MAG beta going live… soon… briefly

December 22, 2009

MAG beta going live... soon... brieflyI am of course referring to Massive Action Game and the “100 percent open PSN beta.” The PS3 exclusive has actually been in beta for some time, but testing was limited to North America and those chosen to participate. But on Jan. 4, the MAG beta goes live for everyone.

After several months of beta testing, it has been announced that MAG has gone gold, meaning the game is on its way in its current state. However, that doesn’t mean there isn’t a little more time for ironing out those last few issues, and so the MAG beta for all is going live on Jan.4, 2010. It’ll unfortunately die on Jan. 10, but as the full game is being release just a couple of weeks later this shouldn’t cause too much heartache.

The size of the MAG beta is rather large, so it’s being made available to download from tomorrow (Dec. 22) in the U.S. and on Christmas Day in Asia. Us lucky Europeans are going to have to wait until Jan. 4 and then fight tooth and nail for the download, because Sony and Zipper hate us continental types.

I can’t wait for MAG to come out. Unfortunately, I’ll be broke when it comes out since I’m buying Modern warfare 2.

I already have the fourth beta from my little cousin account can’t wait for this one. I get the game first day it comes out. Also Massive Action Game is not the official abbreviation for MAG. Only possible on PS3 256 players damn sweet.

  5. phranctoast:

    @harry.

    not really..he reads..lol

  6. stopstopp:

I heard it has some longer load times. But 256 players at once makes up for it in my opinion!

    Gameplay
The game will utilize a new server architecture to support online battles with up to 256 players, with users divided into 8-player squads, with 4 squads forming a platoon, and 4 platoons forming a company. Each squad will be led by a player who has advanced through the game’s ranking system. Character statistics and development will also increase with frequent gameplay. The players most advanced in rank will be able to either direct the battle or participate directly in combat.

Basic battles will take place within ongoing, faction-based campaigns to encourage the player to actively play. The game’s E3 unveiling trailer featured large landscapes, tactics such as air strikes and parachuting, and a variety of vehicles, from tanks and APCs to airplanes.

Players will be able to customize the face, voice, and armor of their characters, as well as what weapons and kit they carry into battle. The game will be a first-person shooter.

    Story
    Background

The game begins in 2025. As time passes in our modern world, maintaining a full scale military becomes a burden. In a fully globalized world, the only security threat is from small scale rogue organizations against whom large forces are useless, and the fuel needed to supply increasingly mechanized armies becomes more costly. As a result, most nations armies decrease to the size necessary to defend against a “national emergency”. Furthermore, under the “Millennium Accord”, no nation’s military is permitted to leave its own borders, officially creating world peace. In their place rise PMCs (Private Military Corporations). They have two advantages: first, they compete, lowering their cost, and second, they are allowed to work for anyone, anywhere. In an unregulated global economy, the companies soon compete by less than honest means. After enough mergers, bargains and buy-outs, however, the remaining PMCs decided to use their weapons to full use. The original attacks followed a simple plan; shoot their soldiers, supply goes down causing them to charge more and ultimately, they go out of business. The shadow war, as it was called, grew in secret until the conflict moved into full swing, with the PMCs securing their own interests and violently fighting for contracts. It is unclear if the story will continue after release or remain static.

    Factions

The game will contain three different private military company factions:

    * Seryi Volk Executive Response/S.V.E.R. (pronounced “Sever”), a ragtag military force with personnel drawn from war-torn countries.

    * Raven Industries, a faction with high-tech weapons and armor.

    * Valor Company, whose soldiers are equipped with more standard-styled gear.

    Key Features

    * Massive Action – For the first time ever, fight up to 256 real players online.
    * Command Structure – Think leadership is in your blood? Use your advanced skills and experience points to take charge of your PMC’s forces, becoming a squad, platoon or even army commander.
    * Unique Leveling System – A robust and flexible leveling system awarding experience points for both mission-critical and non mission-critical actions on the battlefield.
    * Persistent World – Missions and campaigns appear around the world as the missions ebb and flow.
    * Choose Your Faction – Three distinct PMCs to choose from, each with their own history, personality and style.
    * Customization – Customize your character as well as weaponry and pursue a wide variety of combat specialties from elite fighter to a general of an army.

The game is scheduled for release in North America on January 26, 2010 and in Europe on January 29, 2010.

I downloaded the beta, but when they finally opened it up to everyone, there were only two day left. So I never had a chance to actually play it.

I’m glad they are finally having an open beta. Seems like a cool concept, but I’d have to play it first.

