Gamer stabs mother after preventing him from playing online

Gamer stabs mother after preventing him from playing online Just when things have started calming down with regards to video game related violence, another incident pops up. A young teenager apparently stabbed his mother, who was trying to stop him from gaming too much.

According to Kotaku, a 15-year-old boy from Romania stabbed his adoptive mother, after she tried to stop his Counter-Strike addiction. Apparently, she threatened to stop paying the Internet connection bills resulting in an automatic disconnection.

The story gets worse as the teen went out to an Internet cafe to continue playing Counter-Strike afterwards. He turned himself into the authorities shortly after playing some CS. Apparently, the signs of addiction were there with the boy skipping out on 200 days from school. Also, the unfortunate event happened on his parent’s 16th wedding anniversary.

I can’t help but feel that kids are just getting desensitized to violence these days. I was in EBGames the other day and a young boy around 10-years-old with his mom came into the store. The mother asked the clerk if he had Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 for her son.

The clerk took one look at the the 10-year-old kid and started explaining that the game was really violent. The boy started protesting that he has COD4: MW and has beaten it. I wonder if the mother even realizes that in one part of the game you control a terrorist (undercover) that goes into an airport and shoots up unarmed innocent people.  It makes you wonder as to why we have high school shootings.

What an idiot. That bitch need to keep paying nah. Lets hope he stays in jail for a while wow for such a crappy game not even a PlayStation.

  2. CAD:

Well I fully Agree. So many think Video Games are not to blame but it’s just one of the mediums that influence kids to do dumb things and act them out in real life. Funny enough Chavez said this yesterday.

“Games are “poison” says Venezuelan president

Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez has laid into the PlayStation, accusing it of leading children down the capitalist “road to hell” as well as encouraging violence.

Speaking in his weekly radio-TV show Alo Presidente, Chavez refered to the console as poison, reports AFP.

“These games they call PlayStation are poison. Some games teach you to kill. They once put my face on a game. ‘You’ve got to find Chavez to kill him’,” said Chavez.

Games “promote the need for cigarettes, drugs and alcohol so they can sell them. That’s capitalism – the road to hell,” he added.

Instead of promoting these games, Venezuela should be making educational titles, he said.

In October, the country introduced a law that made the selling of violent videogames punishable with up to five years in prison.

It’s not the first time Chavez has made clear his dislike of games and western toys in general. It’s reported he once slammed Nintendo for promoting “selfishness, individualism and violence.”"

I really hate seeing articles like this. It’s true that video games influence can be influential but face it so is TV, Movies, Books and Music. Shit we all know little boys in the hood grow up listening to rap and wanna think they are all gangsta.

When it comes down to it it sounds like this kid (and many others) had a serious problem. I think that problem stems from parenting problems. All the signs are there. His adoptive parents most likely were not taking care of him properly.

  5. Ivan_PSP:

People blame video games for everything why not movies they are worse fuck this law shit lets make our own. And yes this kid is a retard but what’s done is done move on. I love violent games and i haven’t stab or beheaded anyone yet LoL maybe soon i will blame games and start killing all this fucking Xbotic losers..

  6. Saber_HAHAha:

This is pretty sad and the kid should be in jail for a long time. However, I don’t think that this problem stems from the video game itself: The kid obviously has some problems.

Violent video games don’t make violent people. However, it could set it up if the kid has some mental problems, or was raised by bad parenting.

I do agree that games like COD could do something to a 10 year old, just like music and TV. You see worse in 14A and even some PG13 movies than in most M-rated video games, however.

  7. Roca.:

    stupid kid…

  8. CAD:

Yes TV, Movies, Books and Music all influence in some negative way but Video Games allow you to act out your situation. I the grand scheme of things it comes down to parenting but let be honest parenting is a thing of the past in todays society. In a 24 Hour time clock you may see your children for about 5 of those Hours depending on age. School and friends are where they spend the most of their time so their influence is not coming from the parent. Everything is work work work that parents are so tired that they don’t even have time to look after their kids. Spanking is not allowed anymore and is frowned upon therefore discipline has gone right out the door. I believe that spear the rod and spoil the child is exactly why children lack respect today. What’s funny is we all grew up on spanking are are better people because of it but somehow we have concocted in our heads that this is a bad thing. Sadly it is the devils plot to destroy the home and the institution of family that God setup. Instead of fixing the problem we make excuses for them.

