PS3 to gain on Wii, Xbox 360 in 2010?
I’m sure I’ve heard the phrase, “the year of the PS3″ somewhere before, multiple times. But that is what analysts are now claiming for 2010, with the PS3 expected to gain on the Xbox 360 and Wii in terms of hardware sales. I’ll believe it when I see it.
The Wii started to slip in 2009, but still managed to outsell everything but its Nintendo brethren the DS. The PS3 and Xbox 360 generally battled it out in close formation throughout the year, with the ultimate sales figures depending on where you live in the world.
However, 2010 offers a whole new chapter in the console war, with all three manufacturers eager to increase sales and profit. According to Industry Gamers, Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian thinks this will be a good year for Sony and the PS3, a mediocre one for Microsoft and the Xbox 360, and a bad one for Nintendo and the Wii.
For the year, we are currently modeling a 10 percent increase in PS3 unit sales, Xbox 360 unit sales down 5 percent, and a 20 percent decline in Nintendo Wii unit sales.
Interestingly, Sebastian thinks all of this will result in one brilliant trend for the year: hardware price cuts. So if you haven’t yet acquired all three home consoles, 2010 could be your chance to do so.

Is not hard to believe that the PS3 is going to do awesome in 2010. Just loot at all the exclsuives plus Sony’s going to make more money and Xbox 360 basically has nothing and Wii is most definitely ready for death. 2007-2010 PS3 has been making hits ever since, if you have a PS3 you are a happy gamer. Finally a analyst that doesn’t need to be fired.

As much as people like to whine, 2009 was a PS3 year in terms of content. Great exclusive line-up, a price cut, and a Slim model. I’m not sure about sales. But as a gamer who does NOT own stocks in gaming, I would rather see more “gaming” than a silly sale number (which I won’t toss aside, everybody wants to see their favorite console sell well).
Isn’t Sony catching up in sales, anyways? Correct me if I’m wrong, but I heard that there was a gap in sales between the PS3 and 360, and that gap is now significantly smaller.
Early-to-mid 2010 looks Sony so far. I don’t know about the holiday season, though. I’m not sure when Natal is expected to be out, but that can easily put the Xbox back on top.

when the PS3 came out the 360 had a 10 Million units lead, the the PS3 managed to cut the lead to 7M.
last time I checked the lead was cut to 5 million and thats not even counting Dec’s sales number.

The Wii sold 3m units in the US last December and now it’s selling twice as many units as the PS3 on a weekly basis in Japan (after the FFXIII blip).
2010 will be the same as 2009.

Is everybody think here or what? For the ps3 to actually catch up with the Wii it has to outsell it on a regular basis. Last time I looked the Wii was still outselling it by quite a margin.
If the ps3 sold 50k and the Wii sold 200k one month and then the next month the ps3 sold 100k, its not catching the Wii. The gap is still getting bigger.
2010 = 2009, just like 2009 = 2008 etc…
If the Wii does start slowing down I would assume its because its reaching saturation point. And the 360 is nearing its 5 year life cycle so I expect to see it decline unless Natal grabs the public for next Xmas. ps3!?! I think it will have the odd sales spike when ever a MUST HAVE EXCLUSIVE comes out but its just not having the same success as the ps2.

Sony is destine to win always it shows. Also they are the only company that has 3 console on the market plus the only one that can last 10 years. Also Sony always introduces new disc technology from CD to DVD from DVD to Blu-ray Disc.

If these big companies have no choice but to jump on Sony’s BluRay bandwagon, what choice have us?
Nintendo and Microsoft jumped into Sony’s DVD ( even if they don’t mention it to their customers) and they made bazillions of bucks & gamers happy.
So what’s the problem?

Roca, I don’t hate PS3, it’s just too funny some of the things Ivan says about it that I can’t help but respond.
Wait a sec, how did I “skip” his comment or “twist” anything? I just said I was responding to yours, although I did read his as well, and I acknowledged that I have talked many times with you and others in the past about 360′s year head start… apparently you do not remember?
The end result is the same, 360 earned a lot of PS3′s marketshare by launching a year ahead of it. PS3 lost even more initial customers by launching a much higher price. Since then it has gained back customers like myself with more exclusives being released, a lower price, a redesign, trophies standard, and an improved PSN experience. 360 is still ahead in total sales (year head start), and if PS3 keeps it’s pace averaged it may match that lead shortly after the next gen starts in 2013.
There’s no hate there. Lose the fanboy shades already.

