Japan video game sales numbers – 12/7 to 12/13
The Japanese sales numbers are finally out and it looks like just about all of platforms across the board jumped significantly this past week. It seems like the video game industry is going strong in the land of the rising sun. Take the jump for the numbers.
We report Japanese video game sales numbers from time to time but not on a regular basis like the NPD numbers for the US. I suppose there really isn’t too much drama in Japan as there is in the U.S., with the Xbox 360 and the PS3 fighting for the number two spot.
However, its hard to forget that Japan still houses the second largest video game market in the world after the US within a country. There isn’t a single European/Atlantic/Eurasian territory that can hold a candle to Japan as far as game dollars spent.

Its interesting to see that the PSP Go is the only platform to take a nose dive in Japan. Also, the Xbox 360 jumped by 100 percent from 5k to 10k for that week.
The Wii and PS3 received a nice boost as well. The Wii sold 136k and the PS3 moved 75k in one week, which is pretty impressive. I wonder what the PS3 numbers will look like for last week, with the release of Final Fantasy XIII. It looks like we will just have to wait till next week to find out.

Seeing that lonely red, downward arrow next to the PSP Go made me laugh. The Go is a piece of crap and a joke. It’s not even worth buying. Sony is just trying to make as much money as they can from people and it’s ridiculas. Remove the UMD drive and charge about $100 more. It’s not even worth it.
I have a launch day PSP-1000 and it still works perfectly. I have owned maybe 10 games total. The PSP could use a stronger library of games but releasing a newer PSP version and removing the ability to play the entire library of UMD games really doesn’t sit well with me and alot of other gamers. Sony is just trying to fight the used game market and stores like Gamestop that deal in used games. Sony strongly feels that they are not making as much money as they could be because of Gamestop, so if they remove the UMD drive then you remove the ability to buy/sell used games.
How long before they decide to do this with the PS3?

The PSP Go is awesome only if you a first time PSP owner i own 6 PSP. And the PSP has amazing exclusives. PSP is fantastic.

My question actually makes perfect sense when you think about it. Some games on PS3 didn’t post sales as strong as Sony expected. But ultimately how many times has a game like Killzone 2 been traded in and resold at a place like Gamestop? If Sony could stop that from happening then they think it would increase sales numbers and their profits. You can’t trade in or sell DLC so if you want something you would have to buy it brand new, and from them since they would be sole distributer.
As for the 100TB HDD comment.. well not every game on PS3 takes up a large % of the space on a bluray disc (Not every game is MGS4).

both of you are right in a way. download only will prevent games from ending up in a retail’s store “used section” but like Ivan said, download only for PS3 mean you will need a HUGE amount of memory for your disc-based games.
it’s hard to manage your HDD space with PSN games alone. GoW collection used 32GB and most PS3 games are well over 10GBs

My best friend bought me a Wii in the beginning of July 08. We stopped playing it in August, so we only used it for a month. Wii sucks for any hardcore gamer, but is obviously more towards younger kids and family style gaming.
The Metroid Prime Trilogy, and Legend of Zelda games are great but aside from that there is little else for a hardcore gamer to own a Wii.
Although I can say that No more heros is an interesting game and at least worth a rental. first time I ever heard “fuck” in a nintendo game

It actually has some ‘motion’ control.
Some of the levels use tilt control for platforms and stuff. You also shake the wiimote to spin I think. I’ve been playing it here and there, I don’t think its anything special tho, typical ‘lets try to appease long time nintendo fans by rehashing ANOTHER old title!’ effort from the big N.

The new Metroid looks pretty cool.
I haven’t heard a peep about the new Final Fantasy for Wii, and that’s releasing on the 26th. Not sure if that’s a sign of the games quality or if it’s just getting over looked.
I thought it looked half decent from the screens and trailers.

Actually I looked it up… Famitsue gave it a 30/40 and it sold pretty poorly in Japan.
I still don’t get the 26th release date. That’s just like setting it out there to die. If they released it a few weeks earlier it would have at least sold.

