Sega abandons hardcore Wii gamers

Sega abandons hardcore Wii gamersAnd there we were thinking Sega was going to try and cater to the hardcore Wii minority. But no, the company is turning its back on that admittedly small percentage of Wii owners who want to do more than play Wii Sports once a week. Make the most of MadWorld, The Conduit, and House of the Dead: Overkill as that’s probably going to be it.

There was something quite honorable about Sega’s desire to offer something different for Wii owners to play. The boss of the company derided the “flood of crap” on the console and responded by attempting to create a couple of games different than the usual Wii fare.

The problem is that none of these Sega games has been a huge hit, suggesting these just aren’t the kinds of games that will ever sell on the Wii. And according to Nintendo Everything, Constantine Hantzopoulos, a studio director at Sega, stated:

I have to say that it was a space that was open and we took a gamble on it. It’s like, ‘Wow, there’s no mature games on the Wii. Is there an audience out there?’ We did some research, it said there was an audience out there. I won’t comment about Nintendo, they did champion The Conduit as a ‘this is a Nintendo game.’ And, you know, I think they did okay by us. At the end of the day, I just think that you’re seeing kids are skewing much younger towards next-gen.

Anyone past 12 years old was playing 360 and PS3 shooters. And at that point, you can’t tell a 13 year-old, ‘But it’s on the Wii.’ Forget it, you know? That’s not what they see or hear.

Circling back to the whole mature Wii thing, again SEGA took a gamble, we put out some pretty decent content. I mean, House of the Dead: Overkill and MadWorld are great Wii games… they’re both doing okay and at the end of the day we’ll make our numbers. Are we going to do more mature titles for the Wii?.. Probably not.

I guess that means just one thing – that Sega is going to join the hundreds of other developers and publishers pushing out a “flood of crap” in the hope something sticks. As usual, it’s left to Nintendo to release the gems.

MadWorld is the worst game i have ever seen in my entire 11 years of gaming with the exception of all Xbox 360 exclusives.

MadWorld looks so terrible Sega is stupid to create such a weird ugly crappy trash.

    Hardcore Wii gamers?

More like hardcore gamers STUCK with a Wii. I’ve seen more hairless albino UNICORNS in my life than hardcore Wii gamers. Maybe not, but hairless albino unicorns DO exist, take my word for it…

But yeah, I don’t think that hardcore games have sold very well on the Wii, even with the giant user base. Correct me if I’m wrong, I’ve never taken a look at the sales for Overkill, MadWorld, etc.

Sega, Sega, Sega the King of Arcades.
Much as I love you, you are still plagued with the same old problems after all these years because of your stupidity and your inability to learn from your mistakes.
    My goodness!
What the heck are you doing on the Wii!?
Doing hardcore games on a play pen.
Get your ass out of there stay on the big boys’ consoles. Sega is will always be known for big brother’s games not sissy games.
I want some kick butt, hidef Streets of Rage 4!

Diluted? I am sure you know what you mean.

Anyhoo, back on topic. Sega are a shadow of their former selves. No big lose. No must have games. They should stick to arcade machines.

    Well Sega.

Re-texture the games, bump up the resolution, and basically do what I believe many developers will be doing next year.

Release your games as Wand ports.

    Low def-wii
    Hidef-PS3 wand.

I see the Wand also grabbing a lot of the wii shovel ware and any third party game that utilized the unique controller aspect.

True 1 to 1 with HD graphics. That could be cool for some people.

IMO, the Wands success/failure will be based off of companies doing this.

Sega was just trying to get money like EA which both fail with the Wii. Wii suck.
