Fils-Aime: Wii 2 not just “HD”
There is no Wii HD, at least according to Reggie Fils-Aime. But a Wii 2? Probably, possibly, just don’t hold your breath.
The Wii is still doing phenomenally well in all major territories. A quick look at the NPD results for December shows that. But that hasn’t stopped people, including myself, speculating that Nintendo will soon be launching a follow-up. It looked for a while as though the only argument was over its name, with the Wii 2 and the Wii HD being the front-runners.
The Wii HD was speculated to be a soon-to-arrive improved version of the current console, with high-definition graphics being one of the few noticeable improvements. Despite some analysts remaining convinced it was on its way, Nintendo America president, Reggie Fils-Aime denied it in November.
Now, in an interview with CNBC (as transcribed by CVG), the man with the strangely square head has expanded on his denial, saying:
Over 26 million consumers have bought a Wii, so the consumer is saying that, for them, the quality of the visual is not nearly as important as the overall entertainment – the overall value of that experience and that’s really what’s propelled us.
In terms of what the future holds, we’ve gone on record to say that the next step for Nintendo in home console will not be to simply make it HD, but to add more and more capability.
We’ll do that when we totally tapped out all of the experiences for the existing Wii and we are nowhere near doing that yet, so lots of ongoing opportunity for the consumer in the current generation.
So, a Wii 2 is undoubtedly on its way, but it won’t be finalized or released until Wii sales drop off sharply. Which could take years. Meanwhile, SD it is.

“the man with the strangely square head”
LOL… love it dave… we’ve heard enough jolts and seen enough ridiculing pics on Aaron Greenberg to last a lifetime (thanks to Mike and every other article he does on 360)… do you DARE give the same treatment to (snob accent) SIR Howard Stringer???

I don’t have the faintest idea of what Nintendo will decide to do. Another Wii with some sort of motion-control? Definitely. How will it meet our standards?
I don’t care all to much. Nintendo tapered off once the Gamecube was released. The old days will stay golden, but their new efforts no longer inspire like they used to.

When is nintendo stop making peripheral and updating their hardware. How many different flavor of nintendo ds are there. First there’s Wii, then steering wheel, light saber, wii fit, tennis racquet, gun, shotgun, anything else I miss? Now.. wii HD, is all those peripherals compatible with Wii HD?

I hope the next Nintendo console which won’t have a Wii name on it for sure.
It needs this shit.
Blu-ray Disc drive
HDD support starting from 40GB
No Motion crap
Camera support
1080p support duh
Real gaming controller like PlayStation and Xbox.
A Brand New Online service
Blutooth support
Brand New menu like the PS3 will be perfect
USB Charger
45 GPU and CPU
That’s the basic that it needs and i will buy my first Nintendo console in my life ASAP if that is included for $400 or less.

10 years of ass whoppin’ from Sony forced Nintendo to really think out of the box!
Good for Nintendonitis!
Welcome to the HD club Ninty!
I guess Sony needed it also he he he
Microsoft is doing alright so far with no computus interuptus.

Wake up.
Wii doesn’t “need” to become a PS3 clone.
Are you just blind to the (continuing) vast hardware & software sales they enjoy or what?
January 16th, 2010
Or an Xbox 360 clone for that matter.

in reference to their strategy with the DS, DS Lite, DSi, & DS XL with last minute announcements and stuff …i believe the same style will be applied to the Wii.. its the only predictable cheap-ass answer but now that they have money HD is very likely to be added

Nintendo is a poor corporation compare to Microsoft and Sony but they need soon to make a new product to keep the battle going longer. The Xbox 360 and PS3 more advanced way more advanced soon people will realize all they be missing. They soon this spring also getting Netflix but just SD which is crap. On my Xbox 360 and PS3 i can use it in HD baby but i don’t LoL.
I can’t wait to see what Nintendo’s does when their panic day arrives most likely a rush new console and i bet it will still be less power then PS3 well duh and maybe less powerful then Xbox 360 but still more high tech.
I wish it was only Xbox and PlayStation.
OFF TOPIC:
Microsoft had the chance on the Xbox 1 to make it backwards compatible with Dreamcast but didn’t wow that’s so lame i still have a Dreamcast and Xbox 1 but this would had been awesome to have. Dreamcast, PS2, Xbox and Gamecube are better then the fucking Wii at everything.

one sales figure I would love to see with the Wii is how many people bought it then only played it for the first couple months and haven’t touched it again lol..

