First Natal game possibly revealed at a holiday party for Xbox 360

December 27, 2009

First Natal game possibly revealed at a holiday party for Xbox 360 Microsoft’s Natal is set to come out for the Xbox 360 sometime next year, which is right around the corner. With Microsoft getting ready for the big Natal push in 2010, it seems like we may have the first glimpse of one of the first titles to make use of the motion sensing camera.

It makes sense that Microsoft is getting a slew of games ready to hit the marketplace upon release of Natal. According to Destructoid, one avid gamer sent the site a video he took during a holiday party showing what may be a glimpse of one of the first Natal centric launch titles. The video shows a man, who is said to be a Natal developer, playing Geometry Wars using the gestures of his hands.

It looks like he is moving his arms and hands to get the ship to fly around while shooting. Check out the video above and let us know if you’re looking forward to playing Geometry Wars on the Xbox 360 with Natal.

  1. Ghost:

So Natal is starting with Atari type games at the beginning?? If this is there Big line up then I don’t see it moving any further than fad phase. Of course the die hard X-girls on here are going to argue and say how this is the best thing since slice bread. Really tho how many people have a theater like projection screen at there house to play video games on??? Just about anything would be fun to play on a screen like that. I guess it’s better than the Pong game video lol. Maybe they will come out with a new version of Pac-man with Master Chief as the main character??

  2. Spideydog:

That was soooo unimpressive ….. his hand gestures seemed to totally have nothing to do with the movement of the game or it was totally out of sync ??!!

I am still no fan of “no controller” and I think it will limit what games can be done.

  3. Ghost:

About the video itself. Sorry Mike but I think this is just a publicity stunt of some sort and it looks pretty fake imo. I don’t doubt the game is real and more than likely it is really Natal. But that guy is trying to hard not to look like an idiot and failing completely. A featherless Dj scratching chicken comes to mind for some reason? I don’t know I just think it feels phony. What do you guys think??

  4. Ghost:

“his hand gestures seemed to totally have nothing to do with the movement of the game or it was totally out of sync ??!!”

That caught my eye too. I call phony on this video!!!.

  5. CAD:

Mike did you not realize he is wearing the vest. The same Vest I was talking about. The vest is suppose to provide rumble. Oh my goodness I can’t wait for Natal to drop.

  6. CAD:

So I ended up buying the 360 steering wheel for boxing day and wow, why did I not get this before. I’ve tried wheels in the past and found them awkward and not feeling right. The 360 steering wheel is a must have if you love racing games. You have no idea what this thing does for a game like Forza 3. When these reviewers and saying is feels like the real thing you will never understand because the standard controller will not give the same feel. The wheel on the other hand works great and gives that real feel. I love the force feedback that the wheel provides.

  7. CarlB:

    “What do you guys think??”

Uh, yes, this looks ten times cooler (“phoney” or not) than the flying monkey in EyePet or anything the Eye has done to date.

  8. Ghost:

Whatever smart-ass, I wasn’t comparing Natal or this video to anything Sony has made. If you think this is ten times better well then good for you, although your taste is in question, to each his on I guess. I have not praised the “eye-pet” or do I know much about it yet. But what I do know is that I have not seen any phoney videos posted on a gaming site showing off 1970’s style games and graphics.

  9. Kevo/Sir_Chubs_Alot08:

i sure as hell wouldnt want someone looking through my window and seeing me doing that shit

  10. FahKinSuPah:

    @Kevo

There are alot of worse things that I wouldn’t want my neighbors seeing me do through my window. But why would they be looking in my window anyway? Peeping toms…

Anyway… I thought this looked kinda cool but Geometry wars? Couldn’t they preview it with something better? I mean it’s a nice game but extremely difficult! And thats just playing it normally, with a controller. I can’t see how Natal would contribute anything other than extra unnescesary difficulty to this game. I didn’t see him die enough times.

For those who are questioning if the clip is fake or out of sync, that the hands are not matching up pay attention to 0:20. You will see him move his left hand outwards to the left then circle it over to the right. You can plainly see the ship following his movement. It appears to be about .5 sec behind but you can see plain as day that it matches his movements.

I was curious to see how the bombs are controlled. You can see him use one but because of the crappy camera angle you can’t see the exact gesture he uses. Looks to be a double open-hand gesture.

  11. ViRuS:

    @ Ghost

Xgirls? Please stop with all the petty nonsense.

This natel stuff doesn’t really interest me. If it did, I’d purchase a nintendo wii.

  12. ViRuS:

    I agree with CarlB

As poor as this natal thing appears, it still looks better than that stupid monkey thing on the PS3.

I suppose if this was a sony product, every cun7 would be sleverin about how great it is/looks.

This kinda thing is just about trying to lure the casual market. A gimmick for all the trendies to wet themselves over. The Wii is the king of that castle though, I’d say it’s too late to alter that.

I wouldn’t consider myself a fanboy, but there is a huge bias towards Sony on this site. Why? I dunno.