I remember playing the FF Crystal chronicles on Gamecube. It wasn’t so bad if you played with multiple people. Having to carry around a bucket was pretty stupid though.

I usually played with my niece and nephew. We never beat it though. Just didn’t have the time, since I worked alot and they went to school. I was thinking of maybe getting back into it with them and adding in my best friend.
In single player mode you at least were accompanied by a moogle who would carry the bucket for you alittle bit. But he whined about carrying it from time to time and you had to carry it for alittle. Bucket juggling really became monotonous either way.
I did enjoy playing it though and wouldn’t mind checking out the sequal. I think it’s called Echoes of time. I heard that at least in that one you don’t have to carry a friggin bucket.

Hey, I finally got myself a decent surround sound system last night. It’s 5.1, cost a LOT, sounds awesome, and makes my 58″ TV look small. The center speaker is bigger than my whole old system (which had 2 tiny speakers and a baby-amp).

I’m sorry roca, but I honestly feel they are both equally impressive. I see Sony has a longer list, but this doesn’t equate to “more impressive” for me. I am interested in about the same number of games on it as what is slated for 360 in the same year so far. I can see you place a lot of importance on one being somehow “better” than the other… I think it’s safe to say I just do not think the same as you, and I do not believe “one has to be better than the other”. Either one has enough games being released for it to keep a gamer busy for the entire year.

Surprisingly the PS3 exclusive lineup made Capcom pushed back Dead Rising, Super Street Fighter 4 and Lost Planet to “sometime” between April 1st and early 2011
and God of War made all other God of War Clones games to push up thier release so the game can come out before GoW3. and now we are stuck with a bunch of hack n slash game in a short period of time

Sorry, I’m sure a lot of gamers are really looking forward to EyePet, ModNation Racers, Ape Escape, Gem, rereleases of games that have already come out on 360, MMO’s, sports games (like MLB), games where you tie your tie or have puppy dog chicken monsters in them, and racers, I’m just not one of them. I may check a few of those out if they get rave reviews, but they are just not high on my anticipation list right now. I am looking forward to some of the few that are left though, which, to me at least, wind up being equally impressive. Some people just like lists… to each his own.

The everysingle gaming website have been saying that no one has a better lineup in 2010 than the PS3.
but of course. Carlb doest like sports game so MLB 10 The show doesnt count as a quality game (even though it’s the best baseball game franchise right now). CarlB doesnt like EyePet but Natal seems more interesting to him (which is basically the same thing), CarlB doesnt like ModNation Racers because the 360 cant make a game like this, the other similar game to ModNation Racers are LBP (2nd highest rated exclusive this gen) and Mario Kart (best Go Kart game ever) but for Carlb ther are not quality games because their are not 360 games.

That sure is a lot of websites roca, but I tend to think for myself instead of letting random websites do it for me, as I know my own individual game preferences best (as explained above). You may like every single genre and type of game out there, I do not, sorry.

Now where did I say it “doesn’t count as a quality game?” I just said I don’t like sports games in general and I don’t follow baseball. I think the last “sports” game (if you can call it that) I really enjoyed was SSX, which was a while ago. Next year’s sports games are not “impressive” to me, they are just the next years iteration in the same sport’s games.

I’m not really that into Natal either, but I am intrigued about it being a replacement for my remote control (especially voice and gesture control) and maybe the possibility of it having a few in game controls in different games (one of the recent Mass Effect 2 trailers I saw recently got me to thinking about these lately). Nothing big there and I didn’t even mention it here. I didn’t see any flying monkeys either.

Like I’ve said before, I don’t prefer or get highly excited about racing games in general either. I saw JoyRide for 360 from E3, but it was immediately forgettable to me, as is Modnation Racers. It’s not to say both of these can’t be “quality” games, it’s just that I am not that into racing games (to illustrate this point, I haven’t played any of the Forza’s either btw).