  9. SW:

    Damn those video games!

On top of that they’re extra sneaky!! So sneaky in fact, that when an independent researcher tries to link video games to violence, the video game doesn’t influence anyone and they can’t find a link!

  10. Happyhockum:

Spoilt idiot moron acts like the selfish creepy moron he is, more like.

    Ditto that vile 10yr old.

Unfortiunately some parents park their kids in front of a TV (with or without game console) and more or less leave far too big a chunk of their upbringing to it.
Some parents just have little option they’re working so much to provide for said spoilt brats.

    Conscript the little f*ckers.

Step out of line seriously and they either get sentenced to boot camp (like the 10yr old, disturbing the public peace) for 1yr minimum and/or then into the army (‘all-the-sh!te-jobs’ penal section once the 15yr old has done his 1 or 2yrs in the boot camp).
5yrs minimum once they hit 16.

That’d sort the little b@stards out.

  11. oldschool1987:

They wouldn’t last 5 minutes in the Army lol.

  12. Akaro:

A sad event. As always, I don´t believe this is games´ fault. A developer is just looking to make an interesting experience, its not their responsability to educate youth. That´s the duty of a parent.

I remember when I was very young, my father took some time to sit and watch/play whatever I was doing at the time mostly, on weekends. He usually commented what he liked or not and asked me to do the same. I could ask him questions about different matters games and cartoons treated.

It was just a couple of hours a week. But I looked forward to that each time. Somehow I enjoyed more gaming when he was watching or playing with me.

I think that was both a bonding and learning experience. It gave me some perspective about many things: how to control your anger when loosing, dying in a game and dying in real life, violence and stuff like that.

In this case it was gaming. If I were playing soccer or baseball I think he would have done the same. As long as a parents get involved with their children and what they do, both can learn a lot about each other.

And I agree with CAD: MODERATE physical punishment is integral for educating a child. They don´t need only love but discipline too.

  13. Akaro:

This kinda reminds me the mentality:

    h**p://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YersIyzsOpc&feature=fvst

(I´m not sure if the video is fake or not)

  14. Roca.:

that kid was probably the Future of Sega, that dude have some serious issues

  15. CON:

I have no respect for any parent who lets their children to play video games hours on end like that. It’s unhealthy.

Once they have their schoolwork done they can play for a while but it’s important that they are going outside to socialise with friends, playing for football clubs etc… but the buck stops with the parents.

  16. ncaissie:

    Games don’t make bad kids.
    Parents do.

  17. CON:

    True.

    That and marilyn manson……apparently.

  18. ncaissie:

I agree Akaro, I watch and check on what my kids do.
I have an 8 year old that makes lots of anime on youtube. I always check her history and while she uses youtube to be sure she doesn’t watch stuff that’s not appropriate.

It amazes me to see how kids act today and how their parents don’t say/do anything about it.
I see it all the time at the kids gymnastics and doctors offices.

  19. Akaro:

    ncaissie:
So good you are are doing that. One day my 14 year old sister comes and ask me about “Bible Black”.

    - “Wait, how did you know about it?” I started asking her surprised.
    - “Girl A from my classroom talked about Anime in general as a presentation about ‘Hobbies’” she said. “I know several of the anime she mentioned at the end but I didn´t know that one”.
    - “Mentioned?”
    - “Yeah, as recommendations”
    - ¡O_o!

Why would a girl watch and then recommend Bible Black? To all her classmates? And in front of a teacher?

I would like to think that this “girl A” only took the name or the info from other source, but… who knows.

“Gamer stabs mother after preventing him from playing online”

    “Gamer stabs mother”

    “stabs mother”

    “MOTHER”

People will put the blame on the gaming industry, but really, what can they do about it? Sure, the game caused him to have the addiction that lead to the incident. But no video game could provoke a child to stab his own MOTHER.