  13. FahKinSuPah:

    @ViRuS

Maybe it’s possible with Sony and Microsoft’s motion control efforts the Wii won’t have such a strong hold over the casual market. We already know that when it comes to us hardcore gamers the Wii just isn’t for us, aside from a few games. We know that a few great games don’t make a system. (I own a Wii. Aside from Metroid Prime Trilogy and Zelda there isn’t much else worth my time)

When the Wii came out the motion control thing was basically just a gimmick to entice people into checking it out. To a hardcore gamer the lack of graphical power was a letdown but the motion controls held all the promise. Unfortunately Nintendo let us all down and is obviously not a hardcore friendly system. They focus entirely too much on the casual and family scenes. Even a couple of unpolished gems, like No more heroes, was not enough to save it.

Natal and Sony’s wand (or whatever the heck it is/will be) hold alot of promise because we all know that Sony and Microsoft has not forsaken us, the hardcore gamer. Who wouldn’t like to play a more realistic driving game (like Forza) with a fully functional Natal? That would be an incredible experience. Imagine a God of War were you swing your arms around to make Kratos swing his chained blades. That would be awsome! God.. my arms hurt just thinking of that last one… the game related injuries would be funny as all hell too! I’d love to see that on youtube lol

  14. phranctoast:

Who was asking for a comparison Carlb? Why would you ever bring that up troll?

    *rolls eyes*

  15. SW:

IF this is real, then its a bad example of natal IMO.

Theres a reason machines build things for us, we aint that precise. For the type of game being played, I would prefer a controller any day of the week. I’m not here to ‘have fun waving my arms around’ I’m here to blow that shit up on the screen to the best of my ability ;)

  16. CarlB:

“But what I do know is that I have not seen any phoney videos posted on a gaming site showing off 1970’s style games and graphics.”

You must not be that old. Sorry, but geometry wars graphics didn’t exist in the 70’s, or the 80’s for that matter. In the 90’s, sure, but this is more an experiment for initial basic functionality than a final product.

So many Sony troll responses so far, and especially right off the bat.

“So Natal is starting with Atari type games at the beginning??” – Sorry, but there was nothing on any Atari console that even came halfway to looking (let alone playing) as good as geometry wars.

I know Geometry Wars Retro Evolved is still a sore point with PS3 only owners. Seeing as how the sequel still holds “universal acclaim” on Metacritic and PS3 doesn’t have anything in the genre close, of course there will be some sour grapes.

“Really tho how many people have a theater like projection screen at there house to play video games on???”

Did you ever stop to think they used a large projection screen so people could clearly see both the player and the screen at the same time on a video? Common sense.

“I suppose if this was a sony product, every cun7 would be sleverin about how great it is/looks.”

    Beyond a doubt.

“I wouldn’t consider myself a fanboy, but there is a huge bias towards Sony on this site. Why? I dunno.”

    Agreed.

“Whatever smart-ass, I wasn’t comparing Natal or this video to anything Sony has made.”

Nah, you just compared it to Atari console games, 70’s games, and mentioned a version of Pacman with Master Chief as the character, so I thought it was only fair to bring in Sony’s new mascot, EyePet’s flying monkey.

“Of course the die hard” P-girls “on here are going to argue and say how this is the” worst idea ever. Of course after they are through ridiculing it they feel they then need to call it “phoney” due to slight lag in prototype tech… lol.

“Who was asking for a comparison Carlb? Why would you ever bring that up troll?”

Never mind the troll comments before that phranc. But in any case, it was an honest answer to an honest question. Ghost asked us what we thought, and seeing the video made me think of what Sony was doing with the PS3’s “motion sensing camera”… you know, the same one every PBot here and their brother claims Natal “copied” (never mind Microsoft had been working with computer vision for years before the Eye)? The last video I saw of it had a flying monkey.

    “*rolls eyes*”

  17. Saber_HAHAha:

Natal has the potential to be pretty good. I’m not going to judge it on any of it’s current footage, since there’s a good chance that it’s not completely real.

HOWEVER, MOTION SENSING SHOULD —>NOT<— BECOME THE BASIS FOR CONSOLE CONTROLS!!!

Add some fun little family mini-games for it. However, I can NOT see myself sitting on the couch grasping at an invisible steering wheel, or even a plastic one for that matter. If this turns into some novelty publicity stunt, like the WiiMote, I'm going to RIP MY EYES OUT OF THE SOCKETS.

…or, it could end up being great.

I'm a little paranoid when it comes to motion sensing.

  18. Saber_HAHAha:

Bah, what the hell? I make a multiple paragraph-long post, and it doesn’t show up. It’ll probably end up magically appearing once I enter this one. Whatever, just in case it doesn’t:

MOTION SENSING SHOULD NOT BECOME THE BASIS FOR VIDEO GAME CONTROLS.

IF THIS ENDS UP BEING A NOVELTY PUBLICITY STUNT LIKE THE WIIMOTE, I WILL RIP MY EYES OUT OF THE SOCKETS.

I LIKE CAP LOCKS, ALTHOUGH THEY MAKE ME LOOK LIKE A DOUCHE.

…or, Natal could be great. It has the potential to.

I’m paranoid about motion sensing. Thank Nintendo.

  19. Roca.:

    Awards goes to carlb

  20. me_:

“So Natal is starting with Atari type games at the beginning??”

Well I’m sure that’s the impression Mike was trying to give. I’m looking forward to seeing more of Mikes Natal is crap even though I’ve never used it articles in the lead up to its release :P

  21. CarlB:

“MOTION SENSING SHOULD NOT BECOME THE BASIS FOR VIDEO GAME CONTROLS.”

