Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 sales on PC disappointing

December 15, 2009

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 sales on PC disappointing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is an absolute smash hit on the consoles. Currently, both the Xbox 360 and PS3 version sales are in the millions in the U.S. alone. However, it seems like the PC platform did not perform as well as its console brethren.

According to Kotaku, Gamasutra managed to squeeze out the PC sales figures for COD: MW2 from NPD and it looks bleak. The game managed to sell approximately 170k on the PC at retail. This figure does not account for Steam purchase. Considering the active players via Steam, one can estimate that about 100k purchases have been made online at the minimum.

Regardless, the once mighty PC sales for the popular Call of Duty franchise have dramatically dwindled. I wonder how much impact the boycott had on the sales of PC version. It will be interesting to see if PC sales will eventually pick up later on.

They are trying to kill the increasingly un-innovative PC gaming market, and keeping with the ready made, cheaper single/double platform development. A pC game that has to be designed for a broad range of Hardware costs far more to make well than a console title. They purposed scuttled their own craft to keep from having to pay any heed to PC gamers.

Until PC gaming can provide cheaper AND superior innovations in gaming as the consoles have in the last 15 years, it will die. And rightfully so. Doesn’t make Activision right for their tactics, inversely wrong infact, as they are trying to hasten the demise of non MMO pc gaming. No body is paying 20 bucks a month for FPS online gaming, and support (independent servers, CS) after the sale is pure financial liability.

    Cocksucking corporations.

  2. me_:

Not quite as thin as your “DLC does sell” article but close.

  3. me_:

    ops “DLC doesn’t sell”

  4. SW:

    Good.

    Fuck you Infinity Ward.

We tried to tell ‘em they were going down the wrong path, but they wouldn’t listen.

  5. Spideydog:

Yeah, now they will just create for consoles. Would have been better if the consoles boycotted them as well.

  6. CON:

Fuck PC gamers. They want everything for nothing and act as if it’s their devine right to have everything their way. They get their games cheaper and expect dedicated servers. They can join the fucking queue behind console owners.

  7. JofaMang:

As a dedicated PC gamer I should be offended, but I agree with you CON. PC gamers can be selfish and elitist, and while I don’t buy the every-copy-pirated-equals-one-lost-sale line, there is a certain truth to PC piracy being somewhat responsible.

But CON, might you not agree that by jacking the price and eliminating dedicated servers, that they may have caused this sort of backlash? I know at least 10 people personally who chose not to buy MW2 for the PC. A few of them got it for their console, but mostly they stayed away.

The sum of the known online petitions is believed to be over 250,000 signatures. If those were in earnest (i boycotted the game for PC, but didn’t even sign a petition) then there HAD to be a significant loss of sales due to the way they have treated PC gamers.

If IW/Activision had listened to their fans, they might have tripled or quadrupled that sales number by now, and be closer to the PS3 volumes. I discussed above why I believe they don’t care.

  8. CON:

I think IW are probaby too busy bouncing on their bouncy castles filled with prostitutes whilst having coke snowball fights to give a shit.

  9. Roca.:

CoD 7 or Medal of Honor next year?

  10. CON:

    nice hijack

  11. Roca.:

    huh?

  12. phranctoast:

    Medal of Honor.

2010 is the Treyarch year. No thanks.

  13. CON:

I can’t see everyone jumping on the Afgan bandwagan with Medal of Honor, sorry.

World at War sold very well for xbox. Enjoyed the story

  14. phranctoast:

“I can’t see everyone jumping on the Afgan bandwagan with Medal of Honor, sorry.”

But having the United States Nuked and the White house on fire is more up your alley. I understand.

  15. Roca.:

I just noticed MW2 was missing some stuff from the first one.

    - no “night” maps or “night vision goggles” (expect them to come out via DLCs)

    - no “Team Tactical” Mode

    - not that many maps to play (they will add more via DLC also)

    gotta love IW

  16. Roca.:

uhmm apparently the only way to get night vision goggles for MW2 is by getting the $150 Prestige Edition, because they took that feature out of the game.

    what are the odds

  17. Barnabe Jones:

I guess it all depends how you look at it.

