December NPD: Revenge of the PS3 and Wii dominance continues

January 15, 2010

December NPD: Revenge of the PS3 and Wii dominance continues The December NPD numbers are finally out showing a strong December 2009. Surprisingly, hardware sales was actually up by 16 percent year-over year despite the recession.

The Xbox 360 and PS3 play musical chairs once again in December switching positions for the number two spot out of the home consoles.

See below for the hardware sales numbers:

Wii: 3.81 million
Nintendo DS: 3.31 million
PlayStation 3: 1.36 million
Xbox 360: 1.31 million
PSP: 654,700
PlayStation 2: 333,200

The Wii pretty much owned every platform on the market with its massive steroid induced sales. While the PS3 took the number two spot with 1.36 million units sold, which apparently is the biggest sales month the PS3 has had in the U.S. to date. The Xbox 360 was not far behind with 1.31 million units on the heels of the PS3.

The most surprising news from the NPD report is that the PS2 sold 333k units. It boggles the mind that the old little unit is still selling strong in its tenth year. With game releases trickling down good games are few and far between. Although, gamers can still pick up good releases such as Silent Hill: Shattered Memories only on the PS2, PSP and Wii this year.

Apparently Sony is feeling rather good about its sales figures as it sent out a rather neatly packaged sales data sheet in the email today.

Take a look below:

image

An interesting highlight from the datasheet reveals that the Playstation brand accounted for a sizable 26 percent (5.1 billion) out of the total  2009 video game industry revenue in the US alone. This is out of pretty much everything in the industry ranging from hundreds of third party studios, to nuts and bolts like accessories and hardware.

I still haven’t received anything from Microsoft yet. I will put up Microsoft’s end of the year data sheet as soon as I receive it.

If you want to look at a good example of a system seller it would have to be New Super Mario Brothers Wii. Since that game was released Wii sales has been huge.

Let’s hope GT5 does the same for PS3.

  2. Ghost:

Damn 5.1 billion is alot of cash. I’m glad they had a good year hopefully 2010 will be even better? If Sony made that much then I bet M$ made at least 10 billion or more this year? I can’t believe the PS2 is still selling like that either. But what really blows my mind is how the fuckin Wii and DS is still kicking ass? Surely every kid and woman has bought one by now??? They must be sending Wii salesman’s to every nursing home around the globe to peddle that shit on our unsuspecting elderly? :D

  3. oldschool1987:

Where’s Kev and CAD? I wanna hear their ‘excuses’ why the PS3 is outselling the 360 recently.

  4. harry sachz:

50,000 units? Well bully for them! Hardly revenge, but at least they won last month.

  5. Spideydog:

Agreed Harry, though MS would have a slightly bitter taste in it’s mouth to be in 3rd spot (being so used to being in 2nd spot in all)

Be interesting to see how they respond. A close battle is what we ALL like to see :)

  6. Ivan_PSP:

Nice Sony is kicking ass and wow the PS2 is still going strong that’s %100 profit. Why do people buy Nintendo’s shit is garbage wow the world is not as smart i guess or they love the Nintendo junk. Kudos to Sony corp. for having awesome sales and more awesome games coming monthly.

“REVENGE of the PS3″… Wow. That was it? A redesign, price drop, bundles, 2 GotY, better marketing, etc. and all it did was have a grand total of ONE third party game in the top ten best selling games for the entire month, the 50,000 more units they sold are still taking a loss, the top three best selling games for it are third party, the top one selling nearly a third as much more worldwide on 360 in total sales, and COD World at War Map Packs dominate PSN, despite all the studios Sony has at it’s disposal? Uncharted 2 and Demon Souls, both awarded GotY for 2009, don’t even make a showing, how disappointing… oh well, they were still great games:

The thread was about hardware sales, not software Carl ….

On the hardware front, it was a revenge of the PS3 with a 92% growth rate.

If you REALLY want to talk about software, it’s the Wii that totally dominated in those figures ;)

  9. Ivan_PSP:

Sony’s on a roll can’t be stop is a stampede. Sony’s truly the best people are noticing again.

“The thread was about hardware sales, not software Carl…”

The topic is December NPD sales… I found it humorous software sales were mysteriously not mentioned when they are on every other site.

Isn’t software sales what console manufacturers make the most money off of anyway?