The existing controllers for PS3 and 360 already “sense” the motion of your hands, the only difference is you are holding something. No doubt this may not be as accurate in it’s first iterations, but has anyone seen the level of control depicted with the video game featured in Children of Men? Voice and motion control featured in Minority Report? Voice and motion control featured in Mass Effect 2 trailers? It is a beginning, and at first it may only function as an alternative for your remote, or maybe something more. It certainly has the potential to be much better than what we have seen so far. Sony hasn’t been able to bring this level of functionality with the Eye yet… maybe Microsoft can.

  22. Ghost:

“You must not be that old. Sorry, but geometry wars graphics didn’t exist in the 70’s, or the 80’s for that matter. In the 90’s, sure, but this is more an experiment for initial basic functionality than a final product.”

Apparently in your worked up X-box nerd rage you misunderstood what I said? I never said geo wars was a 1970’s game. But it is and does look like a 1970’s STYLE game.

“So many Sony troll responses so far, and especially right off the bat.”

So I am a troll because I call it like I see it? M$ has been hyping this shit since E3. Don’t hate on me because all you are getting is a hands free souped up Atari.

“Sorry, but there was nothing on any Atari console that even came halfway to looking (let alone playing) as good as geometry wars.”

Sure Carl whatever you say. Go to your local Walmart and buy one those little game systems for $20 bucks, I think it comes with about 9 atari games built in. Of course you can’t wave at it or snap your fingers to control it like Natal, but it comes with an old fashioned joy-stick you can use. Seeing how it is this many generations ahead of Atari, I sure hope that the all powerful 360 can make an Atari game look better. You can dip a turd in gold but underneath it is still a turd.

” Did you ever stop to think they used a large projection screen so people could clearly see both the player and the screen at the same time on a video? Common sense.”

Again you are only seeing what you want to see. They used such a large screen so they could try and pass this off as something cool and fun to play. Can you inmagine what it would have looked like infront of a normal T.V.? I guess you can always just put a glow stick in your hand and say you are practicing rave dancing. If they were showcasing like you said then they would have had a camera infront of the player and another one on the screen. common sense?

“I suppose if this was a sony product, every cun7 would be sleverin about how great it is/looks.”

Nope sorry if Sony came out with some BS like this then I would be saying the same thing. I would prob be even more harsher on my judgement.

“I wouldn’t consider myself a fanboy, but there is a huge bias towards Sony on this site. Why? I dunno.”

Lmao your a fan-boy alright..”But I have both consoles and enjoy ps3 exclusives” hahaha closet fanboy.

“Nah, you just compared it to Atari console games, 70’s games, and mentioned a version of Pacman with Master Chief as the character, so I thought it was only fair to bring in Sony’s new mascot, EyePet’s flying monkey.”

I did take a dig at X-box’s unsung hero Master Chief, but I stand by that Atari statement, yes it looks better but that’s about all that can be said. And if that offends you or makes you want to come back with an anti-sony statement that’s fine closet fanboy but this article isn’t about the flying monkey is it?

“Of course the die hard” P-girls “on here are going to argue and say how this is the” worst idea ever. Of course after they are through ridiculing it they feel they then need to call it “phoney” due to slight lag in prototype tech… lol.”

Hey man that natal/video looks like shit imo. And they are supposed to be releasing this shortly so I would think it’s way past “prototype” phase? I think there was a another guy behind the rave dancer with a control in his hand and talking to our dancing buddy through via headset on his head? And even if I am wrong it still does not make up for the fact that this looks like shit imo.

“Never mind the troll comments before that phranc. The last video I saw of it had a flying monkey.”

Troll comments lol the only dig I took was about X-girls getting offended which some of you obviously did, and about a Pac-Man Master Chief. The rest is just your closet fanboy side taking over. And no it wasn’t an “honest answer to a question” I asked what did people think about the video being fake. And we all got your ear full of an answer too, It might not have anything to do with the questioned asked but I guess it was an answer all the same right :D

  23. Ghost:

If they are going this route with games motion control and whatnot, why don’t they make something that goes around your head and ears to give you a complete in game experience. I mean not everybody will be able to get a projection T.V. to make these games come to life.

  24. Ghost:

“go around your head, eyes, and ears”

  25. Saber_HAHAha:

    @Carl

Well, I suppose that the existing controllers are completely motion-based, but this is more twitch-action with the thumb and index fingers during intense sessions. Sixaxis brings a sort of marble-in-box motion sense controlled by tilting, but games such as Warhawk and Lair are better done with analog sticks (although I heard that they work seamlessly in Flower). Sixaxis, the current highest level of motion sensing in a remote if you put camera-operated peripherals aside, should stick to setting charges in Killzone 2 and whatnot.

I guess that I’ve been gaming too long by the use of well co-ordinated thumbs and forefingers to accept a major change unless it is really something.

    @Ghost

You are on the right track when it comes to immersions on TVs. The best you can possibly get it probabl on an iMax screen with the highest current resolution (7680 x 4320 I believe), and 22.2 sound. However, what they need to start trying in theaters is a curved sort of screen for not only surround-sound, but a surround/video effect. Maybe a full 360 degree circle screen that moves to focus the action. That’s just a crappy idea off the top of my head.

So, we have sight and sound covered, and physical feel has also been placed into video games since the joy stick and rumble to things like Natal. When are we going to enter some of the other senses? I’m sure that, for many movies, smell isn’t exactly something you’d be looking forward to, but it could be something to try. Taste? If the main character is eating, and it is in first-person, sure.

