

360 and PS3 are both awesome gaming systems with great games, period. The PS3 has made great strides this year alone to please it’s fans by finally incorporating trophies in it’s titles as standard for this year’s and future titles and reducing it’s MSRP for entry to less than half of it’s launch price. PSN capability has improved greatly since launch and remained free for gamers, plus they have incorporated Netflix at no extra charge to consumers. Uncharted 2, Infamous, and God of War Collection are all great gaming experiences that were released this year. Congrats to Uncharted 2 winning Spike TV’s GotY. Congrats to Sony and Microsoft for continuing their commitment to their respective consoles and their improvement over time. This gen alone has seen perhaps more advances in home consoles than any other one alone. It is truly a great time to be a gamer, whether you own a 360 or a PS3 alone.

What bothers me is where the heck are those quality made games of yore?
Compared to the 8 bit, 16 bit, 32 bit and 128 Bit era the games of today aren’t as fun and exciting anymore – in a general sense.
The RPGs, the Fighting games, the real time strategy games, the action games? Heck I had more fun with Quake III and Counter Strike.
Seems like a more powerful GPU doesn’t automatically mean fun and excitement anymore.
This also goes for you Nintendo how dare you cheat your way through with a recycled console.
On a positive note and to be fair I will just consider the last 3-4 years just a warm up, an elimination round.
At 2010 all hardware companies should be on an equal standing as far as the industry is concerned. Nintendo made a good comeback after 2 generations, and preping up a new hardware for true high definition battle, XBOX is definitely in the game and is good for 5 or more years, and PS3 got a beating, lost a few rounds but is up and at them for another 5 years or more.
So let’s get it on boys! Let real fun begin come on!

Sorry Roca, it only had three this year and all between 75-79, 360 still has the highest total of favorably reviewed titles released this year.

PS3 is had the Best lineup (just like 2008) and it also put up the highest average of review scores

nice reply btw…..grow up dude!
maybe then you can hold up an argument without insulting others
December 14th, 2009
Was it just a typo roca where you meant to put in “360″ instead of “PS2″?… lol.
December 14th, 2009
Btw, I totally agree Roca, PS3 did have the “highest average of review scores” because they released significantly less. 360 released more and has still has the highest total of favorably reviewed titles not only released just this year, but overall. Nice “average though”. PS3 has less of the favorably reviewed games and they sell less as well… I suppose that is a winning combination? I still enjoy them both anyway though.
December 14th, 2009
acutally your list of “favorable” *games* for the 360 were mostly dlc and games that were also available on the PC and other consoles.
the PS3 had more REAL exclusive (not pc ports or DLCs) with good reviews
December 14th, 2009
Yes, there was more favorably reviewed DLC and downloadable games (some of which are also available on PC) on 360 than PS3 as well. Of course I didn’t discount games like Fat Princess and PixelJunk shooter just because they are available on another platform I have.
December 14th, 2009
Xbox, more game and more games with a high score.
Perfectly honest & simple statement of fact – that is for everyone but the resident PS3 PR spin tw@t.

December 14th, 2009

sorry, it’s called a PSP, and you can play them without owning a PS3.

wrong again (as usual) the PS2 has the most games available on any console.

Fat Princess and Pixeljunk shooters are only available on the PS3. the PSP version is on the way though.
the need to do a different version because the PSP doesn’t have the second stick and the L2 and R2 buttons. they might come out on the PSP in 2010
the Fat Princess game for the PSP is going to be called “Princess: Fistful of Cake”
so they are not available anywhere else in 2009

“wrong again (as usual) the PS2 has the most games available on any console.”
I think he was talking about present gen consoles.
“the need to do a different version because the PSP doesn’t have the second stick and the L2 and R2 buttons.”
Yes, these and other games that are scheduled to release shortly on PSP, or have already been on PSN/PSP before now may have slightly different versions, with some stuff added/edited (Wipeout HD) for the platform/controls, as PS3 games have had in the past when they get ported from the PC. I also didn’t discount games like the universally acclaimed Braid from the PS3′s total of well reviewed titles released this year just because they had already appeared on 360, yet another platform I already own.

ok but where did you hear that Fat Princess and PixelJunk Shooter are available for the PSP?
and by looking at your lost (couple of article below) you did excluded Braind and all the multiplatform titles. but you left all the multiplatform titles on the 360.
“Yes, these and other games that are scheduled to release shortly on PSP”
its been also 6 months since Fat Princess came out. and the PSP will be its own game. Sony Rarely port PS3 games to PSP. they make their own unique version of the game.
they dont want the PSP to battle with the PS3 for software sales but instead to offer a different experience from what its already on the PS3
and the point is as of 2010 Shooters and Fat Princess are PS3 exclusive.

“Who was the best game publisher of 2009, Sony or EA?”
when Sony is being compare to EA (as publisher)…there is really not much to argue

If you could play them both on either platform, it doesn’t make much sense, as a software title sale is a sale regardless. I mean, I thought that was one of the selling points of PSP/PS3 connectivity, is that you could take your game (or at least certain games like these) on the go. You can do this with PS1 titles, and a lot of PSN exclusives are simpler than these games. Maybe it’s a piracy issue?

Looking at Metacritic now, favorably reviewed (75 and above), including all multiplatform titles and DLC titles for PS3, the 360 still has about 95 more. Looking at all of these released only this year, 360 has about 7 more. I did not exclude titles like Braid and multiplatform titles from the PS3 count.

you use “remote play” play on some PSN but it is not like a PS1 game where you can actually transfer it your PSP.
remote play allows you to stream whats on the Screen on your TV to your PSP screen so you can play it anyware. but your PS3 need to be on and it need to be connected online and to your PSP.
it doesnt mean those games are available for the PSP but instead you have the option to “stream them” from the PS3 to the PS3.
you can actuall do the same will ALL PS1 disc-based games but they are still PS1 disc and ps1 games.
ok I will give that…the 360 put up 7 more games but the PS3 had the best lineup of AAA games this year.

btw, sorry for the mistake on Fat P and PixelJ S, I was reading some joystiq articles and got the wrong impression, my bad.
Totally agree on the universal acclaim games as well, and thanks for the explanation on remote play, because I really haven’t messed with it yet.
I can also understand the “unique experience” they want on PSP away from what has already been released on PS3 and PSN… I just don’t understand (unless it is specifically because of psp piracy issues) why they can’t make these titles available for download on PSP as well when they come out on PSN… because it’s not really like they would be “competing” for sales, unless they want to make more money for something that is only slightly building on top of the original game? I.e. keep the original away from PSP so more will buy it when the PSP version comes out at retail? I don’t know, I just think if the game is quality and the custom PSP version that comes out later adds significantly more, then people that really liked the original would want to have both, and be able to play both on both platforms if they have them.

idk what the issue is but it can be many things like trophies (no support for it on the PSP), lack of a second stick and 2 shoulder buttons and like you said maybe it’s because of piracy.
so far there are no PSN games that can be transfer to your PSP only PS1 games and Minis.
but yeah if you still have PS1 disc laying around you can insert the disc to you PS3 and play through you PSP (some of the actually look better on a smaller scree)
you can also do the same with some PS3/PSN games like PixelJunk Monster, BlazBlue, Lair, Bionic Commando Rearmed and a few more.