If you REALLY want to talk about software, a 360 title took the top spot for the entire year, despite it’s being released in November, though Wii did take the majority of other spots:

“Below is the top 10 selling console titles of 2009, with the title’s platform and release month:

    1. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2* – Xbox 360 – November 09
    2. Wii Sports Resort w/ Wii Motion Plus* – Wii – July 09
    3. New Super Mario Bros. Wii – Wii – November 09

  12. CAD:

Where’s Kev and CAD? I wanna hear their ‘excuses’ why the PS3 is outselling the 360 recently.

2 months for the entire year and December was so close. Really Oldschool are you that pathetic? Did you forget that the PS3 is now competitively priced? What do we send these children to school for?

I Fully agree!! Amazing how Modern Warfare 2 sold the most on 360 for all of 2009. That is just mind blowing considering it’s a November release.

  14. CAD:

Wow even a Xbox Exclusive made to the Top 10. Congrats ODST. I can’t wait for Halo Reach Beta.

  15. CarlB:

“the Xbox 360 had a great year in 2009 with it outselling the Playstation 3 in addition to leading third-party software sales and software attach ratio (a record 8.8). The Xbox 360 generated $4.8 billion in total consumer spending (hardware, software and accessories sales combined)”

    http://www.examiner.com/examiner/x-6894-Video-Game-News-Examiner~y2010m1d14-Aaron-Greenberg-responds-to-December-NPD-results

So 360 and it’s software (4.8B) basically sells about as much as PS3, PS2, PSP, and all that respective software (5.1B) combined? Wow.

  16. CarlB:

“Modern Warfare’s cumulative sales total breaking the $1 billion mark in just two months on shelves. To put that into some perspective, that’s nearly as much as the entire US console and handheld gaming industry brought in for the month of October.”

  17. Spideydog:

Cmon Carl stop splitting hairs ….. the story itself was centered around Hardware. You turned it into a software debate.

You seem to be vigorously defending the 360, when there is no need to. It was only outsold by 50,000 units, nothing to really sing about.

At the end of the day, the Wii is still trouncing both the 360 and ps3 on all fronts :)

  18. Ivan_PSP:

What ever makes your empty exclusive games happy. We PS3 will be enjoying all our exclsuives good luck waiting for Splinter Cell: Conviction a Ubisoft owned game. And yes wait for Halo Reach or or Halo 3. in a half.

Games make me happy not sales but yes sales are very important to Microsoft Sony and Nintendo. The Xbox 360 without multi-plaform support would be dead if console rely only on first party and second party games. Xbox will have Microsoft game division bankrupt. Halo alone can do everything. I know many of you that the own a PS3 can’t argue about games since you barely have any so you look for other crap how sad. We all know PS3 is the best.

  19. Ivan_PSP:

    Halo along cannot do everything.
I would love for the Xbotic people to compete with quality. I won’t bother naming Sony’s games they are just highly awarded all of them.

Splinter Cell: Conviction is going to be on PS3 faster with all the problems Ubisoft is having financially. Sony has secure they console in everything especially games and hardware power. Xbox 360 is dated as hel.

  20. Ivan_PSP:

Conviction was originally announced on May 23, 2007 when Ubisoft released a trailer for the game. It depicted a more rugged-looking Sam with long hair and a fully-grown beard. He had the ability to blend in with the environment, interact with tables and chairs and utilize hand-to-hand combat against enemies. The lighting and shadow effects also showed a vast improvement over Double Agent. The game was due for release on November 16, 2007.

However, the game missed its initial launch date, and on May 19, 2008, Xbox World 360 magazine reported that Splinter Cell: Conviction was “officially on hold” and that the game had been taken “back to the drawing board”. While Ubisoft never confirmed this, they announced that the game had been pushed back to the 2009-10 fiscal year (ending March 31, 2010). The reasons for the delay were never revealed, but it is thought that the gameplay was too similar to another of Ubisoft’s franchises, Assassin’s Creed, which was released in 2007 and involved blending in with an interactive crowd.

The game resurfaced at E3 2009, with a completely new visual style and a more casual-looking Sam. The developers confirmed that the “new” Conviction had been in development since early 2008, commenting that “the gameplay has evolved a lot” and “the visual direction is simply much better.”