An interesting idea is a giant fully-rotation spherical ball that moves seamlessly with steps. And full-image vision goggles. That sounds like some overpriced Japanese-only thing that I know already exists, but in 200 years when they could create a realistic and seamless environment inside that gigantic ball, it might be a standard.

Gotta think outside the box. Waaaay out of the box.

  26. Ghost:

“However, what they need to start trying in theaters is a curved sort of screen for not only surround-sound, but a surround/video effect. Maybe a full 360 degree circle screen that moves to focus the action. That’s just a crappy idea off the top of my head.”

Actually something to that effect would be cool. What I was saying was try something like a mask or helmet that goes over your head to trick your senses into thinking your really in the game. I can see where a Natal like tech would be useful for your hands and legs so you can move and react in the game world. And the last thing on your mind would be what you looked like because you would be so involved in the game. I don’t see why it would be so hard to make or why we don’t already have something like this out? Yes it would do away with having to have a t.v. but it wouldn’t necessarily mean getting rid of the console if you made the console part of the requirements to run the new tech. So they would still make money off of everything. In Denver, when I was younger we had an arcade place you could go to and besides all the games and stuff you could play, they had a virtual reality thing were you payed 5 bucks to play. While I thought it was cool at the time it still needed alot of work. What ever happend to that kind of stuff and why haven’t they improved and made it available to the public.

  27. Spideydog:

@CarlB “So many Sony troll responses so far, and especially right off the bat.”

I certainly hope that was not directed at me ….. I had an opinion that is looked shit, and way outta a sync. If it looked good and in sync, I would have praised it, but it simply was not the case. I had an opinion and I shared it.

If I was going to show case the “next big thing” I would show off a waaaaaay better game than a beefed up Atari looking arcade shooter that makes you look like your dancing with muppets.

Looking at this example does not make me want to buy Natal and if Sony showed the same thing, I would dis it too. :)

  28. CarlB:

“They used such a large screen so they could try and pass this off as something cool and fun to play.”

Sorry, you’re right, of course, they really should have used a 7″ netbook screen so it wouldn’t seem like they were trying to “pass this off as something cool” instead?

“You can dip a turd in gold but underneath it is still a turd.”

Right. 90 on Metacritic is a “turd”, whatever. If that’s the case then KZ2 must be a turd as well, and though it may be dipped in platinum, it is still a turd, it only looks slightly better than Doom from the 90’s right? Not.

“If they were showcasing like you said then they would have had a camera infront of the player and another one on the screen. common sense?”

No, because even more people than there are now would be calling it fake because they couldn’t see both at the same time. Common sense.

“I guess you can always just put a glow stick in your hand and say you are practicing rave dancing.”

That’s called the Gem, or Sony Wand if you prefer, but since you are obviously versed in and favor “rave dancing”, I leave that to you.

I don’t mind at all whether you take a dig at a Halo character or not, as I haven’t played the game this gen, and if you prefer Sony’s flying monkey with what has to date been called here as the “same tech” (Eye) that’s fine, it’s your opinion after all.

“this looks like shit imo.” That’s great bro, you are definitely entitled to it, and it fits (smells, and resembles) the cliche perfectly.

Sorry if my answer (no it doesn’t look fake, it looks like a beta trial) to your question didn’t meet your high standards… but I’ve come to realize some people here don’t really want genuine answers, just something that matches their own “looks like shit because it’s on 360″ opinion. They get highly agitated when it is anything else.

“If they are going this route with games motion control and whatnot, why don’t they make something that goes around your head and ears to give you a complete in game experience. I mean not everybody will be able to get a projection T.V. to make these games come to life.”

They already have had headsets come out in the past, with varying degrees of success. NVidia made one recently, and RealView is coming out with one to work with 3D capable sets, but those work with existing monitors. There are also several glasses that have TFT monitor’s built in (I-glasses is one), but you could buy a decent HDTV for the same price and not look like Jordie (Star Trek) X20.

  29. CarlB:

HAHA… just caught a glimpse of a stack of magazines called “Heavy Fire” in Borderlands on the 360… the captions read “Bigger is Better” and “1300 Pounds of OOMPH!”… lol.

  30. Saber_HAHAha:

    @Ghost

Fitting virtual reality glasses on every person would be hella expensive, so that’s where the fabled circle theatre comes in.

As for virtual reality, you know what we REALLY need? Virtual reality arcades. Have it in Ruckers and pizza parlors. Have it in any mall. Once again, virtual reality arcades would be a huge success. That is, when the time comes when that technology is available and could be distributed cheaply.

Arcades made video games famous, so if virtual reality comes by, it needs (and probably will get) a similar treatment, even if it’s a little different than what I’m proposing.

  31. CarlB:

The Flying Monkey Strikes Back… “Some of the incredibly exciting features of the new PS3 Eyepet will include responses and reaction to various stimuli from kids. He even purrs contentedly when tickled and he can even giggle. Throw him a ball and watch him fetch it.”

    http://hubpages.com/hub/EyePet-PS3

Two vastly different approaches to the tech.

  32. Ghost:

So eye-pet is for 2 year olds? That’s what it looks like to me.

  33. oldschool1987:

New troll award goes to *Drum roll* Carl!

