SCE will let Sony corporation handle video game distribution going forward
With the recession impacting just about every company out there, Sony is trying to figure out ways to cut costs. One practice Sony has done in the past is keep distribution separate for Sony Computer Entertainment. This may all change soon.
There is no doubt about it; Sony is a massive company with over 180k employees all over the world. The company has a stake in assets valued at over $230 billion. When you own so much and have so many employees the overhead can be huge. This can in turn cut into the left over profits after everyone is paid from the janitors to the CEO.
To reduce costs Sony has announced that Sony Computer Entertainment distribution work will be handled via the existing corporate distribution foundation in place. This will help save costs by reducing redundancy. According to Sony, the parent corporation will handle distribution of video games and hardware (PSP, PS2 and PS3) from now on. This seem like a smart move, just wondering why it wasn’t thought of before.

Why Sony has so little communication between its own departments? Sony stores here in Veracruz don´t even sell card points for PSN. Those things are nowhere to find here and this is one of the bigger cities of the state.

I agree with Akaro there. but since last year Sony has been working hard on using all its assets to capitalize on its gaming business. in March 13, 2008 Sony merged SOE (Sony Online Entertainment)
(ps2.com.my/corporate/release/080314e.html) with the Playstation brand. before that SOE use to run their own thing apart from the Playstion market.
and now we’re seeing Sony Picture making movies about all the Playstation Blockbuster titles such as GoW and Uncharted. Sony Picture has been helping 1st party developers with some montion caputring tools (it all started with heavenly sword). they has also help the PSN video store become the online video store with the largest library on movies and tv shows. and in 2010 Sony plans to make their product/department more close to each other with its SOS (Sony Online Service)

Years ago, especially in the 90s, this is how Sony departments worked. Each one is like a standalone company. It is how the Japanese did it for a long time, it is what you would call the “Old Sony”.
Obviously this wasn’t working well anymore, lost the first place to Samsung, etc, so their Japanese CEO, Nobuyuki Idei, was replaced by Howard Stinger, to more or less change Sony’s structer into all working together, which is showing up now. One example comes to mind is GoW3 demo on distrct9 blu-ray disc, and another is announcing that PSN will be used accross the company not just the current gaming/movies.
The japanese people aren’t so good with changing, so hiring a foreginer to do it makes sense, since it will be easier for him to do it.
I don’t know why their store wouldn’t carry PSN cards. Maybe it is regional issue/laws unless they have the cards somewhere else easily in Mexico. Canada still doesn’t have video store on psn for example due to their law system causing issues.

Mike Ferro – i think you guys should do an article on the information that sony may be moving away from the “cell” and to the multi-core processor (as seen in the xbox 360) for the PS4.
then you can explain why that is if the “cell” is as great as you fanboys claim.

I agree with Roca & Sorral Sony’s should get it’s “act toghether”.
They have so many issues, many wrong things as a company from LCD TVs, Digital SLRs, PS3 to PSP Go.
Their brand name still commands sales but for how long?
Nissan motors hired a non Japanese guy to run it and it worked out allright.
Hope Sony follows.

Should make a exclusive music store for PSP, PSX and PS3 using MP3 and Atrac3plus format.

But I have to agree with him, both the PS3 and 360 are ancient by today’s gaming computer standards. (“old” is 1 year, “ancient” is 3-4). It doesn’t mean however that we won’t still see some outstanding games from both platforms though, and really, I was more impressed by games like Batman AA and Borderlands than the “prettier” ones.

back OT: it’s sad that sony is floundering so hard to get their act together. Maybe if they had a better understanding of the future of the gaming industry they would have been better positioned for this gen. Unfortunately with billions of dollars lost on the hardware, lowest ratio of software sold, PSN’s “FREE” online model being a failure, and sony’s willingness to abandon the “cell” proves the point sony really is out of their league competing with a gaming giant like MS.
oh well… on the plus side; their fanboys are the funniest (and dumbest) of the bunch.

same goes for PS1 and PS2. Sony went from using a “MIPS R3000A” CPU on the PS1 to the Emotion Engine on the PS2 to the Cell on the PS3.

Yes… it’s all only speculation right now. It would make sense from a dev standpoint though. That Sony still cannot afford to include the Emotion Engine from PS2 in PS3 years after launch (or even good emulation) is telling though, along with some devs still having problems with multiplatform games as well. They may not want to make the same mistake twice.

Most likely Sony will stick with the Cell Broadband Engine because is extremely powerful hard to code but worth the investment at the end. For now is just a rumor. And it will take a lot more then 10 years to see PS3 games aged.

SW… I know the Cell may not have been a good decision for PS3… but between it and the exclusive games Sony is selling (which do not sell that well even when they get excellent reviews)… I was thinking they may have inadvertently became a “B Corporation”… just reading this in the book “Drive” by Daniel H. Pink (outstanding book btw)… -”a designation that requires companies to amend their bylaws so that the incentives favor long-term value and social impact instead of short-term economic gain”… wishful thinking?