The game was given a November 2009 release date at E3, but was later pushed back to the first quarter of 2010. After initially announcing a release date of February 23, 2010, Ubisoft delayed the game again until April 2010. The delay was attributed to the game requiring “a bit more polish”.

  21. CarlB:

“the story itself was centered around Hardware.”

Why are you getting all defensive over the mention of software sales when discussing NPD? They go hand in hand with hardware sales every month, nothing new there. C’mon Spidey stop being so sensitive. The story itself mentioned 5.1B generated in revenue, which includes software sales.

I thought it was interesting that 360 managed to clearly beat PS3 in software sales, let alone have the best selling title of 2009. Also nearly matching total revenue with only one console compared to Sony’s 3 platforms as well. And it’s good to a Wii title is no longer in the number one spot to boot. ;)

The 360 “generated $4.8 billion in revenue in 2009, down slightly from $5.0 billion in 2008 and $5.1 billion the year before. For third-party game sales, however, the brand remains extremely strong, generating $2.4 billion, or 43 percent of the industry’s third-party game revenues in 2009.”

    gamasutra.com/view/news/26825/Microsoft_Xbox_360_Reaches_39M_Units_88_Tie_Ratio.php

Sony seems to be down the most from last year though:

“The company also announced that the PlayStation brand overall, including hardware and games for PlayStation systems, generated $5.1 billion in revenue overall, comprising 26 percent of total industry revenue. That figure actually represents a year-on-year decline, however. In 2007, PlayStation brand revenue was $6.2 billion, representing 35 percent of industry revenue, and in 2008 revenue rose slightly to $6.4 billion as market share declined to 30 percent.”

I wish we could see something like NPD in Europe.

It looked to me like the USA got the best PS3 deals this X-mas in the USA.
In Europe it was the reverse and the Xbox Elite deals were incredible.

50,000 units is, a ‘win’ yes, but hardly much to be crowing about.

Just as we saw in 2008, Sony have improved their positioning and upped sales but what happens next with Microsoft (and Nintendo) will be key.
Sony made their move, now we await the counter-move.

  24. Liquid:

how come when the xbox sells more all the xbox faggots are celebrating but when the ps3 outsells the shitty little xbox carlB quicly rushes in about software sales? he doesnt even discuss the topic on hand he just runs in and basically says ” but. . . but the 360 beats ps3 in software sales! who cares about hardware sales ” blah blah blah usual xbot shit, they goto all lenghts to make out the 360 is best

  25. phranctoast:

“It looked to me like the USA got the best PS3 deals this X-mas in the USA.

The 360 got it’s better deals in November (Amazon $100 gift card, Walmart $100 gift card) which must of increased their number for that month. Either that or the 1 million people banned helped contribute.

It is odd that they didn’t almost double their November number which seems like the norm for nov-dec. Sony did.

It looks like the true “system seller” is price. It’s nice that the PS3 is finally competitively priced.

PLEASE READ THIS SHIT I WROTE LoL.

    Roca.:
So true. I myself stop responding directly to him for that same reason i still read his comments.

It doesn’t really matter it Microsoft sells are awesome or terrible well at least not to us gamers. We only get to enjoy games. That’s the only thing that matters and Sony got the best exclusives. The only exclusive i will be buying for my Xbox 360 is Alan Awake but that’s far off also i paid in full for Halo Reach when i paid for MAG and God of War III Ultimate Edition damn i need Heavy Rain. The Xbox this month has Mass Effect 2 which is not that bad. But Microsoft needs at lot more exclusives they barely have anything. Microsoft needs to invest in more gaming studios like Sony always does. Sony will soon pass EA and Activision as the leader in video game sales. Also Nintendo has many studios which they hardly use which is fucking retarded.

I have no idea why CarlB cares so much about how Microsoft corp does. I know we should care all gamers but still the thing that really matters is the games and Microsoft is well far far behind. Also most of the exclusives they got are not own by them.

    Left4Death – Valve
    Mass Effect – Bioware/EA
Gears of War – Epic Games
    Splinter Cell: Conviction – Ubisoft
    Saints Row – Toy Head-Quarters

Sony owns all their exclusive basically with the exception of some rare ones. Once those companies need more profit they will make it for PS3 or when the contract ends unless Microsoft decides to write more checks.