Phranc, I never said it was a “failed format”, though perhaps it did not take off as well as Sony thought it might, it certainly isn’t as successful as DVD or Blu-ray. The load times can suck on it, and I certainly prefer downloaded games compared to UMD games in that aspect. I didn’t mention Nintendo, but they seem to be having slightly more success with the DS than Sony is with the PSP.

There’s a lot that I like about the PS3. I like the idea of trophy levels over just achievements. I like the fact that it has a blu ray player. I can probably go on. But it also has it’s drawbacks, as does any machine.

If you love games this is one of your years PLAYSTATION 3 is jam packed with awesome hits. 2010 is gonna be fun i can tell. Also if you don’t own a PS3 you can still have fun just wait to get Alan Awake, i know i would love it as much as Heavy Rain. Only if Microsoft could bring a sequel to MechAssault for Xbox 360.

@Harry, I totally agree, the POS remarks may have held some weight with 360 years ago, but not today… I have problems with both (mainly getting kicked off PSN even in just the main screen on PS3, and 360′s hard drive prices/ots incompatibility), but also love each one’s games. Infamous is still my favorite btw… great game… are you able to get God of War Collection? Also, if you like the zombie action in L4D2 you might love it in Borderlands DLC, that game hits the mark on so many levels.
I read the column you were talking about on Heavy Rain and am not too worried and think it will be at least above average… what I like about these types of games is they try something different (at least from the mainstream) and experiment with different ideas, if not totally new ones. The end result may or may not be phenomenal, but at least it’s something bold and somewhat different, right?
Ivan, you don’t have to wait for Alan Wake, Mass Effect 2 is scheduled to be out before the end of the month.

I looked for anyone ripping into HDTV penetration in their criticism against blu ray. I do recall hearing it as well though. Came up short. I think it was either happy or CAD. Harry had his blu ray pot shots in the past but I don’t think it was him.

Just because BD may never live up to DVD’s proliferation, doesn’t eliminate it from being a viable, long term format.
Using only the original digital entry point into consumer home theatre as a measuring stick for BD, a format that was released into a far more diversified marketplace, is innacurate and misleading. But indeed, very handy if you just want to find reasons to rag on BD, which HH has an displayed to us his obssession with, ad nauseum.

This is changing fast. I like to rent movies now and then and the BR section is growing in the video store all the time. They are not going to remake every old movie on BR but as time goes on every movie is coming out on BR and more and more people (like me) only rent BR. The last time I was there BR was about 35% of the movie shelves.
I was there for DVDs as well and it took just as long for them to take over the video stores.
I think I’ll go this weekend to see how much more BR has taken over. I’ll let you know. Btw I rent at rogers video.

Roca, I know, but thanks. I was just hoping it would have come out by now (maybe along with a few other gamers) a couple of years into PS3′s lifecycle, or at least a couple of years after God of War II (as GoWII came out two years after GoWI), instead of 3 and a half (kind of like GT5). Excellence takes time though, right? Besides, it makes perfect sense: God of War I (Mar 2005), God of War II (Mar 2007, 2 years) God of War III (Mar 2010, 3 years). Also, it’s still not 2011, so I guess I should count myself lucky… lolam.

Don’t really see this as a shock. PS3 is a such a great value @ $299. The games are really getting quite good. Anyone who love games, is a true gamer and can really afford it should own both the PS3 and Xbox 360. You really would be missing out on some great experiences only having one or the other. I consider myself very lucky to be able to have the best of both worlds!
A little off topic but I went to see Avatar in 3D. Personally I did not think it was good… it was AMAZING! Happy Hockum, sorry but I have to strongly disagree with alot of your opinions about that movie, about 3D, and how Blu Ray could tie into that. 3D, I don’t see that as being a fad. Avatar was such a treat. I could never watch that movie in 2D, it would loose so much of it’s magic! Happy, I really have to wonder if your whole opinion on that movie, 3D and them bringing 3D quality like that home would be different if Microsoft had hold over BluRay!
I’m not near ready to buy some new fancy 3D capable TV. Perhaps in 5 years time I will be. If they are offering that kind of experience in the home for a decent price, I think there is a big future for 3D in movies and gaming! Avatar was almost 3 hours long and I didn’t want it to end. Saw a preview for more 3D movies and really am excited to see them as well. 3D is here to stay and a stepping stone to the amazing things they will come out with next in the future. I feel like a kid again going to the movies now a days. Don’t get me wrong, 3D alone does not make a great movie. Avatar was well done, it did not rely on just the pretty 3D effects. If anyone likes movies and have not seen Avatar yet, go see it…in 3D!

