As Gran Turismo 5 demo hits PSN, Yamauchi talks up game’s physics engine
The Gran Turismo 5 demo is finally here, landing on PSN Dec. 17. And although it’s a time trial demo for the purposes of the GT Academy, and so only contains one track and an early build of the game, it’s still damn good for those of us who are fans of the series. And Kazunori Yamauchi has chosen now to start waxing lyrical about the game.
The GT Academy is a chance for Gran Turismo drivers to become real drivers, as Mike detailed earlier this month. The Sixth Axis played the press version of the demo and posted a video of their first attempt to YouTube, as seen below.
Even this early build looks pretty damn good, and speaking to Famitsu magazine in Japan, Kazunori Yamauchi suggests it’ll feel good as well. PS3 Center reports him as describing the new physics engine as “dynamic” and stating that “We feel that this could be nearly the same feel as actually driving.”
Gran Turismo has always billed itself as ‘the real driving simulator’ and maybe GT5 will truly deliver on that. I guess we’ll know more once the demo is out in the wild.

I expect this game to be good. No, I DEMAND it be good. It will be the #1 title for the PS3 so far, and has an awesome brand history. So far, it’s like it’s developing slower than George Bush in grammar class. Let’s hope is doesn’t score the same marks.
3 Forza games, and as of far, we get one (excellent) quarter-game that I beat in a day. It damn well better be GODLY. If it isn’t… well, I won’t care, I’m not a racing fan, but Sony will be up to their necks in hydrometafloric ACID (which probably doesn’t exist, but sounds beastly all the same).
Can’t wait for tomorrow, can’t wait for March 2010.

This looks like a very early build. Noticed that the backgrounds looked a little barren and 2d, there weren’t any tyre marks left when the car was skidding etc.
I am assuming this will all be included in the final build?

This is just highway robbery. I’ll pass. I’ve played the first demo of this crap and sucked HARD. The graphics were outstanding but the steering of the car was absolutely horrible. It was a nightmare! I’ll wait till the reviews come out before I buy this one.

3 Forza games? Sorry it’s only been 2 this gen.
This game looks so ordinary. Considering ps3 racers can’t by forza I suppose it may be worth picking up but I was expecting it to jump out of the screen because its GT! How is this different from any other racer out there apart from the fact it’s taken half a decade to release?

I played Forza 3 last weekend. Aside from GT5p which I haven’t played, GTHD that came out early within the first year of the PS3′s life looked better. The street alone aside from the car models blow whatever I seen in the Forza 3 demo out of the water.

I have played the demo, and my experienced wasnt all that great. Cockpit view looked horrible, cars flips and bounce, car models are not as details as the ones in GT5p.

I pulled some review rating of gamespot between 2 racing game Forza and Grand Turismo. I added Uncharted 2 for comparison.
Gamespot rating of:

Grand Turismo 3 – 9.4
Grand Turismo 2 – 8.5
Grand Turismo 1 – 8.6

Forza 3 – 9.5

Uncharted 2 – 9.5
Clearly uncharted 2 with rating of 9.5 vs Forza 3 with rating 9.5 should both have equal or feature wise excellent game.
I rely on Gamespot rating to help me decide with my game purchase. It got to start somewhere. If I have both console I would try both of them just to see which one I would get. Unfortunately, forza at this moment is the only one out there. So to all who claim GT5 is the best, well I guess they are reviewing forza and gt demo. Agreed?

but yeah I played the FM3 demo and I can say I was impressed just like many of us who are racing fans and were a bit disappointed by the demo.
Phranc compared it to the GTHD demo which came out a month after the PS3 was released (Dec 2006). I never thought of that but I can agree because that demo did looked good!

than Forza 3 did on one of Best Buys 1080p TV.
One thing I will give F3, is I really did like the rewind feature. I know it’s nothing new to racers, but it’s still a cool feature when you’re just getting used to the controls.

Also my 1080i TV was rear projection and the artifacting and blur on LCD’d is distracting in comparison.
I think the biggest difference is that F3 was in 720p natively and GTHD was 1080p (even if I couldn’t achieve that) so it just looked more pristine.