Sony is sneaky as hell the main point they do this 10 year life span is to compensate for any losses they have. Like the DS is selling way better then PSP is but that doesn’t mean Sony is doing bad with it. Sony already made all the money they spend on PS2 ages ago. But they still counts as losses maybe because they only use the PS3 money. Also PlayStation Home helps them also the PS1 games.

Also to repair a fucking PS3 cost $150 Sony is making profit there too. To send and get back a PS3 basically from anywhere in the USA is like $44 and maybe to repair $50 or a little bit more.

Sony is doing fine and Microsoft is doing fine for now too they make money from repair and Xbox Live plus the content and the high price peripherals they sell to us. Nintendo is doing good too selling console but i bet they are not getting much profit from the Wii they might be getting just $50 per console sold which yes is better then Sony LoL for now. All i know Sony is waiting to kill the competition soon.

All three companies are doing great some better then others. Sony is the last one in sells yes so. This year we all know they are going to be 2nd and with the long lifespan maybe one day first.

  29. phranctoast:

Annual NPD Console sales were in the 360′s favor in 2009.

    360: 4,767,000
    PS3: 4,331,000

If the difference between NPD is only around 400K+ could it be possible for the PS3 to have outsold the 360 worldwide in 2009?

  30. Roca.:

    Anual Worldwide sales:

    PS3: 12,844,794 (+31%)
    360: 10,595,679 (-1%)

Where exactly am I getting defensive/sensitive about software sales Carl? I made it pretty clear in my posts that software sales for 360 AND ps3 were getting smashed by Wii (more so ps3), I certainly didn’t feel the need to go and make excuses. In my book, that’s not being defensive or sensitive ??

Good attempt at trying to turn my argument back on myself m8, but FAIL. (all in good fun)

I almost feel like Carlb’s original post should have started with a “Not to Rain on Sony’s parade but……”

It’s all good. Theres alway 2010. With more hardware sales comes more software sales.

What Sony needs to do now is have the Wand beat Natal out of the box. Just lets hope that doesn’t translate into poor hardware dependability ;)

Another random selection of words from that great poet Ivan.

But you are right Ivan, all 3 companies are doing well. But in a more real sense, Nintendo is REALLY well and sony is not.

They have just managed to scrape past the older less powerfull 360 but to do that they had to prostitute the ps3′s ass out to the cheapest disease riddled “Johns” they could find.

  37. Barnabe Jones:

Wow look at how many copies of the COD map packs were sold in 2009. Bobby Kottick should put that in his pipe and smoke it.

Personally I think the series is nothing but hype and marketing, forcing fans to buy map packs and new installments every month.wrong.

Wow, Nintendo just keeps on goin don’t they?

I’m actually quite happy for them. They’ve had the guts to try something new, and it’s worked big time in thier favour.

I wonder if Sony/MS follow suit with their next consoles, with their own ideas of course.

Actually quite surprising to see the PS2 still selling so well. Kinda indecates how good a console that was/is.

“I wonder if Sony/MS follow suit with their next consoles, with their own ideas of course.”

I’m pretty sure Nintendos success assured us that all future consoles will now come with some sort of motion control out of the box.

  42. Ivan_PSP:

People buy the Wii and a second later are wishing for a fucking PS3 but the damn problem is that now they waste the money and they can’t get a PS3. Which sucks for Sony and even us gamers. That’s exactly what happen to my idiot uncle he got a Wii plus like $400 of extra crap then he saw my other uncle’s PS3 and wanna to sell the Wii for $200 he ended it giving everything away for free. Dumb shit LoL. He told me to take it i said no so many times.

The main problem is that Sony is cheap. They built the best gaming console and the best games but they don’t advertise or cared for that shit. Which is fucking stupid on their part. Their marketing is a joke is just pathetic and bad for business really bad. If Sony was good doing ads the PS3 would have been at least second or even close to !st again like last generations.

  43. MisterX:

    Virus

“Actually quite surprising to see the PS2 still selling so well”

It could very well mean that since PS3 has no BC and there’s tons of games for PS2, makes sense that PS2 sales is up. I would think if you owned ps2 games then ultimately the argument where ps3 has free wifi and blu ray pointless because you have to buy ps2 console.

  44. Roca.:

a used PS2 cost as much as a brand new a 360 game. Wifi and Bluray cost way more dude.