I think you have this all wrong.
Yes I will agree that Avatar was the best implementation and most convincing 3D I’ve yet seen – I’ve even recommended some of my family go and see it whilst it’s still around to experience it.

But my main point is that effects, no matter how impressive in themselves, do not themselves make for a great movie and/or great story telling, that’s simply a fact.
Secondly, and in relation to 3D especially, expecting people to watch their ordinary or regular TV (whatever soaps they are into or just several hours of a nights viewing) with 3D glasses on is unrealistic and isn’t going to happen.
3D is simply irrelevant to most TV output and with current flat panel TVs could be seriously distracting and diminish the entire effect
(that’s the ‘looking into a small diorama’ effect I was talking about before)
Once you accept that then automatically right there you just chopped away 3D to an occasional option, not a mainstream part of TV watching, for those that can be bothered.
Plus there’s the glasses thing which no matter how many stand up and say it doesn’t bother them there are plenty who do.
Of course it has to be remembered that a hugely expensive and very glossy one-off movie in a movie theatre is different – but that hardly ‘breaks’ a whole new tech in the home and ensures it takes off with all your relatives (especially the ones not 30 or younger).
I expect the tech for this to simply become part of the spec for new HD TVs.
So it will, slowly, very slowly, bleed into the market.
I do not see it being a spec most people go out and look for.
Everyone who has bought an HD TV to date (and it really is just about every single set sold to date) is hardly going to be thrilled to find out they need a new one – a new one which for almost every brand isn’t even out yet.
Now, I don’t know about you but Avatar is in the process of having been and will shortly be gone.
Where’s the steady stream of the next 3D movies with a 1/2 billion $ effects budget from a director with talent?
I would be saying the same thing if Microsoft had brought this out and was touting it as the next big thing btw

I’m old enough to have seen 3D come and go several times – and whilst older versions of 3D in a side-by-side comparison don’t look as good as today’s one does back then we didn’t have that comparison and the 3D movies were considered spectacular and very impressive too.
The real thing going on here is the fanboy element get star-struck by almost every new item of shiny-shiny.
No biggee, and not to patronise, it’s just simply that’s what youngsters are like and do.
Most adults over a certain age aren’t quite so easily impressed, we’ve seen it loads of times before
(as in a constant stream of the latest new impressive shiny-shiny, if not the actual article in question).
99 times out of 100 it usually turns out to be a load of cr@p which doesn’t quite deliver on its promise in the home & which we didn’t really need afterall.
Try not to get too disappointed once you discover the truth of this.

Glad you enjoyed Avatar and have told others to go see it. I agree with you that 3D is not meant for all aspects of visual media. I do however think there is and will be a future for it in gaming and movies. Yes I agree that the glasses for 3D are something that does need to change in order to make it appealing to more people. As Liquid just said above me I think they will be able to achive this with some sort of framless design or without glasses at all.

That would call for a push behind making the majority of movies and shows designed with 3d in mind as well.*

It’s likely just as many people would be decrying it as praising it here if Microsoft had hold over the movie, 3D, and bringing 3D quality to the home. As it is Sony doesn’t have hold of it, though it could impact Blu-ray standalone sales significantly. 20th Century Fox has the movie, LG has a larger stake in 3DTV’s than Sony at present, and several electronics, software, and computer manufacturers are working on bringing 3D quality to the home, not just Sony.

Considering one just needs the glasses and a pc w/software with several new and existing tv’s (approximately $1000 entry point), I think it will be a very short time until “3D boxes” (similar in form factor to Roku) come out. I still don’t think these, or true 3DTV’s, will be mainstream anytime soon, but we will see a lot more of this by the end of the year, it’s not going away.

If it was just a blu-ray player, I could see your point (but even then it’s not as exorbitantly overpriced as say, a 360 hard drive upgrade), but it is a game console as well, and it’s exclusives are worth the time and money spent on a second console, for me at least… and it seems Harry as well. I’m not a fanboy of PS3 (or 360) by any means, but I do enjoy great games, and the PS3 has several you cannot play on 360.
