Sony on 2010: PS3, PS4, PSN, motion control, & backwards compatibility
It seems as though each new year since the PS3 launched has been declared Sony’s year. And it hasn’t actually turned out that way, with both the Wii and Xbox 360 doing as well as or better than the Playstation 3. However, Sony does have big plans for 2010.
John Koller, Sony’s head of PlayStation marketing, spoke to GamePro about all manner of different topics, and here are some choice quotes.
On PSN:
I think the PSN is going to end up being a critical part of what we do in 2010. The PSN is really a big pillar where we’ll go. Those are going to be three big pillars as we go into 2010, motion control gaming, 3D gaming, and the PlayStation Network.
On Motion Control:
I think the areas that are going to be really critical to our success will be family games, as well as shooters and sports games. Those are going to be the areas that will really define success, because they’re areas that quite honestly, I think Project Natal and the Wii are going to have trouble matching, from a differentiation standpoint.
On Backwards Compatibility:
With the backwards compatibility issue, we’re at a point now in the cycle of the PlayStation 3 that there’s so many PS3 games available, so many strong PS3 games, that it’s really become far less of an issue than I think a lot people — particularly the media — are asking about. In all of our studies, we’ve noticed that it’s fallen off the map in terms of demand. There’s not many requests for it much at all anymore. There’s really a high level of satisfaction on the PlayStation 3 for PS3 games themselves.
On a new PS3 or PS4:
There’s no plans in place right now to be changing the current model of the PS3, since we just launched this one. We’re getting this into market and obviously getting a lot of traction. That said, in terms of Sony as a broader entity, we’re built on innovation and a lot of what you’ll see in terms of changes to the PS3 are going to be done through firmware for the foreseeable future.
I think Sony will have a strong 2010 but whether the PS3 manages to build up a momentum which will see it ‘win’ the year against the Wii and Xbox 360 I’m not convinced. There are some truly stunning games on their to the console but, as we’ve seen before, it isn’t all about the games. If it were, the Wii would be a long-forgotten relic in the console hall of fame.

This year definitely was a PS3 year in terms of new content and improvements. Sales is the only argument, and quite frankly, I couldn’t care less. I would still want to see the total worldwide sales for each console at the end of the year. North America isn’t the only gaming territory.
They should put BC back in, though. There are tons of great PS3 games now, but it would be a plus to go back to the old days. Even just so that people don’t need to plug their PS2 in anymore. Does the PS2 even sell any more? It would shut down a lot of arguments if they could just put it in.
As for the 3 big pillars: PSN, yes, 3D gaming, oh GOD yes, motion sensing, not excited. Ever since the disastrous Wiimote (whether you flick your wrist or wave your arms around while strafing and rolling, the results are the same for most games. Please note: I own one), I’ve been a little paranoid. Please, make it good.
December 16th, 2009
I think you’re being a bit harsh Dave. If the 360 did beat it in sales it’s not going to be by much. Being neck and neck with your main rival isn’t exactly a bad place to be.
The only people who are disappointed with the PS3s performance are those that compare it to the PS2.
December 16th, 2009
PS3 has sold millions of units. Sony has a killer line up of games coming up. It’s only getting better and better.
December 16th, 2009
Xbox beat PS3 in console sales and games sales this year. End of. Spin it whatever way you want.
2010 YEAR OF THE PLAYSTATION!!!
December 16th, 2009
Yeah I’ve heard all the spin before. Just keep churning out games that are worthwhile and I’ll be happy.
December 16th, 2009
am looking forward to the motion controller. should be a laugh. i also hope resistance 3 is announced next year.
December 17th, 2009
wow just reading a couple of articles, that KEV guy is a real downer *down syndrome*
December 17th, 2009
new PSN features coming, 3D gaming, 1:1 Motion controller and a Killer lineup.
things are looking great for the PS3
December 17th, 2009
I really think that since the ps3 motion controls function using the eye toy camera, head tracking will be very easy to accomplish. This would be very innovative, provide 3-d visuals and offer something nintendo and microsoft don’t.
I own a wii and will be shocked if ps3 owners don’t love FPS with motion controls. After playing the few really good ones the wii offers it is hard to go back to a gamepad. Point and shoot mechanics are incredible when done right. Of course this has more to do with a pointing device than actual motion sensitivity.
December 17th, 2009
2009 was already a Win year for PS3. It has the best games of any platform according to IGN and Metacritic.
I feel sorry for the owners so wrapped up in their Microsoft loyalty, that they are missing out on all this.
2010 is also shaping up to be a killer PS3 year too. Gran Turismo Academy launches today, and i’m gonna be trying to win those real race seats in the Toyoya 24hr night race.
