Around the Web: surprising Game of the Year awards
With the year nearing the end, many game sites are starting to roll out the awards for the best of the best games this year. Some of the winners were surprising and interesting at the same time.
It really is difficult to look back at this year’s incredible catalog of games and analyze the best of the best in each category let alone the best game of the year. Just browsing around the Web, it looks like many sites have started rolling out the winners of each category.
There were some interesting ones that were surprising and somewhat unexpected. Gamespot is ahead of the pack with the most number of awards out already so just looking through their winners it seems like the usual suspects are there with Uncharted 2 winning best technical graphics and voice acting. Left 4 Dead 2 received the best co-op mode award as expected.
Killzone 2 took home the best sound design and competitive multiplayer award. This one was really surprising as it went up against the likes of COD: MW2. The editors did make a strong case about its innovative seamless mode system and leveling mechanism. Interestingly, inFAMOUS took home the award for best original IP. In contrast, Gametrailers gave the best original IP to Demon’s Souls.
Note that there are only a few categories available at this time. Most sites should have their full list of categories and winners by the end of this week.

I can see why inFAMOUS would get some awards. I haven’t played the actual game, only the demo, but it is definately an awsome game.
Demon’s Souls definately deserves some awards too. I personally give it the “Thank you for kicking my ass. Can I please have some more?” award. Wow that game is frickin tough!

Yeah no question, Demon’s Souls was the best new IP. It’s also the IP I most want to see a sequel from.
Most over rated games: COD 25(or whatever they are up to now) & Super Mario

Atlas – who published the game in NA – doesn’t have the resources to publish in EU. I would maybe wait, you might be able to import a cheap used copy in a few months. That shouldn’t be too expensive.

The game that I would like to see get more credit is Batman Arkham Asylum. This game was lots of fun.

I’m glad that KZ2 got an award. It’s graphics were overshadowed by Uncharted 2, and everything else forgotten since it was released early in the year and the craze is over. However, I’m not afraid to say that I didn’t get into its multiplayer. I played quite a few matches and finished top 3 in nearly every one, but I just stopped at one point. The campaign is pretty great though, and while the characters and story are a pile of steaming panda bullocks like every other FPS, the atmosphere is great and, laugh at me if you want, it is without a doubt the most realistic game I’ve ever played. If there is a Helgan, and I’m on there carrying and shooting a huge beefy gun, THAT is what it would feel like.
I’m still working on my inFAMOUS plat, but it is definitely a great game. Sometimes it can get repetitive (as in 20 different missions where all you do is climb a building and disable surveillance devices), and exploring the city isn’t all that fun. Also, the city looks exactly the same throughout (but with a great design and atmosphere). I’m glad that I didn’t look up spoilers, because the ending really surprised and pleased me. Needless to say, I love the game, and I can’t wait for the sequel (as long as there isn’t stupid blast shards…)
Is it just me, or did Uncharted 2 basically win IGN’s GOTY? I know they didn’t give out the actual award yet (I’m not sure if they will or not), but Assassin’s Creed 2 won Xbox GOTY, but Uncharted 2 beat it for PS3 GOTY. I heard that the game is pretty well the same between the 2 platforms, and Uncharted 2 beats it in graphics and smoothness anyways, so that argument is void. Good to see that the game is getting recognition.
I’m glad that IGN gave AC2 the 360 GOTY because it is such a great sequel. On the other hand, MW2 is still the COD4 formula with new guns, perks, and a (perhaps worse) campaign. Which means, while it’s still a great game, it didn’t make any huge innovations. I guess that COD4 deserved a sequel, but they should be done with MW after this. And WW2. If they are such a great developer, they should do the same thing that the first and fourth COD did: top and obliterate any competition.

Oh sheesh you can tell I haven’t gotten too far in Demon’s Souls or even played in over a month. I forgot about the changing tendencies of the different worlds in game.
I bought it on release date and I had beaten the Phalanx but I haven’t made much progress since then.

