Saved game file will impact Mass Effect 2 minimally
Mass Effect 2 is slated to come out very shortly. With the release of the highly anticipated title on the horizon, more information about the highly discussed saved game feature has been revealed recently.
According to Joystiq, Mass Effect 2 community coordinator, Chris Priestly recently answered questions regarding the saved game import feature which has been cropping up on the official BioWare forums. Up to this point the details of this feature has been unclear.
According to Priestly the decisions you made in the first game will impact minor peripheral circumstances in Mass Effect 2, but will not affect the main story at all. Also, the leveled stats and abilities will be carrying over to ME2, but not in the way you think. Things get a bit hazy here as Priestly tries to explain that you will not be simply starting at your level capped stats from ME1, but will receive indirect bonuses such as extra loot or abilities when you start Mass Effect 2.
This makes sense as BioWare probably doesn’t want players to start out at some super high level in ME2. Mass Effect 2 is one of the games I have been looking forward to playing in 2010. I can’t wait to use my old saved game file on my Xbox 360 to continue the story in Mass Effect 2.

A friend of mine is playing through again in preparation for ME2.
He mentioned that you could carry over stuff but you’ll need to be at the the higher level to use it.