December 17th, 2009
I can’t wait for the PS4!
December 17th, 2009
“2009 was already a Win year for PS3. It has the best games of any platform according to IGN and Metacritic.”………………
Yet still couldn’t shift sales. Fail.
December 17th, 2009
with GOW 3,FF13,gt5 and all those gr8 mutiplatforms comin out….2010 is already ps3`s….
im hardly excited abt 3d gamin(y wud i buy a lcd once again) nd ps4(i can wait)
December 17th, 2009
uhmmm besides putting up the best lineup than any other console in 2009. The PS3 also sold the most hardware so far in 2009.
but who cares about sales. you buy a gaming console because of its games and not because of its sales number right.
December 17th, 2009
I agree with me_ and Gamer_Thumb.
PS3 is not doing bad at all. Nintendo is doing great. Xbox has proved itself a worthy adversary and motion sensing controlers will keep evolving (hopefully with headtracking).
Competence is invigorating the industry as expected.
December 17th, 2009
It would be interesting to see the total number of games sold and not the totals for specific games.
I have a feeling the Xbots would be eating crow.
December 17th, 2009
@CON
would you prefer the console with the better sales are the better games in 2008-2009.
December 17th, 2009
It’s interesting about the sales figures. Xbox360 outsold PS3 in the U.S. However, there is some speculation that the PS3 has outsold the Xbox360 in worldwide sales during the month.
December 17th, 2009
figures for today in Japan should be interesting.
December 17th, 2009
interesting point twilight.
I’m really psyched to see how the 3D utilization will work.
December 17th, 2009
Blu-ray 3D specifications finalized, PS3 is ready
http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/17/blu-ray-3d-specifications-finalized-your-ps3-is-ready/
December 17th, 2009
Nice.. I know for a fact my DLP can handle this. I wonder if current LCD can as well.
We saw with Wipout HD, GT5P and Motorstorm how Sony implemented into games that already came out.
This year will be friggin awesome.
Wow the disc will require 50% more for 3D. I guess DVD is pretty much out if this is also a requirement for games as well.
December 17th, 2009
PS3 is always right there with cutting edge technology. This is why I like the system so much. I don’t know of any other blu ray player that is going to be updatad to include this technologhy.
December 17th, 2009
correction:updated to include this technology. I hit wrong keys.
December 17th, 2009
will you need a special glasses or stuff are going to come out of the screen like its nobody’s business?
December 17th, 2009
special glasses and an IR transmitter for them plugged into the TV.
This technology is awesome. While I haven’t seen it live on a HDTV yet I have seen it years ago on the PC. I have to say.. it needs to be seen to be believed.
This contradicts all those people saying the PS3 is shit because there are $100 blu ray players at walmart (that won’t support this).
I guess one can say the PS3 is “future proofed”

The gimmick nobody really wants that just won’t pi$$ off.
Every decade since the 1950s this BS has popped up and every time it is proven to be an empty gimmick (often leaving a sense of nausea in many).
There are two 3D TV systems vying for attention this time around (always a great start, not) one requires the cheapo glasses and the other different more expensive glasses.
All ways round you can bet that besides a couple of gimmicky flops nothing much is going to happen.
Avatar (supposedly the movie stirring renewed interest) has disappointed many reviewers.
December 17th, 2009
I heard they are aim to project 1080p resolution to each “eye”
December 17th, 2009
“The gimmick nobody really wants that just won’t pi$$ off.”
because the 360 can’t even come close to implement a feature like this! (at no cost btw)
December 17th, 2009
“Avatar (supposedly the movie stirring renewed interest) has disappointed many reviewers”
just like your ODST and Ace Combat 6
December 17th, 2009
The exact response I expect from people that wont be able to enjoy this due to the 360′s limitations.
There’s been more 3D movies now than I ever remember and I’m 30+.
People are interested.
December 17th, 2009
HH if xbox was getting 3D and ps3 wasnt you would act like its the best thing to happen to gaming. so shut up you jealous turd.
December 17th, 2009
“The gimmick nobody really wants that just won’t pi$$ off”
funny, you said the same about bluray but yet you own a stand alone BD player.
even if its a gimmick its a better feature/update than LAST.FM, Twitter or Facebook.
December 17th, 2009
“Every decade since the 1950s this BS has popped up and every time it is proven to be an empty gimmick (often leaving a sense of nausea in many).”
You obviously haven’t been to a recent 3D movie.
It has come a long way and I can’t wait to see it come into the homes.
No more red/blue crap it is very clear and easy to watch. I have seen 3 3D movies and I will be watching Avatar when I get to Florida.