  45. MisterX:

I was not talking about used ps2 on my last post because used ps2 is not considered sales, am I right? wireless B, G or N varies in prices. As far as Blu Ray drive as PC component I saw it drop at Frys for ±$100 – 150.

  46. Roca.:

but it still doesnt change the fact that if you own a PS3 and have PS2 games you can always get a used PS2 for about as much as the XBL subscription cost

  47. MisterX:

your point being that getting a ps2 is the same as XBL which means getting a ps2 is about a choice whether to get it or not which identical to XBL whether or not xbox owner wants to get it

  48. Roca.:

my point was that BC is not a big deal when you can get it for about as much as a XBL subscription fee, the only different is that PS2 is a one time purchase and the XBL subscription is a yearly fee

  49. phranctoast:

I’m surprised also by the high PS2 sales…but it is the month of Christmas, and it only cost $100 and has an insane amount of games out for it…….

BC is great and all, but I can’t recall the last time a PS2 game found it’s way into my PS3. The odd thing, I have some PS2 games given to me by people that I still have yet to play. ZOE2, JAX2, and XIII come to mind.

  50. MisterX:

    lol

It was saying “it could very well mean about ps3 and the BC”. In fact you are the one comparing it to PS2 and XBL. If that’s your opinion about BC not being important at all, I respect that, but you also have to realize that I got attack from you because I think ppl buy ps2 because PS3 has no BC

  51. MisterX:

i wouldn’t say attack but instead respond to my post to Virus

  52. Roca.:

“In fact you are the one comparing it to PS2 and XBL.”

you compared BC to wifi and Bluray lol…

  53. kev:

wow…that makes 4 monts out of 24 that the ps3 outsold the 360 in the largest market…. strike up the band, start the parade!!! LMAO!!!

it’s funny that ps3 fanboys only care about NPD when the ps3 does good… *sigh*

the price drop of the ps3 had a lot to do with this since it dropped at the end of november….

  54. MisterX:

    I said argument not comparing

  55. kev:

Congrats to the wii!! that’s a lot of sales….

  56. CarlB:

“its a big Win for Sony if you compare Dec 2008 sales vs Dec 2009″

Well Roca, that would be very true if that single month reflected the year’s performance. Unfortunately it did not:

    Sony 2007 revenue $6.2 Billion (35% marketshare)
Sony 2008 revenue $6.4 Billion (30% marketshare) vs.
    Sony 2009 revenue $5.1 Billion (26% marketshare)

One month of better sales is hardly a “big win” considering they lost a quarter of their marketshare and made $1.3 Billion less than last year for the entire year.

    http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/26819/Sony_PS3_Sells_135M_Units_In_December_US_Up_87.php

I would love to see Sony make a comeback though to regain the position they had just two years ago with marketshare, as it would fund even more great exclusives.

“it’s funny that ps3 fanboys only care about NPD when the ps3 does good”

Apparently even then only the half (hardware sales) that gives it a rosy spin, heaven forbid you mention the rest of the story in software sales, let alone talk about the entire year.

  57. phranctoast:

    @CarlB

I believe the recession hurt the sales revenue a little bit.

That, and the ps2 has been selling less and less and the ps3 more and more. We know the ps3 is still costing them money. The PS2 passing the reigns to the PS3 is the biggest factor imo.

I’d be interested to see how both consoles did worldwide in both sales and revenue. You know….for shits and giggles :D

  58. Roca.:

“its a big Win for Sony if you compare Dec 2008 sales vs Dec 2009″

that is hardware sales which is what this article is about…you are reaching too far now…relax the 360 was just 50K units behind, there is not need for you to keep trying to put MS on top.

My god, you haven’t played ZOE2 yet? Leave all of your current games and go play it! seriously! I don’t know how many times I replayed that game over and over to beat my own record, it was just so good.
I wish that Kojima would start on ZOE3 for the PS3 already.

    @Carlb
I have never really given much of thoughts to NPD numbers, simply because they show the US market only.
Pretty much looking at half the picture.
Also, I don’t think that the world involves the US either.

You should do some research about the numbers around the world, other than the UK, if I remember correctly, the 360 is pretty much behind the PS3 in hardware and more than likely software.