Hand over yor title Kev and Ivan lol.

  34. Spideydog:

What is going on Carl ?? This not you !! Some people here have made some negative comments about the natal demo and you went ape shit and started making comparisons to Ps3 eye pet …… No one started anything about comparisons between Sony and MS until you did.

The whole argument has not been about Sony / MS comparisons, so why make it so ?

If the Sony variant is shit, so be it, but this thread was about the Natal demo of Geometry Wars, not a comparison.

  35. Spideydog:

I don’t mean to go on the attack on you m8, you just seem to have a bee in ya bonnet over something fairly trivial :)

  36. CarlB:

“No one started anything about comparisons between Sony and MS until you did.”

Actually, I remember Mike saying Natal was basically the same as the Eye, nothing new. Sorry if I upset you.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but the Eye is Sony’s “motion sensing camera”, correct?

Where was the uproar over the comparison back in those articles? Mysteriously absent.

  37. me_:

This article is really just trying to bash Natal before it’s released. Kind of the opposite to all those “PS3 exclusive X uses Y % of the PS3s true power” articles that Mike likes so much.

I wouldn’t take it seriously, its just stupid trash talk. Maybe Carl just cracked.

  38. CarlB:

    Spidey: BORDERLANDS… must play.

  39. Spideydog:

@CarlB “Actually, I remember Mike saying Natal was basically the same as the Eye, nothing new. Sorry if I upset you.”

I’m not upset m8, but I was talking about this thread, not what has been said previously in other articles/threads.

Anyways, I will give Borderlands a crack. Just need some more dollars ;) Trying to upgrade my drumkit. It sounds really good actually.

Whatever people’s opinons are with Natal and Ps3 wand, I think I will reserve my FULL judgement for when they both come out in their full glory …. lol

  40. Spideydog:

@CarlB – You get it pretty cheap on Steam at the moment. It is better on PC or would you recommend it for 360?

  41. CarlB:

No problem, just thought it was natural to compare it to the latest on each console. For some reason or other there have been no articles on the Eye lately, only Natal, which is surprising considering how much is covered here on PS3 when compared to 360…

I would recommend Borderlands for PS3, 360, or PC… though I have only played it on 360. I think this may be one case where the graphics don’t look better on either, but it also depends on where most of your friends are playing, which may be PS3 or 360. Personally I prefer consoles, not only because I do not have a proper gaming PC, but also because I can’t rent PC games through Gamefly, and because of achievements/trophies.

  42. Spideydog:

That is true, I don’t think I have heard a thing about any ps3 eye games, maybe they’re not worth talking about ?? Although I think there is a whole lot more hype and pressure on Natal to be as good as it is being worked up to be …. lets hope it is.

Thats not a bad idea about borderlands actually, I may hire it first. It will have to wait until late Feb though for when I get back home.

  43. CarlB:

“I don’t think I have heard a thing about any ps3 eye games, maybe they’re not worth talking about ??”

Really? There was a presentation done at Gamescom 09… surprising they didn’t mention it here… well, in any case, here you go:

    http://www.gamerglotze.de/ViewMovie?flv_id=2385

It looks alright for small children (though they may need help with the drawing) and the virtual pet/tamagotchi crowd (not a fan).

“Although I think there is a whole lot more hype and pressure on Natal to be as good as it is being worked up to be”

Yes, there does seem to be more effort being put behind Natal (marketing and devs from what I hear on the major podcasts) at this point compared to Gem… I don’t know why. In any case, Natal should serve as a decent remote to start with (I like gadgets, but I’m not sure if I will buy it right away – I haven’t even bought the Eye or 360 camera yet), whether it will have decent PARTS in games, let alone full games, is yet to be seen.

  44. CarlB:

And the full “ONLY ON PLAYSTATION” trailer for your viewing pleasure:

  45. FahKinSuPah:

People here crack me up. You look like a bunch of idiots. “oh this is an atari game!”

I grew up with an Atari 2600. My parents couldn’t get the controller out of my hands when I was 2. There is no comparison between an Atari 2600 game and any game released today.

I mean just look at Adventure. (begin sarcasm) that is the BEST RPG ever!!! You play as a Square and you run around collecting stuff. I mean, heck this is obviously the game that inspired Final Fantasy. The graphics are so much alike! (end sarcasm)

I think we need an alternate form of torture for idiots… We should tie them down and force them to play E.T. on Atari 2600, which is one of the worst games known to mankind.

  46. Spideydog:

“And the full “ONLY ON PLAYSTATION” trailer for your viewing pleasure:”

    LOL

  47. phranctoast:

Natal Plagued with lag. Sony device better.

  48. Roca.:

that video was awful and the lag was noticeable.

good thing the Wand is the only one capable of 1:1 montions

  49. Roca.:

“What is going on Carl ?? This not you !! Some people here have made some negative comments about the natal demo and you went ape shit and started making comparisons to Ps3 eye pet”

yeah I thought the comparasion was pretty stupid too, since Natal is a peripheral and “Eye Pet” is a game. but anyways there was not need to bring that up.

  50. Sorral:

Comparing those is pretty dumb, yes.

@CarlB “Never mind the troll comments before that phranc. The last video I saw of it had a flying monkey.”