December 17th, 2009
You can wave your gimmick all you like in 2 years time we’ll all have long forgotten it – until it creep out from under it’s stone sometime in the next decade.
Roca
I know it’s hard for your tiny closed brain to work out but I can buy any of the tech that interests me, regardless of how long-term or otherwise it may turn out to be.
3D better than Last.FM, Twitter & Facebook?!
Yeah cos millions of existing users mean nothing in the face of your laughable hopes for a gimick which has flopped more times than Paul Gascoigne’s beer belly.
You are a funny little twerp.
December 17th, 2009
ncassie
Avatar was sh!te.
December 17th, 2009
If anything keeps me from Avatar it would be the 163 minutes run time. I get antsy.
December 17th, 2009
idiot…you guys get hyped up about a stupid feature that can be done a PS3 (via web browser) since day one. you can also do it on a PC, DS, PSP, mobile phones etc.
3D-capable BD player/gaming diviced vs a facebook, twitter and last.fm app?
sorry you have no argument. I know you are enjoying your BD player more than the Twitter app and i hope your BD player will be able to project in 3D
December 17th, 2009
“Avatar was sh!te”
I agree, the 360 avatar and the animated series is shit.
The movie comes out tomorrow though! (i dont think you have seen it yet) and its got a metacritic score of 83 out of 100 [unversal acclaim]
again you comments are made up and full of BS.
December 17th, 2009
how the fuk is 3D a gimmick HH? it hasnt been done properly b4 and now it is. yeah and 360 users hyping facebook etc. . LOL we hav all that since day one with the internet browser. back in the padded cell HH. . .
December 17th, 2009
Not true roca. Not sure about over there, but here they have been having advanced screenings since the 15th of Dec.
December 17th, 2009
I just got a 32Gig iPhone yesterday!
An early x-mas present.
December 17th, 2009
I don’t bother with reviews or anyone else’s opinions.
I have different tastes then other people so I will tell you how I like it in Jan when I get back.
December 17th, 2009
it comes out tomorrow in the US. but what I was trying to say is that he is calling it a shitty movie when the movie is barely even out and has a metacritic score of 83 out of 100 [unversal acclaim].
December 17th, 2009
Some Xbox users are just so bitter. I wonder why…
December 17th, 2009
Roca
Once again you talk through your a$$ as if you have a clue.
Fail again.
Avatar has been out on review in the UK this week. actually.
And yes it has been soundly panned as boring (far too long), ridiculously derivative and relying on a 3d effect which upset some viewers making them feel sick.
December 17th, 2009
Ha!
American reviews.
That says it all.
Look kiddies shiney shiney! Coooooooooo.
FFS, grow up.
December 17th, 2009
twilight
Nothing “bitter” about it, just been around long enough to know a load of b*llocks from the first couple of times around.
Anyone would think nobody had seen convincing 3D before the way some talk.
We have.
It’s still no substitute for substance – ie quality writing, acting and directing.
You can trust Hollywood to ignore all that and go for the glitzy empty BS approach.
It’s in their nature…..and they are targetting so much of their narrow and brain-dead output to late teen early 20s US males.
December 17th, 2009
“American reviews”
wtf does that mean? is that you new excuse? one review is better than others? c’mon dude you really are pathetic!
Twilight dont bother he is one of those bitter xbots
December 17th, 2009
I’d trust certain UK reviewers long before I’d trust some of those US magazine reviews.
Still, retreat behind your tragic jingoism if you like, I guess it helps you avoid what is actually being said.
December 17th, 2009
HH
can you say something without bill gates’s d!ck in your mouth? you really just seem to talk utter shite! how does ROCA not know what he is talking about? im sure you know everthing doh? *sarcasm
December 17th, 2009
you never fail to amaze me happy.
It’s shown that the movie has a 83% metacritic yet those reviews aren’t good enough.
If picking and choosing the reviews that please us are OK, we’d long ago accept the practice here on Blorge with games.
December 17th, 2009
Say what you want about Avatar but I think it looks fucking amazing! Waited 3 years for this film and James Cameron ain’t fucked up yet. I’m yet to read a bad review… IMAX this weekend
December 17th, 2009
IMAX 3D for me mother fucker
tickets printed and in my cupboard.
I’ve seen some bad reviews in terms of the characters are a little flat, but meh, it has a big robot with a knife – I’m sold.
December 17th, 2009
Oh and ::
“Avatar (supposedly the movie stirring renewed interest) has disappointed many reviewers.”
And has pleased many more according to rotten tomatoes
%83 fresh.
On top of that, depending out the outlet (I think movietickets.com and fandango released their figures) about %75 – %89 of ticket sales were for IMAX 3D.
