PS3 could have used network storage or flash drive
With the release of the PS3 Slim, Sony reduced the size of the console as well as its power consumption. However, it seems like the PS3 Slim at one point could have ended up with either a flash or network storage.
In an interview between Nikkei and Sony (via Kotaku), it was revealed that the company entertained the idea of radically changing the PS3’s storage solution to dramatically reduce the size of the console. Sony looked at taking the hard drive out and implementing a cloud-like network storage solution, where everything would be stored remotely. This is interestingly similar to what OnLive is trying to do with video games as well.
The other option Sony was looking at was using flash storage for the PS3. Since flash storage sizes have come a long way, this option would have been possible but the cost of the device is still high. In the end Sony decided to go with the standard 2.5-inch notebook hard drives.
Personally, I think Sony made the right choice sticking with the notebook drives. Otherwise, if I owned a Slim I wouldn’t have been able to pick up a 320GB for $49 on Black Friday to upgrade my PS3 hard drive.

It will be interesting to see what they come up with next gen now that the technology is in place for a variety of storage options.

As long as it isn’t a cloud based system, should be awesome.
December 15th, 2009
Dude where’d my fucking cloud go??? LOL a setup like that would just be asking to be hacked.
December 15th, 2009
Yeah, cloud-based systems are a bad idea.
1) What if your not connected to the internet?
2) How in the world would a cloud-based system handle a mandatory install? I don’t feel like seeing my bandwith usage from my ISP increase by any large, avoidable amounts like that.

2.5″ is good and cheap.

As great as DLC is for inpulse buys, it’s always nice to know that it’s on your HD once purchased.

so I read Developers and Publisher are giving up on the 360 and Japan and some of them are not even supporting them any more
as you know FFXII is a PS3 exclusive in Japan (by the way, it comes out in 2 days). so is Tecmo’s Quantum [Quantum Theory]. there is also rumors that MS might just pulled out of Japan since the PS2 (a last gen system) has been outselling the 360 since the 360 launched in 2005
December 15th, 2009
The Japs hate all things american…..with the exception of baseball. No matter how good the 360 is they won’t buy it ROCA.

Jewish American Princess?

Jap is actually a slur. Most Japanese find it offensive after the WWII.
And CON, iPods sell fine in Japan. In fact, they were selling better than Sony’s MP3 Players until just recently when Sony’s sales beat them.
December 15th, 2009
Don’t bother trying to reason with CON and his racial tendencies. He feels completely justified in his superiority complex.
December 15th, 2009
speaking of Baseball.
hey Roca.
Matsui left the Yankees for the Angels. believe that?
December 15th, 2009
wtf….!!
when did that happen?
I knew the got Granderson (I dont like him btw) but I never heard Matsui went on to sign with the Angels
December 15th, 2009
wat is going on with the Angels? they get all the left over from the Yanks (Abreu in 2008)
December 15th, 2009
lots of stuff happened recently.
-Curtis Granderson from Detroit to the NYY
-Petite was resigned to the Yankees
-Halladay is going to the Philies but they lost Cliff Lee, who goes to Seattle.
-Red Soc got Lackey who was a free agent as well as Cameron for Outfield.
-Jason Bay wont sign back with the Red Sox leaving opportunities for him, but the Mets have been eyeing him so they can get rid of Delgado.
The Lackey thing hurt. Red Sox starting pitching is pretty damn good.
Maybe the Yanks will get Cliff Lee in a year after he’s elgible for free agency.
December 15th, 2009
Lakey is pretty good. but the Red Sox has no offense without J. Bay
the Angels are not going to be as good as they were last season. they relied more on their speend and by losing Figgins and bring Matsui I dont see mucn happening there.
Phillies really sent C. Lee away? they are going to regret this one! trust me

@Sorral
Sorry if I’ve annoyed you lol but how many japs do you know?? I’m proud to say I’m friends with one who proudly refers to himself as a “fucking Jap” when constantly being mistaken as chinese.