I would call the COD MW2 sales on consoles “disappointing”.

  18. phranctoast:

    @Roca.

They added Spec Ops so I can’t give them to much hell. That addition was probably the the best addition to the whole game.

  19. Roca.:

“They added Spec Ops so I can’t give them to much hell. That addition was probably the the best addition to the whole game.”

LoL they need to do something after TrayArch nailed with their own Nazi Zombie mode. that alone was worth half of the price of the game.

but I understand your point of view, Im just not use to see games missing features from the previous games. specially if the previous games was a good one on its own

  20. CON:

    @Phrac

At least it’s more neutral. World at War lets you play as the Russians when they won WWII in Europe, which was a nice change also.

  21. CON:

    @barney

“I guess it all depends how you look at it.

I would call the COD MW2 sales on consoles “disappointing”.”

So what would you call Killzones sales then?

  22. phranctoast:

The Russians (Soviet Union) were allied forces in that war.

anyway I was clearly talking about MW2.

  23. phranctoast:

“So what would you call Killzones sales then?”

also disappointing but for a different reason.

You see. BJ is disappointed that MW2 sold as much as it did when aside from SpecOps, its basically MW1 with a cool 4 hour campaign and the a very similar MP campaign with a couple of new maps.

    Get it now.. :)

  24. Roca.:

“So what would you call Killzones sales then?”

Killzones? is that a new game?

  25. Barnabe Jones:

    ;) pretty much

  26. JofaMang:

Yeah, no trophies for the online in MW2 is really fucking dumb, as that is where the majority of players will spend all their time.

  27. phranctoast:

    @BJ.
my mind reading skills are crazy scary. ;)

  28. SW:

I was willing to overlook the fact that it is just CoD4 w/ a new paint job, heck I figured I’d get at least 150 hours out of it on MP but alas it wasn’t so.

I can’t even be bothered to download it to try it out.

Oh, and the best thing about the ‘whiner PC gamer’ line, is that when MS eliminated that chat option for XBL, guess who started THIER petitions?!? The 360 owners…

  29. phranctoast:

I liked the “expect dedicated servers line”

No one expected IW or Activision to provide ded servers. Just write code to allow people to buy them. So simply put to support something that is the complete norm as far as PC online games are concerned.

  30. CON:

    @phrac

It’s still nice to see a mainstream game glorifying the russian effort. It’s largely been ignored as a result of the cold war.

As for MW2 it’s not as if you play as the attackers.

  31. phranctoast:

    “@phrac

It’s still nice to see a mainstream game glorifying the russian effort. It’s largely been ignored as a result of the cold war.”

Kind of scary if you ask me. They weren’t too much better than the Germans.

“As for MW2 it’s not as if you play as the attackers.”

You must of skipped the Airport scene. Probably because you were too offended to play as a terrorist huh. ;)

  32. JofaMang:

Long ago I opened myself up to the possibility that the north american propaghanda during the cold war was very wrong. I am not saying that the USSR was a saintly country, but considering all that the US has acted internationally over the same timeframe (Vietnam, Panama, the Middle east) and how it is treated in the media here, perhaps the russians are the devil’s red army as we have been lead to believe.

    Just saying. ;)

  33. JofaMang:

    Should read:
“russians AREN’T the devil’s red army”

  34. phranctoast:

    blasphemy…lmao.

  35. CON:

“As for MW2 it’s not as if you play as the attackers.”

I was actually referring about your comments about US being nuked and whitehouse on fire. Of course I skipped that scene, just like you ;)

  36. Roca.:

if you skip all the controversial levels then you get like an hour of gamplay :)

  37. CON:

Why even buy it at all ROCA? LOL

  38. Roca.:

I play about 5 mins of the single player mode.

thats about it. the MP is actually (just as MW1) but its not enough to justified a $60 purchase. glad I bought for half price

    and to answer your question:
“Why even buy it at all ROCA?”

I had $30 to spare at that time.

  39. phranctoast:

Amazon has Assassins creed for $40 right now.