Damn those 3D haters
December 17th, 2009
Oh and because I love to triple post…
There is currently a cleaner under my desk cleaning up the man-batter after I watched the IronMan 2 trailer a couple of times
War Machine baby
December 17th, 2009
If shallow cliché shiney shiney shouty loud obvious fighty simplistic nonsense is your thing I’m sure you’ll love it.
If an interesting story with depth, character developement, emotional maturity and any sense of intellectual challenge is your thing then sorry but from what I can see it’s just the latest in a long line of predictable Hollywood cr@p doing the same old same old with slightly newer bit of shiney shiney tacked on.
December 17th, 2009
…..oh and don’t get me wrong, I’ll watch it.
I might even buy it on Blu-ray to enjoy the audio track when it gets cheap enough……but I’ll still be able to recognise it for the cr@p it is.
Same as how come I bought ‘Independance Day’
(which I’ve just bought it for £4.99 = $8 US = $9 AUS), it’s also similar ludicrous garbage.
I don’t need every movie I watch to be especially ‘worthy’ but, having said that, I am not incapable of recognising worthless bubble-gum nonsense when I see it.
December 17th, 2009
“If shallow cliché shiney shiney shouty loud obvious fighty simplistic nonsense is your thing I’m sure you’ll love it”
Wait are we talking about Halo?
December 17th, 2009
Barnabee Jones
Sadly when it comes down to it more than a few fit that description.
December 17th, 2009
HH – So you’ve seen it then…, still, I suppose its ok its that you grill Roca for games he passes judgement on that he has never played
Anyways, go enjoy riding you 75 foot horse whilst eat fillet mignon, swedish moose cheese, & 1787 Chateau Lafite for sippin’.
Ill enjoy my fucking life watching shit explode and robots with big fucking knives.
December 17th, 2009
SW
Nope.
You’ve also got it totally a$$-about-backwards about what has been going on with Roca.
He (apparantly) can slam any and every Xbox game going despite never have seen or played them – he usually wheels out ‘his friend’ for cast-iron proof.
I have not in fact been bashing anything, I merely refuse to agree that U2 is the greatest looking video game ever.
There is a difference.
He can use whatever review or screenshot or video he can find to form an opinion but apparantly I’m not allowed to.
As for the movie Avatar, like most I am going by review here – and yes I have seen some poor reviews.
Trash has it’s place SW, of course it does, but that doesn’t mean it’s anything more than trash.
December 17th, 2009
Ummmmmm…., sorry to interrupt but isn’t this post about PS3?
You two(Happyhockum and SW) are now arguing about a movie(avatar).
December 17th, 2009
HH
so what do you think is the best looking game this gen? everyone says U2 but they must be wrong coz HH said so. . . oh and stop wearing your mams clothes when you think no one is home HH. .
December 17th, 2009
“You’ve also got it totally a$$-about-backwards about what has been going on with Roca.”
Thats because to be honest I skip most you the banter between the various arguing parties
So you got me there
As for Avatar, as I said, has more positive than negative. I can negative Dark Knight reviews if I really want (not that reviews really matter I suppose).
Besides, Armond White gave it a rotten review, which means its fucking awesome (see his RT profile, he likes to trash good movies
)
December 17th, 2009
*most of
December 17th, 2009
I don’t normally listen to reviews for movies. A lot of those ‘Oscar Nominated’ movies bore the living crap out of me, however they get high ratings on RT. Frost/Nixon, The Queen, The Reader, Rachel Getting Married etc, frigging snooze fest. The only time the Oscar mob got it right was with Lord Of The Rings.
Even movies that get panned by critics end up being tits.
December 17th, 2009
@ the troll,
“I agree, the 360 avatar and the animated series is shit.”
The 360 avatar is shit eh? Compared to what? The PS3 avatar where every 4th dude in Home is wearing the same shit as you? The 360 Avatar has a heap of free customisation options, a lot more than the PS3 Avatar. So go eat a bag of shit.
December 17th, 2009
Xbox avatar screams useless and pure %100 GAY.
December 17th, 2009
well the 360 avatar is a rip off of the nintendo mii’s. . microsoft running out of ideas already? hmmm
December 17th, 2009
HH says anything just to not give credit to the PS3 and its 3D capabilities.
“Avatar is shit” – HH
December 17th, 2009
exactly ROCA he is just another jealous xbot
December 17th, 2009
Doesn’t the 360 version have 3D also? (HDMI Equiped machines). I am sure it does.
December 17th, 2009
Harry
Yeah the 360 has 3D games coming as well. Ubisoft has one that is working since last year. Don’t know when we will see it though.