  22. Barnabe Jones:

    Ivan,

I tried to sign up for the Final Fantasy XIV beta from the link you posted. They are only taking PC beta testers at the moment. It said they are going to open it up to PS3 users at a later date.

    Barnabe Jones:
If i get a PS3 beta code i will redeem it in my other PSN account so i can shared it with you guys. I always get codes.

I played the beta is awesome also there’s so many things to do pure insane fun. I like how they open the beta now to the public.

SS-”I heard it has some longer load times. But 256 players at once makes up for it in my opinion!”

You heard right it does have long load times, don’t listen to what Ivan has to say about that. It’s even longer waiting for a game to half way fill up so you can play. Plus your spawn time is pretty long to. Not dissing the game just stating facts.

Ivan-” I always get codes. I played the beta is awesome also there’s so many things to do pure insane fun. I like how they open the beta now to the public”

If I remember correctly Ivan when the beta came out and I was playing it, I ask you over the PSN if you were in it and you told me some shit about not being able to access it due to your account. So while I was playing MAG beta you were playing shitty Rag Doll Kung Fu and bitching about it lmao. So when this beta goes public again your ass is going to get pwned just like all the other noobs. And I got news for ya, it takes awhile to build up a gun and get a half ass decent sniper rifle that don’t jiggle on you when your looking thru your scope, or to even get a scope worth looking thru. And since you called me a FAG for reading books, I am calling BS on your so called MAG experience. :D

    Harry Harry Harry!!!

Your doing it all wrong. Your suppose to hijack the thread and make multiple list of Xbox 360 games and then you diss every PS3 game and basically throw support behind every stupid comment in support of pro 360 and then blame a PSbot for starting it. LOL

    “CAD

    are you getting a ps3?”

    Liquid

I’ll consider it at the end of 2010. Hopefully I can get a Boxing day deal. I just personally think I’m to busy for a second console and I’m very happy with my 360. I had a daughter on November 15 and since then my gaming is going down hill. Wife and Child will keep you from gaming.

  33. CAD:

    Roca

Once I play MAG I’ll give a real opinoin. As of right now I think it’s overblown more of the same thing.

  34. Ivan_PSP:

    CAD:
I hope you not lying right now. But once you experience the PS3 there’s just no way in HELL you gonna go back to playing only Xbox 360. I’m glad you at least going to try it even if is that late better late then never i guess. GOOD LUCK.

do man or even try and wait for the january sales, could be a good few deals going down. now is a really good time to get a ps3, i know im a PS fan, but you will not regret your purchase, you might of if we were in 2007 lol but sony has finally copped on and its only gona get better for us gamers out there. is anyone getting alien vs predator in feb? online will kick ass if its anything like avp 2 on PC

  37. kev:

it seems hard to get excited about something like this when sony allows cheaters and hackers to run amock on their online “service” without penalty…

    h**p://www.destructoid.com/why-glitching-in-modern-warfare-2-is-sony-s-problem-157891.phtml

  38. phranctoast:

I’ll be getting avp. I loved the games on the pc.

  39. Barnabe Jones:

    Kev,

Yeah Deststructiod is a credible site… fail.

I’m sure you would rather they ban everyone every chance they get like M$. M$ did that ban right before the holidays to help drum up some sales.

  40. kev:

“Yeah Deststructiod is a credible site”

    PS3 fanboy response #1,305……

yes, i do prefer banning cheaters….

  41. Liquid:

well kev how does it feel to be the real life forty year old virgin? im guessing pretty shit huh? btw its only third party games that sony doesnt moderate, all 1st and 2nd party are moderated. you see your bedroom window kev? do everyone a favour and go jump out of it. . .

  42. Liquid:

    phranc

yeah avp on pc was amazing, do you remember the online modes “hunt” and “overrun” ? i read that they are two of the many game modes, them two wer my fav.

  43. Liquid:

*in the new avp* i meant to say that above lol

  44. SW:

I’ve seen complaints of cheating for MW2 across all platforms, especially PC atm.

My favourite glitchs I’ve seen so far was the wierd Javelin trick (which I understand is patched now),
and the 360 unlimited ammo hack, but I’m sure that one is or will be patched soon.

Being that I’ve never played the game you may ask why do I think that 360 glitch is cool, weeeeeeeeelllll basically I believe you just need to pull your 360 hdd and modifiy a flag for unlimited ammo. That flag is NOT reset when you change games or servers. Soooo when you join a server the server sets the flag to 1 allowing unlimited ammo. If you then become host you pass it on to all the players on your server, and so on ;)
and it gets wiped if you quit out of MW2 back to the dash, so it doesn’t cause any perm damage.