Well 1-2 can be tough at first. Pro Tip: Kill the Dragon by climbing on top of the first tower and shooting him with a bow and arrow. Bring like 300 arrows.
Tower Knight beat me quite a few times. If you want to melee him attack his ankles. When he falls attack his head. It might take a few tries to get it right.
If you want do do it the wimpy way: attack him from the top with magic.
But back to your original question… world tendency is effected by your actions. Certain actions shift it towards good/light – making enemies weaker. Other actions (dying in body form) do the opposite.

Yeah I hear you. There was high demand here in the states also, but they wouldn’t publish it here either.
Yes – I guess they could, but they probably won’t. I’m guessing they have their priorities set on larger titles like GT5, GoW III, etc

Liquid is right SCEJ co-developed the game and SCEJ published the game in Japan…I believed Demon’s Souls is a Sony IP btw

I don’t know about what sort of deal is in place with Atlas, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Sony has a bigger role in the sequel.
It sold better then Ratchet in NA. So if they invested some more money into the game and marketed it properly, it could easily break 2 million in lifetime sales.

MW2 not even getting the GOTY nomination on Gamespot pretty much spells it out that the overall GOTY award will go to Uncharted 2. According to their scoring system U2 is at the top.
It’s what most of us knew who played both games anyway……….

Indeed. I’m actually really getting into U2s multiplayer, it is great. It’s 3rd person and climbing aspects are perfect, and the grenades are extremely handy. Takes quite a few bullets to kill a guy, though. If both people are behind cover, it is nearly impossible for one to kill the other unless they charge.
My KD/R is maybe 1.5. I have a few good matches today, a 20-5 was probably my best.
What I DO hate are the glitchers. I ran into a guy today who went under the Plaza using a glitch, and shot everyone through the walls. I got some footage of it. He was lvl IX (59), but had extremely crappy aim and missed people 10 feet away with a FAL. I ended up with a better score than him FFS. I glitch games plenty, but NEVER online, and NEVER to unfairly beat it. Let’s just say I find hiding under a multiplayer map and picking people off unfairly very unsatisfying.

On the Japanese Amazon store… FF XIII has a 3 star rating right now. Meanwhile Uncharted 2 is a fraction away from 5 stars… not a good sign for FFXIII

I played it through the beta but been held up with other games lately and have yet to really attack it in the full game. Loved the MP aspect and it totally holds it’s own given that many people believe it was such a “add on” and dismissed as that.
Anyone see the Bioshock 2 MP stuff at Gametrailers? Looks good but I feel it will have the same effect. As long as they don’t cheese out on the phenomenal SP aspect which completely rocked in the first one.

Beat Dragon Age btw… 97 hours. I admit I played through the last bit on easy. I just wanted to see the ending because I’ll be away for a while. So it’s probably pretty close to 100 hours.
Without a doubt… one of the best RPGs I’ve played.

The Stone Prisoner was pretty good. 2 decent sized dungeons and Shale who was awesome. At the price of free I was pretty happy with it.
The Wardens keep was a good level and I really liked the story. It also had some cool battles, and the stores/item box were helpful.
The 2 new abilities were pretty lame. I hated the fact that you couldn’t switch out party members at the base camp. Also the fact that after you beat it it closed for good was stupid.
Asides from the few bad design decisions, and I felt like the item box was held as ransom…. I liked it. It could have maybe been a few dollars cheaper, but I was happy with it.

im buying my gf a PS3 for xmass. im thinking of getting Borderlands so we can play together. LBP and Modnation racers should also be fun for us to play.
She wanted a Wii at first but after I showed her the PS wand and Eye Pet she was blown away and decided to go with a PS3 instead. she also liked God of War Chains of Olympus for PSP (on easy) so I will let her use my GoW collection so she can play it before GoW3 comes out. She is still mad that there is no Mario on the PS3

I discovered a free ‘Snowball Fight’ on Xbox Live yesterday. You basically throw snowballs at your Xbox Live friends when they pop out from behind trees, snowmen etc. It’s fun for around 5 minutes. I keep looking for CAD! hahaha just kidding.
