PS3 Trophies hack – What is the point?
Xbox 360 Achievements and PS3 Trophies have certainly added another element to gaming this generation. No longer is it just about finishing a game, as doing so without fully exploring or pushing your skills to the limits leave you with little to show for it. However, some are now bypassing all this effort in obtaining kudos by releasing PS3 Trophies hacks. My question is: what is the point?
For me, gaming is about fun, entertainment and a bit of a challenge. I’m actually a pussy so tend to play games on lower skill levels, but I still enjoy obtaining Trophies and Achievements when I can. But it’s the getting that’s fun, not the having. Which makes videos like this one, showing a PS3 Trophies hack for Fuel, go straight over my head.
I understand what’s happening, but I don’t understand why. Strangers aren’t going to give a crap that you’ve got a Platinum Trophy, and your friends will either know you’ve cheated or question you how you managed it. And at that point you’ll have to lie through your teeth or admit the truth. Which makes the whole sorry exercise utterly pointless.
Unless you’re so materialistic that even having ill-gotten PS3 Trophies in your life improves it in some way.

How the trophy system works depends on the game developer. It is not a uniform process, as I have noticed that games differ in how the trophies are awarded. Some games will not allow a loaded save state to award trophies, some will. How autosave is utilized has a huge effect as well, as some games will not award the trophy until it is written to the save file, and don’t allow multiple controlled saves. Doing a specific event in multiple ways (Like fallout3 or Infamous) by reloading a save file and still getting to keep the trophy from the playthrough that wasn’t saved, is another famous lowtech cheat. These are available because of the way the games are coded to award the trophies. These are glitches, and they are the fault of the game maker, not the trophy system itself, unless you want Sony to force every game made to a single save file per account, autosave only, and trophies only awarded on the save.
While the PS3 has been hacked, it is a very unstable hack, that requires blank BDs. The prohibitive cost of the media has made it very unattractive to the general public, and the PS3 firnware has been mapped to make hacking not only difficult, but to also have a negative effect on the playability of the system. Whether sony developed the platform in these ways with piracy in mind, is not known, but it is the reason why the HackBox PleaseFixMe and it’s achievement system IS severely comprimised and lacking integrity in comparison to the PS3.

Got it right on, Dave. I HATE cheats, glitches, and everything like it. I only use cheats in a game if it expands it’s replay value, and makes it more fun. Example: Mercenaries 1. After nearly 100%ing the game (still had a few treasures to find and all), I had lots of fun putting on invincibility, infinite ammo, and the insanely powerful cheat-rocket launcher. Then proceeding to blow the entire map to the ground, one building at a time.
Needless to say, cheating online isn’t much fun for anybody.

This is not a hack, this is an exploit, there is a difference. It is still cheating, but to call it a hack is false. This exploits the trophy check that the title uses (from save file, not from save point or from actual in game action) can be used from any other game that uses the same trophy check, and doesn’t have an encrypted account tag.
If a save file is created using a program that adds your account tag to the save file, and the game uses this sort of check, then it would be a game save hack, and still nothing to do with hacking the PS3 itself.
Don’t talk about standards on the PS3, Carlb, because in comparison to the vault that is the PS3 when it comes to integrity, the 360 is a butterfly net. There is no other competition to compare it to, so overall, the PS3 is leading the industry in online achievement system integrity, as well as anti-piracy measures. Sure they could do better, but being the best is still better than everyone else.

One of the problems is that a lot of those games are on differing servers that can’t be monitored as well for hackers or cheats, and the devs/publishers do not have the right to ban them from PSN. Microsoft has a team in place just for this problem, and to continue to prevent people from using cheats and exploits.

And don’t you read how much hate there is regarding a trophy exploit?
I had a 360 in 2007-2008, key word “had”. Which console I own has nothing to do with the point I was trying to make.

Hate? No. Amusement? Hell yes. Funny, I never claimed the 360 is any better, and I don’t believe it is. I did think it was humorous considering how long the anti-360 slant went on here about how it could be hacked and the PS3′s trophy system was infallible in comparison. I forgot we can’t criticize Sony here, only Microsoft… LoL.
You’ll see I’ve also shot down CAD and Kev in their anti-PS3 comments as well, or maybe you just refused to.

Actually, I do like Sony, it’s why I have a PS3, PSP, PS2, and Sony Stereo… but I did see something Microsoft was doing to prevent the problem from happening, or at least deter it, and thought it might be worth mentioning that Sony could do it as well. Kind of like Sony has interchangeable hard drives, I would love that capability in my 360 as well.

Ok so you own a PS3. That’s all I wanted to know.
I don’t believe Carl hates Sony, otherwise he wouldn’t have spent hundreds of dollars on the console and games, spent numerous hours getting platinum trophies on the God Of War games etc. He has his favourite machine, as do we all, and he has pulled people up from both sides of the fence whenever they start drinking the Kool Aid. I think his casting an objective eye over some comments puts a lot of stuff into perspective.

I agree with ya Dave whats the point?? I busted ass for my small amount of trophies. And just about broke my PS3 over some (ex.pureblade stone aka.Demon’s Souls). But I would not have it any other way lol. Now on some games like Chronicles of Riddick where even after you get all the SP player trophies for both games, you have to also get all the MP ones before it lets you have the Platium, I think that is BS and I don’t understand it. Especially when the MP was slapped together and sloppy as hell. Theres one trophy on there for like a million kills but there is hardly anybody ever online playing it so to get that without cheating is not going to happen. There are more than a few trophies like that on it. Trophies are supposed to be in the range of easy to very hard to get not impossible. And since I don’t cheat the games replay value just went downhill.

I must admit my gaming skills are unlegendary. I play most games on easy or normal most of the time except for shooting games. I can play shooters on a higher skil level. However, I am not into cheating. If I don’t actually earn the trophies or achievements, then I don’t want them. All of my trophies and achievements have been earned by me.

oldschool – pull your head out. the only point i was making is that this hack makes earning trophies a moot point on PSN. You can never fully trust the gamer earned them or hacked them, meaning you can never really be sure how good a gamer he/she is with the particular game.
what i like about xbl you can judge how long someone has played a game, by their achievements. The longer they’ve played a game the better chances for knowing the rules, tactics, experience, board familiarity, etc, etc. Experienced gamers are usually more fun to play with.

actually there are trophy hacks for many other PS3 games. they’re available for download. a simple search will show you where they are. i won’t post a link from here, because i don’t want to violate TOS.