Its always neat when some crazy ‘virus’ like thing happens in game (like when all those people were dying in WoW due to some bug with a curse/disease not clearing after a quest was completed…)

  45. phranctoast:

From the same story kev posted.

“[Editor's Note: We're not just a (rad) news site -- we also publish opinions/editorials from our community & employees like this one, though be aware that it may not jive with the opinions of Destructoid as a whole, or how our moms raised us. Want to post your own article in response? Publish it now on our community blogs.]”

    He also said this.

“On a technical and short-term level, I do agree that gameplay issues with Modern Warfare 2 are not Sony’s problem. It’s true that Sony’s real responsibilities begin and end with providing a platform with which customers can take Modern Warfare 2 online, and that dealing with in-game issues rests on Infinity Ward’s shoulders. I can’t debate that. Sony is under no obligation to do anything but keep the PlayStation Network up and running, especially because it’s free. Microsoft went above and beyond, but even so, it’s beholden to its Xbox Live subscribers thanks to the fee it charges for online play. Sony is not tied to its service in such a manner.

That said, however, I believe that Sony is dropping the ball by being so casual and hands-off with the PlayStation Network. Sony is absolutely not responsible for hacking in Modern Warfare 2, but it is clearly in Sony’s best interest to keep the PSN as free from glitches and cheating as possible. It’s not just about Modern Warfare 2, it’s about making sure the PS3 is a convenient, useful, and fun resource for the many PS3 owners out there.”

With people getting banned for this you have the possibility of people not cheating getting unintentially banned.
Read what SW showed. Glitch is passed to everyone.

  46. Ghost:

yep I will be getting AVP :D

  47. Ivan_PSP:

I have never experience any cheating on the PSN but if i had i will right away add the person glitching so he can teach me.

  48. stopstopp:

Ghost: Oh well, I bet we all have lived through worse load times. I don’t think load times should be a deal breaker if the game is great.

  49. Ghost:

SS- Your right man about not letting something like that get in the way of not getting a game if it is great. I wasn’t trying to bash MAG, I was just trying to answer your question honestly that’s all. I think Sony or whoever it is publishing it is really doing something cool and inventive. This as far as my knowledge of the subject goes, is the first game of this scope on a console. And if you are into fps’s and online mp play then this is going to be a must have for you. But I promise you that when you are playing this and are caught up in the heat of the battle you are going to be cussing the game for it’s long ass load/spawn times. But should that or the mediocre graphics keep you from buying it (if you are into this type of game) no I don’t think it should. But is MAG a “Great Game” I don’t know yet I haven’t played all the levels or seen all there is to it yet.

  50. phranctoast:

I personally didn’t enjoy the MAG beta.

I also understand that I didn’t give it much of a chance as two days after getting the code it was blocked to me.

I’ll give it a more thorough look on Jan 5th-10th to determine whether I buy it.

The concept is amazing and I’m in contact with people that act as it’s the second coming of Christ. They obviously know something I don’t as they have been playing so much longer. I see people that play the latest Beta rather than MW2, and that speaks volumes if you ask me.

  51. stopstopp:

Hmmmm, I’ve been thinking and… I just realized this will be my second shooter game ever. does anyone have any recommendations of games where I can train in the way of the shooter?

  52. Ivan_PSP:

The MAG beta is out now go download it i got it as soon as they added it lol

  53. Roca.:

“does anyone have any recommendations of games where I can train in the way of the shooter?”

Halo ODST if your willing to pay $50 in order to play online. if not you can try Resistance 2, KZ2 or MW2

but if you are looking for a game similar to MAG…Im guessing Battlefied Bad Company is your best bet

  54. CarlB:

A lot of pros seem to have gotten their start in Halo 1, 2, or 3 (international competitions), and if your serious top rankers can also train you online (PC/360). I also hear any of the COD’s are good.

  55. phranctoast:

    Modern Warfare 2 patched

    h**p://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/23/modern-warfare-2-patched-on-xbox-360-ps3-and-pc/

It appeared the 360 had the worst glitches out of the two.

The PS3 prestige glitch essentially ruins the game for the one cheating if you ask me.

  56. Roca.:

there have been 7 patched already for the PS3…everytime there is a glitch ruining the game..a patch comes out the day after.

it has taken weeks for the 360 to get some of thier glitches patched
