Final Fantasy XIII nearly sells out in Japan

December 22, 2009

Final Fantasy XIII nearly sells out in Japan Final Fantasy XIII was released last week in Japan and sales have been phenomenal breaking all kinds of records. The initial launch week reports seem to indicate that the game may have come very close to selling out during its first week.

Two days ago, I ran a story about first day sales figures for Final Fantasy XIII. Normally we would have waited for Media Create numbers but it seems like the launch week numbers are out ahead of the reports courtesy of Famitsu/Enterbrain via Yahoo JP.

The first week sales numbers are quite impressive with 1,516,532 standalone copies of Final Fantasy XIII sold for the PS3. Also, approximately 245,406 PS3s were sold that same week including the 250GB PS3 Lightning Edition bundle.

Square Enix confirmed that the company shipped 1.8 million copies of the game to retail chains including the copies within the Lightning Edition PS3 bundles. If we were to assume that the bulk, if not all of the PS3s sold were Lightning Editions for that week than quite possibly it could mean nearly 1.8 copies of Final Fantasy XIII were sold launch week.

Wow. That’s impressive. I only hope that FFXIII will post those same great sales numbers here in the US.

  2. twilight:

I’m not the least bit suprised by these numbers. It is to be expected that this game will sale very well in Japan.

  5. Roca.:

Im looking foward to all of them. Im also looking foward to White Knight Chronicles

I bet Square Enix are kicking themselves in the ass right now for only releasing 360 exclusives in Japan. Seriously, what a stupid move.

Even if the games sucked (which they did) they would have sold really well.

    @Twilight

IT’s japan.. Seriously.. Square-Enix could take a dog turd and write Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest on it and it will sell like hot cakes.

If FFXIII posted these numbers as a PS3 exclusive. Imagine how many copies would have sold in Japan if it was multi platform?

  8. twilight:

    FahkinSuPah,
    Lol.

What a surprise… lol… 1.5 million in the first week is very good, though it doesn’t even come close to DQIX’s sales of 2.34 million it’s first two days there.

  12. Roca.:

Dragon Quest is more popular on Japan

Hey that was mostly done because of the PS3 version was done first and because of Microsoft new deal to get the game too well a water down version.

  14. Barnabe Jones:

I think Micorsoft paid to develop infinite undiscovery and outsourced it to square to finish off. So technically it was a Microsoft game.

The other two (Star Ocean and The Last Remnant) were timed exclusive deals, which probably didn’t work in Square’s favor.

They could have easily sold a few million each. But The Last Remnant sucked so bad they had to cancel the PS3 version, because now everyone knows it sucks.

Star Ocean is pretty shitty also, but should sell pretty well in Japan, but won’t sell nearly as well as it could have.

I probably would have ended up buying Star Ocean if it was released day one. But since then I’ve had time to do some research on the game… it looks really bad.

Mash attack button to win. Maybe throw a potion here and there. Annoying kids. Horrible, horrible dialog. Actually Square saved me from wasting money on that POS.

  15. Roca.:

why compared DS sales vs PS3 sales

the DS install base is 20 times bigger than the PS3.

  16. Ivan_PSP:

LoL and yet DS still sucks just like the Wii.

  17. stopstopp:

The wii isn’t that bad and neither is the DS. They might not have all the hardcore games, but they have many good games of their own.

  18. FahKinSuPah:

Infinite Undiscovery, The Last Remnant, and Star Oceon…

IU is easily the best out of the three. It’s not a bad game at all.

I own TLR as well but I only got to the end of disc 1 before I stopped playing. It’s not the worst game I have ever played but its not exactly the best either. I think what ultimately made me put it down was that I got frustrated with the non existant leveling system.

SO on the other hand… A buddy of mine rented it and after playing it for 1 hour said No and let me check it out. I got about as far as he did before I said No F’n way and gave it back. The graphic style was just horrible and the character designs were just as bad.

  19. phranctoast:

Thats a shame about Star Ocean as I enjoyed the previous one I borrowed from a friend.

  20. Roca.:

    Star Ocean 1 was ok

Star Ocean 2 and 3 were awesome games

  21. phranctoast:

only played 3. I enjoyed it.

  22. Roca.:

Square Enix made a bad decision when they decided to accept checks from MS to make J-style games for the 360.

here is what they have put up so far and thier average review scores.

    -Star Ocean 4 – 72
    -Infinite Undiscovery – 68
    -Final Fantasy XI – 66
    -Last Remnant – 66
-Project Sylpheed: Arc of Deception -64

  23. harry sachz:

I didn’t finish The Last Remnant. Got to the second disc though. The levelling up was shitty. You fight a monster and get whipped, so you go out into the fields and kill some random monsters, come back stronger to fight the monster, only for it to have levelled up also and still kick my arse.

Am intending to finish Blue Dragon one day too. I was really enjoying that, but it got lost between all the other games I got later.

  24. SW:

I had the same experience with blue dragon.

  25. ToshithegreaT:

I liked blue dragon too, i loved its artwork, Music was great especially the boss battle one (i hated it atfirst, but then i started liking it) but i felt the game was quite easy (except bloody king poo)Story was just ok nothing special and the voice actor for marumaro $ucked big time, though that bugger eventually started growing on me with his antics (Lady Zola lol)..

  26. ToshithegreaT:

and ya i liked kluke and Zola the most.. It took me 135 hrs to complete the game to 100% ..

  27. SW:

    “the boss battle one ”

    Well thank you very much!

I know have that annoying song stuck in my head!!!

    *grumble*

;) (and yes I really do hate it)…

  28. harry sachz:

i wanted to mute maru maru…

  29. SW:

I wanted to punch him ;)

  30. SW:

I have to give it to Maru tho, he wasn’t as annoying as Edge Maverick when he entered his ‘cry baby’ stage in Star Ocean (‘ZOMG I was slightly responsible for getting some people killed! WAHHH!’)…….

  31. ToshithegreaT:

    “eternity” ;)

  32. ToshithegreaT:

I was quite surprised to find out, that the voice actor for marumaro also did Mack in Lost Odyssey..
    Who would’ve thot :)