December 17th, 2009
“animated series is shit”
Then its a good job the film is not related in any way to the animated series then
December 17th, 2009
can anyone see my comments?
December 18th, 2009
harry & CAD
Don’t expect consistency from the PS3 trolls.
I couldn’t give a flying one whether Xbox is also getting 3d stuff.
Like I said, it’s the next 3 – 6mths fad.
It might get stretched out a little by some of the new TVs coming (and yes, you need a brand new TV regardless of whether most Blu-ray players can handle it, and they can).
Nevertheless, think about it.
A huge segment of the population wears glasses.
It’s straight away a half-a$$ed balls up for them.
It just won’t fly with the wider public, they have yet to go HD as it is – and repeated surveys show that those with HD sets resolutely seem to refuse to actually ‘feed’ them much HD content – nevermind the studios trying to drive something else at them.
December 18th, 2009
xbox is so shit
December 18th, 2009
I read this on IGN. It’s quite funny.
Dear Sony,
What the hell, man?!
Three years ago, the PlayStation 3 burst on to the market. It had a number of fun games, but it also had a number of problems such as a bloated price tag, a laughable online storefront, a rumble-less controller, and a few other foibles. In the more than 2,000 days since the system launched, you’ve addressed a number of those complaints and put out some amazing games – the two Uncharteds, the two Resistances, Infamous, and so on. However, you’ve ignored one complaint day after day.
Where the eff are the avatars?
Yup… I want to be a power outlet…
I know there are bigger concerns – you’re in third place in the console wars, Uncharted 2 killed this year, and God of War III is about to come out – but the fact that you’re gaining so many new players with the price drop/Slim and you’re presenting them with one of the worst selections of avatars in the history of gaming is downright disgraceful. Every time I see one of your representatives, I drone on about this. When I interview one of your important peeps, I bring this up. But everyone seems to think I’m joking or something.
I’m not joking. You’re avatar system is horrible. Fix it.
Apparently, I need to pull the giant magnifying glass that is in the Internet over here and show you how awful the selection is. You have 223 avatars that PSN users can select to represent themselves online, and the overwhelming majority of these are just clipart images that have no relation to your games – a cow, a hippo statue, a generic 8-bit spaceship. The game-related avatars are limited and haven’t been updated in years. You have a bunch of characters from the Hot Shots franchise, three people from Haze, two representatives from Crash Bandicoot, and four Monkey Island folks.
These numbers are even more preposterous when we talk about avatars for games people WANT to play. There five Ratchet and Clank-themed avatars, but they’re all from the 2007 game. There are two Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune avatars, but they’re the same photo of Nathan Drake from two different zoom levels. There’s one disembodied head of Kratos, one image of Nathan Hale from Resistance, and one Helghast from Killzone.
Are you kidding me? This is how you represent your best games? Haze has more avatars than God of War? Where are the rest of the icons? Where’s Patapon? The Last Guy? PixelJunk Monsters? PixelJunk Shooter?
For the love of all that is holy, there are Super Rub-a-Dub avatars on here. Super Rub-a-Dub scores an avatar but Infamous doesn’t?
What’s all the more mind-boggling about this is how your main competitor – the Xbox 360 – trounces you when it comes to online representation and they’re getting people to pay for it. I can sign on to my 360 right now and buy Superman icons, Mizzou icons, and pretty much anything else I can think of to represent me online. It’s all there, just waiting for my money. Now, you added the option for premium avatars, but as of this writing, you’ve added zero premium avatars. What’s the hold up? These are tiny images that require little work. If you’ll buy them off of me, I’ll sit down on Sunday and whip you up 100 or so of these things in Photoshop.
Doubling back to the 360 letting me feel like my gamertag matters, why haven’t you figured out a way to let me use the PlayStation Eye to take a photo to represent me on the PlayStation Network? The Xbox camera can be used in this manner, and you’d think you’d want people buying the PlayStation Eye seeing as how – currently – only SingStar really uses the thing in any interesting way.
Three black cats? Get it together, Sony.
Sigh. I just don’t know what to tell you, Sony. I’ve written about how much I love Trophies, how much I love the PlayStation community, and how much I like playing my PS3 over the other consoles. Why do you ignore my simplest request? Why do you continue to pump money into niche projects such as PlayStation Home and giving us the ability to change our PSN profile color while ignoring an easy thing that would satisfy so many gamers?
I’m not kidding. You’re really pissing me off.
XOXO.
Greg
December 18th, 2009
That is pretty funny. speaking for myself… Once I selected my Clank Avatar I have yet to think about it again.
December 18th, 2009
hey CAD. you should post what this guys opinions are between achievements and trophies. Thats also quite funny.