It isn’t the “violence” part of the video game either. If he was extremely addicted to some cute and cuddly online cuddler (off the top of my head), the result would’ve been the same. The fact that Counter Strike is addicting isn’t because of the violence.

It probably wasn’t a parenting issue, either. The simple fact that she was preventing him from gaming too much was enough evidence. When you start skipping school for an online game, it’s time for it to stop.

Where does the blame go to? The kid, that’s where. There are going to be people trying to put the blame on everyone BUT the one who committed the crime. I hope he gets locked up for a long time, and comes out with some common sense.

  21. gunstar:

“Anything including video games can be prone to Substance Abuse” should be very old news for parent’s and children alike.

I think this kid thought he had nothing worthwhile to do except video gaming. He developed that habit over a long period of time to the point of it becoming an addiction and priority in life.

Parents & children needs to protect their lives from abusing something good like video games.
    Have a balanced life together.

I was a Sega Genesis junkie before an would cancel dates for playing Street Fighter 2 or Phantasy Star.

I got my education from video games of Wolverine, Dragon Ball Z and Street Fighter but I never hurt anybody.

Now I am a manga illustrator taking inspiration from video games.

Joe Maduriera was a comic book artist before he became a Playstation junkie but in a twist of fate he turned what should be a negative into a positive- hence Vigil Games.

There is no denying video games in popular culture just like comics, music and movies.
They should make life fun not sad.
Just handle it right with resposibility.

“It makes you wonder as to why we have high school shootings.”

    1. there was school violence waaaaay before videogames.
    2. guns are much more accessible nowadays.(US)
    3. movies, tv, books AND games have always had guns as their primary props

CAD – ” I believe that spear the rod and spoil the child is exactly why children lack respect today”

right…because nothing says “don’t be violent” like exacting violence on someone….

the “rod” comment was taken from the bible in a time when women were on par with sheep, the world was flat, and infections were called “demon” possession.

it’s funny how people like to quote the bible yet ignore the silliness of it….

to say someone is better because they got spanked as a kid is pure b.s. There are many fact-filled studies showing children of violence (even spanking) tend to have higher tendancies to be violent adults.

    back ontopic:

the reality is; each case of unnecessary violence is a case in itself. The broad strokes used to try to understand and pigeonhole violent offenders will never work. Some people simply have bad wiring. Always have, always will. No amount of hugs, tough love, spankings, or therapy will change that.

Want to place blame? blame the offender, not the game, movie, tv show, or any other stupid idea….

“When you start skipping school for an online game, it’s time for it to stop.”
Your right but after 200 missed days it was long past “Start skipping”

  27. phranctoast:

200 days of missed school when there’s only 180 days in the average school year is a bit much.

Some blame has to come to the parents in that respect.

There has been a lot of confusion as to what 360 is and is not capable of regarding 3D. We take a look at the technical details to uncover the truth.

the ps3 also had “much more power” for bluray and look where that got them…lmao..

don’t. I think that Microsoft has a contract to make sure that they get that sequel, But I think Epic regrets signing that contract. You’re up to 11 million PS3 in the US and probably similar number in Europe, you got a 20 million addressable market with a game like Gears of War, I mean, that thing would easily sell 3 or 4 million on the PS3; that’s a lot of profit.”

  46. kev:

ncaissie – “They beat out HD DVD so what’s your point? I enjoy my BR’s”

actually, if you know the history you know they didn’t “beat out” HD-DVD. sony approached tosh and offered to the sell them the Cell manufacturing and other nuts and bolts if tosh would remove themselves from the market. they did.

the point i was making is, because of the inclusion of bluray in the ps3:
    1. it launched at one of the higest pricepoints in history when their last generation was primarily built on prices 1/3 of the price of the ps3. ($199 ps2).
    2. sony went directly from first place to last place in sales. the early launch of the 360 was predicted by many “analysts”, kuturagi and the ps2 fanboys to be a non-factor in the face of “100 million ps2 customer” they liked to tout. ouch.
    3. due to the high price/little interest, sony lost about 4 billion in 1 year. the hardware losses continue after 2 years on the market, but sony refuses to provide hard numbers. suprise.

phranc – best response in the long time.