If the PS3 was ahead of the 360 in US, even by that small 50k consoles, where this is the 360′s strongest market, how do you think it is doing everywhere else? ;) Also see what I did here?

  60. phranctoast:

Well, it’s definitely proof that the price drop and redesign in September is helping the PS3 out a lot.

December 2008 to December 2009 sales for the 360 are down though.

    360 2008: 1.44 million
    360 2009: 1.31 million

  61. phranctoast:

    @Sorral.

I know. I hear it all the time. I hardly have the time to finish some of my current games.. It’s killing me ;)

  62. SW:

Does anyone else think we’re about overdue to a ‘The wii is going to fail!!!!!!’ article? ;)

  63. phranctoast:

    lol @SW.

Definitely. Lets get to it Mike/Dave.

  64. Roca.:

Nintendo sold more units than the PS3,360, PSP & PS2 combined

  65. CarlB:

    @phranc,

No doubt the recession was a factor, but the quote reflects marketshare as well… do you mean PS3′s higher price was involved for them losing so much marketshare? I totally agree, but I think the new pricing should do a lot to alleviate that, as long as the recession doesn’t get even worse.

“I’d be interested to see how both consoles did worldwide in both sales and revenue.”

PS3 totally whipped 360′s ass for the year in hardware according to VGC, by about 2.3M.

All GS said about worldwide was that there is a 39M install base for 360… nothing on PS3 yet. VGC estimates 65.6M Wii’s worldwide, 31.8M in PS3′s, 37.2M 360′s. Round up both with the same difference the 360 has on GS (1.8M), and it’s:

    Wii – 67.4M
    360 – 39M
    PS3 – 33.6M

For the year’s worldwide hardware sales on VGC:

    Wii – 22M
    PS3 – 12.9M
    360 – 10.6M

For total worldwide software sales VGC has:

    Wii – 445M
    360 – 337M
    PS3 – 207M

  66. CarlB:

“you are reaching too far now”

LOL… by what? Quoting actual NPD numbers in an NPD article? So it’s okay to quote revenue, but not about where the majority of that revenue actually comes from? Please.

  67. phranctoast:

“No doubt the recession was a factor, but the quote reflects marketshare as well… do you mean PS3’s higher price was involved for them losing so much marketshare? I totally agree, but I think the new pricing should do a lot to alleviate that, as long as the recession doesn’t get even worse.”

Pretty much. I also think that there are less ps2 sales and the ps3 finally just started to pick up the slack.

  68. Roca.:

“do you mean PS3’s higher price was involved for them losing so much marketshare?”

do you know anything about math?
it’s basic math to acknowledge the fact that the bigger the Wii unit lead gets from the PS3/360 the bigger the Wii marketshare is going to be and because of it the PS3/360 marketshare will only get lower

I did the math for the consoles market share based on your numbers above

    Wii = 47.85%
    360 = 27.85%
    PS3 = 24.30%

you also stated that the PS3 marketshare was 26% which means the PS3′s total units are higher than 33.6

  69. Saber_HAHAha:

    I still fail to see who would want to buy a $200 Wii over a $300 360/PS3. Hardware-wise, games-wise, and value-wise, it is NOT 2/3 of it’s 2 competitors.

Why am I finding it so difficult to find worldwide numbers?

  70. CarlB:

“do you know anything about math? it’s basic math to acknowledge the fact that the bigger the Wii unit lead gets from the PS3/360 the bigger the Wii marketshare is going to be”

Yes, which is why I already mentioned this earlier above in the first place. I wasn’t talking about PS3 hardware either alone either (though it is doing outstanding when compared to 360 worldwide as I also already mentioned above), but rather total revenue marketshare for the Playstation brand, as I quoted earlier, down from 35% in 2007 to 26% in 2009, and I already acknowledged Nintendo took the lions share of the market away from Sony in that same period.

“you also stated that the PS3 marketshare was 26% which means the PS3’s total units are higher than 33.6″

Pay attention roca and please read what I say. Before you go spouting off about other people’s math, check your basic reading and comprehension skills:

    “Sony 2009 revenue $5.1 Billion (26% marketshare)”

Is quoted from the GS article I linked above, and is for TOTAL Sony Playstation brand revenue (including PSP, PS2, PS3 hardware AND Software), NOT PS3 hardware alone (this is also mentioned in the article here).