I for one am pretty excited. Whether it turns niche or not, adding additional functionality is never a bad thing, despite what some people here say.
December 18th, 2009
this is hilarious.
making a big deal about a “profile picture” lol. they are not even Avatars.
I would be more concern about paying MS for online play and netflix access
December 18th, 2009
360 cannot do 3D. It has HDMI1.2 (a obsolete version), and the console does not have the grunt to output 2x 1080P pictures at the same time.
Sorry, for 3D, you need:
A powerful console.
Lots of storage.
XBox has neither of these.
December 18th, 2009
“3D Xbox 360 games up and running at Ubisoft
James Cameron, director of hit movies Aliens, Terminator and Titanic, has revealed that Ubisoft has a 3D version of forthcoming title Avatar up and running on Xbox 360 consoles, reports Cnet.”
I guess it is safe to say that this did not happen but the key statement is that it was up and running on a Xbox 360.
December 18th, 2009
what the hell happened to it then?
I would guess the space requirements are going to be an issue with DVD vs Blu ray for something like this. Time will tell.
I could see Natal implementing some 3D games that would be interesting.
Maybe the first 3D game can come out on the 360 so everyone can say Sony jumped on the bandwagon again
December 18th, 2009
OK I take that back Avatar is in 3D on 360, PS3 and PC. Apparently you need a 3D TV, HDMI 1080P, and 3D Glasses. So what is the point of a 3D TV if you still need glasses?
December 18th, 2009
phranctoast
You’re not seriously trying to use the paid optimists projections are you?
Shall I post some of their (now laughable) BS about where Blu-ray was supposed to be – in 2008!
St0rmBr1nger/Roca/Ivan
Go on then, describe the technical limitations of HDMI 1.2a in relation to carrying a 3D HD video signal.
I can’t wait.
Storage has nothing to do with it either.
Xbox uses compression (a DVD 9 = 8.5gb game on Xbox was 13gb on PS3) and so 2 x DVD9 is a hell of a lot of storage – and digital download removes all constraints.
This is especially so as it is obvious that the 120gb Elite is, in effect, to be the new Pro and the 250gb the new Elite.
We’re also seeing multi-disc releases with a clear seperation from the hard drive-less Arcade.
You’re also talking b*llocks if you’re trying to claim the Xboxes 3 core (each with 2 threads) CPU isn’t powerful enough to run 2 HD images.
A pretty low end dual core can handle HD these days.
Like CAD said, it’s been done already.
My guess is that they don’t want to release at all becasue it’ll not sell especially well or work with most existing HD TVs.
The new 3D tech requires a new TV.
Your PS3 (like most stand-alone Blu-ray players) can play it but your existing HD TV can’t do anything with it.
The old 3D tech just looks odd & cr@p.
December 18th, 2009
It seemed very optimistic.
Of course its a worldwide estimate and people may be buying 3d ready TV’s without knowing it.
We can’t knock the HD TV revolution. Right now it would be difficult for me to find a TV in most places that aren’t in HD.
Are you sure that older Blu ray players can handle this. From the article Roca posted it appeared a new BRD player would also be necessary.

You’re right about HD TVs, they have been the majority set sold in much of the ‘west’ for over a year now.
I’ve seen contradictory info as regards their total market penetration.
Last year they were at about 33% of all sets in US homes and about 20% in the UK with EU Europe trailing around 17%.
Recently I’ve seen a claim that they are now in the majority in UK homes but I doubt that (I suspect it was a confusion between the majority of new TV sets sold, not the majority of total TV sets out there).
Nevertheless repeated surveys in the US & UK (& Europe is probably little different) show that there is still a problem getting people to ‘feed’ their sets HD material.
You might be right about the Blu-ray player needing to change, it looks like it’s unclear.
There’s talk of backwards compatability with all existing Blu-ray players but they could just be referring to regular playback.
It looks like the spec has been finalised by the BDA but how that fits in with the competing designs remains to be seen.
I do know that the synchronized shutter glasses are not part of current TV’s and we will need a new TV to use them.
Most TV’s currently on sale cannot accept the 120Hz or 240Hz input, current 120Hz and 240Hz TV’s actually ‘cheat’ (sort of), they only double or quadruple the 60Hz input.
Still, this is just what Blu-ray needs.
Not.
All existing players, except the PS3, are obsolete.
What a crazy way to destroy confidence in a fledgling market, and for what?
A questionable gimmick, I reckon.
I do not see 3D taking off this time or any time (it’s irrelevant to cinema and can be distracting & intrusive) but we will see.