Sources for your wide claims? They better be older than when Sony started testing their motion controllers for the ps2 which was around 1998-1999.
    http://articles.latimes.com/2004/jan/18/business/fi-eyetoy18

I see a new Kev showing up… Are we in luck because of Xmas/new year? ;)

  51. phranctoast:

To prove they were so far behind Sony in this respect look where Natal came from. MS had to buy a company that was working on it. If they were so far ahead and using computer vision why wouldn’t they rely on their learned tech rather than buying something to get them on par with the Sony Tech?

  52. ViRuS:

    @ Ghost

You think just because you own more than one console, you are exempt from being a fanboy?

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!

Everybody favours something, so don’t try playing that same old tired response.

Please stop talking shit chief, the smell is becoming pretty unbearable.

  53. ViRuS:

Also Ghost, I aint a fanboy.

I don’t see any point in offering my unwavering alligiance to companies like MS or Sony when they only care about the contents of my wallet.

If you like the product they are selling, you will purchase it. Nothing more.

  54. Roca.:

    @ Virus
“You think just because you own more than one console, you are exempt from being a fanboy?”

I believed that was exactly what Ghost was trying to tell CarlB. you probably missed the “quotes” on Ghost’s comment

  55. SW:

    “Everybody favours something”

This is true, but it doesn’t mean you’re a fanboy.

Some of us enjoy the games themselves rather than the machines that run them ;)

    (PC Forever!)

  56. twilight:

I don’t know why but I’m not really all that excited about Natal or Ps3’s device. I tend to just prefer the traditional game controller. I did get a Xbox360 arcade for Christmas but I’m not too sure what games to get for it.

  57. Happyhockum:

    Prototypes.

    That’s all.

The finished article is expected to be so interesting (and such a sales hit) that they are all working towards some sort of advanced motion sensing.

    Some incorporating controllers and all.

Naturally when this all comes out we’ll be treated to the PSbots switching their stance.
Far from the current sulky rubbich that it is something nobodys wants they’ll be telling us all how PS motion stuff is amazing & everyone else’s is not.

    Predictable as always.

  58. Roca.:

at least someone is excited for for Natal…but I can understand where he is coming from ;)

  59. CarlB:

“Sources for your wide claims? They better be older than when Sony started testing their motion controllers for the ps2 which was around 1998-1999.”

Microsoft as a software company not as a console manufacturer. Computer Vision has been in development since the late 1970’s, and includes digital image processing, voice recognition, facial recognition, motion tracking, etc. Here are two later examples of many that feature Microsoft working with computer vision:

  61. Happyhockum:

    Why bother CarlB?

The resident Sony/PS3 shillling troll clearly has absolutely no knowledge nor interest in the facts, he is hard at work just doing everything he can to promote his beloved.

You don’t seriously imagine he’s debating you do you?

  62. CarlB:

“yeah I thought the comparasion was pretty stupid too, since Natal is a peripheral and “Eye Pet” is a game.”

This article is about a game on the Natal, “EyePet” is the latest game on the Eye. It has been said in the past several times that Natal is nothing more than the Eye, so I thought it was a fair comparison to see the latest offerings/directon from each company on what is called by many here as the “same” tech.

  63. CarlB:

    “Why bother CarlB?”

He asked a valid question and I got to educate myself further in the process of answering it.

  64. Sorral:

    lol HH
We both know who is promoting their “beloved” here. ;)

“The finished article is expected to be so interesting (and such a sales hit) that they are all working towards some sort of advanced motion sensing.
    Some incorporating controllers and all.”

You speak and attack me as if you know me, but I shouldn’t bother with you.

    @CarlB
Softimage was bought by Autodesk early in 2009. I doubt that MS will use their patent stuff in natal unless that they don’t care about more lawsuits heading their way.
    http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/pc/index?siteID=123112&id=13571168

  65. Sorral:

Ehh think I misunderstood the part I quoted. Whatever though, I wasn’t promoting anything and I actually dislike motion controllers after trying metroid prime remake and 3 on the wii.

I don’t think that I’ll touch a 360 again let alone get natal. Not sure about the gem either. My PSeye is collecting dust.

  66. Happyhockum:

    Sorral

Now unless somebody is getting really confused with their current log-in nick
    (it has happened before)
I have no idea what you are on about.

I was not referring to anything you had said
(at least not anything under the ‘Sorral’ name).

  67. Ghost:

“People here crack me up. You look like a bunch of idiots. “oh this is an atari game!”

All can say is if you don’t think an Atari game inspired the game shown above then the only idiot I see here is you. The fact that you obviously misunderstood the oringinal comment leaves one to question your reading and comprehensive skills also.

  68. Ghost:

    @Virus
Obviously you suffer from some kind of dumb-ass disorder? Why don’t you go and reread and UNDERSTAND what I wrote before you comment about it. You already claimed on here I don’t know how many times that you are not a fan-boy lol who are you trying to convince. Me thinks you are full of bull-shit and that is the smell you are smelling .

  69. harry sachz:

heh, I guess the christmas spirit has already died in a few people here.

  70. FahKinSuPah:

    @Ghost

I have a crate full of Atari 2600 games. None of them are even romately like Geometry wars. Anyone can say that ANY game inspired another game in the same genre, just like my sarcasm about Adventure inspired the Final Fantasy games, but that doesn’t mean that there really is a connection.

My guess is that after seeing some of your posts, Ghost, that you have a sont logo branded on your left butt cheek.