*face palm*
Let’s see.. we’ve covered our hatred of the Japanese, The Gays, Americans, and Latinos. Who else are we missing?
December 15th, 2009
BJ,
Are we counting past racist comments? Roca’s jab at Toshi for being Indian can go into that list.
December 15th, 2009
Ehh I wasn’t annoyed at all. Just felt like saying what it was since many don’t know about it.
I know a handful of Japanese(I’m in the US currently), and as far as I remember, they took offensive for hearing it from some random person.
December 15th, 2009
The Angels have Granderson and Matsui??? They’re going to be stacked next year.
December 15th, 2009
Oh wait, Granderson is a Yankee. They’re stacked too.
December 15th, 2009
Oh I suppose in america there will always be issues in that regard.
December 15th, 2009
your into Baseball Harry? nice
yeah Granderson is a Yankee now. I hope he can actually hit for average now.
December 16th, 2009
Yep roca, they switched on a ‘sport only’ HD free to air channel over here about a year and a half ago. We get a few baseball games a week during your summer which I have been getting into. They’re currently playing a fair bit of NBA and NFL here now.
December 16th, 2009
I’m looking forward to Granderson taking advantage of the short right field in Yankees Stadium.
@harry.
Did you get to watch any of the MLB playoffs?
December 16th, 2009
I want the Yankees to get Matt Holiday. he is the best outfield on the market this year and he can also benefit from the Yankees lineup.
December 16th, 2009
he’ll end up costing a lot. Probably more than he’s worth. I’d take Bay over him in for financial reasons but if they could afford Holliday, then go for it.
If that happens Damon is definitely not coming back.
December 16th, 2009
Since this is already so far offtopic, heh, I just wanted to mention that I ended up watching all 4 seasons of dexter in about 3 days. Jesus christ is season 4 a mindfuck.
Love the show, and hate having to wait 9 months for the next season (though the way season 4 ended it could very well have been a series ender)
December 16th, 2009
I’m very glad no one spoiled that episode. Geeze. Caught me by surprise.
December 16th, 2009
I love the show, but I think immersing myself into it so much had changed the way my brain works, heh. Awesome show, and I wish I had gotten into it earlier, though some of the episode ending cliffhangers would have been hard to take if I was waiting to watch it each week.
December 16th, 2009
Even after this last season I still rate Season 2 as my favorite. Followed by 1, 4, and then 3.
What can I say. He kills so much less in the last two seasons and my taste for vengeance is hardly quenched.
December 16th, 2009
Plus Lila is SUPER hot. Miguel is an intriquing character, and John Lithgow was amazing as usually in season 4, but I would agree, season 2 was the most entertaining in the way of graphics vengeance.
December 16th, 2009
how the hell this went from Baseball to Daxter (again) lol?
whats the next topic?
December 16th, 2009
It also was the most suspenseful as they were looking for him.
December 16th, 2009
@ phranctoast,
Yeah, I caught a few playoff games. We even got the tiebreaker between the Tigers and the Twins. Not that either team deserved to be in the playoffs, their records were pretty lousy considering they were the top 2 teams of their division.
December 17th, 2009
Ugh Baseball, next we’ll be tlkaing Cricket or Curling
December 17th, 2009
It’s funny the way that works harry, but I agree that neither team should have been there. Thats what makes the American League East such a difficult division.
You have the Tampa Bay Rays, the Boston Red Sox and the NY Yankees. all three have been to the world series in the last 3 years
December 17th, 2009
lol @ curling.
I had to look it up as I thought you were talking about working out your biceps. lol
December 17th, 2009
Indeed. I felt for the Rays, they had another good season but nothing to show for it. Even the Rangers did ok.
December 18th, 2009
Poor performance by Kazmir and some injuries where they practically had none the previous year hurt the Rays this year.
The Rangers have a couple of my favorite players that I’d like to see on the Yankees. Ian Kinsler being one, but it’s tough to discount what Robinson Cano has done for the yanks once he’s actually. He looked like golden glove material at second this year and his BA is always amongst the highest. he was going for the batting title two years in a row (not this year).