December 18th, 2009
You were the one telling me that HDTV penetration increased in the UK because of the new digital standard right? People buying a new TV since they had to go digital anyway and that most people bought a HDTV….?
As for 3D
It more than likely will be a niche market. I hope it takes off and is supported better than the eye toy. It’s odd that my new TV supports this and type wise it’s older tech than what out there now (DLP vs LCD and LED)
One will have to see if other existing players can handle it via firmware upgrade.

Just give up. The bootleg 3D you can get now os not tje same as the one Sony is aiming At. 1080p on both eye is not the same as the using the red n nlue glasses
December 18th, 2009
No where near the red and blue 3D.

…..and just were did I say that it was the same, huh?
While you’re at it go ahead & explain how a trolling f*ckwit like yourself draws that conclusion that I was talking about “red n nlue glasses” when I mentioned “synchronized shutter glasses” in my post…..unless you were just trolling?
Feel free to describe how the new 3D is meant to work with –
“According to the Vision Council of America, approximately 75% of adults use some sort of vision correction.
About 64% of them wear eyeglasses, and about 11% wear contact lenses, either exclusively, or with glasses.
Over half of all women and about 42% of men wear glasses”
h**p://www.glassescrafter.com/information/percentage-population-wears-glasses.html
I doubt the USA is anything particularly remarkable here so if the %’s hold good for the rest of the developed world (at least) how cr@p is this 3D & those shuttered specs going to be for more than half of adult women and almost half of adult men?
You fanboys might drool over everything Sony does without the slightest regard to the practicalities but unfortunately for your ‘vision’ those minor details do impact on take-up and usage.
December 18th, 2009
ncassie
You can join that w@nker in explaining how you get anything to do with “red and blue 3D” from what was being discussed.
Or justy fess up that you joined in the trolling.
December 18th, 2009
you said:
“Your PS3 (like most stand-alone Blu-ray players) can play it but your existing HD TV can’t do anything with it.”
well I have watched many 3D bluray films with red&blue glasses on my old LCD 60Hz HDTV. but What Sony is aiming at it is not possible on most BD and not all TV can output that type of quality.
they already said it takes 50% more for BD movies…which means DVD is out of the question for both Gaming and HD Movies
December 18th, 2009
Roca
I mentioned right at the start that most if not all HD TVs can’t deal with a ‘true’ 120/240Hz image.
Plainly I wasn’t talking about (in your gibberish) “red n nlue glassesâ€.
I had “red n nlue glasses†3D on my old SD PAL sets, FFS you trolling moron.
Clearly I was talking about “synchronized shutter glassesâ€
(the hint you could have picked up on is that I specifically mentioned them in my writing, idiot).
I also talked about how just over 1/2 women and almost 1/2 of men wear glasses.
Well done for managing to entirely avoid the point there.
December 18th, 2009
BD/DVD is just the container.
If 1 DVD isn’t enough use 2 or 3 or 4.
Who cares.
Download if necessary.
Always round it’s a gimmick that will amuse for a few minutes before it is passed by for something not all about an effect.
December 18th, 2009
I wear glasses and I’ve been to 3d movies in the past. Plan on seeing avatar as well. My secret. Put them over your glasses. Wow. It’s ingenious.
I’m sure the specifies stats of people wearing glasses is
well known and I’m sure larger fitted glasses
will be available as well.
December 18th, 2009
phranctoast
Yes, wearing 2 sets of glasses at once.
That’s going to be popular and widely accepted.
Not.
December 18th, 2009
Should I call you Wayne or Garth? Lol.
In a movie I’m trying to score with rhe fashion police. Lol. If it’s that much of an issue contacts are a solution.
Just admit your you’re making a mountain out of a mole hill.
December 18th, 2009
Not tryin to score. Lol
December 18th, 2009
phranctoast
I think you’ll find mountains and molehills is part of the scenery around here.
I’m not saying it can’t be gotten around as you suggest, I just have serious doubts anything with any sort of specs is ever going to be widely accepted.
Throw in shuttering specs that have batteries (and therefore cost) and the disaster just snowballs.
The part that has yet to be addressed in this is that it is often distracting and intrusive.
It can also make people feel nausea.
You just know Hollywood will not be able to help themselves, the effect will be the thing 999 times out of 1000 (at least).
December 18th, 2009
happy just wont give up.
how many excuses more your going to come out with”
avatar is shit, most american use glasses (wow the killer)
come on dude. the fact of the matter is that Sony is going to put put 3D (in HD) for gaming and movies and your old 360 is going to get left behind
stop tryuing to pretend that you know more that the ppl who gets paid to do this shit and stop making anymore excuses your jealousy is going over your head.