  71. FahKinSuPah:

    *Sony logo

  72. Sorral:

@HH I was the one who asked CarlB about getting sources and you asked him why bother, etc. Who would it be that you were referring to in your post then?

  73. Happyhockum:

    Sorral

I was referring to Roca’s constant trolling.

  74. harry sachz:

Did someone just try to call CarlB the next kev?

  75. CarlB:

    Sorral,

I’m pretty sure Microsoft has their “patent stuff” covered by now. SoftImage E was one of many of their products from the same time window. FTR, “inspired” is much better than “Atari looking” or “type”.

    @Harry,

Yes, that was Sorral before I answered his question.

  76. Ghost:

“I’m pretty sure Microsoft has their “patent stuff” covered by now. SoftImage E was one of many of their products from the same time window.”

Unrelated to gaming M$ is having patent problems with there Microsoft office word program. Not going to get into it here but I they have been sued for copyright violation and lost.

  77. harry sachz:

    @ CharlieB,

I guess that’s what you get when you don’t drink the kool-aid.

  78. CarlB:

LOL… heard you got one recently with Infamous and MGS4… loved Infamous… MGS4 not so much… let me know what you thought.

  79. Roca.:

    Sorral

dont mind HH, just ignore him next time

  80. harry sachz:

    @ CharlieB,

I am about halfway through inFamous. Trying to be good, I started being bad but was sick of people throwing rocks at me.

I don’t think MGS4 is my type of game. I am more of a fan of blasting the crap out of things rather than stealth. But i’ll see it through when I can. There’s nothing coming out on PS3 in January that interests me (don’t have any interest in MAG) so i’ll have time to complete both games.

But then again, Mass Effect 2 is out in January, so maybe I won’t have time…

  81. oldschool1987:

Good thing bout MGS4 is that you don’t have to be stealthy if you don’t want. Just blast away lol

  82. harry sachz:

    it’s too tempting, oldie.

  83. CarlB:

“I don’t think MGS4 is my type of game.”

I’m with you, even when I blasted away and stuck through it, it wasn’t my type of game. Not that interested in MAG or Heavy Rain either… Bayonetta (maybe Darksiders as well), Mass Effect 2, Dante’s Inferno, Alien Vs Predator, Splinter Cell Conviction, then Final Fantasy XIII and God of War III.

  84. harry sachz:

I am looking forward to God Of War 3, definitely. I’ll probably end up getting FFXIII on the PS3 if the prices are similar. But yeah, definitely looking forward to SC, ME2, Alan Wake and Halo Reach later down the track. Joyride looks like fun too.

I was interested in Heavy Rain, but the preview on IGN has got me leaning against it now. It seems a little slow, and I don’t want to shake the controller to brush a guy’s teeth etc.

  85. CarlB:

Don’t forget you can also tie your tie.

  86. Spideydog:

    Did you get a ps3 Harry ??

  87. phranctoast:

Comparing Computer vision to what Sony has been doing is akin as to saying Microsoft’s Live is irrelevant in discussion as Sony had an online infrastructure developed for its MMO’s. It’s apples and oranges and a dumb argument.

MS being the biggest software developer in the world has their fingers in a lot of pies.

It still doesn’t answer questions as the need to buy out the company that Natal originated from when MS was well versed due to computer vision.

Say what you want. The first console to use the Tech was a Playstation console and not an Xbox console, so even with the computer vision knowledge it stands as a good argument that it would still be PC only tech for MS otherwise.

And I still like the insults against a game for kids. Geeze…your 35+..of course the game is not for you…..

  88. Roca.:

I have to agree with Phranc on this topic.

  89. Sorral:

Yeah Pranc, I had that in mind because they are really aren’t using any of that stuff for natal and gaming, but it turned out that Softimage is no longer their’s anyway, which results in patent issues coming up.

  90. CarlB:

“Comparing Computer vision to what Sony has been doing is akin as to saying Microsoft’s Live is irrelevant in discussion as Sony had an online infrastructure developed for its MMO’s. It’s apples and oranges and a dumb argument.”

I wasn’t comparing it, I merely said Microsoft had been working with the tech (motion tracking, facial recognition, ocr, biometrics, voice recognition, etc.) long before the Eye. And yes, the first platform to use a motion tracking webcam was the PC. The flying monkey, however, is all Sony. If you can find a better, more recent example of how they have been utilizing the tech, by all means, mention it here.

  91. phranctoast:

The point I was making originally was there was no reason at all to compare the two (Natal and Eye Pet)

I know… I see.. Someone made an negative remark about Natal, and rather than arguing against the point with logic, you make a offhanded remark about eyepet (something not geared to you at all). There’s where the troll comment came from.

    This turns into
“Uh, yes, this looks ten times cooler (”phoney” or not) than the flying monkey in EyePet or anything the Eye has done to date.”

    This
“This article is about a game on the Natal, “EyePet” is the latest game on the Eye. It has been said in the past several times that Natal is nothing more than the Eye, so I thought it was a fair comparison to see the latest offerings/directon from each company on what is called by many here as the “same” tech.”

I guess “cooler” is where I got confused and labeled you troll.

This isn’t the first time I’ve been corrected in this instance. Maybe if you originally said what you meant rather than saying so after the label we’d actually see the intent.