Do you know why the Wii (hardware and software) is selling in the numbers it does?
It sure as sh!te isn’t because people buy it and play it only a few times and then put it away and forget about it.
I know quite a few people now who have bought one, and it’s always been on the back of ‘word of mouth’ and/or having a right laugh playing it at a friends place with a few drinks etc.
Usually both.
Adult women love them and the guys love a game everyone can play without digesting something close to a novel of instructions and/or months of experience.
The (usually more than just a max of 2) multi-player aspect to it all is pretty key.
Total pick up and play.
If this claim that Wii only gets a few plays before it’s dropped really were true then that would be the ‘word of mouth’ going round about it – and it would have been the kiss of death to its sales long before now.
It seems to me that those who would self-appoint themselves as ‘serious’ or ‘hardcore’ gamers are the only ones who don’t like it and ditch it after a short time.
Wii is showing it is not aimed at them and it is opening up an entirely new ‘market’ who do not look down their noses at it but instead get a lot of fun and enjoyment out of it – and as things like Wii Fit show they have a canny knack of successfully linking into the kinds of things not usually associated with gaming.

I’d also add that HD could hardly be less relevant to that sort of thing.
I expect it will come but a post-evening out house party with half a dozen or so friends having a laugh on the Wii is not exactly ‘needing’ HD.

And the Wii is still a worthless system with no decent games…
January 17th, 2010
I thought the dsi xl was a rumour!
What the fuck is Nintendo doing? Screwing the parents out of their money for minimal upgrades?
And I thought MS was bad for selling shit hardware.
January 17th, 2010
twilight:
So true.
ncaissie:
Microsoft is beyond bad for hardware they are pure trash. The Xbox 360 was a rush nightmare so far i haven’t had any problem with my last Xbox 360 console, sometime it freezes a bit but that’s a common thing on Xbox 360.

PS2 is the real winner
Game Informer is owned a retarded dumb video game company aka GameStop. This list is making LoL some games are good.
January 17th, 2010
CarlB,
I saw the issue of GI that you are referring to. I personally don’t agree with much of their list. “A Boy and His Blob” and “Punchout.” This just sounds to me like they went through the Wii shovel ware and came up with titles to fill out the list for Wii games.
January 17th, 2010
twilight:
Yeah the Wii list is really pathetic. Why they included Flower there’s so many PS3 exclusive that need to take its place. And Halo Wars why include that it sucks pure boring RTS. and Shadow of Complex wow.
The list is not very well done those fucking noobs.

Nintendo will always do this “cheap-ass upfront play-safe towards industry monopoly master plan strategy” to reclaim their former empire.
Back in the 80′s there in only one battle cry amongst the Americans specially Microsoft and Sega.
“Defeat Nintendo Monopoly!”
After 10 years of defeat to Sony looks like the empire indeed has stroke back!
And its buliding a new death star, wow!
January 17th, 2010
Bash away guys, it’s obvious you either just don’t get it or you are simply blind to the truth of this.
If Wii was the worthless & instantly forgettable device some of you really would love it to be it just wouldn’t be the smash hit it has been – and continues to be.
January 17th, 2010
Microsoft only survive because the USA allow the company to monopolize everything like now. Even if they are just losing money every second.
January 17th, 2010
YEAH! There’s NO monopolies in Japan
Sony is losing money every time they sell a PS3 and they can’t sell as many games as Microsoft or Nintendo, even with great exclusives and “teh superiorz graphex”.

Ivan_PSP:
“Even if they are just losing money every second”
Ivan where do you pull this cr@p out of?
Microsoft is one of the most profitable organisations on the planet.
Even in this economic climate their last numbers (Oct 09) showed they are making over $3.5 billion (per quarter!).
January 19th, 2010
Game Informer
Best Publisher of 2009 = Sony
Best Developer of 2009 = Naughty Dog
Best Game of 2009 = Uncharted 2
Best Lineup of 2009 = PS3
January 19th, 2010
Must really stick in your throat that the buying public couldn’ give a f*ck about your dumb little lists.
Nevermind Ivan’s moronic lie, eh?
Try & change the subject with some more of your laughably irrelevant nonsense.
January 20th, 2010
It’s a legitimate list, and the buying public did care enough to buy more PS3′s last year, if not more software.