Games can be in development for as long as they want as long as:
1. There are plenty of new games being released on that console
2. The development time is justified by the game’s content and quality.
#1 is already true for the PS3 (although the sim-racing genre is weak right now on PS3), and #2 should be true. If this game isn’t much better than Forza 3, that’s a loss. There is no doubt that Forza 3 is incredible, but GT5 is lined up to be nearly perfect. All I want is much better AI and a good damage system.

I don’t know if you really said that ODST looks better than U2 like Roca is claiming, but if so, you just have to know that ODST and U2 are like mud and diamonds (graphically). Almost every critic agrees that Uncharted 2 is the best looking game to hit a console, but ODST hasn’t gotten graphical praise anywhere near that. And trust me, it’s for a reason.

The Panny is a great player and at that price a bit of a steal.
Afaik it doesn’t have .mkv support – but it is highly rated for Blu-ray & DVD image quality.
Price will be your decider I guess but if you want my opinion about the best Blu-ray stand-alone right now I’d have to say the LG 390.
All the features you’re likely to want or need.
The big one missing from most Blu-ray players is multi-region for Blu-ray, some service menu hex codes/hacks are out there but lots of players lose that once the firmware is updated, some require a hardware mod.

I have seen nothing to change my view that it is very good but I’ve seen better (on PC especially…..but then PC beats all the consoles for eye-candy).
The best of PS3 to me looks like the best of Xbox.
Sorry if you don’t agree but the idea that it is a matter of obvious and clear distinction is, in my view, a fantasy PS3 owners are now pushing

I know there’s a chance that you were misquoted or Roca was exaggerating your statement. However, you made no attempt to deny that, and I’ll stick by one-and-only argument (I did not mention any games besides ODST and U2) that I made with you in my previous comment: no matter how you twist your tongue, Halo 3: ODST and Uncharted 2 are NOT graphically arguable. There’s a gaggle of them all look much the same, U2 looks a little er ‘different’ (I mentioned before about contrast, colour saturation and sharpness) but I do not accept that necessarily makes it actually better, just different.
It’s certainly nothing even close to photographic realism, which in my view is the test.
I’ve seen PCs which can reproduce an almost photographically real image (in game) but none of the consoles get close, yet.

ODST was not that good looking! It looked dated but it played beautifully! Amazing game/add-on lol but the parts where you play as the rook look terrible and dull.

Whatever you think of U2 you are talking about (at best) a couople of review points difference.
Like I said, a little while back we were treated to Roca’s standard PS3 fanboy wisdom – when it was an Xbox game reviewed & put a few points better than a PS3 game it, apparantly, meant there was no real discernable difference.
When it’s a PS3 game that is reviewed and said to be couple of points better suddenly it’s proof positive of a vast gulf between the consoles.

I have to agree UC2 is pretty, but if the same game was done on 360, the difference would be minor, if any. I was not overwhelmed by it’s graphics, but it was a great game, and this whole “superiority” argument is actually quite trite. In any case, I didn’t think I would be the first one here to get the God of War Collection platinum trophy… fun stuff that… aaand back to GameFly with it now that I’m done… awesome games btw.

The thing that annoys me about happy the most with this uncharted 2 conversation about graphics, is me and him made a bet on whether Halo Reach would be the most graphically intense game next year, and if the same type of bet was made this year with U2, all he’s proving is he would never concede at all.
I would have long ago thrown up the white flag on this. How many people need to praise the graphics in order for it to be accepted as the best this gen?
Even the photo realistic graphics argument (F3 and AC6) was shot down and agreed upon by him as being easier to achieve due to less background objects being rendered. One could almost make the argument then that Dragons Lair and Space Ace games are graphically the most superior to anything out there with that type of logic.
Anyway.
Happy. Go check out the latest Heavy Rain videos on Gametrailers. They kind of upped the ante in the graphics dept. and is going to make the upcoming year with our bet all the more fun

Thanks for the Iron Man trailer. I love those Marvel and DC movies. I was greatly disappointed with Superman Returns but watched it 10 times anyway. I’m one of the Biggest superman fans going. Roca, I didn’t say that. I said if it was done on the 360, the differences would be minor, if any. This is taking into consideration that the same team spent the same years trying to utilize every single aspect of the 360 system in combination with creating new programming tricks in order to play on it’s strengths.
As it stands, I’m glad Sony managed to get a couple of exclusive games (UC2 and KZ2) with a slight graphics edge over the competition’s. They need this now and in future exclusives as well in order to gain some kind of ground… as it is though I doubt the mainstream will notice or even care that much, as the difference is slight, and it is in only a relatively few titles. If people really cared that much about graphics, everybody would be buying the PC version of MW2 or Dragon Age instead of the 360 versions, as they would see a much more obvious leap in graphics.
Regardless, the graphics engines will likely continue to improve for both consoles, especially as sales give incentive to developers to continue to use their resources and innovate.