Still think its a back peddling tactic and nothing more.

and Btw.. I admit when I troll if that topic needs addressing and gladly award myself FTOTT when appropriate. :)

  92. Roca.:

its funny all these talks about Eye Pet and the Flying Monkey.

the Flying monkey is basically Milo but instead of being a person is a Pet. that only proves that the Eye and Natal can do similar functionalities.

the Eye toy was also the first montion sensing device to bring exercising to gaming along with DJ, Dancing, music, party mini games and the ability to video chat on home consoles

  93. CarlB:

“I admit when I troll if that topic needs addressing and gladly award myself FTOTT when appropriate.”

Sorry, FTotT goes to Ghost IMO. “Flying Monkey” was just irresistable, and as you already know from the past, I just don’t think it’s right to nominate myself for awards, but I will gladly and happily accept it from you and everybody else here ;)

EyePet = Latest game on Eye
Geometry Wars here = Latest game reported on Natal

…and I still think it looks ten times cooler than the flying monkey or anything on Eye to date.

@roca, Milo has been pasted on practically every Natal article here, even when the article has nothing to do with Milo, funny how you haven’t seen the Flying Monkey here though.

  94. Roca.:

Eye Pet was release in EU a couple of months ago. GT5, RE5 Gold, Under Siege and LBP will be the latest on the Eye.

Milo is basicaly Eye Milo. the only different is that is not a PET but a humnan looking child

  95. Barnabe Jones:

    Geometry Wars?

So that pretty much confirms that motion controls are only going to be used for casual and mini games then.

  96. phranctoast:

And instead of being cute it’s creepy as hell.

    Uncanny Valley anyone?

  97. Roca.:

    welcome back BJ

but that video doesnt look impressive at all. as Spidey said it looks horrible and out of sync. I have read there is some lag with the motion input as it relies only on Gestures

  98. CarlB:

I agree, the lag that is there is not impressive. I was more impressed by the proof of concept and the beginning of this tech with this type of execution than anything else, including the game. Though I have to say, I’m not particularly looking forward to Symphony Hero (maybe Sign Language of the Dead?)… lol.

  99. Roca.:

I also noticed that Natal Capture montions at a frame rate of 30 hertz whereas the PS Eye captures montion at a frame rate of 60 hertz. this might explain the lag

  100. phranctoast:

The proof of concept is more impressive.

Maybe they simply don’t have the processing power in the 360 to translate gestures on screen in real time. It might just be tech where the concept is ahead of it’s time.

If they can’t get the lag issue dealt with it will be seen as a failure and put a bad taste in the mouthes of anyone else wanting to use similar tech in the future.
I can’t see MS releasing this unless it’s one to one.
    I guess time will tell.

  101. Ghost:

“And instead of being cute it’s creepy as hell.

    Uncanny Valley anyone?”

    How bout Chucky? lol

  102. CarlB:

“GT5, RE5 Gold, Under Siege and LBP will be the latest on the Eye.”

Wow. All those games will be Eye Games Roca? It will be interesting to see how they turn out.

“I can’t see MS releasing this unless it’s one to one.
    I guess time will tell.”

    Agreed.

  103. CarlB:

Here is another proof of concept without the “Atari Type/looking” game… Half-Life 2 to be more precise:

    http://www.n4g.com/tech/News-450226.aspx

Hey roca, you wouldn’t happen to have any video links to those games you mentioned above would you? Thanks.

  104. CarlB:

“Still, while the verdict may be out on how well Natal will handle first person shooters, it’s pretty darn cool to see a player control a complex game without a controller between them and the screen.”

    http://gizmodo.com/5436510/leak-half+life-2-playing-on-project-natal

  105. Sorral:

    @CarlB

HF2 controls with natal look familiar~?

    http://www.n4g.com/ViewComVideo.aspx?CID=3154943&BackUrl=/tech/NewsCom-450226.aspx

As someone said in n4g: imagine doing that for an hour or two.

  106. CarlB:

Yes, talked about this in an earlier thread, along with Children of Men and Mass Effect 2 trailer. I’ve ran a triathlon for 12 hours before (IronMan), I don’t think an hour or two of slight hand gestures (or even exaggerated arm waving as seen here) would be that tiresome.

  107. Roca.:

“Hey roca, you wouldn’t happen to have any video links to those games you mentioned above would you? Thanks.”

you can look it up your self (and then give your usual negative feedback). the GT5 video was on one of blorge’s thread. RE5 Gold was shown at TGS 09, so was LBP.

  108. CarlB:

Actually, I think it sounds kind of cool… thanks for the tip roca.

  109. CarlB:

    http://www.gtplanet.net/gran-turismo-5s-head-tracking-explained/

Looks great, even though he was mostly spinning out when he was using it… curious though, he said it is “TrackIR” and $130.00 how would this be incorporated, and is it just for head tracking?

  110. Roca.:

what are you talking about? all you need is the PS Eye and a copy of GT5

  111. CarlB:

Look at the second trailer towards the end and he describes Track IR and it’s price.

  112. CarlB:

I also noticed he had a concave tri-monitor setup… but even then it seems you still have to turn your head past the left and right ends of the display and look out the corner of your eyes… maybe they are working to minimize the angle necessary for movement to 5-10 degrees instead of 15-30? I wonder also if they have it able to work from the couch 7 feet away vice the 2-3 feet they depicted here…