    Revenge of the PS3???

Nah, that is too much of a word IMHO. Just like the other terms they use to exagerrate the headlines.

The video games industry is not the only battlefield sony is engaged at there is the movie industry & the music industry for this matter.
With great power comes great responsibility and with that sony had a bigger threat it needed to solve before minding the likes of Wii, DS, 360 & PC.
The bigger threat’s name is PIRACY.
Piracy threatens video game, movie and music industries as a whole.
The PS1 & the PS2 proved that Sony can deal with Nintendo & Microsoft any time.
The PS3 & BluRay had to deal with piracy first for the long term benefits with enthusiastic support from responsible companies like Panasonic, Samsung, Sharp, Toshiba etc.
The video game industry competition had to wait.
Nintendo and Microsoft have tried but done nothing substantial to at least keep the pirates at bay or even touch thier consoles.
In fact their consoles are moved by millions of pirated softwares at a certain extent wether they like it or not.
Nintendo tried with the Gamecube but it failed miserably even to the point of losing to Xbox.

The 360 banning is aggainst modding not piracy but no one can deny that the 360 is one lucky basterd ^_^.

With the PS3 is a different story.

So don’t be surprised if the next PSP,XBOX,Wii will have a certain type of BluRay optical medium to combat piracy.
I have yet to see a pirated PS3 game being sold in the HongKong or the Philippines.
But if Nintendo will go the cheap-ass route again just to make money then the 3rd party developers will screw them!

As for me PS3 is doing very well with decent legitimate software and hardware momentum worthy of the title as industry leader.
The PS3 & BluRay’s great contribution to these industries as a whole for the past 3 years is already a success.

    Have a nice day everybody.

  79. CarlB:

“In fact their consoles are moved by millions of pirated softwares at a certain extent wether they like it or not.”

And yet they still managed to sell 100M-200M+ more units in additional software when compared to PS3. Interesting.

  80. Ivan_PSP:

LoL He’s crazy i tell you this Xbotic are all retards full of fantasy and shattered dreams.

  81. CarlB:

Hey Ivan, check this out… nice bit of kit, and there’s even a chance it will be PSP compatible:

Here we go again. Who cares about the US numbers?

  83. ncaissie:

I Like the US but they are not the end all be all.

  84. Ivan_PSP:

    ncaissie:
I care about worldwide numbers only.

  85. CarlB:

“I care about worldwide numbers only.”

“total worldwide software sales VGC has:

    Wii – 445M
    360 – 337M
    PS3 – 207M”

“100M-200M+ more units in additional software when compared to PS3. Interesting.”

  86. oldschool1987:

^^ Is that the real numbers Carl? Shit, the PS3 is catching up quick. Closer than I thought.

  87. Ivan_PSP:

    oldschool1987:
This year Sony’s coming to 2nd place.

  88. CarlB:

@OS, estimates from VGC at least, but that is from the launch of each console, years ago, to today. Averaged:

    Wii 148M/yr
    360 84M/yr
    Sony 69M/yr

Sony isn’t catching up, they are falling behind, considering they are not selling as many software units per year and they lost almost 10% of their market share over the last two.

  89. oldschool1987:

@ Carl: Your probably right, I don’t understand the numbers. There just America ain’t they? People are too stubborn when it comes to getting a PS3 I reckon. It’s got some amazing games but they’re stuck in the Xbot fanclub. People like Kev and CAD.

At least you went and got a PS3 and say good things about it.

  90. ncaissie:

Funny how you post SW and not HW numbers. Estimates at that.

  91. Ivan_PSP:

    oldschool1987:
The PS3 is on American soil were most people are biased towards Xbox, since Microsoft is American. GameStop being the most biased. The true godfather of video gaming will always be Sony’s PlayStation. Did he really buy a PS3 i added him but it looks fishy.

  92. CarlB:

    @OS,

    “There just America ain’t they?”

    Nope, Worldwide.

    @NC,

“Funny how you post SW and not HW numbers.”

Look above where I posted HW numbers already.

    @Ivan,

The PS3 on Japanese soil sells better as well, so what’s your point? PS2 used to be the top seller and first place in the US, now it’s last. The “true father” of videogaming title is usually given to Ralph Baer, but if you want to get real technical it’s Willy Higinbotham or Steve Russell, noob.