December 18th, 2009
“Just admit your you’re making a mountain out of a mole hill.”
lmaoo…you know he is going to stay on denial for as long as he is breathing.
after all he still havent admit that U2 is the best looking game right now. this guy is a comedian, gotta give him props for that

More of your fanboy b*llocks.
You have no clue what is or is not going to happen with 3D, Xbox or PS3 for that matter.
You have no idea how many movies will follow Avatar, nor what they will be like.
Even with Avatar with its reputed $300 – $500 million spent of course the CGI looks good…..is anyone really supposed to be surprised by that?
The effect still is no substitute for content which is derivitive and well-worn.
(and they won’t all have that sort of budget)
You can have no idea whether or not 3D will really take off – at least I can point to several loud and resounding ‘yawn’s as its track record over the last almost 60yrs
(thought 3D movies actually pre-date that by some margin) .
All you’re doing is your usual stunt of wailing some tedious Sony/PS3 PR.
I prefer to wait & see but be informed by the track-record.
You prefer PR puff, so long as it is from the ‘side’ you like.
December 18th, 2009
“You have no clue what is or is not going to happen with 3D, Xbox or PS3 for that matter.”
just like you have no clue what will happen to Bluray, PS Wand, 3D gaming, Natal or Halo reach.
but you already claimed BD will die in 5 years (as of 08), you claimed Natal will destroy the PS wand, you claimed Halo Reach Will be the Best Looking game in 2010..and you already claimed 3D game a failure and you also said Avata the Movie was shit
come on dude…at least follow your own advice. maybe then ppl are going to start taking you seriously
December 18th, 2009
Roca
Try not to be a complete moron all your life.
I did not say Blu-ray would last 5yrs as a mainstream video format, a senior guy at Samsung said so.
I “claimed” nothing of the sort about the wand v Natal.
I have zero interest in the wand and could care less.
I expect 3D to fail, again.
Because it has failed umteen times already.
It has a track-record of repeated failure.
Avatar is cr@p.
The plot is undeniably derivative formulaic simplistic cobblers.
The one time you’ve been accurately able to say I was purely giving my own opinion I was totally clear that that was all it was.
In my opinion based on what I’ve seen & read so far I fully expect Halo Reach to be either the best looking game of 2010 or the equal of the best looking game…..quite clearly that is an opinion and I have not presented it as anything other than that.
There’s a world of difference between your pathetic fanboy pronouncements and my comments which are clearly based on either credible quote, an existing history or when I am plain about offering my own opinion.
…..oh, and if the arbiter of being taken seriously is you (arrogant, much?) then go f*ck yourself fanboy.
December 19th, 2009
Oh cool, you’ve seen it now happy
Don’t spoil it for me!
December 19th, 2009
Well just seen Avatar… Wasn’t as mind blowing as I had hoped but it was decent. James Cameron making up this world and people is just awesome. It takes alot of cash and balls for a director to make a movie like this and I hope it makes alot of money and gets the support it deserves. So for those of you sitting on the fence or waiting for the BR/DVD to rent it, I say just go to the movies and watch it, hell take your family with you. A movie this big in scope shines in a theater. I already have a bootlegged copy but it wasn’t the same as watching it on the big screen, esp the 3D parts. So get off your lazy balls and go to the movies for this one so they will make more movies like this.
December 20th, 2009
When the first mech. suit walked past the camera in 3D I jizzed in my pants.
Movie premise was good but a smidge predictable. Movie itself was good and when the big carrier went down and exploded the boom from the IMAX sub was damn cool
December 20th, 2009
avatar is one of the best films ive ever seen. im going to watch it again tonite lol
December 20th, 2009
SW
So, was I so far out?
Do you really think “derivative formulaic simplistic cobblers” was harsh or close to the mark?
Dances with Wolves in space, with a hint of Last Samuria?
Flavoured with some current war on terror catch-phrase b*llocks and a levening of eco-green ideas?
As I said the CGI was good (although not in all places, there were some early scenes when he is running over the tree boughs high up that looked very muddy) but at $300 – $500 million you kind of expect that.
Here’s an interesting experiment (I did this), go and watch it on a non 3D cinema.
You’ll see what I mean about the steady punctuation of ‘wow’ moments (for some reason they are more obvious on the 2D showing).
Tell me that’s not intrusive, distracting and a clear instance showing where the effect is becoming the point of the scene.

You never did mention that new HD TV everyone is going to need.
How come?
You went as far as posting up the BDA announcement so why leave out the biggest and most costly piece of the puzzle?
Were you ignorant of the need for a brand new HD TV?
Or were you preferring not to mention it & mislead people?
Which was it, shill?