Nevermind the sneak previews of a couple of games to come (they – all – can always be cast in a favourable light when it’s not a game in your hands) but what if U2 or very close to it are ‘it’; as far as PS3 goes?
ND reckoned they had to practically by-pass the GPU & max out every SPU of the Cell CPU.
So what if (small software tweaks aside) that’s it?
Personally (if the same question is put as regards Xbox) I wouldn’t be at all surprised.
I’m expecting Alan Wake to raise the bar but I think we are at or very close to ‘it’ for this gen.
(and my bet is that they will both end it having ended up looking much the same all the way through)

If they did most of the work on the SPU’s I’m amazed at the fact that they could get away with what appears to me as the best looking game this gen. I’m highly suspect though. I really believe both the GPU and the SPU’s were used but this time as opposed to uncharted 1 almost entirely the GPU being used more work was issued to the SPU’s. I still think there was a misinterpretation in NG’s statement.
If not…..WOW… to think that the the PS3′s CPU could handle the game without help is mind boggling.
I would be sad if this is it, but I really don’t believe that to be the case.

Did you hear about the original intention for the PS3?
I’ve read that it was originally planned to have no GPU and 2 x the Cell CPU.
If that is true then Cell was always developed with that capacity in mind.
The tale is that they realised 2 x Cell (at launch particularly) would be prohibitively expensive and so 1 Cell got dumped and the then most cost effective GPOU they could source (an Nvidia 7800) was used.
In as much as it’s impressive that they could get that out of the Cell it does make me wonder just how much of a dead weight and a mistake that GPU was.

I will agree. I don’t see what is so special about the UC2 Graphics either. I don’t know why PS3 game graphics are being hailed like they are the best thing ever when I’ve seen similar quality in other games. I personally believe Sony pays off the reviewers to say this. After all it was the one black eye that plauged the PS3 in the begining. Does UC2 look good? Yes it does. Is it the best graphical game ever? It’s up there with the best of them. Being superior to anything else is a Lie. The same goes for Killzone. It’s a shame that Sony whole operation is built on a Lie.

I could be wrong, but I believe if the difference is not huge, as in say, Dragon Age console to PC version huge, and at a similar price, then I see little becoming of it.

I can see where you are coming from. You are stating that you have more discriminating tastes and you don’t take things at face value. You don’t like commercialized hollywood crap and I can see why. I only like a few of these titles. I am very selective about the blu rays and games that I buy. You have this in common with Xbox and PS3 gamers on both sides.
As far as UC2 goes, if you don’t think it is the best looking game, then that is fine. I personally still think that the graphics are superior to any Xbox 360 game that I have seen at this time. Like I stated earlier, I can only go by what I’ve seen. I have yet to see a Xbox game that looks better graphically yet. Howvever, this doesn’t mean that there are not any good games on the Xbox 360.

Yes, UC2 is pretty. Unfortunately it’s only one game, and KZ2 was a half blip on the radar screen this year. However, this doesn’t mean that there are not any other good games on the Playstation 3.

Yes it did get better reviews than MLB 09: The Show, Wipeout HD Fury, Demon’s Souls, Critter Crunch, Flower and those other PS3 games you have played this year, but not better than Forza 3 or Uncharted 2. I haven’t played ODST, Halo Wars, L4D2, or Ninja Blade because I am not that interested in them, as is the case with KZ2. I’m not greatly interested in shooters in general, but I may give some of them a try at sometime. Borderlands and Shadow Complex were great though, have you played them yet?

@ CarlB I dont need to own a 360 to see the shitty graphics from the Halo Reach Trailer, L4D2 gamplay videos, ODST shitty graphics is noticable even on the box art.
Gears of War 1 and 2 are by far the 2 best looking 360 games. nothing have come close ever since

…like I said I have and will continue to enjoy games for decades that don’t have achievements whether they be old or new (right now they are on PSP, PS1/2, Wii, DS, and older games on PC)…