Yes, and Forza 3 is the highest rated racing game this gen… and Halo 3 is a top rated exclusive shooter (just one point below LBP) this gen but I haven’t played these (let alone KZ2) either because I am not that big on racers/shooters. LBP is a platformer, another genre I am not big into. Again, I’m sure these are fine games for their genres, just not ones I particularly look forward to. People loved MGS4, I don’t, and I thought Infamous, God of War collection, and UC1&2 were far more enjoyable to me. I can understand if you feel differently.
The point is we are individuals roca, and I can respect your opinions about what you like/dislike or feel is “impressive”. It’s obvious you think LBP is one of the greatest games on the planet (as evidenced by your icon and the way you have talked about it). That’s fine. I just enjoy and look forward more to games like FFXIII and Bayonetta instead. For the record, I don’t like Mario Kart either, even though it may be “the best Go Kart game ever”. Just because I don’t like it doesn’t mean I don’t think it can be the best in it’s genre/niche, let alone “quality”.

What do you mean, “they speak for themselves”? They can be crappy/quality and be in their own genre as well as have MMO games that fall into different genres (shooter, rpg, adventure, etc.). I see nothing there that interests me. FFXIV is still being considered for XBox 360 btw, but regardless if it is multiplatform or not, I’m still not sure I want to play MMO’s as I’ve seen too many people go down that consuming path. I get drawn in enough with 50-100+ hour games like Dragon’s Age, I can only imagine how bad I would be with one that never ends. This is why I haven’t played Everquest or WoW in the past when I was into PC gaming, and instead stuck with Baldur’s Gate and Elder Scrolls. Again, I never said these games “are not valid for a quality lineup”, it’s just that certain genre games don’t appeal to me as much or are not as “impressive” to me.

As for Bayonetta, I’ll give it a month for them to fix some issues via patch before picking it up.
Darksiders is said to be a 16 hour game. Which means it will probably take me a bit to finish it.
The only thing I don’t like about the Bayonetta review is the story. That right there is where God of War shines and would get the nod from me.
Of course thats simply just going by the reviews and not me playing it.
Anyone else more impressed graphically with GOW collection over Bayonetta?

Not yet, just the Bayonetta demo on 360.. it reminds me a lot of Otagi 1&2 (Xbox) more than DMC. I’ll try and give the DI demo a shot today.

The only thing on the 360 for 2010 that interests me is Alan Wake. The concept sounds great and I like how they plan on breaking up the levels like episodes. It could be a total bomb for all I know though. While Remedy is behind it, that means squat as Haze came from Free Radical and they were responsible for one of the Best FPS franchises Timesplitters.

Obviously played the PS3 version. I found the crisp super smooth anti aliased GOW collection more eye pleasing (minus the cutscenes)
The same could be said about GOW3 demo. Look at the difference between the green chests. Obviously in many respects the GOW 3 is so much more graphically impressive but what can I say. I love the clean look.

Joking aside, I appreciate what the medieval setting can bring to the experience, vice just the greek mythological one.
Almost all “genres” started with a game, and each genre has developed (i.e. games “cloned” certain aspects of previous games) over time to have sub genres. God of War is still one of the best games in my mind, I’m just happy to see more of it showing up in other games, and deservedly so.

Considering that a huge chunk of the Wii, DSi, PSP, 360 or even the PS2 hardwares sales are being pushed by games piracy all over the world, the PS3 is realatively not doing bad.
As of now PS3 console is being pushed by genuine games which is good and bad depending on who is looking at it.
Not that I am in favor of piracy but I know somehow Nitendo and Microsoft is enjoying this bitter-sweet reality.
If PS3 can surpass the 360 in hardware sales with out blu-ray piracy then that is shall make landmark history more notable than the Wii.
We will see a new chapter in the video game console wars when the tide goes to Sony’s favor when Capt. Jack Sparrow finally sells his own version of Blu-ray games.