  40. phranctoast:

    AC2 that is.

  41. Roca.:

There’s less than a week to go until the PS3 beta of Battlefield: Bad Company 2 ends. Today DICE shared some statistics about the beta, which 300,000+ players have played since November 19th.

    Total kills = 45.42M
    9.4M kills from Vehicles
    3.43M Vehicles Destroyed
    380K Houses Destroyed
    1.01M Marksman Headshots
    Total number of points awarded = 10 100 094 360
Total number of Revives = 2.52M
Total Repair Tool kills = 15.58K
    Total Defibrillator Kills = 12.69k
    Total Knife Kills = 1.69M
    Total C4 Kills = 730.81K

A PC beta for BC2 is expected to begin in early 2010 (SW is going to enjoy this one)

  42. SW:

God forbid anyone kills digital innocents in video game…

    *shock*

;) While I enjoyed the bad press IW got for it, I have to say that I think it was such a huge over reaction.

  43. CON:

    GTA is easily the worst

  44. Rhino:

MW2 on the PC was shit. Plain and simple. By taking away things like dedicated servers what did they expect?

Frankly I regret giving them my $79. Won’t be making that mistake again.

  45. Saber_HAHAha:

Tremendous boo-boo from Infinity Ward right there (boo-boo is baby language for “mistake” if you didn’t know. I’m simply catering to the average internet poster). If they would’ve kept things dedicated servers and large matches, they would have more sales and a better image in the PC community. I don’t know much about the PC version, but it scored lower than the console versions.

Huge over-reaction, however. If Infinity Ward was a professional golfer, it would be doing every lady in the country.

  46. Roca.:

“If Infinity Ward was a professional golfer, it would be doing every lady in the country.”

that spot is already taken ;)

  47. phranctoast:

I’m sorry to disappoint every lady in the country but I’m not a professional golfer. :)

  48. JofaMang:

I have a buddy who is a golf pro (not pro circuit, but certified golf professional; runs a course, gives lessons, manages the greens keeping team, the clubhouse etc) and he is no catch. He gets laid the most out of all of my single buddies, because of the women he meets in the course of his job. From lonely housewives to college girls, he doesn’t discriminate (like I said, he’s no catch hah, takes what he can get, which apparently is a LOT)

I don’t understand. I got a lot of action in my juniour hockey days, but nothing to what he sees on a daily basis, heh.

  49. Akaro:

Good day everyone. It´s been a while since my last post. Lots of work fortunely.

Seems like PC gamers were sincere with their boycott. Sadly, that hardly made a dent in sales in the end =S.

On the golfer topic. My girlfriend´s boss plays golf. He is not that good looking but the ladies from others sections/regions that know him die for him, for some reason. I don´t think he is professional but is competent. How competent? Well, he just won a car in the last tournament he participated. And week in Cancún in the tournament before. Could that be part of the sex appeal?

  50. JofaMang:

In a related low-effort-high-accuracy sport, most curlers I know get lots of trim, hah. Curling chicks are easy~

  51. The Future of Sega:

Nobody wants to sit around jerking around a fucking mouse to play video games EXCEPT for nerds. :) I assume that’s the reason for COD6′s poor PC sales.

  52. phranctoast:

We need another mouse and keyboard vs gamepad for FPS’s discussion again. The poor console gamepad people get owned in the debate though.

  53. Roca.:

you cant really be more accurate than point and clicking ;)

  54. phranctoast:

I’d love to play with a mouse and keyboard vs anyone with a controller. It’s obviously an unfair advantage to me, but it would quickly shut up the people that legitimately believe that the controller is better for FPS’s.

  55. JofaMang:

It depends on the game really, heavy weighted FPS like KZ2 and GeoW2 would benefit the least from KBM, while twitch shooters like MW2 obviously would be more efficiently played with responsive KBM controls.

  56. kev:

this article only proves what i’ve always known; PC gamers simply don’t matter to the bottom line.

now get back in your basements and shut up!! :)

  57. Liquid:

yeah and kev u climb back into your cave
